I have an iMac G5 OS 10. that froze up while surfing the net using Firefox. I shut it down and tried to reboot. It chimes and comes up with the gray screen with the Apple logo, but will not proceed beyond that. The fan kicks in and will not proceed.
View 1 RepliesI was trying to update my G5 to snow leopard from leopard 10.5.5 when it said it could not install. So I decided to quit installation and boot from 10.5.5. It started up and reaches the apple loading screen but goes off without reaching the log in screen. I have tried booting from the CD again and resetting the PRAM but it still wont work and continues to do the same

Re-start helps, but only briefly, until another freeze-up.
Tried using another mouse, connected to my USB port.
(Usually, and without problem, I use a wireless LogiTech mouse.)
Recently my 13 inch MBP has been freezing a lot. It seems similar to the 1.7 firmware problem many are reporting, but from what I can tell from their posts the freezing only lasts 15-30 seconds then they can work again. On my computer the freezing does not stop and I am forced to hold the power button to shutdown every time. When I attempt to reboot the computer after that I have to reset the PRAM every time.
I am using a 3rd party hard drive that worked fine up until a little less than a week ago, and also worked fine in my old plastic white macbook. When I put the stock hard drive back in it seems to work fine, but I admittedly haven't used it as extensively and not all of my apps are installed, but most of my freezing occurs in safari as well sometimes itunes.If anyone knows how to downgrade firmware back to 1.6 I would try that as well, but I am not sure if that is possible.
Just updated to OS Lion and upon reboot after install it froze. How do I restart without doing a hard shutdown/restart? I have never encountered a freeze with any apple product, what gives.

I recently received an iMac as a "gift"... turns out it has some problems. I am unable to reinstall the default OS (Mountain Lion) because I have yet to be able to partition the HDD correctly. The error I keep getting is: Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.At this point, the default Macintosh HD isn't showing, so it must of been erased/deleted.

I have a 17" iMac G4 that I was rung Tiger with, then I installed Leopard 10.5. I use this as a second computer. All is fine except that my Epson scanner does not work with 10.5. I've tried the latest drivers. I'd like to reinstall Tiger. I used the 10.5 disc to reformat the drive and start from square one. When I boot from my original Tiger disc it starts opening it's windows, but when I get to the point where I can choose Install or use Disk Utility to reformat from the Tiger disc, all windows freeze and I need to hard reboot from the power switch. Am I correct to assume that 10.5 won't let 10.4 to reinstall. Is this correct?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Mac is not starting and is asking me to reboot from the time machine however it is showing me that the latest complete backup is form September. Should I reboot from there and once I am in I will be able to rescue latest backups or should I re-install the OS? If I re-install the OS will I loose everything or will things still be there, including folders that were loose in the desktop as opposed to being inside the hard drive?

I was using my Mac (Macbook Pro 15" screen) and tried opening a file in GarageBand, at which point a warning message came up saying something about a midi file and something not being allowed, and then froze, resulting in me having to switch the computer off from the power button and restarting (Sadly I didnt realise that this would be the start of a whole host of problems and didnt make a note of the warning message). After rebooting I got the 'stuck on the blue screen with the Apple logo and infinitly spinning wheel' problem that i've seen in a few posts. having tried numerous suggestions posted with no change I ended up taking it to the genius section of an Apple store. When i got it back they said that it may have been a corrupted file, and that they re-installed and reset the starting programs (Something along those lines, I cant quite remember). I can now get onto the computer and use it, though some new problems have arisen.......

I rebooted and it will come up to a gray screen and then sit there. The fans start revving up and it gets really really hot. Of course I haven't done a backup recently, so I need the information on the computer.

But unfortunately, when I tried to start up, the following pics appeared, When I boot up the computer by pressing the power button, there were 3 unexpected things happened: the "Forbidden" icon showed, and a few seconds later, it changes to the "Apple" icon quickly and changes back to "Forbidden" immediately, this situation would repeat in about 10 minutes or more(up to 30 minutes or an hour, it depends). When the Apple icon showing with the loading indicator, after a long time waiting ,the system boot up successfully. the "Apple" icon came up, and the the loading indicator came also. what could I did is just waiting. the system boot up failed and an expected error occurred. something just like the situation One, but after the waiting, the Diagnostic model appeared or an common error known as "5-Country Languages". After I restart the mac , the alternative situation above repeated.

Phone is AT&T 4S, 16 GB v. 5.0.1 (9A406, current version).I have used iCloud match on this phone, but now have it shut off. When I use iTunes to view the music on the iPhone, I see 1864 songs. iTunes sees this as 1864 items, 5 days, zero bytes). All are streams. All are greyed out. I can't delete them. I can't overwrite them becuase I can't sync.
This problem is on every computer I have tried. 4 different computers, all running either Lion, Snow Leopard, Windows 746x or Windows 8. View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter putting my MacBook Pro to sleep or rebooting, the mouse does not work anymore. I can move the mouse pointer, but can't left-click.
It seems as OS X senses a "left mouse button pressed" condition the whole time, when I wake the MacBook an move the pointer, I continuously draw selections on the screen, as if I pressed the left button and moved the pointer.
The only thing that helps is a Cmd + alt + P + R reboot, then the funtionality is fully restored, but after putting it to sleep or rebooting normally, the problem's back everytime. It's not a trackpad issue, connecting a USB mouse results in the same symptoms. I also did an SMC reset (removed battery and pressed power button 5 sec) I travel a lot with my MAcBook and have to do a hard reboot everytime when using it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI forgot my admin password on my iMac recently and so i used the reboot with OS X snow leopard install disc to reset the keychain, but now on my login screen, it used to be just my account name, there is one called "Other" so i went into accounts in system preferences and tried to delete it but it isnt there?is really annoying me p.s. the "other account" isnt actually an account it says "Other" and when you click on it asks for your username and password...so i type in the admin accounts name and password (admin account is the only one on this computer), and it just opens up my admin account.

I already did a disk repair (it found no errors), repaired the disk permissions and used OnyX to see if there's anything wrong. It still has this problem and I don't know what else to do. Whenever i restart using the power switch it comes to the screen which has only apple symbol and freezes with that.
I think i should remove that and then it will work fine. I dont have any mac os cds to reboot from the cds.

I have a brand new Macbook Pro (Christmas 2011), and today it was installing updates. It stated that it needed to restart to complete the updates, so I confirmed it. It shut down fine, but then didn't start up again on it's own. I waited for about an hour before manually starting the computer by pressing the power button. It did the opening chime and then the logo screen came up, but then it started a series of beeps along with blinking battery light (it is fully charged). It froze on the logo screen and continued to beep for a half an hour before I forced it to shut down (control+command+power button).
I tried restarting it in safe mode (holding the shift button down during startup), but it only resulted in the computer freezing on the logo screen for about five minutes before shutting itself off (no beeping or light that time, though). I went through my instruction manual as well as online searches to see if maybe I could somehow restore the computer to factory settings. I can get it to get into the Disk Utility section (holding down the option button during startup), but I'm absolutely terrified of erasing something I shouldn't.

When I start up my computer everything looks normal, all icons are on the desktop and my cursor is able to move. The problem is I can't affect any of the icons on the desktop (folders, files, etc)-every thing is frozen. After about 3 minutes it unfreezes and everything then works. what is the problem?

I have 2011 Macbook Pro (one of those that usually freezes during booting due to GPU failure). My Macbook will only boot if the GPU doesn't kick in during the start up. (When I'm very lucky the computer will get to the desktop and I can disable the GPU with gfxCardStatus). Sometimes I can boot the machine if I wrap it in a blanket to overheat it. Then it won't activate the GPU during booting if I'm lucky.
This is my question: Can I update my OS X if I maybe have to reboot a frozen machine 50 times before I reach the desktop? This would very probably mean that the OS would install and then ask for a reboot. And then I would maybe have to power off and retry to reboot many many times. Would this FUBAR the system. or would it work when I finally got it up and running?
Is the update installed 100% BEFORE the reboot, or are some of the updates installed AFTER the reboot? If that is the case, I would think it would have an effect if I had to power down the machine 50 times to get that one "lucky" reboot?

I have a Early 2008 Mac Pro running Lion. Its been running well but then last night it froze while I was on the internet. Pretty rare that this happens so I held the power off button and turned it off. Turned it back on and it made the chime noise, apple logo came up, a grey spinning wheel came up for about 30 seconds and then it stopped spinning and the computer froze there.
I tried a bunch of different things. I tried rebooting in safe mode, Recovery mode, From time machine external hard drive, Tried booting in the Windows partition that I have (its on the same as the boot drive I'm trying to boot in Lion off of).

i have an ibook g4, and was using it just fine the other night, then when i came back to it a few minutes later it had shut off completely. now when i boot up, the computer freezes at the spinning gear startup screen or at the blank blue screen immediately after the spinning gear. it will boot in single user mode, but it won't boot up with my os x install disc. does anyone know any unix i could try to use to get my mac up and running again, or has anyone had this same problem and knows a fix for it?

It regularly crashes and is getting worse - at least twice a day then i have to turn it off with the power button. When i go to reboot a folder with a question mark appears on the screen. I usually then have to turn it back off and wait several hours for the mac to reboot again...
