MacBook Pro :: No Sleep Mode After Manual Reboot
Aug 18, 2009
I just got this Refurb MacBook Pro 15in. 2.66Ghz 32GB HDD and 512MB NVIDIA GFX. And my computer went into sleep mode and when I plugged it back in I had to do a manual reboot because the mouse wouldn't move.. So, I turned it back on let it die to see if it would happen again, and then the computer didn't even go to sleep mode.. What is going on? What should I do?

my mbp i7's double tap doesn't save when i set it to a certain "double-click speed" so when i put my mbp to sleep or restart it, i'm forced to go back to the settings and set my double-click speed again. The point of me doing this is because for some reason, my double-click doesnt register or hi-light the text in the URL or text in essays etc. when its set up to the fourth notch on the slide bar. so i have to put it down to 0 on the bar in order for my double tap to register. Its really annoying to have to redo this every time i come back to my mbp.

I have resolved my MacPro sleep issue by removing the Seagate 320GB stock drive. For whatever reason, if that drive is plugged in, it reboots my MacPro when waking from sleep. I had setup 2 WD 500GB drives in RAID 0 as my boot volume and this was configured with Windows XP Pro for other uses.

As of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.

I'm having a strange problem with sleeping my Mac Mini. If i let the computer automatically sleep then the 2 external drives spin up and down continuously. If i sleep manually ( > Sleep) then no such problems occur. The drives spin down, and stay down. Any ideas as to why this happens and how to make automatic sleep replicate manual sleep? why are they not identical?

Often I just put my Macbook Pro with Lion OS to sleep manually, instead of shutting down. Since the upgrade to OS Lion, when I return to the computer I often am greeted with a message that I could not be logged out because Firefox failed to quit. Is sleep a logout? I don't intend to logout...though I do require a password to regain access after the computer enters the sleep state. This is a consistent issue with Lion, which never occurred with the earlier OS.

In order to solve another problem, I was asked to reboot in safe mode. After rebooting in normal mode, Safari now quits immediately after it starts.
I get a report that reads:Â
Exception Type:Â EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000000010a842f9cÂ
What should I do to be able to use Safari again?

my mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina laptop is having Retina screen problems at startup, bootup and wakeup modes. The main failure mode is, during reboot or wakeup the laptop's Retina display screen does not work, a blank Retina screen results, and the keyboard does not light up. Also, at random times the laptop will just crash and self reboot, but then during reboot the Retina screen does not work but the computer reboots. Additionally, this laptop, compared to my work's PC laptops is lightly used, mostly for web browsing, photo viewing and email. At first this problem was only intermittent, but now the Retina displace screen failure mode has become a chronic repeating failure mode and is happening almost everyday and stays in this Retina display failure mode for a longer period of time. Additionally, this 2012 Macbook Pro Retina laptop had a failed graphics card within its first 4 months of light use, the failed graphics card had to be replaced.

I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.

I have an Early 2008 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card. Yesterday I could not get the display to wake from sleep in the morning, and even after a reboot I had nothing to look at. Then I (eventually) moved the card to another PCI Express slot and everything worked! Then after a reboot no video again. I moved the card back to slot one and it worked! Rebooted again, no display. Move card again, everything is fine.

MacPro 12 Core is going into sleep mode (so it seems) and becomes unresponsive requiring a hard reboot by holding the power button. Did this on a new user account I created, then it did it in Recovery Mode while using Disk Utility to repair the drives. I was about to try reinstalling OS X but it seems that this maybe a hardware problem if it happened in Recovery mode. Is my thinking right, or could it still be software? Trying to run Hardware test (D on startup) but can't get it to work so far.

I searched the forum, but saw a lot of sleep issues. None quite like mine. I have a MBP 13" bought in June. When I close the lid, it goes to sleep just fine. When I open it, I can hear it start up. The sleep light becomes illuminated, but then about 5 seconds later goes back to sleep.I have tried to hold the power button and shut the computer down, and start it back up. When it starts up, it shows the white screen with the apple logo, then goes blue, and is about to load the log-on screen, and goes back to sleep. I have already tried an archive and install, and a erase and install. Neither worked.Occassionally it will start back up if I just wait 20-30 minutes. Sorry about the long log, but I do not know what information is needed. I tried to wake from sleep around 1:27 in the logs, and it actually let me boot up and log on around 1:53. To give you an idea of what I was doing to cause these
logs.

I sometimes forgotten to unplug the device before closing the lid. Such as when I'm in a hurry and close the lid of the MBP, only then realize that my iPhone is still attached.
I don't want to put unnecessary stress on the harddrive by it going to sleep, waking up, then sleep again just because that unplugging an USB device woke it up. I notice that this does not happend on my Windows laptop.

Whenever I close the lid to my MacBook it'll go to sleep by turning off the harddisk and the light is blinking. But when I go to pick it up or even move it the Superdrive makes a noise as if its searching for a disk and the apple on the lid/monitor blinks on and off. Basically the computer never really stays in sleep mode.

This is the second time this has happened. I shut my macbook expecting it to go to sleep. I then put it in its booq sleeve and put it in my back pack. About 40 minutes late I pull it out of the case and it is WAY hot and the fan is going like crazy. I open it up and I cant do anything, I think because it is over heated. What is the deal?

I was using my Macbook Pro, finished, put it to sleep and left for a few hours. When I came back it was off. I try to turn it on and the power light comes on and I can hear the disk for about 3 second and then it just shuts off again. I searched the apple support site for this problem and I've done these things. [URL]. I play computer games on it and often the battery would drain. I would plug it in when the 10 minute warning came up, and the little light on the MagSafe plug would turn from green to amber. Lately it had been turning back to green even though the battery icon on the screen said the battery wasn't charged, sometimes the computer would even shut down even though it was plugged in (again, it was plugged in and the light was green, even though the battery icon said it wasn't charged). Maybe it's related to my computer not turning on?

I have an older style MBP, 2.2, running 10.4.3, and the other day after using it about an hour I put it to sleep. After another hour or so I opened it to use it again. Usually just opening it will wake it from sleep. It didnt so I tried pressing any buttons, no luck. Held the power button til it turned off. Tried to boot up but the screen stayed black and the sleep light went on, but did not pulsate. Tried that a few times with the same result. I also tried hooking up an external monitor, just got "no signal".

To resolve the Macbook Pro 2010 (13") not being able to sleep when the lid is open. I even dl-ed this one app called "Please Sleep" that claimed to solve the issue to no avail. My energy saver power settings have me un-check marking the box that says "turn off hard disks when possible". I have my screen saver kicking in 5 minutes, display sleep going at the 10th minute, and then finally the computer sleep itself at 20 minutes. These are under the "plugged" in condition.
Often times I will leave my lid open, go off and do whatever. Come back to find the screen turned off, and no blinking sleep light. Instead I'll press some keys and find myself on the purple background/initial USER log in screen. Upon logging in all my initial boxes, windows, apps are closed and I am forced to re-open all of them all over. Is it correct to assume that this is a widely recognized issue with the Uni-MBP?

New mac user, just bought a new MBA -- when should I just close the lid vs shutting it down completely? i.e. is there a general guideline where if you're not going to use it for at least, say, an hour, then shut down but if you are then close the lid, etc. Also let's assume we are talking about the MBA not being plugged in for this scenario but operating off battery.Â
