After a power outage my computer was not quite right. When i restarted it there was a plaid like pattern in all shades of gray , black and white. When i put the pointer on it, the desktop came beck at each part I touched. i sort of was painting it back. I shut it down.
i have had a Macbook Pro which I got in mid 2008 and it just yesterday began doing something strange. After working in Mac OS X for a while I saw that many of the white areas on my screen were filled with purple lines. Most of my pics in my background are outlined with varying colors and I cannot figure out what is going on.
I began to suspect the graphics chip at first, so to test this theory I plugged it into an external display and the problem did not exist there so I concluded that it was not due to the graphics chip. I have a friend who performed some tests and believes that it is a problem in the connection between the monitor and the graphics chip and that certain bits of data just aren't making it through. I thought that this was a feasible problem, but to get a second opinion I took it to the local apple store on my university campus and they looked at it and also concluded that it was not a graphics chip problem, but that I may have to replace the whole display assembly. This was fairly expensive and I cannot afford to do that since time got away from me and I forgot to purchase applecare. (How stupid of me. Aargh!) Anyway, so I was wondering what is believed by the macrumors community to be the best option. I discovered that this problem seemed to happen on a lot of this particular model of macbook pro and that apple offered to replace the graphics chip for free because of it, but since they do not think it is a graphics chip issue, it appears that I am stuck.
I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2.16 dual core with a mate screen and now all of the sudden I get this weird pattern. Sometimes it goes and comes back and sometimes it disappears for a month. Is my screen up for a change or is it just something loose.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI own a 17" g5 imac and today I was just browsing on Firefox and all of a sudden the screen became checkered with thin pink and white lines. It is most noticeable on the menu bar and anything that is grey or white in color. It is not checkered on the blue background behind my desktop photo. I have an external monitor plugged in as well and the same thing is happening to that monitor.

Am getting a gray snowflake pattern on display screen (using older Mac pro). Did something fail in computer or is this a hacking job? Right now I'm using another MAC to send this.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhile working on the computer, sometimes the screen will turn gray (from top to bottom) and a message will appear saying the computer must be restarted.So far the local Apple store has not been able to find the problem. The last solution the store tried was to replace the Airport Card, but that didn't work. Computer was purchased in December 2011.

I just tried installing ubuntu via bootcamp. I went through the whole installation process then it asked me to restart. Black Screen for 5min. Manually restarted and my system would only start to another black screen that said GRUB, with no other options. I took the hdd out that I installed ubuntu on and I would get the same problem. Did this somehow change my bios/mac equivalent. Finally was able to get into osx by holding down left mouse button on startup (nothing else would work).

yesterday I received my 24" ACD and really is a work of art, it is beautiful in every aspect. Color balance, hue everything is very well reproduced. Anyways at night I used iklear to clean off some smudges that I had left on the screen due to the install and placing it in the right place on my desk. I used the iklear with the screen off and cleaned it with the microfibre cloth that it comes with and started noticing this pattern that started appearing of horizontally continuous lines. Also with this some very weird smudging appeared and was very hard to get rid of. So after 20 mins or so of polishing with the cloth it came with, they went away but they appear once you apply artificial light from a flash light. I called apple and they of course knew nothing of this, called the apple store genius and I believe some know and some dont. I called iKlear and they have received some calls about this and offered me a different cleaner and they sent it to me at no cost that they say will take the pattern and smudges off. They say it is something or some sort of residue from the paper cover that covers the display in the packaging, and if you look and compare this you will notice it does have the same pattern. I have read on couple of places including the apple support forums where they have experienced this same problem and hope to bring the solution to light here. I have read everywhere from using clear windex to using 70% isopropyl alcohol and I do not want to try this due to the harsh chemicals these contain unless of course this fails.

So far, it's appeared in Chrome, Entourage and Excel 2008. The problem occurred both before an after we upgraded the RAM. View 4 Replies View RelatedFor some reason for the last day or 2, my imac screen will be filled with a shaded transparent screen with a message saying something along the lines that i must restart my computer. my system is the Mac OS X leopard 10.5.8.
It will happen at random times, sometimes it will take an hour, sometimes couple of minutes. Most times it happenes right when i click on say a file or a link or anything. But still happens when nothing is clicked or anything.
Using the ati flashing tool I flashed the XFX 4870 1GB ZFWC. When I start up a dialog shows up saying the cables are not connected, when in fact they are (I have double and triple checked). Also when I put the computer to sleep then wake it up a weird distorted blocky pattern appears and I have to restart the computer to fix the problem.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThis is my first mac notebook and i'm pretty puzzled on whats going on. First night with my new macbook air 13".. installed basic apps and parallels for a windows vm. I was having issues connecting to my NAS so i rebooted.. appeared to be taking forever to reboot so i closed the lid. An hour later opening the lid.. no response.. power button.. no response.. any ideas what's going on? Is there a way to hard reset it? I tried it on power and on battery with no luck..
edit: of course.. as I post this.. i try once again to press the power button.. it powers up fine.. still curious if this is a common issue..
I was watching tv the other day when my macbook was in sleep mode plugged in to the charging cord and all of a sudden it restarted. I'm running OSX and XP but it was booted in OS X. Any ideas as to why this would happen?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter some partition troubles I popped in my snow leopard disc and erased my HD. I then made a windows partition. Then, I tried to restore from a time machine back up I had. It finished restoring and said to restart, so I did. It doesn't get past the apple sign though. After the grey screen with and apple logo sit their for a few seconds it kernal panics. I can't get any farther than that. Should I re-restore or what?

I am using Onyx for cleaning disk permissions as well as flushing the cache and other maintenance because I heard great things about it. The most recent time that I used it I Restarted my macbook and the mouse was frozen and I couldn't move it, even after like 5 minutes. So I did a hard restart and everything started up just fine.

When we open up the computer it shows the desktop then goes dark and nothing but a restart will bring everything back. I have checked our settings and it is not related to them. Also, it doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes. I can't find a reason for it.
Both are new and both run Lion's latest updates.
A few days ago it started with an error message after I logged in, but before the desktop appeard. Error message was about "your computer was restarted due to an error..." But in effect, it didn't restart. The message just appeard. After some investigations in the net, I thought this might be an issue with Kernel Panic. I run some HDD diagnostics and repaired the HDD out of the utility.
I canceled the support call I had logged that time. The MacBook ran well now 5 days, but today it restarted automatically (first time) and I got the error message back. Unfortunately, I don't get the window after it started-up, where I can get a report, so I can't post anything else besides my configuration.

The past couple days I have been using my Macbook and all of the sudden out of nowhere the message that pops up when you press the power button on your macbook while in OSX would pop up out of nowhere. It would just come up out of nowhere without me pressing anything. My Macbook could just be sitting there and it would pop up.
Fast forward to today and I used software update to upgrade the firmware. After I restarted the computer my Macbook would not even turn on. No lights, no chimes, no nothing. I don't even get a light on my magsafe power adapter when I plug it into my Macbook anymore.I tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, reseating the RAM, and turning it on without the battery in and it still won't turn on.What else can I do? My warranty period JUST expired so I don't want to shell out $500+ to get this thing fixed. Could my logic board be dead?
I'm on a macbook pro, just installed windows SP2 and I ran out of battery about half way through the installation, So I restarted after charging a little, and My monitor did not even turn on, I was left with a inactive monitor, also My keyboard did not respond at all.I presume these problems are caused by the XP not sharing the hardware, however; I cannot eject the CD with XP on in order to put my Leopard install disk in (to reset) because the keyboard won't work, Also it is a university laptop and I don't have the install disks!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using explorer through parallels when the whole system froze and allowed me to do nothing. Having tried to close all the app's down and also a force quit I was unable to get anything to happen. I left it running over night thinking it would calm down and that maybe it was having a moment, but in the morning nothing. I turned it off and when I restarted it is frozen in Finder.
I have Option-Command-Escaped'd and it brings up Force Quit Application and Finder is highlighted with the Relaunch button highlighted and although the mouse is inaffective, pressing the enter key causes the screen to empty for a moment and then come back up with the Force Quit Application box. Its running OS X.
