Is there a way I can access a laptop drive's contents from the harddrive via USB to USB (similar to Macs' Firewire-firewire) to recover the harddrive? An Asus laptop i'm using doesn't get into Vista and I tried Safe mode but it doesn't work..

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am installing XP on my mac laptop and am not sure how much space to partition. The laptop's total space is about 235GB with currently 50GB free.
I will only be using Windows for a few specific programs: Autodesk: Toxik, Mudbox, Motionbuilder and Cleaner XL. I probably won't be using the programs too extensively either, I mainly use Maya and I have the OSX version of that.
Based on that info I was hoping to get a rough estimate on how much space I should partition for XP, I don't want to go too low and not be able to install and use everything but at the same time I don't want to put too much space on the XP partition either and end up with wasted space.
I had windows in a bootcamp partition for a while, and today, i decided to erase the partition and make a new, bigger one. I erased it just fine, but I can't make another one, it just gives me this error: Verification failed: this disk could not be partitioned. Use disk utility to repair this disk. I went to disk utility and i clicked verify disk (repair disk was not highlighted) and it gave me another error: filesystem verify or repair failed. I also repaired disk permissions with no such luck.

When I wanted to dual-boot a PC and Linux, I had to partition the hard-drive and install the OSes before doing anything else. Do I need to do that for bootcamp and Windows 7? I only really need windows on bootcamp for a game that's coming out in 2011. Do I need to install it now or can I wait?

For example, I use time machine to back up my Mac files so at any time I'll be ready to start anew, I can I do this for my windows partition? BTW, the partition is 500GB on a 2 TB drive.
I'm hoping there's a way to give the partition it's own hard drive when I get a computer that can handle multiple hard drives.
I previously had a Windows partition that I created with Boot Camp. I was running out of room and wanting to try out Windows 7, so I deleted it and tried to create a larger one. So far, i have not been able to create a new partition. The error I'm currently getting reads "Verification failed. This disk could not be partitioned. Use Disk Utility to repair this disk." When I do that, I usually get that it needs repairing, I repair it, and then it happens again. I've done the repairing using the Leopard DVD or booting from another hard drive that's bootable. Another error I was getting said there is currently data there that cannot be moved. That errors told me to back up, wipe my hard drive, and do a reinstall. I really don't want to have to do that, and I really don't NEED Windows, but I did recently want to play some games and dug up my old games for Windows.

What would be the best way to accomplish this (I'd rather not increase the partition w/ a third party app)? I was thinking the best is to eliminate unnecessary files that I am pretty certain were installed as part of the Vista install so that I can recover as much HDD space on the windows partition as possible, but don't know what I can eliminate safely? View 5 Replies View RelatedThe picture above is evidence of my self-corrupting OS. Those 3 problems are the same every single time I boot my computer. I have done countless re-installs of OS X Lion, even bought a new hard drive and did a clean install. Because of the self-corruption, I cant resize or partition my drive for Windows, with Boot Camp giving me a generic "An error has occurred. Format your disk and re-install Mac OS X" (Partitioning failed so I never wiped).

so I got OS X Leopard. I had a copy of Windows Vista, and decided to try out the Boot Camp Assistant. Didn't have a problem partitioning the drives and installing Windows. However, I now find it entirely pointless to have Windows on my Mac being that I have a PC now. I tried doing it myself at first, and ended up erasing the Windows partition, and now I'm having troubles combining the drives into one. I saw something about running an uninstaller through the Boot Camp Assistant, but I think erasing the Windows partition ruined that for me. Whenever I try to use the BCA while the drive is mounted I get this error message: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows. When I unmount the Windows partition, I get THIS error message: Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used. This startup disk is not supported.

I learned how to enable Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard's NTFS read-write capability today and so I no longer need to keep my first two partitions as FAT32 (especially since I have files larger than 4 GB I would like to store on them). I have data on the first FAT32 partition that I would like to transfer to the second FAT32 partition once I have reformatted it as NTFS whereby I will then be able to reformat the first FAT32 partition to NTFS without losing my data.I have nothing important on the second FAT32 partition, but when I opened Disk Management in Administrative Tools in Windows 7, I found that the second FAT32 partition is currently set as the active partition of that volume. View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.
I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 on my hard drive using Bootcamp. I'd like to know if in the future I decide to remove windows, am I able to remove the partition and revert back to the full hard drive space or not?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently got rid of a partition I had made for bootcamp since I never use it, and would rather have the space back. I deleted the partition through disc utility, and then through the partition tab, tried to get back that space by dragging down the tab to restore the space originally set for the partition. When I go to apply this change, it notifies that my hard drive will be re-sized. I accept and then a few minutes later it comes back with the error "Partition failed with the error: Filesystem verify or repair failed" Does anybody know how I can restore this space successfully back into my main hard drive? Well for some reason he was trying to use Time Machine last night and ended up deleting everything. He's at work, screwed and stressed out so I'm trying to be the helpful and supportive wife. View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a client who has a MAC Mini running OS X. System is not booting into the OS, its freezing up during boot process. Data on the hard drive is critical to the user.
- The hardware utility on the OS X install cd says there's no problems, but when removed from the mini, connected to a PC, and tested using bootable cd IBM Drive Fitness Test and Seagate Seatools, the drive fails both tests.
- The drive has been connected to our data transfer system (running Windows XP) and unsurprisingly XP sees the drive in disk managment, but doesn't see the partition in Explorer.
- Research online led us to HFSExplorer, which dies see the MAC partition and file tree. But any attempt to extract files results in a Java runtime error saying that the source cannot be accessed. Once this error is received, HFSExplorer crashes and must be relaunched, and will not detect the MAC partition again until the computer is hard shutdown and restarted. THe physical drive vanishes from disk managment when the error occurs also.
- Further research led us to MacDrive, which mounts the drive (after reporting that it detected an error and asking if we still want to mount). We can again browse the file tree, but as soon as we attempt to copy anything, it fails and the explorer window with the MAC partiton vanishes. Again, the system must be hard restarted in order to restore access to the partition.
- Found a repair utility in the MACDrive program. Running that results in the error "80070002: The system cannont find the file specified."
- I'm out of ideas at this point.
I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up
So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

I had my hard drive partitioned into 2, where one was mac the other windows xp. I received this macbook as a gift from my sister so i wanted to reformat everything into mac. I popped in the Mac OS x install cd and just installed it. Now there is two hard drives and I am not able to re-partition it where i can bring it back to one again...I was suppose to delete windows first before re-formating my macbook.
View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend emailed last night saying he had a drive that had been 'acidentally formatted' (that's a lot of accidental mouse clicks if you ask me), that it took 2 seconds to format so it should have not actually wiped any data on there.
I've used Disk Warrior in other circumstances but never tried on an initialised drive. Nor would I know how to get a copy of such old software.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what software from that time might recover the data?
Long story short I dropped my 500GB Maxtor external HD (which is really just an internal HD in a chase). The drop was about 3 ft. It was not on so I don't think there will be much damage to the disk, but it no longer mounts. I was wondering if anyone could think of a way to get the disk to mount so I can recover files saved to it. I have Tech Tools, and Data Rescue II to recover the drive but as long it is not being recognized by the computer those applications are useless.

my MacBook harddrive stopped working last week. I took it to a Mac Certified guy, but he was unable to recover any of the applications or files on the drive. This is the second drive in two years. The first one I was able to find a guy who recovered everything and put it onto disks. I tried those on the new harddrive, and the iPhoto application and files are not opening. Is there any way to recover the stuff on the second hard drive?

It wouldn't be such a big deal except I had about a year of photos which I had not backed up. I purchased around $300 of various (and supposedly reputable) data and photo recovery software; however, none of them worked. I could recover thumbnails and that's it.
I currently have a Macbook with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running OSx 10.5.8. I also have Parallels with Windows XP. My question is: If I buy a suitable adapter to connect my Vaio's hard drive to my Mac, could I potentially try something else to recover the photos? Or would it just be a waste of time?
An external hard drive, 4TB Iomega...connected via eSATA cable...had a power outage and the drive won't be read by OSX now. (Yes, it was on a surge protector and no I did not have a backup. I was actually preparing for the process of creating a backup when the power went out!) Anyway, I have tried using Data Rescue 3 and DiskDrill to try and recover data from the drive. I can recover the first 1/3 of the drive, but it ejects when either app tries to access the bad block. how/what software to use to recover the data? I know there are programs that will avoid the bad block but I've only found them for Windows. Are there any that will do such a thing in Lion? I can not afford a data recovery service. Trying to do this on my own.

I had a necessity to install from an encrypted Hard drive using the Lion USB Boot Drive. When I attempted to restore from the drive, I was unable to do so.
After finally completing a complete install of Lion, I was able to use Migration assistant. But I still had to reinstall and reconfigure several things necessary to my business.
Is this a shortcoming of a reconstruction process or is there something I should have done?

Our old Toshiba External Hard drive has failed ( approximately 3 years old ). It powers on and the blue light comes on, but the fans don't spin and you can't see it in the finder or on my computer ( we tried on both PC and Mac ).
Any ideas as to how I can retrieve the data... without going to a specialist and pay ���, or would that be the only option
I have an imac and a few months ago I wiped the computer using a 7 pass wipe or whatever it's called - i totally wiped everything off the computer as i thought it had a virus. I also then reformatted my external hard drive. My mac and my harddrive now have new data on but can you beleive it, I have lost a very important document which was on my mac before it was wiped and was on my external hard drive and I really need it back.
