MacBook Pro :: Freezes On Start Up And Beeps
Jun 2, 2012
I have a brand new Macbook Pro (Christmas 2011), and today it was installing updates. It stated that it needed to restart to complete the updates, so I confirmed it. It shut down fine, but then didn't start up again on it's own. I waited for about an hour before manually starting the computer by pressing the power button. It did the opening chime and then the logo screen came up, but then it started a series of beeps along with blinking battery light (it is fully charged). It froze on the logo screen and continued to beep for a half an hour before I forced it to shut down (control+command+power button).
I tried restarting it in safe mode (holding the shift button down during startup), but it only resulted in the computer freezing on the logo screen for about five minutes before shutting itself off (no beeping or light that time, though). I went through my instruction manual as well as online searches to see if maybe I could somehow restore the computer to factory settings. I can get it to get into the Disk Utility section (holding down the option button during startup), but I'm absolutely terrified of erasing something I shouldn't.

So, I have a late 2011 MBP 2GH i7, OSX 10.9.3. 500GB HD 16 BG 1600 Mhz DDR3. Â
The problems started a while ago when the computer started freezing at random times. The mouse would move and there was no "pinwheel" but the computer was unresponsive. When I closed the screen the power was still on and the screen did not shut off. The only way to reset the computer was to hold the power button and do a hard reset. I don't remember if I replaced the RAM from 4BG to 8GB Crucial Memory before or after the computer started freezing, either way, shortly after or around the time when I replaced the ram the hard drive also failed.
I replaced the HD with I believe a Seagate hybrid drive with a small solid state segment. This whole time the computer is still freezing and now since I have a hybrid drive the Apple store can't support because it's not factory specs and MacMall here in Santa Monica can't find anything wrong with the hardware or software after running all of their tests.Â
At this time I have a feeling it is the ram so I purchase a new 16GB Crucial RAM. Everything is great till it yet once again freezes in the same way as before BUT!! Now if the computer sleeps because the battery run's low, when I plug it in and the computer reboots (grey opaque screen with the vertical lines as the bottom) it starts beeping 3 times. I hard reset via the power button and the computer boots up as normal (although a little slower). Â

This problem typically occured when I was doing something particularly strenuous, but I just recently had it happen while browsing the internet. The computer will suddenly freeze and start beeping loudly in groups of three with an LED on the front flashing in sync with the sound. I am running Snow leopar if that has any bearing on this problem. What exactly is causing this?

I just had my iMac hard drive replaced due to some corruption found on it. I had it into the genius bar because of this same issue - beeping three beeps and then locking up requiring a manual shut down. Just got it back this week. Happened again after about 6 days.Running presentation software my system was purchased optimally to run.

I have a Powerbook G4 17 that I have been working on. I recently replaced the screen and verified that it worked prior to buttoning it back up. When buttoning the powerbook back up, I nicked two wires with screws. One was part of the LCD wire that comes from the LCD itself. The second was the airport wire that is wrapped around the screen. I wrapped them back up with a cover and preceeded to get using my comp again. Once finally put back together, I could not get it to turn on.

I recently got an 20' 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Imac. It came with 1 gig of Ram. I purchased 2 2Gig SODIMM chips from New Egg. The ram specs matches what the little manual says. ddr2, pc2-5300 667MHz. When I install the new chips, the mac won't start. Period. No beeps, no nothing. I can sort of hear it try to start, then quits.
When I put back the original ram chip. Works again.When I have the original ram chip AND 1 of the new chips (for a total of 3 gigs of RAM) it works.Swapped one new chip with the other (as long as the original is in) Works.Original Chip is on the right side, New is on the left. Swapped places. Works.The mac will start ONLY if the original is in place. I should be able to start it with the nes ones in but it won't. I know both works because I swapped them.Anybody have any ideas on what's going on? Is there a setting somewhere I need to change or something?

I turned my iMac on (2008 model) but after 10 minutes it went black and beeped 3 times loudly, repeating at 5 second cycles. Shut it down by pressing the ON button for 5 sec. Restarted and all worked for a hour before repeating the same problem...screen and keyboard and touchpad all locked out....shut down with the ON button. On restart it gave me the 3 beeps every 5 sec with an ALL BLACK screen...no hard disk whirring, either. I don't know how to do cardiac massage on an iMac. Is it dead? Is it the processor? Is it the video card? Is it the hard disc?Â

But a few days ago, when I turned it on it took about 5 minutes to boot. I already did a disk repair (it found no errors), repaired the disk permissions and used OnyX to see if there's anything wrong. It still has this problem and I don't know what else to do. Sometimes it also freezes for no reason.

I have 2011 Macbook Pro (one of those that usually freezes during booting due to GPU failure). My Macbook will only boot if the GPU doesn't kick in during the start up. (When I'm very lucky the computer will get to the desktop and I can disable the GPU with gfxCardStatus). Sometimes I can boot the machine if I wrap it in a blanket to overheat it. Then it won't activate the GPU during booting if I'm lucky.Â
This is my question: Can I update my OS X if I maybe have to reboot a frozen machine 50 times before I reach the desktop? This would very probably mean that the OS would install and then ask for a reboot. And then I would maybe have to power off and retry to reboot many many times. Would this FUBAR the system. or would it work when I finally got it up and running?Â
Is the update installed 100% BEFORE the reboot, or are some of the updates installed AFTER the reboot? If that is the case, I would think it would have an effect if I had to power down the machine 50 times to get that one "lucky" reboot?

Didn't notice this article before posting. [URL:...] apple on Thursday released an EFI firmware update for 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models that fixes a freezing or stalling problem. According to Apple, EFI Firmware Update 1.9, which requires Mac OS X 10.6.4, "resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation." The update, which is a 2.16MB download, also improves external display compatibility. Issues with stalling and external displays on the mid 2010 Macbook Pros had been acknowledged in Apple Support articles. The most recent revision to the MacBook Pro line came in April. [URL:....]

I installed the following version of logitech cam on my mac. It asked for restart and it freezes from that point on.
Software:
* Title: Logitech Control Center for Macintosh OS X
* Software Version: 2.6
* Post Date: 6/8/2008
* Platform: Macintosh OS X
* File Size: Approximately 13 Mb
Whenever i restart using the power switch it comes to the screen which has only apple symbol and freezes with that.
I think i should remove that and then it will work fine. I dont have any mac os cds to reboot from the cds.
If i have to can i purchase any mac os cd and reboot from that? But I would want to do that without getting the cd. is there any command using which i get in and delete that installed file.

I have a Early 2008 Mac Pro running Lion. Its been running well but then last night it froze while I was on the internet. Pretty rare that this happens so I held the power off button and turned it off. Turned it back on and it made the chime noise, apple logo came up, a grey spinning wheel came up for about 30 seconds and then it stopped spinning and the computer froze there. Â
I tried a bunch of different things. I tried rebooting in safe mode, Recovery mode, From time machine external hard drive, Tried booting in the Windows partition that I have (its on the same as the boot drive I'm trying to boot in Lion off of). Â

My Black Macbook will not boot up. Instead it rests at the gray screen and does 3 beeps. I have done research and it is supposed to indicate a RAM problem but my RAM [i believe] is fine, I even rechecked the slots and everything. This has happened before but I just rebooted and it worked fine but now it is not. I tried plugging in my Mac into different power outlets and even having it run without being plugged in but it fails to make a difference. I have scheduled a genius appointment and I know my macbook is older than a year so i'm wondering a few things: how can I get them to replace my Macbook, how can i get them to fix the problem [for free] even if my warranty has run out, if they don't replace it [which i heard they should do] what is my best option [buying a new one is outta the question for financial reasons]

When i try to start my macbook pro 13" (early 2011) I get a black screen and it beeps three times. Based on internet research it appears to be a RAM problem. The closest store is 2 hours away and I don't want to send it away.Â

My Macbook Pro battery had run down (it does quite a bit) so I rebooted with the power inserted.
I get a frozen screen saver which is normal, while the progress bar finds it feet back on power.
However this time, I had the frozen screen saver, and a continuous 3 beeps which I've never had before in a loop? I then re-pressed the power switch on the Macbook and it rebooted fine and seems ok.
This i7 is coming up to its first year (which I think is covered by Apple?) and I *think* this maybe a memory issue? If it is, and my Mac is covered, then by a sheer stroke of luck, I decided to get Apple to fit the 8GB memory at the time of purchase (bad I know! and I don't usually do that) BUT that would mean that Apple fitted the memory upgrade and I haven't touched anything myself.
I then booted up this morning with a full battery and the boot up took a lot longer than normal - maybe around 3 minutes on the spinning logo, and then finally booted - are these all worrying signs?

I am coming from a PC world and I am starting to get frustrated with this problem. I have had my Macbook Pro 15in for about a year. It is an early 2011. For the past two months I have been having the 3 beeps on start up. I have been to the genius bar about 6 times already. They have replaced my RAM twice, replaced my logic board and finally replaced my hard drive. It is STILL doing it. I don't know what else I should do. Please any more suggestions the next time I go to the genius bar?
