Jun 27, 2009I have a 22" Dell external monitor on my MBP. I know that I just close the cover to my MBP to shut off the screen. What do I do in those instances that I want to use both screens? There has to be something simpler than restarting the MBP?

Apr 6, 2012I use an external monitor from Dell with my Macbook Pro 13.3". For some reason I am not allowed to set this monitor at highest possible resolution? Or perhaps that's the best for this monitor which admittedly is quite old. But when I go into my system preferences it shows option for higher resolutions but doesn't allow me to select one.

Feb 27, 2009I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 Core Duo, and I'm wanting to install 10.6, but about a year ago, I cracked my screen to the point that I cannot make anything out on it, and haven't replaced it. Instead, I have just been using it in clamshell mode, which has worked out fine so far. My problem is that I cannot get the 10.6 install to show up on my external monitor.
I searched around, and could only find one other similar thread that just ended with the author putting it in clamshell and having it work fine. When I boot to the install and close the screen, I just get a grey box on my external display with a black bar on either side of it. I can't seem to find any other resources, so I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jun 27, 2014I have a Samsung SB970 S27B970D 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor with native resolution of 2560x1440. When I connect it to my 2012 13" MacBook Pro via mini display port to DVI, I am unable to get anything better than 1080p.
Here's what System Information shows for my displays. As you can see, 2560 should be supported.
Also note that we have two different MBPs and two different Samsung monitors (same model, ordered at different times) that do the same thing.

Jan 12, 2010When I got my 26" monitor the other day it worked right out of the box plugging into my 13" Macbook Pro. I am slaving it off the macbook w/o using the LED screen on the MBP. Just the external.
Yesterday I was trying to improve the image quality and changed the frequency (common bad decision) and am getting the common "out of range" message.
Now if I run the external WITH the 13" LED of the MBP it is fine as it's using a different profile/preferences to set the right frequency.
I have deleted the pref file that everyone on the net says to do with no luck
I have reset the PRAM and VRAM as suggested with no help.
Is there another location for the preferences related to this in Snow Leopard as most help I am finding is a year old to several years old. The pref to delete in old posts just doesn't do the trick.
Again the monitor works fine when used in conjunction with the screen on the MBP but is out of range when running solo with the MBP lid closed.
Hardware :: Won't Work With External Monitor Choices
Oct 12, 2010I bought my 13"MBP about 2-3 months ago. I mainly use it for uni so It's back and forth (great portability). But I am looking into getting a monitor for my setup at home. I have the hdmi adapter + HDMI cable which I use to connect to my tv in the living room. (52" Bravia). I am looking to spend about $150-$200 no more then that. Apple monitors are out of my price range.
I also have a few questions.
- Is it better to get a monitor with HDMI?
- Is vga/dvi good? How is it for those who have it?
- Is there much difference between 1600 x 900 and 1920 x 1080?
- Will my MBP look fine on any of these monitors?

IMac :: Won't Work With I7 27" / Using As External Monitor
Aug 16, 2010I bought the mini-display port to dual link dvi adaptor for $99. However, it doesn't work from going from my pc to the imac or from my macbook pro to the imac. I find it retarded that they wouldn't even sell a working adapter.
Has anyone gotten this to work or does anyone know which adapter I can buy to get this going?

The TV is showing it recognises when the HDMI cable is connected to the macbook (on the screen the input menu shows live connections) or not through HDMI cable and mini-DVI to HDMI connector but the macbook does not recognise any external monitor. In display preferences there is no arrangement tab either and no resolution greater than 1280 x 800. Of course the TV has full 1080p resolution.

Oct 16, 2008I picked up a new MacBook yesterday and I noticed a weird issue when coming out of "monitor sleep" mode, not regular sleep mode.
When I move the mouse, the external monitor shows what you see in the picture, kinda like a TV with no signal. The MacBook screen works fine so what I just do is unplug and re-plug in the DVI plug and everything is good again.
My 24 inch Dell monitor worked fine with my M1330 and other computers so I know it's not that. Does anyone have the same issue or maybe give me some light on this?

Aug 5, 2009As said, my current set up is an HDMI - DVI cable (HDMI to monitor and DVI to adapter) and my DVI - mini DisplayPort adapter, everything is connected fine but when I turn on the monitor, it says cable not found... and nothing is displayed on the screen but on the Macbook side of things, it sees the monitor is connected (I can extend the screen and leave the screen) but other than that, it appears I cannot get an image on the monitor, pressing every button on the monitor does not work either.
Any other information that may seem necessary, let me know. I tried clearing my PRAM and clearing the power and such but nothing seems to work.
IMac :: External Monitor - Bad Mouse Tracking When External Monitor Off?
Jan 9, 2010I have a 27" i7. I have a 24" DVI Montior hooked up to it via MDP->DVI adaptor. When the 24" Monitor is on, everything is fine. When I turn the monitor off, the magic mouse tracking on the 27" screen stutters. I am not kidding - it took me ages to figure out that to fix I either need to turn the other monitor on OR disconnect the MDP->DVI adaptor.

Feb 9, 2010I need advice on purchasing an external drive for back up purposes. I just got a 15" MBP 2.8 500GB after getting some great advice from the group. I currently have a WD My Book Studio 1TB, which I purchased after a WD drive appeared to loose my information. In addition, I had a lacie drive that died several years ago, so I am not so confident in the external drives, so I want a secondary drive for the extra security. I went to purchase the same WD drive I got a few months ago, but learned that it no longer is sold because the drives have been updated, and not for the better.
Ideally I would love to get a small drive that is 1TB that I can keep in a safe box, in case of the unexpected. I haven't been able to find any smaller portable drives that are 1TB and the 1 WD I found seems to be a no no. Something stable and reliable would be great. I am planning to begin using TM for backups.
IMac :: Unable To Work With WD External Hard Drive
Feb 16, 2010I'm praying someone can give me a miracle cure here but im pretty sure its a terminal case. i have a 24inch iMac 2.66ghz core 2 duo and a western digital 1tb external usb hard drive....this hard drive was bought a month or so ago with the sole purpose of store years and years of media to free up valuable space on my iMac hard drive....tonight without any warning at all the drive icon disappears from my desktop with an error message and now refuses to load, when i click initialise on the error dialogue box it takes me to disk utility.
in disk utility i have tried repairing disk and i get the message "invalid node structure". it then tells me it cannot be repaired and i need to re-format my hard drive.
as i said there is literally YEARS of info on this drive that i really really dont want to lose, is there anything i can do, or anything worth trying. as a side note on the front of the drive it has a capacity gauge and has gone from 3/4's full to not showing anything.

Jul 2, 2010I recently went from a 24" iMac to a 13" MBP and I'm trying to figure out how to get windows to automatically resize when dragging them from my 24" external monitor to my MBP. Currently I can drag a window and it will resize vertically but not horizontally. Also, if I have my external monitor connected and have iTunes on it(or safari, mail, iCal, etc.) and then I close iTunes and unplug my external monitor and then reopen itunes at a later time it is waaay to big for my MBP's screen and I cant adjust the size since the corners are way off the screen. I literally have to wait tell I can plug my external monitor back in and resize iTunes to make it small enough to fit on my MBP.

Jan 31, 2010I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.
Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?
OS X :: Monitor Suddenly Goes Completely White / External Monitor Goes Black
Jul 30, 2005I have been using the latest macbook pro 13.3" since April 2010. Over the last week the monitor suddenly goes completely white and the external monitor goes black. The laptop becomes unresponsive although the programmes opened continue running (e.g a skype voice call would continue without interruption although the monitor is all white).
The only solution at the moment is to press the turn off button for a few seconds then switch the laptop on again. It will then work normally until for no apparent reason this happens again.
