PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 Not Booting Up From The Disk

Dec 5, 2008

I'm having a problem with my Powerbook G4. I kind of screwed up my drivers because I was an idiot and tried to get some Intel drivers to work on the computer through some cheat thing and now my computer won't boot up. I have an install disk but when I try to reinstall it keeps saying that I need Mac OSX Install Disk 2. I never had to use disk 2 before and I never had one to begin with.

Software :: Powerbook G4 OS X Not Booting Up - Hard Disk Screen?

May 23, 2009

Here is the situation. I have a 12 in Powerbook G4 with OS X. About a week ago I downloaded a security update and once it was downloaded it asked to either restart or shut down the computer. I clicked restart. It shut down and then turned back on but only got to the Apple symbol with the small grey spinning wheel beneath and wouldn't finish booting up past that. I tried turning it on while holding down the option button and it went to the hard disk screen and clicked the right arrow but it still didn't get past that screen.

PowerPC :: 12" PowerBook G4 Not Booting Properly Unless In Safe Mode After Clean Install

Jun 29, 2009

I recently purchased a sort of beat up 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4, top of the line, and it arrived today. It boots up normally when the apple appears, then it shows the blue screen and then the mouse turns into a spinning wheel. Also, when I move the cursor, a second cursor from the same spot stays in the top-left corner. The PowerBook will only work normally as a headless server (powers on, lid closed), unless booted in safe mode. Another issue is the screen. The seller said there were lines going up and down the screen, but it varies depending on what is displayed on the screen. If the screen is grey or in target-disk mode, they do not appear, but on the 10.5 standard desktop pic, it changes pattern. The lines can be seen here: [URL]

MacBook Pro :: Tri Booting - Disk Error After XP Install

Dec 15, 2009

I'm having issues setting up a Tri-boot system on my Macbook. I can't figure it out at all. I've created the partitions, and began installing XP. After the set up, the machine reboots to finish the install, but I get a 'disk error: press any key to reboot' error after the install. I am not installing though Bootcamp, and I have insured the drive is an NTFS drive, as that is reason the disk error usually appears.

Software :: How To Install Mac OSX On Powerbook G4 Without Administrator Password

Dec 9, 2008

I recently purchased a Powerbook G4 on Ebay and I just received it today. I bought the newest OSX software to put on it but when I put the disc in the computer and click install it says I have to enter an administrator password. I have no idea what the password is! How do I go about reinstalling the OS without the password? I just simply want to clear everything and reset it. I am not a computer technical person and normally on a PC I just put the disc in the computer and restart it and it boots from the disc. I tried doing that with the Mac but it never starts up an installation when I turn the computer on with the disc in it. I looked on another website and someone said to restart it with the disc in and hold the apple button and the C button and the down button. I tried that a couple of times and nothing happened.

Software :: Powerbook G4 That Will Not Recognize The Install Disk?

Apr 19, 2009

I have a situation which seems somewhat unique to what my searches have uncovered. I have a powerbook g4 that will not recognize the install disk it came with. The version is 10.2.7

The Powerbook was working just fine with 10.4.11 when I tried to downgrade Quicktime using Pacifist. I must have done something wrong because the Powerbook turned into a brick. I was able to boot onto my tower G5 and back up all my important data, I then reformatted the drive to mac os journaled and zeroed it. The problem I am having is that when I try to boot from the original install disc I get an error on gray screen that says "You need to restart your computer" Sometimes it doesn't even get this far, it just shows the apple logo and then the screen goes buggy and the machine powers down. What I currently have at my disposal is a G5 tower running 10.4.10, three 10.3 install discs that came with the tower, a burned copy of 10.4, and the Powerbook's original 10.2.7 install disc.

PowerPC :: Install Disk Wont Eject / Cant Turn Powerbook On

Aug 12, 2009

I bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'

The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.

OS X :: Reset Mac Password Without Install Disk

Apr 25, 2009

I was speaking with a friend and he asked me about resetting his mac without the install disk and I told him well you can despite what other people tell you the only major downside is that you'll lose all keychain passwords, but if you've really forgotten your password, it's better than nothing. So I decided I would write a post telling you the simple way to reset your password without the install disk. Trust me this does work! It may take you a few times until you get it right. [URL]

Hold Apple+S when booting to enter single user mode (type every thing exactly the way you see it below in single user mode)
sh/etc/tc
passwd yourusername
reboot
sh/etc/tc

Mac Pro :: Can't Boot From 10.5.6 Install Disk - Ask For Admin Password?

Feb 23, 2009

First timer here. I bought a used G4 MDD 1.25 dual FW800 recently. Was pre-loaded with 10.5.6. I thought that I would add a hard drive. After attempting to format, it rebooted to a gray screen with a MacMonitor icon. If I hit "option", I can get it to progress to a blue screen w/ padlock asking for a password. I only remember setting a user password. I believe this is asking for an admin password.

So, I thought that I'd get the 10.5.6 Install disk to reset the password. I can't seem to boot from the Install disk! I've tried holding down the "c" key at startup, (also the "option" key). No avail.

Intel Mac :: Using Original Install Disk To Reset Password?

May 26, 2012

I have a 2008 iMac running Lion 10.7.2. I am trying to reset my Admin P/W,( I do not remember setting one up in the first place, but trying to use Terminal recently to do Maintenance scripts, it asked for one, which I cannot oblige it with). (I only put in a Master P/W).

The method  I have been reading requires using the original software disk supplied with the Mac. My iMac came with Leopard, whch I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now to Lion.

Will the original Leopard disk be suitable for the above? or do I require the Lion recovery or whatever to do this task.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

PowerPC :: PowerBook G4 No Longer Booting Up?

Mar 28, 2009

I know very very little about computer parts and things like that, but I hope to have provided enough information. When I boot up, both plugged into the power cord, and on battery, the powerbook will reach a white screen with an apple logo in the center. There also is a rotating disk below the apple logo. It will then shortly power down. I made a visit to the genius bar, and they told me something was wrong. I was like DUH!!! They said for $320 it would all be fixed, but I was hoping to be able to find out what was going wrong with it. Sadly I don't have the start-up disk that came with the laptop .

PowerPC :: Booting Powerbook G4 Via External FW 800?

Jul 2, 2010

I am trying to do a clean install of OSX 10.5 on my old powerbook G4 15". I am using a 10.5 image file on my external. I partitioned the external using GUID, and restored the image file onto the external. (this method works when installing on intel macs). Unfortunately, I cannot boot 10.5 using this method on my powerbook. Is it because i am using a firewire 800 cable? Should I be booting it using a firewire 400? I know that PPC macs cannot boot using usb, so i am stumped.

PowerPC :: G4 Screen Changing Color / Not Booting

Dec 24, 2006

Yesterday I installed the latest security updates for my ibook via software update. I'm not sure if this is related to my problem, but I thought I might as well mention it. A few hours after installing the updates, I turned on my computer. Everything was running fine, however as I was listening to music and surfing the internet, my screen turned black. I checked the contrast and it was all the way up. The screen then turned completely off. Upon restarting the computer, my screen got to the loading page with the apple icon and the loading circle, and then turned black and flickered every so often with a screen of vertical multi-colored bars.

I held down the power button to turn the screen off, and the flickering increased, before becoming completely covered by the multi-colored bars and then shutting off. This morning I tried again and my computer actually booted up. However, after a few seconds the screen went black, paused for a few seconds, then went completely red, then green, then blue, then three shades of gray, and finally black again. It repeated this cycle twice before the screen turned itself off. Is this a virus, or hardware/software malfunctioning. I've had my ibook for two years.

PowerPC :: Booting Powerbook G4 - Drive C On Start Up?

Jan 24, 2010

Here's the rundown: my uncle gave me a pristine Powerbook G4 Titanium edition. Good computer, 15.5" screen, definitely worth keeping. He wiped the thing clean before giving it to me. The problem is the internal CD drive is super flaky and won't take an bootable CD well. It took my Tiger bootable once or twice and bonked out during the installation. Now, I can't get anything. BUT, I have a nice external firewire 400 CD/DVD drive. I hit option and can see the disc, but the PB won't take it. Also, of course I hit C on startup to try and load from the CD. Hasn't taken since the first few tries.

PowerPC :: Booting Options On Powerbook G4 - None Of The USB Ports Works?

I've got a Powerbook G4 that has a booting issue. I will hear the startup "dong" a whirl of the drive, then it doesn't go to the grey screen with the Apple. It just sits there with a black screen. If I wait a few hours and try it, sometimes it starts up fine, or sometimes it will sit on the grey screen with the Apple symbol and do nothing. If it does boot correctly, none of the USB ports work. Any ideas on if its worth trying to repair since its 2 and a half years old and I didn't get the Apple Extended Service plan?
