Software :: G4 Finder Keeps Rebooting Itself Every 20 Seconds Or So - Using 10.4.1
Feb 14, 2009I have something new and very weird going on, and if I didn't know better, I'd think it was a virus. I'm using a Mac G4, and system 10.4.1. For some unknown reason, no matter what I'm doing or what software I'm using, the Finder keeps rebooting itself and then ends up coming to the front, and it pops open a widow that shows my computer, an external drive I use, and the network icon. I've never seen this kind of thing happen before. It's like the computer is possessed. I'm not connected to any server or anything. I tried all the usual maintenance tricks...rebuilt permissions, used Cocktail and Preferential Treatment to fix and check things, then used Diskwarrior to rebuild the directory, and nothing has fixed the problem. It does this about every 10-20 seconds so it's practically impossible to get anything done.

Dec 7, 2014iMac 27 locking up after sleep mode requiring full power shut down and rebooting in safe mode then shutting down and rebooting normally.. Permissions and this check show no errors, the only error sleep mode failure. Boot up is very slow as well as wake up when possible is slow. Yosemite seems to need a new release in order to correct the boot problems. System operates more like a Windows machine than Apple machine what's going on?

Software :: G5 IMac Not Starting Up/after A Few Seconds The IMac Stops The Start-up Routine
Nov 16, 2008I have a G5 iMac - 2.1 ghz, 20", 250gb hd and 3gb ram, but it has been having problems starting up and it is also going to sleep midway through a task or at random times totally unprompted.
It now almost never starts up first time (I keep the iMac mains power lead always connected and the mains electricity supply turned on at all times now)- sometimes I will get the 'Start-up Chime' and then the cooling fans start spinning very loudly and then after a few seconds the iMac stops the start-up routine, but often when I try to start-up I don't even get the 'Start-up Chime' and I have to leave it for some time before trying again.
I can also now only get the iMac to run as a Firewire Target Disc by starting up with the T key held down and then using an old G4 (400mhz) Powerbook Titanium as the screen/keyboard by using the iMac HD as the startup disc for the Powerbook but this is obviously just a temporary work around.
I have also tried backing up all my data, and reinstalling the Mac OS X onto the iMac but the iMac still will not start-up normal and I still have to use it just as a Firewire HD.

Jun 29, 2012I am using a Mac Mini with a Realtek USB wireless dongle to connect to the internet. The software and drivers appear connected perfectly and i see the wireless utility and I can access my wireless network, which says signal strength 100%. I connect to it and it accepts the wireless key. Says connected. Then after a few seconds the connection is lost and it says 'Disconnected'. A few seconds later it connects then disconnects and this continues indefinitely but Safari never allows me to access any webpages.

Feb 10, 2010My screen savers (any of them) only run for a couple of seconds before returning me to the desktop or any applications running before I turn it on.
I've set the top right corner of my screen (expose') to be the Hot Corner for turning on the screen saver.
That works normally, but it just keeps on turning off shortly after =[
Testing the screen savers in System Preferences make it work but I really don't want to go all the way in there every time to turn it on...
I don't know what's wrong.
##UPDATE## I've found the answer to my problem. It lies in an app called Caffeine. I can either click it so it shows an empty cup or update the app to a more friendly version to my OSX and quit it.
I hope this can help anyone in trouble because this is a really understated issue (at least with Snow Leopard! since it has compatibility problems with the old Caffeine app).
IMac :: Clicking Sound Coming Out After Every 10 Seconds
Mar 23, 2010Every 10 seconds there is a clicking sound coming out of the iMac i5, I have a CD loaded at the moment and a USB Stick behind. This is Standby and it should be absolutely quite. I am typing this on my PC next to it and hear the click every 10-20 seconds. Very annoying and an absolute Dealbreaker. This is a 2000 USD machine!

Since the reformat I have not been able to get the computer to connect to the Airport Extreme on my Time Machine. Now my Time Machine was set to WPA2 so I changed it to a straight WEP and the iMac can handle that but it keeps dropping the connection every 15 to 20 seconds. Jun 4, 2014Just happening within the last couple weeks... 2.9GHz i5 iMac running 10.9.3..Energy Saver settings set to default from day 1..Display is set to turn off after 10 minutes, put hard disks to sleep when possible, and wake for network access.The screen used to pop right back on after hitting the keyboard or moving the bluetooth mouse... Now it still sometimes comes right back and other times take up to 15 seconds. Just happening the last 2-3 weeks.

Dec 27, 2010ive had a look around an only found bits an pieces relating to this but nothing really specific.i have an imac 3.06ghz, 4gb memory. less than a year old its been making some noises recently (like a downloading sound for afew seconds every so often) which happens every 30 seconds or so. this happens even when theres no programs open and im not connected to the internet!!! ive only really noticed it doing this the last month or so to be honest.
the computer has also been re-formated about a month ago as it was passed onto me from a family member, an im wondering if its got anything to do with that?is this a normal thing for macs an maybe i just havent noticed it before, or does it sound like something is wrong??

Nov 17, 2010My family just recently upgraded from an old PC to this 27" iMac, during the early part of the summer. While using it over the last little while, I would notice a noise that sounded like a harddrive spinning or possibly some sort of a fan noise. The best way to describe it would probably be as digital noise. It's not incredibly loud, but it's a decent volume, and can get quite annoying. It has a little bit of a squeak to it.
Over the last little while, it's become more constant. When the computer is in use, it'll usually occur quite often. It's quite annoying and obtrusive when I'm watching videos and I'd like to know what it could be.I think our computer is still under warranty, so I'm hoping to find out if it is something wrong, so I can get it replaced.
I've also been wondering if it's a fan, or a regular noise. However, it's so constant that I'm starting to wonder. The other night, I was watching a video and it seemed like it was coming on every 30 seconds for a long span of time. We don't run any memory heavy programs on this computer. If anything, we're just using Firefox, iTunes and/or Messenger. Sometimes Office. There's little to nothing stored on this computer, as it's brand new, so most of its memory is free.
OS X :: G4 Keeps Rebooting - Help Loading
Apr 18, 2009As of yesterday my battery no longer holds a charge. Was running fine on the power cord. Now this morning when I boot up the computer. It goes on the apple loading screen, gives me the apple sound but instead of loading into the desktop. It goes back to the gray screen with the apple in the middle loading. It does this repeatedly and won't load onto the desktop. Need some advise on what I need to do. I'm also not sure if I have any of the original boot disks.

Aug 20, 2014My 2008 Mac Pro keeps on rebooting randomly. About 2 minutes after boot, the cd drive makes an short noise, and the screen turns black. After a few seconds the mac will reboot. This happens almost always, and it makes the mac unusable to work on. When i do not start any applications on the mac after boot it will keep on running, but as soon as i start an application it will do the same.

Oct 28, 2010I've had my Macbook (10.5.8) for over two years and have had no problems until recently. It's crashed twice in the past month, and before that (for a few months) it has been extremely slow. I've cleaned out everything I didn't need and placed most of my documents onto a external hard drive in hopes that this would speed things up - it has not. When the thing crashes it basically reboots itself with out any warning, losing my data. Both times this has happened I had photoshop and Acrobat 6.0 Professional open (I've been editing photos of texts of my research and turning them into pdf - some of these files are quite large (400 colored pages) ie. 600mb). The system usually crashes and reboots while I am editing an unsaved pdf in Acrobat.

May 8, 2012Yesterday my wife's iMac froze and she tried powering off manually by holding the power button down on the back of the machine. Then she tried to boot it back up and got the welcome screen but she couldn't select an account to login to. Tries restarting again and gets a blank blue screen.
Call me out to take a look.
Not knowing much, I googled some help sites and performed the following:
SMC reset
PRAM reset
Verified disk permissions and repaired disk permissions
Boot from install disk (repaired permissions and verify disk)
Restarted and everything seemed to be working fine. Until this afternoon. She was in the middle of an upload and the computer restarted itself. She's in the middle of the upload again (almost finished). But when it's finished, I'd like to troubleshoot this some more.

Dec 13, 2010I am currently using OSX 10.5.8 Leopard and have run into a problem. When ever I attempt to mount a .DMG file, Finder goes unresponsive and will not re launch. The .DMG is downloaded from a verified clean source and the default program to open is the Disk Image Mounter Utility. I try going to /System/Library/Core Services, and I see the Disk Image Mounter Utility listed, yet when I attempt to open it, nothing happens and it is not even listed in the activity monitor. I have tried mounting several .DMG files and each time the same problem occurs and can only be solved by rebooting the system. I have just recently tried updating my software to the latest version and still no fix.
