Jun 3, 2014 I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

But i wanted to also give them read only access to another folder on another drive. So ive set the permissions for the drive, folder and enclosing folder, but it still doesnt appear when they mount my share.

Nov 27, 2008I am using my time capsule also as external hard drive. Recently i copied a series of files from my powerbook to the time capsule and tried to open them directly from the remote drive. It told me that access was denied (Permission denied). I checked the info and it said that I have "custom access". 3 Users groups were present, one (unknown), another group called staff, and a group called everyone; all with read and write priveleges. Only I wasn't present. When I dragged the file to the desktop, the unknown user disappeared and (Me) appeared. I could open the file normally from the desktop.

Now that she can read and get on the computer on her own, can someone give me a few quick pointers on making my computer a little more safe for her. Meaning: are there parental controls in snow leopard or safari that would block adult websites. I don't even know if they rate sites like tv shows and if its even possible to block any part of the internet.

Jun 10, 2008I recently ran Disk Utility on my MacBook (OS 10.4.11), and it said the node structure was invalid. The next day, I repaired the disk with DiskWarrior (I didn't have an OS X disk around, so I couldn't use Disk Utility).
However! Before I tried using DiskWarrior, I repaired permissions in Disk Utility, figuring that it was good routine maintenance. Disk Utility changed some permissions, and ever since, the Finder immediately quits and restarts when I navigate to certain folders. The "bad folders" seem to vary with no apparent cause: for a while it only cared about a certain folder inside my home folder, but now it's started to quit whenever I navigate to my home folder (which means I can't use Command-N, though I can make new windows by clicking on the hard drive's desktop icon). Occasionally it lets me go to my home folder for no apparent reason, and sometimes I can get to otherwise "bad" folders by clicking on my shortcuts on the leftmost panel of the finder window (though not always). In short, it's not very consistent, and changes over time. It's still doing this even after repairing the disk, zapping PRAM, and trying fsck (which said the disk was OK). Both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior think my permissions are fine.

Mar 14, 2009I am using an Intel based imac 2.8GHz, has 4GB memory, OS 10.5.6. It has 16GB Hard disk free.
After finder has been up for 20 seconds or so the response time between clicks gets really slow (1 or 2 minutes). The problem repeats every time Finder is restarted. When I look at the Activity monitor the Finder shows that it is taking up 840MB of RAM and most of the CPU.
Software :: Cannot Open ITunes Or Finder - No Written Permissions
May 1, 2010When ever I click on the itunes or finder icons, I get this error message: "The itunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have written permission for this file". I read somewhere that for itunes it may have gotten stuck as a read only file and you can fix this by going to my documents --> music --> itunes --> properties --> unselect "read only". But when I click on "my documents" it tells me that I have to open it with "finder", and "finder" gives me the same error message as itunes.

May 4, 2012I have a relatively new MacBook Air. In reviewing the sharing and permissions settings for the Macintosh HD and for user known as "everyone", I changed the setting from "ready only" to "no access" thinking that this would block access from other users (like other family members). Well, it did, but I'm part of "everyone" and now have no access to my Air. Â
I have tried rebooting and accessing Safe Mode (Command/Shift/V) and I can see the status information as the machine tries to lauch in Safe Mode, but then the screen turns white leaving me with no interface through which I can launch Finder and correct my stupid mistake.Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing And Permissions In Finder - No Privileges Info
Jun 14, 2012I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4. I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my computer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info.
However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user). This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
"Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user."
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.

OS X :: Setting Desktop Backgrounds - Browse Files Within Finder
Jul 15, 2009I have only been a Mac user for about six months now but there is a problem I can't figure out (maybe it can't be done). Is there anyway when you are browsing files within Finder (or viewing a picture in Preview) that you can select a photo and have it immediately become your desktop background. I know in Windows I was always able to do this by just right clicking on the file and set background was an option. The only way I've found to set the background on my Mac is to right click on the desktop and then choose the "Change the Desktop Background" option and do it there. I can also do it within iPhoto or Picasa. But quite often I'm just browsing through my files in Finder and I run across a picture I'd like to use for my background. Surely if you can do it in Windows you can do it somehow in Mac OS.

May 7, 2009I'll have to provide some background info so you know what's going on. I'm setting up a preconfigured .conf for Viscosity (OpenVPN). What my sh script does is copies all the pertinent files to the correct folders and runs sed to customize it for the particular user. Normally you'd just chmod +x it to make it executable..in this situation EVERYTHING needs to be rolled up into one click as this will be distributed to 'uninformed' users and needs to be foolproof. I've tried "sh->app" rollers such as platypus and they suck and only run half of my script at best. So experts, I Ask, how does one make a self-contained, executable .sh script that can be distributed and executed on multiple computers without ANY user intervention beyond "download this and double click it"

Oct 31, 2010i accidentally set permissions in the Mac HD Info window for Everyone to "No Access". of course it locked up. i have an external drive plugged in running Time Machine. i understand i can use that to restore...?
I ran disk utility - it failed because it could not locate the clip art folder in word (?wha?) repair disk permissions ran for 24 hours and couldn't complete. anyway - I know there is an easy solution here - i just want to be sure i'm doing it correctly so i dont make it worse than it already is...would some kind soul please provide me step-by-step instructions to either use Time Machine to repair - or something.

OS X :: Repair Permissions Isn't Repairing Permissions

When running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, it reports that there are errors and that it's fixed them but if I run it again, the same errors keep appearing.
I've noticed that the current permissions on the errors are lrw-rw-rw- which I assume means that they are symbolic links and not the actual files which Disk Utility is expecting. Any idea what's going on?
