Mac Pro :: Computer Desktop Freezes For 3 Minutes After Start Up?
Jun 26, 2012
When I start up my computer everything looks normal, all icons are on the desktop and my cursor is able to move. The problem is I can't affect any of the icons on the desktop (folders, files, etc)-every thing is frozen. After about 3 minutes it unfreezes and everything then works. what is the problem?

i have an ibook g4, and was using it just fine the other night, then when i came back to it a few minutes later it had shut off completely. now when i boot up, the computer freezes at the spinning gear startup screen or at the blank blue screen immediately after the spinning gear. it will boot in single user mode, but it won't boot up with my os x install disc. does anyone know any unix i could try to use to get my mac up and running again, or has anyone had this same problem and knows a fix for it?

My dual screens are flashing, sometimes fading in and out of blue. Sometimes when they flash back to my normal desktop from the blue, everything is frozen, I can't move the mouse or do anything. What is going on with this? I have a Mac Pro Tower, OS X 10.5.4, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core intel Xeon processing, 6 GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM RAM. I use this machine to run a recording studio. It is used primarily with a Pro Tools HD3 rig.

Our 2011 iMac with SSD takes 2:15 (two minutes and fifteen seconds) to start up. Start up on a SSD should be faster. OS X version 10.7.4 and applications are on the SSD. Any suggestions for correcting this lack of speedy start up?

My computer, a Powermac G5, Dual 2.0Ghz, 1st Edition Released Oct 2003, will just freeze. It usually happens within 5 minutes of booting into the operating system. I am also unable to boot from the Leopard or Tiger DVD's to try and install a fresh copy of the OS as they freeze during the install. This is what I have tried so far, but to no avail:
Resetting the RAM and Graphics Card
Resetting the Power Management (PMU)
Resetting the PRAM
Now this is the even stranger thing. I installed a copy of PowerPC Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and it works fine. This makes me think that it is unlikely to be a hardware issue.

My Imac freezes up a lot, usually after 10 to 15 minutes of being on. I suspect it has something to do with overheating. I have to get my data off of the drive before I take it into the Apple store for fear that they will will just replace the drive and all will be lost. I have a fan blowing on it now in the back and am copying data onto an external drive little by little until it freezes up.
I bought it last fall and have a 3 year warranty on it and this will be my second time bringing it in for repair. The first time it was a problem right out of the box when I brought it home and it was replaced. It's a 3.06 processor, 24 inch screen. I am not impressed by the hardware reliability and the all in one system. I am regretting buying the imac after being a PC user for so long and I am using my Windows PC to write this. I suspect the cooling system could be better on my IMAC given the compressed footprint.

This is my first Mac user problem posting going back to my original SE! Power PC based imac running leopard 10.5.8 starts up but then mouse freezes after a few mins. Managed to change sleep mode to 15mins - same problem. Can't boot from Disk as same problem, also command+option and shift all still have mouse unmoved! Obvious change of keyboard and mouse have no effect. Could this be related to offspring's addition of ipad plugged into usb a few weeks back? He tends to unplug the device without ejecting!

I just purchased my mac book pro on the 18th of may from an apple store, brand new. I decided to upgrade the RAM myself since it is a much better deal, however once I replaced the RAM my computer began to run much slower and it began crashing (showing a gray window that says "please restart your computer" in many different languages) so i restarted my computer and the problem continues, after 12min of running that window appears. I replaced the RAM with the original and the problem still continued. I have run normal hardware tests and extended hardware tests as well as PRAM reset and still nothing changed. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I'm totally lost on what is going on with my brandnew macbook pro!I should also add, I have been running the extended hardware test multiple times to see if it will crash during that and after 1hr it hasnt crashed yet.

My Macbook with 4 gb RAM won't boot standard, safe, or Recovery.. All three results in grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel which freezes after a few minutes. It also won't boot a bootable Mavericks usb with install package. I can boot single user mode and also view whats going on in verbose.. I am including a photo of where the script stops. PS: I've already tried resetting PRAM and the SMC has been reset as well.

Only an issue in OS.X not OS.9. Pulling the power cord eliminates issue for next start but not subsequent starts. Pulling the cord isn't easy how the computer etc is set up so I'd like to rectify the issue.

My Macbook over the last month has been running slower than usual. I first started experiencing problems after I installed and uninstalled parallels. When I went to uninstall parallels I got an error during the installation, and I removed that files manually. My macbook started responding slower than usual and I repaired the disk permissions and that fixed the problem temporarily.I then downloaded MacKeeper and to clean my MacBook up and that seemed to fix the problem for the short term. Then the other night I shut down my MacBook and I just noticed my time machine backup was still running.Ever since then it has taken an excess of 10 minutes to start up if not longer. When I say start up I am refering from the white screen with the apple logo to the login menu. I have tried the reset PRAM, and I'm running out of ideas, the only thing I have left in my mind is to try and remove the battery and put it in again.

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard, once start-up is complete, I am not able to use the keyboard or track pad button for about 3-4 minutes. They are frozen - the cursor/arrow move according to trackpad/mouse movements, but anything kind of button/key input is not registered.

I keep my time machine HD unplugged from my laptop to reduce the clutter, when i plug it in, time machine starts automatically backing up. It says "Preparing Backup..." and it stays like that for a while. I've had it like that for about 15 minutes.

Sometimes when I open safari, it stalls my computer for literally 2-4 minutes! It is extremely annoying. During that time, I can't open any apps, can't relaunch finder, can't force quit safari. I am basically stuck waiting for it to get itself out of being stalled.

When using Safari in Snow Leopard, every 5 minutes the entire computer will stop responding and I get the beach ball for 15 - 30 seconds. Clicking around does nothing. Then things will return to normal. When not using Safari, the computer runs normally. Brand now MacBook Pro.

i bought my new MacBook Air last week and unboxed it today.
First problem I noted is that the clock time is 5 minutes fast. I don't know why.
I clicked "Set date and time automatically" (tried different servers), as well as having clicked "Set time zone automatically using current location". Still, the clock is precisely 5 minutes fast than it should be. The laptop IS connected to the internet and I have re-started it a couple of times. Still, 5 minutes fast.
Why is that the case? And how can it be resolved? (I would prefer not to manually reset the time).
(I am not transferring any files to this computer until the time issue is resolved because of concerns over time stamp).

I have a iMac as our main computer which has the main iTunes account. I have a ethernet connection off a Time Capsule/Air Play Wireless to that. I just got a Apple TV 2 and that has been working nearly seamlessly via a wireless connect from the Time Capsule The problem is with the Mac Book Pro (early 2011, 17", 2.2 ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB DDR3, AMD radeon HD 6750 1024 MB Graphics, all updated on all software)What my twist is that when I start to stream a tv show from iTunes via home sharing it will play for 5-20 min and then just stop and return to the main iTunes menu This occurs on TV Shows purchased from Apple, From DVD's I have ripped with HandBrake and Bit Torrents I have also ripped with HandBrake (Into Apple TV 2 format) I've read over and over the Apple suggested trouble shooting. The only non Apple product/software in the mix is Norton for Mac on the Mac Book and the iMac however I have turned off the Firewall on that as well as experimented with turning on and off the Mac Firewall I have a older router from my ISP however the Apple TV is working fine so I *think* that has been elminatedÂ

Have my iMac since March and absolutely no problem. Installed Snow Leopard this weekend and worked just perfect UNTIL I turned the machine off. The next day restarted my computer and now takes about 2 minutes to boot up/then when screen comes up it is frozen for about another 2-3 minutes before can start using it. So basically, takes about 5 minutes from start up to being able to use my iMac. Spent an hour on phone with Apple on Monday night--they really tried--but couldn't fix it and now want me to bring to local Apple authorize dealer to work on it. Called them and they think it is the hard drive going out. But just doesn't make sense---worked just fine until I loaded 10.6 and then turned off machine. Before I bring it in and have them open it up and fool with the internal hard drive---DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA'S WHAT IS HOLDING UP THE STARTUP.

But a few days ago, when I turned it on it took about 5 minutes to boot. I already did a disk repair (it found no errors), repaired the disk permissions and used OnyX to see if there's anything wrong. It still has this problem and I don't know what else to do. Sometimes it also freezes for no reason.
