OS X :: Pointer Freezes Up And Needs Reboot
Dec 14, 2009
System 10.3.9 working without problem ... until...pointer freezes up.
Re-start helps, but only briefly, until another freeze-up.
Tried using another mouse, connected to my USB port.
(Usually, and without problem, I use a wireless LogiTech mouse.)

What does it mean when my 13" Macbook Pro pointer turns into a spinning color wheel after a web page loads, but freezes while this is happening? Every now and it does this for just a few seconds. At first I though maybe it lost my home Wifi signal, but it's showing 4 full bars.

My mouse continuously freezes when I have to many applications open. I have the mirror door G4. When it freezes I can access the F11 and F12 buttons on the keyboard, but have to restart the computer. I have switched the mouse, but it does not fix it. The more I use the computer the less it happens. It appears to happen more with multiple browser windows open in Safari.

Recently my 13 inch MBP has been freezing a lot. It seems similar to the 1.7 firmware problem many are reporting, but from what I can tell from their posts the freezing only lasts 15-30 seconds then they can work again. On my computer the freezing does not stop and I am forced to hold the power button to shutdown every time. When I attempt to reboot the computer after that I have to reset the PRAM every time.
I am using a 3rd party hard drive that worked fine up until a little less than a week ago, and also worked fine in my old plastic white macbook. When I put the stock hard drive back in it seems to work fine, but I admittedly haven't used it as extensively and not all of my apps are installed, but most of my freezing occurs in safari as well sometimes itunes. If anyone knows how to downgrade firmware back to 1.6 I would try that as well, but I am not sure if that is possible.

I have an iMac G5 OS 10. that froze up while surfing the net using Firefox. I shut it down and tried to reboot. It chimes and comes up with the gray screen with the Apple logo, but will not proceed beyond that. The fan kicks in and will not proceed.

I have a 17" iMac G4 that I was rung Tiger with, then I installed Leopard 10.5. I use this as a second computer. All is fine except that my Epson scanner does not work with 10.5. I've tried the latest drivers. I'd like to reinstall Tiger. I used the 10.5 disc to reformat the drive and start from square one. When I boot from my original Tiger disc it starts opening it's windows, but when I get to the point where I can choose Install or use Disk Utility to reformat from the Tiger disc, all windows freeze and I need to hard reboot from the power switch. Am I correct to assume that 10.5 won't let 10.4 to reinstall. Is this correct?

I was using my Mac (Macbook Pro 15" screen) and tried opening a file in GarageBand, at which point a warning message came up saying something about a midi file and something not being allowed, and then froze, resulting in me having to switch the computer off from the power button and restarting (Sadly I didnt realise that this would be the start of a whole host of problems and didnt make a note of the warning message). After rebooting I got the 'stuck on the blue screen with the Apple logo and infinitly spinning wheel' problem that i've seen in a few posts. having tried numerous suggestions posted with no change I ended up taking it to the genius section of an Apple store. When i got it back they said that it may have been a corrupted file, and that they re-installed and reset the starting programs (Something along those lines, I cant quite remember). I can now get onto the computer and use it, though some new problems have arisen.......

After putting my MacBook Pro to sleep or rebooting, the mouse does not work anymore. I can move the mouse pointer, but can't left-click.
It seems as OS X senses a "left mouse button pressed" condition the whole time, when I wake the MacBook an move the pointer, I continuously draw selections on the screen, as if I pressed the left button and moved the pointer.
The only thing that helps is a Cmd + alt + P + R reboot, then the funtionality is fully restored, but after putting it to sleep or rebooting normally, the problem's back everytime. It's not a trackpad issue, connecting a USB mouse results in the same symptoms. I also did an SMC reset (removed battery and pressed power button 5 sec) I travel a lot with my MAcBook and have to do a hard reboot everytime when using it.

My pointer/trackpad is doing weird things on its own.
For example: If my pointer is sitting idle it displays a drop down box that says "Back, forward, stop, bookmark this page, send link, view all,and various other selections." Another example, if I use the trackpad to go to an icon on my dock, sometimes it takes the icon and takes if off dock and removes it. Another example, if I'm down at the bottom of my screen and typing like I am now, I get done and say I scroll up to the top to go somewhere else, all the areas that I traveled across get highlighted (like a paste and copy highlight). I have checked my settings in trackpad and that looks fine. I have rebooted, shut down, unplugged my internet and even went to disk utilities and repair. I did notice this after I have visited a site to order something that I needed to add a picture too. In order for me to drag my picture to thing I was ordering I needed to use their tool. It was after this that my pointer/track pad has been working weird.

I just got my iMac, and I have a problem with mighty mouse. Sometimes, when I move the mouse just a little, the pointer will "jump" to one side of the screen... it's very frustrating.
Is it due because my mousepad has different colours on it ?
That's my only explanation. Maybe the mousepad different colours cause reflection on the pointer that make it jump all over the screen...

The story behind it - I used it a bit at home, connected to the AC adapter, then closed it and put it in a laptop bag (quite tight on both sides - like a sleeve [you have to slide the computer out - it doesn't open]).
Then it was in the bag for 10-15minutes, I took it out, opened it up and this came up! (while it was like this, I could see the black mouse pointer and move it about just fine)
I did a hard restart, and then everything was fine.

On Windows you can have 2 pointer devices connected at once and easily switch between the two. Can I do the same on OSX so I could have a Magic Mouse for regular use and my Microsoft X8 for gaming?

I have a new UMBP 15" and just recently, without changing anything it seems. The pointer has serious issues moving around on the screen, especially in slow operation/movements it will jerk around and not stay where its supposed to be. If I just hold my finger in one place it will jump around very noticeably, inches even. Even clicking sometimes takes a few hard taps when just barely touching it would work. I've tried restarting and that didn't clear it up as well as changing some scrolling speeds. Just wondering if anyone else had seen this problem.

Sometimes, if I click an icon (usually on my desktop) it'll just "stick" to the mouse pointer, it'll appear as if I am still clicking and holding the icon, and it drags around. I also can't trash, drop or do anything with it. Other programs on the computer can't be used either because it's still using that icon. I'm forced to use keyboard commands to restart Finder or press the "esc" key, which works until I click any other icon again. This happens with text and pictures also.

My iBook G4 (bought early 2004, OS 10.3.9) seems to have (all of a sudden) two layers of problems. One is failure to start-up, which won't go beyond the plain blue screen stage, for almost all procedures. (I can access terminal mode, and also, sometimes, reach the login window by holding shift key on startup. Strangely, the whole startup sequence seems to roll over normally after *several hours* of inactivity, but this miracle will not recur before the following day.) Now, second layer: In these rare circumstances when booting and login succeed, I can't work more than a few seconds, one minute maximum, before the pointer freezes and I lost all control.
For instance (a typical sequence), I face the page with the butterfly with my username, which I am allowed to click, then I have time to write in the password before freezing happens. After a few minutes staring at the page, I see it alternate rapidly (about three times a second) with a black screen, and vertical black lines dance in front of the login window during the fractions of second it's visible. I have been able (during these rare seconds of unrestrained access) to repair permissions, verify and repair the disk (several times), proceed with fsck, etc. The material diagnostic is "all OK", which I find hard to believe. (The disk ejection system doesn't seem to work properly, for one thing.) The problems appeared five days ago just after, coincidence or not, I tried to read an MP3 format CD.

When I click on a desktop item and try to drag it, the item doesn't move - a shadow of the icon sticks to the pointer and I have difficulty releasing the shadow icon. I have verified and repaired the hard drive. I have deleted finder preference files, but to no avail. I can stop this issue by putting the Mac to sleep and waking it, but I shouldn't have to do this.

Somehow I can't drag and drop files/programs/icons any more. Not on my desktop, not within my dock. When I click on an icon to drag, it will stick to my mouse pointer, but only as a ghost. When I try to release it, it won't drop to the designated area or folder. The icon just keeps sticking to my mouse pointer, where ever I take it. Only after using esc and clicking.

I have a IMac G4 mod. Power mac4,2 operating system osx version 10.411 processor 800 MHz 768 MB SDRAM. Every now and then my mouse pointer freezers up and I have to unplug the mouse and it starts working again. If it does not unfreeze I have to restart. Then I am back in business. Some times the whole screen goes gray with a black square-telling me to shut down and restart.

Something weird happens to my mouse sometimes and it seems to only happen (I think) when Parallels is running. The pointer just disappears. It turns invisible. It doesn't only happen when the pointer is inside the Parallels window, it also happens when I am using Mac apps. I am using Version 2.5 (and can see no real reason to upgrade to 3) and yes, I have installed Parallels tools!

I have just installed a new Mac Pro. Everything works except I get occasional mouse pointer freezes. They last for about 1 second each time and seem to occur randomly, on average with 1-2 min intervals.
The only things I have installed on top of OS X so far driver wise is MouseWorks to power my Kensington trackball. I use my older large full-keyed white Pro keyboard and only use the smaller wireless one remotely. I have tried deactivating Bluetooth but the mouse freezes still persist.

Today I was working with my iMac without any problem, suddenly the mouse pointer start behaving very odd, when I tried to click an icon, menu or whatever the mouse start moving not allowing me do the work, I changed the wireless mouse suspecting was a hardware problem but when I connected the USB mouse I got the same problem, then I shutdown the iMac but after starting I got the same problem. I suspect is a trojan virus but I heard that Leopard operating system is very robust and virus is not currently a problem.

Brand new to mac book pro 2.66ghz from pc this week. Learning the ropes although slowly. I've been watching some tutorial online on different sites and I'm wondering why (it seemed to work at first) when I click to view in full screen mode the pointer stays on the screen. When watching a movie on dvd or full screen you tube video the pointer is supposed to disappear. Since I don't know my way around yet and what to look for I figured I'd throw it to the experts.

I have had to do hard restarts in Lion when it satrts up with a black scren and the mouse pointer and nothing else. It happened most recently today with a scheduled wake up from being asleep. The other day it restarted with the pointer acting as a painting program and actually colored the path of the cursor until it eventually painted in enough of the login window to enter my password and log in... I have reinstalled the os from the App store and it still acts strange some times...

Currently running 10.6.8 with Safari 5.1.7 on my 1.83 Macbook Pro...Â
Several weeks ago I noticed an odd bit of behavior from Safari. If I click the back button (or hot-key back one page), and then move the pointer using my trackpad, the displayed page reloads. It doesn't reload the page if I use two fingers to drag the page up or down, it only does it if I touch the pad with one finger.Â
I have shut off all my extensions, so what could be causing this?
