My MacBook crashed end of last year after an automatic OS upgrade. Unfornately I could not my original Mac OS install DVD (Tiger 10.4). Then I searched for a Mac OS Install DVD torrent from ThePirateBay and downloaded a 'Mac OS X Install DVD.toast' file. But it still can't reboot the computer. I would like to know where to get the right OS and reinstall the system ?

After 10.7.4, the computer indicated I had to reboot. after the reboot, I hear the chimes, then only a gray screen. Nothing else. Tried safe mode by holding down shift key after chimes, but problem persists.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a mid 07 iMac that I just upgraded the memory in and now it wont reboot. I had two 1 gig and switched to two 2 gigs. I can replace one of the 2 gigs with one of the original 1 gigs and it will start and shows in "about this mac" that I have 3 gigs??? Then take the 1 gig back out replace with the other new 2 gig and wont reboot again. Â

I own a 15 inch mid-2010 macbook pro and have Windows installed via bootcamp. Because of this, I often shut down and reboot the computer into the other partition. I would say I switch between Windows and Mac OS X about six times a day.
Since I reboot often, I was just wondering if doing this does any damage to the hard drive or other hardware.
I am upgrading my RAM from 512 MB to the Max limit 2 GB. After I add the two 1GB RAMs and put the MacbookPro back together will I have to do some kind of reboot restore, or something like a hard drive backup restore, before it will all work? Or do you just replace the RAM cards and start it up and it works fine?

I woke my MBP from sleep as I went to do something on it and I found a checkerboard-like (or interlacing) pattern displayed across the screen. That is, I could see bits and pieces of Firefox, the desktop, the dock, etc. in little rectangles across the screen with the bits and pieces scattered all over the place (like puzzle pieces strewn everywhere). I wasn't entirely surprised as I had seen a friend of mine have a similar problem when waking his MBP from sleep. I didn't have time to deal with a restart, so I went to my gf's Windoze machine (perhaps what follows is my MBP taking revenge for going off when times got tough and cheating on it with a *gasp* PC!!???). when I returned to my machine later on, it sounded like it was rebooting itself as I walked in the room. Then about 15-20 seconds later, it did the same thing. When I opened it up, the same checkerboard pattern appeared as it started to reboot, then it went to a completely blue screen, and finally went black (as in turned-off black). After that, it started this same process over again and stayed stuck in that loop until I held down the power button to turn it completely off. I called Apple (still under 90-day Apple Care since I got the machine in April) and did all of the troubleshooting tasks that they talked me through. It is apparently a hardware issue, as I feared, and I will have to send it off to have it repaired. (At least is sending the pre-paid box for me to ship it to them).

Will Diskwarrior help me with this or is it a lost cause?
All my music and photo files are fine, it is just everything that was on the desktop, which was a lot.
I have googled for the past couple of hours but can't find exactly what I am after. I have a macbook and I have leopard os x 10.5.2. I don't remember the last time I did a os x update (or if I ever have). But I was getting updates to download the newer version of itunes and safari (I was having trouble accessing some sites, and itunes won't let me visit the store because of safari or something.) So I've run the system update and it says it is going to install 10.5.8, and the new version of itunes. It downloads fine and then asks me to restart. I click restart and the computer goes to the reboot type screen and a box pops up saying "Software update" and underneath it says 'Configuring Installation'. The little blue bar loads a smidge and then it sits in the one spot and doesn't move at all. I have tried this in the past and I had left the laptop for hours and came back and it hadn't moved at all. So I force quit to get back into my computer. Now I have no idea what to do? Do I download 10.5.8 directly from the apple website? Or do I have to download 10.5.3, then 10.5.4 etc.

I have an early-2012 13" i7 Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.3. In the past couple of days, I have noticed that the computer stalls on the grey Apple screen with the spinning wheel after a soft shut down/reboot. If I do a hard restart while it has stalled like this, it then proceeds to boot up normally.

I am trying to install Ubuntu on Mac and for that I've created a bootable USB drive with Ubuntu on it. Now when I'm restarting my Mac and pressing Option key on keyboard, it is not giving me any option to boot from USB. I don't think its getting detcted even. USB is currently formatted in FAT format. Just wondering if there is any other format required?

Just placed a new harddrive in my macbook pro and had the geeks at the Genius bar to install the OS system. Now I'm dealing with a clicking noise and a grey screen with a question mark on it. Tried to place the install dvd in and boot from the it won't. I did notice after going to the Disk utility that my hardrrive isn't recognized.

My USB ethernet is "unplugged" (according to System Preferences/Network) after it's been plugged out and plugged in an USB port. The actual network connection doesn't work either. The machine needs a reboot to have the adapter connected. USB probing lists the adapter as expected after re-plugging.

I'm having a problem where my Macbook Pro keeps resetting back to the default 'space' wallpaper everytime it boots up. When I go into the settings and click on 'Desktop & Screensaver', it changes back to the wallpaper I originally set before shutting the Macbook down, without me clicking anything else.Â
I've read in several places that a file needs to be deleted, something like (top of my head) 'com.apple.desktop.---' in the library folder. However, that file doesn't exist or at least I can't locate it.

My Mac is not starting and is asking me to reboot from the time machine however it is showing me that the latest complete backup is form September. Should I reboot from there and once I am in I will be able to rescue latest backups or should I re-install the OS? If I re-install the OS will I loose everything or will things still be there, including folders that were loose in the desktop as opposed to being inside the hard drive?

I got out the shower n pressed the pause button to stop the music. While that i notice couple of spot of water around my return button just a little. Nothing happened to the computer after using it for about 1 hours. So i left and came home around 7 hours later, got on the macbook air n then it kept prompting the shutdown menu option screen. From there it would just go to constant reboot. Is this due to water damage at all? or is it just a coincidence. Because my black macbook has had way more water on it before n its perfectly fine.

I'm out of warranty so Apples no use here. I'm pretty sure the HDD is gone as I've put in the reboot disk and the HDD doesn't appear in startup disk. Recently my 13 inch MBP has been freezing a lot. It seems similar to the 1.7 firmware problem many are reporting, but from what I can tell from their posts the freezing only lasts 15-30 seconds then they can work again. On my computer the freezing does not stop and I am forced to hold the power button to shutdown every time. When I attempt to reboot the computer after that I have to reset the PRAM every time.
I am using a 3rd party hard drive that worked fine up until a little less than a week ago, and also worked fine in my old plastic white macbook. When I put the stock hard drive back in it seems to work fine, but I admittedly haven't used it as extensively and not all of my apps are installed, but most of my freezing occurs in safari as well sometimes itunes.If anyone knows how to downgrade firmware back to 1.6 I would try that as well, but I am not sure if that is possible.
I just got this Refurb MacBook Pro 15in. 2.66Ghz 32GB HDD and 512MB NVIDIA GFX. And my computer went into sleep mode and when I plugged it back in I had to do a manual reboot because the mouse wouldn't move.. So, I turned it back on let it die to see if it would happen again, and then the computer didn't even go to sleep mode.. What is going on? What should I do?

But instead the menu of recovery appears, a lock screen whith a password ask appears. I try all passwords that i use or used too unlock my Mac, but nothing work.

I admit that the question is not really clear. But here is the list of events:Â
1) Nov 2010: my MacBook Pro 13-inch on OS 10.6.8 from mid-2010 (2.66GHz core2 duo with 8G RAM) did not wake up from sleep when clamshell was opened. I called Apple Care and did SMC reset and the matter seemed to be resolved.Â
2) Jan 03 2012: Same issue happened. Same call to Apple and same SMC reset. Matter seemed resolved.Â
3) April 10 2012: Same issue happened. Apple Care recommented OS reinstallation.Â
4) April 12 2012: Performed Mac OS 10.6 reinstallation using the factory disc. No hiccups during installation. Performed software update afterwards (update package 10.6.8 combo v1.1) . No problems detected. Performed permission repair (disk utility). Then rebooted the computer. Here is the problem: Upon rebooting the computer, the sound volume setting was on low (1/4 of the max). I switched it to max. I rebooted the computer to reset PRAM.
Upon reboot, the sound volume was still on low (1/4 of max). I called Apple care, deleted the 2 plist files in library/preferences/audio, switched the volume to maximum and then rebooted the mac. Upon reboot, the sound volume remained on low setting (1/4 of max).Â
5) I did another OS reinstallation and software update. Same thing all over.Â

I emptied my cache on Safari and my computer stayed frozen for a few minutes. I decided to re-boot, but every time I do so, it goes from the gray Apple screen to a blue screen and stops right there. I don't get the spinning wheel, but rather the black arrow that I can move about the blue screen, but nothing else.
Here's what I've tried with no success.
1. Re-booting via Safe Mode (Command-Shift). Instead of freezing on the blue screen, it asks for my password and after a few seconds it stops on the Snow Leopard Pink/Black Stars background. Same result, only the background is different
2. Resetting PRAM - No luck
3. Re-booting with the Snow Leopard DVD and using Disk Utility. I follow the necessary steps online. No luck
After a kernel panic, the MacBook pro shuts off during a reboot, even a safe reboot
