Does OS X supports a feature (I think it's called S3) that allows the computer to write everything into the the HDD before sleeping and can wake up from a complete power down? I switch between Windows and Mac very often, for games mostly. But I don't want to shut down Mac every time I want to play a game. I don't want VM or any kind.
View 3 RepliesSo I was trying to install windows on my Imac using bootcamp, and everything seemed to be working fine. I put in my Windows CD and pressed continue, it then loaded me up to the windows installation page and it told me that I could not use the Bootcamp partition to put my windows OP on, because the partition needed to be NSF or something like that, so I highlighted the Bootcamp partition from the menu, and then clicked the partition button, after I had done that, it was then able to install windows on that partition. After the installation was complete, my Imac now only boots up the windows operating system without any option to what operating system to be booted. What do I do?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy MBP (about 2 years old, Santa Rosa) is having some major issues both starting up and going into sleep. First off, I'm using 10.5.8, everything's updated, I don't have a bunch of stuff on the startup processes (quicksilver and iTunes helper) and I'm plugged into a power source. When I start my computer (since yesterday) it has been taking an abnormally long time at the grey screen before the Apple, the grey screen with the apple and the rotating wheel, and then it goes to a light blue screen for 5 or so minutes (repeat: minutes) until flashing light and dark blue and finally taking me to the login. Not only that, but my computer will not go to sleep when I close the lid. Instead, the screen turns off and the hard drive and fans keep chugging. What's more annoying is when I then try to open the lid to manually turn it to sleep, the screen won't turn on. This usually requires a hard reset, which then takes 10 minutes to start up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an older but babied 2008ish Macbook Pro. Today upgraded my 3GS to os 4 with no problem. I downloaded a couple things but didn't go crazy today. I left work and shut lid. When I got home it was stuck on the screen saver password for a long time. I turned off the unit and now it just boots to a white screen. I can boot via OSX disc but it also doesn't see HD. This is a 500gb Seagate drive and I'm screwed if it's dead. Any suggestions to at least get to my bootcamp partition?

When booting from an external firewire drive, on which I have OS X 10.9.3 installed, my Mac completes the boot sequence without going to sleep. I have run the OS X installer over my current installation, (without wiping), and the computer still goes to sleep once the boot sequence has completed.
I'm on Mac Pro os x 10.5.4 and having a problem with my computer waking up from sleep or as it is booting up.
As it wakes up from sleep, the screen becomes blank or shows weird, pixelated bars all over the screen. When I try to move the mouse or press something on keypad, the computer freezes after and I would have to force shutting it down by pressing the power. It doesn't always happen, but quite often these days.
Also, when it's booting up, it sometimes will freeze with a blank screen in the middle and won't show the desktop.
Everything worked fine until a few days ago, and i'm wondering what's suddenly causing this problem.
I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just had to switch to a new (late '08 unibody) MacBook Pro. I was able to transfer my Mac files from my 2007 MBP, but the Boot Camp partition didn't get copied by default. I tried moving it with WinClone but when I boot to Windows the machine enables the backlight, spins up the CD, but never does anything else.
I tried to completely remove and recreate the Boot Camp partition but 3 different WinXP CDs (SP2 and SP3) do exactly the same thing. My original WinXP CD is from SP1 so I've tried grabbing a few slipstreamed disc images off the net. They all behave the same.
This only happens when I choose to boot into windows. The screen sort of hangs for about 20 seconds in a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner before even starting to boot into windows. I know its normal for this to happen for like 5 seconds tops, but this is happening for about 20 seconds and its dreadful trying to boot into Windows 7 because it takes so long. When windows is done starting up i don't even get any messages saying startup failed or something like that. This is so annoying that I even reinstalled everything but the same thing happened.

I have the Windows XP Black Edition image file, when I hit "Continue without Disk" on Fusion, next options are "Use installation disk image file", "Use existing virtual disk" or "Create custom virtual machine".
If I just have the .iso, what option should I go with?
I have Windows Xp and Windows 7 on two different hard drives in my Mac Pro. Windows 7 had been working fine, but I needed XP to run some older programs that 7 couldn't do. I have been working in XP some time now but when I try to boot from the Windows 7 drive it just reverts to the XP one. Even when I click on the Windows 7 drive to make it the start up drive it still goes to XP. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive which I have successfully installed Windows XP SP3 onto. It was a long and painful process but I finally was able to get a modified XP install disc ready and from a Dell PC running Windows was able to install onto the external hard drive and I'm able to boot from it and everything. I did this on a PC because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to boot correctly from an external drive in Mac.
Anyway, the hardest part is in the past and now my only problem is how to boot this external hard drive from my macbook, which is primarily what I want to use it on. I currently have a Macbook with three operating systems on it: Mac OS 10.5.8, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows XP SP3. I use rEFIt to boot into these operating systems. I tried using rEFIt to boot into XP on the external hard drive but it just gives me the legacy error messages saying that it couldn't load and noting the booting legacy os is not well supported by mac.
I have a Macbook Pro 17" (Model A1229). Since some days I am unable to boot into OS X. Regardless if I boot from internal hard drive, external USB drive, Mac OSX Install DVD or an Install Image of OS X on a USB Stick. Every time I boot OS X I get a kernel panic after some seconds. Sometimes the grey spinner (below the apple during boot) just stops spinning (no kernel panic then).
In the beginning I was sometimes able to boot into OS X but it only lasts a few minutes or seconds and then freezes or I was getting a kernel panic. Now I always get the freeze or kernel panic during boot up. As it also happens when booting from external sources it can not be the internal hard drive (also already changed that drive). So I thought it must be the logic board or something but I can run windows 7 on the machine without any problem! I already tried SMC and PRAM reset...

I have a 20" Intel Imac that will not boot, not even from a CD.Interestingly I never get the chime on boot up, I hear the hard drive and the combo drive spinning, and just wind up with the spinning wheel of death. I've tried unplugging for 30 minutes, all the different various ways to boot (safe, CD, clearing PRAM). Could it be the PRAM battery causing this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got a Mac G4 tower from a doctor I work with. He needed me to delete the whole hard drive before I took it. I booted off the OSX tiger DVD and wiped the drive with no problems, (I even booted it off the DVD the next day, to show my friend that the drive was wiped), but now that I have it home I am unable to boot from the OSX DVD. It shows the apple screen with the apple logo and the spinning... whatever you call it..... but then the screen just goes black after a minute or two. Have ejected the DVD, and retried, Zapped the PRAM by using control opt P+R and by unplugging the G4 and pushing the PMU button next to the battery.

Now, all of a sudden the display won't sleep. The display remains on, and does not dim either. Restarting the computer causes this feature to function again...then it starts to not sleep after a a few hours (or so).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 2005 G5 PowerMac. It has been locking up lately. Tonight it will not boot. Everytime I turn it on I get to the apple screen and the circle keeps going round and round. I then followed the directions to reset the PMU and I disconnected the second hard drive. Now it will still not boot and gets to the apple screen, circles a couple of times then locks up. I have disconnected everything except the monitor, keyboard and mouse and still have the same problem. The largest issue is the CD drive will not open so I cannot attempt to reload the OS or anything else that requires the CD drive. I do not know if there is a manual way to open the drive. I have searched the help forums and only see the keyboard as an option. I have read many posts that the 9800 video card is a problem - we have an ATI 800 XT and I have not read anything hear about that card being an issue.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAs of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.
When I'm working, sometimes it goes to sleep without any warning, also with a full battery. It never happens when the magsafe is connected. I noticed that when I wake the macbook again, in the battery icon (top-right), there is a "X" instead of it's capacity%.. Therefore I blame my battery for the random sleep. (the "X" dissapears almost immediately after waking up)

Is it OK to leave the MB on sleep. On my previous Laptop I never shut it down unless it was necessary, im talking the computer never shutdown for like 2 or 3 weeks of use. Not continuous use, I use the laptop 3,4 maybe 5 times a day and its kinda hard for me to wait for the boot up, i usually just close it (sleep) and go away. Can I damage my MB doing that?

It is not a hardware problem as my Windows Vista on the Machine sleeps just how I would like it. For info, the Hard Drive that is in it (320GB WD Scorpio Black) was used in an EFI Hackintosh install for my MSI Wind (but EFI installs do not modify the main operating system so I do not know what the heck is causing this)? By the way, the MacBook is custom, made by me. I built it out of three dead MacBooks.

I am yet to finish it. I am still prototyping the new top screen assembly using the Black lid, a red apple, and the screen with a scratch on it, and the bezel from the 2.2GHZ which is really beat up. The current top assembly is straight from the 2.0GHZ White. Here's a pic of it in it's current state.
This is a bit of an old one I know. When I turn my Mac on it goes through the boot up process and as it about to come to the desktop image it selects the HD Mac as if I had pressed it with the mouse and then starts the cancel sound bonging away until I press the escape button on the keyboard.This normally keeps it at bay. Although on occasion it suddenly selects it again and starts playing the cancel sound again. When I unplug the keyboard it doesn't make that sound at all. I hate the wireless keyboard but wonder if I buy another wired one will it start making the same noise again?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Power Mac froze, and won't boot. I'm running 10.4. No recent changes, downloads, or updates. Safe mode won't work. freezes on grey start up screen. System CD in drive, won't boot from holding down "c" held down option and selected CD and finally got to disk utility.
Now, when I try to run utility to repair permissions, I get an error stating "disk utility has lost its connection with the disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility" happens over and over.
When I try to repair disk, I get a red line saying "reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect date, keys out of order. The volume could not be repaired". Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972). 1 volume could not be repaired.

when i have my macbook on and close it (sleep mode) and re-open it at a later time. it typically makes four noises (basically sounds like it is reading the hard drive for 1-2 seconds when you open it. lately it is making those same noises but noticeably slower. what could be causing this? is my hard drive going to go out on me soon? i have about 10 GB free on it.

How to prevent it ? the system recovery does not seem to have any terminal app so cannot issue caffeinate command either :/

I started up my iBook today and it took me all the way through sign-in to my desktop before giving me a grey overlay with a little box saying that I need to restart. So I did and then it took me to my desktop again before scrolling code across the screen in a very messy, un-mac-like way. I tried getting into safe boot (restarting and pressing shift from after the tone until the apple and wheel show up) and it just ran the apple and wheel grey start-up screen for a while before kicking back into a normal restart and giving me the earlier results. So I went and got myself into single-user mode and ran the fsck -yf command. It told me this: Checking Catalog file Invalid extent entry (4, 190) Volume check failed Is there any way to fix this, to save my computer? I don't know anything about code or computers. My general mode of operation has been "I bought a /mac/. I shouldn't ever have to look at code."

View 6 Replies View Relatedif anyone else is having problems with their unibody Macbook pro screen getting washed out after a while - especially if the computer has been put into and woken from sleep. I run a 24 inch dell monitor along side my MBP in dual monitor mode, the MBP the slave monitor, with the Dell the main monitor. After a while of use, approx 2 hours, the macbook pro screen fades out/appears washed out. It seems to settle after either a restart or dimming the MBP screen to black for a few minutes. My MBP is not on a cooling stand but I'm going to get one Is this a heat thing, a firmware thing or a defective hardware? I'm running 10.5.6 and have updated the firmware/efi as per apple updates.
