I have been having problems with uploads from my computer: is there a program that will help me monitor traffic and also pinpoint where all my traffic is going?
View 1 RepliesI have a 20inch imac (bought in summer 2007). I am just getting into using it as my primary computer. I was playing around in order to learn more and I found something through Activity Monitor that does not make sense to me.
In the Network Activity tab, I see "Data received:" and "Data sent:" sections. As I browse the web, these numbers change of course, but it seems that the Data received quickly reaches hundreds of megabytes! Right now, Data received: is 540MB and Data sent: is 280MB (after a reboot earlier in the day). I am not using the iMac as a server or anything and I have never seen a Windows PC sending out so many packets in the course of browsing the web. Is this in line with others' experience? Should I be concerned about a spyware program on my iMac?
I'm planning to connect an external hard disk to an AEBS and open the right ports to allow Internet access. I plan on distributing the HDs IP address and password among some friends for a collaborative project. Is there any way for me to monitor the inbound/outbound traffic of such a situation? Perhaps even log which IP addresses do what, so I have a history of each user's actions? This sounds like something akin to an incredibly stripped down version of the Admin Tool suite available on OS X Server.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.
I want to have access to certain cooking videos without needing to access the internet. Is there a good OSX program that can do this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an older MBP (2.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD) and am having problems with PDF files. Well, I guess it would be better described as annoyances with PDF files. I use Adobe Reader and the lag when scrolling is unbearable. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? Can anyone suggest alternate programs that may remedy my problem.

The thing is I am currently using widgets in my Dashboard (iStat Pro and Temperature Monitor) that monitors system temps, but the problem is it tells me the temperature of what my MBP is at that moment. I found this program called Tidy UP! and it appears to be very good. But before I go through and starting massive deletions, I wanted some feedback as to what programs people use to find and delete their oldest duplicate files.
I was on a Plane organizing my files and evidently never sync'd back up fully from the hotel before getting back home and using my iMac. So now I have a big mess to clean up.
If someone installs a spy-program locally on a computer, how would you go about finding it and/or rectifying the situation? A friend has reason to believe that someone installed software on their OS X computer to gather information. They may or may not have had the password, and she thinks they got on locally. How would she go about finding any such programs installed? She is reluctant to to a clean install (the only suggestion that I could think of).

What my questions is if I get an email from someone and then I forward it to someone now I have a duplicate one in my inbox and another in my sent. If I delete the one in my sent then when I open it the attachment will not show. Is there a way for it to just store the file once and then create an alias pointing to the main file.
Another example: If I attach a photo from iPhoto to an email there again is another duplicate. I would much rather Mail send the photo and create an alias to the original photo in iPhoto thus creating no duplicates.
I hope that was not confusing.

I have a bunch of music on my computer that isn't properly named, like for instance:
Flo Rida - Right Round is named: right round flo rida.
This is cause I didn't care before and now I do. I also have a lot of videos on my computer, mostly personal, that I'd like to rename. I tried doing it one by one (hitting enter/return key, then changing the name) but it's taking to long.

I recently bought an iMac and I have noticed within the past week that I have had to force the mail program to shut down. Otherwise if I don't force the mail program to shut down the OS will not let me put the iMac to sleep or to shut down.

I have found many programs such as MrClean that find duplicates of songs but I do not want to accidentally delete the high quality mp3's or flac files. Is there any program that can do this for me? View 3 Replies View RelatedFor some unknown reason my mail program is just now asking for a password when I attempt to send an email. I verified the password with my ISP. When I go to the Mail program/Preferences/Accounts I see a screen that has three sections. The third section offers "Outgoing mail server (SMTP)" but offers no box allowing a server number such as 587... Why is that option missing? What is likely causing this sudden request for a password?
