PowerPC :: Power Consumption Of DVD Drive
Nov 6, 2008I have a pioneer 111d drive that is in a external enclosure,that I don't use anymore. I would like to put it in my mac pro. How much current do the drives draw when in idle or stand by mode. The only reason I ask. Is because, I have no need for a mac pro with two drives, as of now. I would be adding the second drive just because I can. I would pass on this if I new it was just sitting their wasting energy.

Nov 19, 2009I'm considering to buy a new iMac (21,5"/nvidia or ati) and I'm wondering if someone has already measured the actual power consumption. In it's environmental paper, Apple documents that it uses less than 2W in sleep mode and 37,5 W with the display off. Did anyone try if this is also measured in real life? I may sound a bit paranoid, but half a year ago I bought a mac mini 2007 at a stock clearance, and I was shocked to find out that just the powerblock plugged in already consumes 8W, the mini itself in standby consumes 11W. Add to that a screen, external speakers and an external disk and the total standby power consumption of the lot is 25W. Terrible.
Besides the energy consumption, I'm also a bit disappointed with the speed of the mini, but that's probably largely due to the low RAM (1GB). So rather than going for the latest mini model, I'd like to go for the power of an iMac. But I would be really happy if someone could confirm the power consumption. Specifically I'm looking for power consumption
- In sleep mode
- While streaming itunes to an airport express, with the display off
(I assume the display goes to sleep automatically when streaming. Right?)
- While in normal, not too heavy operation (eg surfing, mailing & itunes)
Mac Pro :: IStat Menus And Mac Pro (no Power Consumption Displayed)?
Nov 22, 2009so this is the issue. I've always used istat menus to monitor my computer usage i.e. RAM, CPU, Fans, power, etc. With my old 2008 Mac Pro istat used to display how much power it was using however with my 2009 Mac Pro it doesn't. It displays 0 Watts throughout. Any ideas on how to solve this. I'm really curious with regard to how much power this system uses.

Feb 4, 2010Using the ati flashing tool I flashed the XFX 4870 1GB ZFWC. When I start up a dialog shows up saying the cables are not connected, when in fact they are (I have double and triple checked). Also when I put the computer to sleep then wake it up a weird distorted blocky pattern appears and I have to restart the computer to fix the problem.

Aug 5, 2010So I just got hold of a few of these new battery chargers from Apple and I'm just wondering if these are meant to stay plugged in the wall, even after the green light goes off. Does the light going off mean that the batteries will no longer draw power from the power outlet and that it is safe to assume power will continue to be consumed? Or is it preferred that I plug and unplug the charger only when needed to avoid any, unnecessary, extra power consumption?

Oct 24, 2010I just found this environmental report for the 27" iMac's on Apple's web site, which lists the amount of power they use when off/asleep/idle.
There doesn't seem to be a similar document for the Late 2006 iMac's. I'm just wondering if anybody knows the power consumption stats for the older iMac's (the 20" model in particular) - I'm interested to now how the newer models compare as I'll be buying one soon.

All the editing is going to be done in the mpeg4 format and once the video has been edited I am going to encode the video into H.264. My question is which will be better A Power Mac Dual 1.8Ghz G5 or a Mac Mini Core 2 Duo?
I am looking for stable set up that can handle encoding video for a few hours at a time. I am leaning towards the Power Mac Dual G5 because of how much more cooling it has however that said a Mac Mini with a Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 Ghz would also probabley work well.

Mac Pro :: 8-core Power Supply Making Noise Like Refrigerator Radiator?
Nov 23, 2009This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.
Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.
The power supply fan speed was running at 599rpm yesterday, but is running at 629rpm today.
I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.
What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?
MacBook Pro :: Differences Between Core 2 Duo / Core I5 And Core I7?
Dec 4, 2010I see the numbers of everything from Core 2 Duo, to the slightly faster and cooler Core i3, to the supposedly faster core i5s and i7s. The benchmarks go up accordingly, but I found this does not always equate in a faster experience on most tasks.
Here's my experience so far on processor upgrade:
In one computer trade school re-certification class I am in, we are working with Windows Server 2003 on a Quad Xeon platform and it's incredibly slow.
But in a previous class we had the previous generation server edition on older Xeons, and while not fast, it was much better. On paper the newer multi-core Xeons should have made a difference, but could 2003 server software be that much more bloated than the previous Windows server edition that it would stall like that and make us wish we had the older setup?
I am going to try out the Adobe CS lab and put the new high end Dells to the test there and see if they work better than when we had an older CS version on older Xeon equipped Dells.
I don't know if this is something to do with Dell, or if Apple's increasing processor bumps/generations are going to similarly not make a difference in the speed things appear to go at, whether it's Adobe stuff, server stuff, or anything else that needs power.
I know somebody who plans on a Core 2 Duo, i5 or i7 MBP and I was wondering if the higher end processor is worth it in that case (iMovie being the main program of use).

Hardware :: Pattern Appeared In Horizontally Lines?
Oct 14, 2009yesterday I received my 24" ACD and really is a work of art, it is beautiful in every aspect. Color balance, hue everything is very well reproduced. Anyways at night I used iklear to clean off some smudges that I had left on the screen due to the install and placing it in the right place on my desk. I used the iklear with the screen off and cleaned it with the microfibre cloth that it comes with and started noticing this pattern that started appearing of horizontally continuous lines. Also with this some very weird smudging appeared and was very hard to get rid of. So after 20 mins or so of polishing with the cloth it came with, they went away but they appear once you apply artificial light from a flash light. I called apple and they of course knew nothing of this, called the apple store genius and I believe some know and some dont. I called iKlear and they have received some calls about this and offered me a different cleaner and they sent it to me at no cost that they say will take the pattern and smudges off. They say it is something or some sort of residue from the paper cover that covers the display in the packaging, and if you look and compare this you will notice it does have the same pattern. I have read on couple of places including the apple support forums where they have experienced this same problem and hope to bring the solution to light here. I have read everywhere from using clear windex to using 70% isopropyl alcohol and I do not want to try this due to the harsh chemicals these contain unless of course this fails.

May 3, 2010i have had a Macbook Pro which I got in mid 2008 and it just yesterday began doing something strange. After working in Mac OS X for a while I saw that many of the white areas on my screen were filled with purple lines. Most of my pics in my background are outlined with varying colors and I cannot figure out what is going on.
I began to suspect the graphics chip at first, so to test this theory I plugged it into an external display and the problem did not exist there so I concluded that it was not due to the graphics chip. I have a friend who performed some tests and believes that it is a problem in the connection between the monitor and the graphics chip and that certain bits of data just aren't making it through. I thought that this was a feasible problem, but to get a second opinion I took it to the local apple store on my university campus and they looked at it and also concluded that it was not a graphics chip problem, but that I may have to replace the whole display assembly. This was fairly expensive and I cannot afford to do that since time got away from me and I forgot to purchase applecare. (How stupid of me. Aargh!) Anyway, so I was wondering what is believed by the macrumors community to be the best option. I discovered that this problem seemed to happen on a lot of this particular model of macbook pro and that apple offered to replace the graphics chip for free because of it, but since they do not think it is a graphics chip issue, it appears that I am stuck.
