Software :: Unable To Read Written Cd / Behaves Like Fresh Unburnt Cd
Oct 26, 2010
I have two Mac's -- roughly 2007 Mac Book Pro's. One is rather beat up. Both are running the latest 10.6.4. I got a CD with data on it from a film processing shop and put it into the Mac and the Mac eventually gave me the same prompt as you get when you put in a fresh, unburnt, writable CD. I asked the Mac to eject the CD which it did.
I went back to the shop and they could mount the CD just fine (I think they had a PC). I tried a second time on the Mac -- same thing. I then put it in an AIX system and it could read it just fine too. So, the CD is "ok" as far as AIX and Windows is concerned but the Mac sees it as a fresh new unburnt CD.

I am trying to copy about 12000 songs from my internal HD to an external so I can wipe my drive clean and start again. The problem is that I keep getting this "disk cannot be read from or written to" every few hundred songs. The songs have come from all over, and there is no common thread to how I acquired any of them. I've actually got this error when trying to copy several different file types to an external HD and I've no earthly idea why. I'm sure the drive is riddled with irreparable errors which is why I want to wipe it, but I need to get a lot of these files over before I do so. Can anyone recommend some kind of utility that will identify and/or repair these corrupt files so I don't have to stop and start the transfer every 30 seconds?

I have a problem when I'm transferring files from my powerbook g4 to external hard disks such as lacie or ipod. It keeps popping up "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in file AVI could not be read or written. (Error Code -36). This happens just for certain files, not all of them. I don't know whether the hard disk has an issue or the file is corrupted and if the file is corrupted I hope there is a program that can restore it.

I've done a search for this and cannot seem to find a definitive solution. I've just upgraded to a larger Verbatim external drive and when I go to take files off my existing external drive across to it, it keeps coming up with the error: The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in *** can't be read or written. This only happens in certain folders. I am able to copy some folders across, but some I get this error. I've tried verifying both drives, formatting the Verbatim one for FAT32, repairing, but nothing seems to work. Some points that may be worth mentioning:
- The original external drive is formatted as MAC OS X Extended Journaled.
- Some of the folders I am having trouble with may have been originally created on a PC.
I would like to keep the new drive as FAT32, so I can use it on a PC if I need to down the road. I read something about using dot_clean via terminal, but I can never seem to get the path correct to my external drive. (The name of the external drive is MASTER HD) Would appreciate if anyone else has had the same problem could tell me what they did to solve it? Not sure why some files will copy over and some wont?

My Macbook pro wouldn't turn on. I booted to the installation DVD and installed OS X to the external drive. Once the installation was done, I was able to access my laptop without any problem and I retrieved all my files from the USERS Folder. I tried to copy my old files to the external disk, before formatting the system’s internal drive and reinstalling OS X.
However, at every attempt, I’d get “some data can’t bet read or written (Error Code -36)”. I ran a Verify/Repair Disk Permissions and this is what I got:

I am running osx 10.5.4 on a brand new macbook. I have an old, crappy external hard drive that works intermittently with a bunch of large files on it that I am copying to my new, fancy external hard drive. Problem is, more than half the time, finder will report "unable to complete the operation because some data on 'filename' could not be read or written. (Error Code -36)"
This would be no problem, as I could then just cancel the copy and try again. But Finder freezes the copy window open, and it will not close by clicking on the "x" in the copy window. The only way to try again is to relaunch Finder. I do not want to force finder to quit every time I try to copy a file to my new drive. Is relaunching finder repeatedly bad for my system or hardware? Seems like a glitch. Is there a way around this?

I am a Mac convert now two years and was beginning to truly believe Macs are impervious to the hair pulling and teeth gnashing so often associated with PC's but...I have been repeatedly trying to write to my WorldBook NAS which has previously worked beautifully but everytime I try to write anything remotely large, I get the message,
"An unexpected error has occurred the file could not be written to the disk. Error Code 51"
My NAS is 2TB and attached to my D-Link wireless. I have used it exclusively for my iTunes library and it has worked very nicely.I experienced this the first time with one of three movies I am adding to my library. After a couple tries, I decided to let iTunes copy it to the folder in it's process of adding it to the library and it worked fine. The following day I repeated the process and now I get the message through iTunes as well.

The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.

I have a MacPro 2009 with OS X 10.9.5 installed. I just added a PCI-e card with a SSD on it. Can I install a fresh copy of OS X 10.9.5 on the SSD and use it as a boot drive too? I plan on using my MacPro for audio production and the requirements are quite stringent to be able to provide good performance. So, my hope is that I can boot to my existing HD while using Office, Safari, etc but when I want to use it for audio production be able to boot to the SSD and have nothing on it except my audio software (Cubase, Wavelab, & associated plug-ins) on the working system. I also plan on upgrading to Yosemite for my "regular" HD boot drive but leaving Mavericks on the SSD for the time being as the audio production software is not yet compatible with Yosemite.
I don't want to just move from my existing HD to the new SSD as I don't want all the associated software to be copied over as well. Just a clean install of Mavericks on the extra internal SSD. There is nothing on the SSD at this time. Only initialized. I believe I can use a keyboard short-cut on boot to tell which drive to boot from but I have not been able to find a way to download Mavericks to do a fresh install of it on the new SSD.

I'm sending my 13" MBP in to Apple to have a minor mechanical issue repaired and so I'm installing a fresh copy of 10.5 just for security reasons. Yeah I know, paranoid maybe, but whatever. I have a time machine backup so it's really no sweat off my back. In any case, I thought I'd just use my retail 10.5 disc, but it gave me a bunch of grief. When the computer would boot up with the disc it would just go to a gray screen and sit there.
You'd hear the CD spin up and then stop and it just sat at the gray screen. I tried holding down 'option' before the full boot and it found the CD, but when you clicked it it would just freeze. I just put in the Leopard install disc that came with the computer and it's installing just fine. I guess I'm not too worried since I have the disc that came with the computer and I'll be getting Snow Leopard as well, but it'd be nice to know my retail 10.5 disc would work regardless.

Why is it when I insert a CD into the "slot" does my Mac not read it....it pushes it back out. I have the correct disc, I have verified that several times. I have also checked the System preferences and I have marked ask what to do when a disc is inserted, but for some reason I can't burn or read any discs. I am using a Macbook 10.4.11.

Ok, on my Powerbook in sig whenever I put a CD in it stays in for about 20 sec and then spits it back out, but when I boot up with the CD in it reads it just fine. This is making me mad because I'm trying to install the Burning Cruasde, and it is four discs.

My MBP 2.33Ghz has always been with discs but its starting to become a pain, a friend burnt a disc for me the other day which it read but thought it was blank.
Last night I put a +R DL DVD that worked in another machine and it just ejected it, I then put my 10.5 disc in and it worked fine.

I own a Macbook Pro and today I realised that it wasn't reading any DVDs. It has read them before in the past but it won't now.
Whenever I put the DVD in it waits for a while making it's regular sounds and after about a minute it ejects it, doesn't even read the disc or anything.

I'm trying to copy from my Vista hard drive to my Mac hard drive. I'm getting rid of the Vista machine.
I took out the hard drive from the Vista and put it in an external enclosure that is USB attached to my Mac. The Mac is unable to read the drive.
I thought that leopard was able to read NTFS file systems?
It acts as if it doesn't even understand the partition table format on the drive.
Is there a simple way to get this to work? Does NTFS-3G help reading the partition table?
