While trying to enable my Microsoft Office 2008 to allow me to enter a new code I pasted a rm command into the terminal, as directed by someone in a forum. I think it may have wiped out my desktop because now the entire desktop is gone.
Will Diskwarrior help me with this or is it a lost cause?
All my music and photo files are fine, it is just everything that was on the desktop, which was a lot.
They're still accessible through finder, but now I can't drag-and-drop anything (at all) to the desktop. It was fine a minute ago before I shut down and rebooted my laptop. Restarts and switching users does nothing. I'm using Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4.
Anyone come across a problem where all the desktop icons disappear? I also cannot right click on my desktop to bring up a contextual menu, my machine appears to be running faultlessly apart from that. I have run Onyx to reset permissions and have checked the disk but cannot seem to find anything wrong.
I saved a file 2 hours ago onto my USB from photoshop called 'finallayout'. the file was pretty large however it has totally disappeared. It is not in my trash and I have search for it on my finder bar. I had saved the psd a week/ two weeks ago as the same final name on my desktop but with less work but that has also disappeared.
I turned my mac on today to find that all the desktop items have either disappeared or are taking a very long time to load if they are there. I have tried turning my computer off and on by pressing the power off button due to being unable to turn it off or restart via the button on the desktop. It is also running really slow but it will load safari and itunes just slowly! what can i do to fix it as I have uni work on there and photos of my family that I will not be able to get back if they are lost.
I have a mytouch 4g cell phone with adapter cable, that use to be working just fine with my macbook pro. The cell phone icon would show up on my screen, and I could transfer pictures from there.  Out of the blue, the icon for my phone is no longer showing up on the screen , therefore, I can no longer access pictures and tranfer them to my computer anymore.Â
For a while now, every time i boot up my MacBook the shortcuts on the desktop are all messy placed in the corner.I have to right click-->clean up by name--> and move some of them manually.Yet it keeps happening. This also happens when i connect my MacBook to my 27-inch external apple monitor.I'm running OSX Lion 10.7.Â
I got a windows server with many smb shares and I would like them to stay on the macs desktop even after a reboot or after loosing connection. How do I do this? I got snow leopard.
i have a macbook pro OS X Software, i can access the desktop folder and have files in it but i can't actually use the desktop as in i can't drag anything onto it and no icons appear on it..it seems to be locked..
but i went into "get info" for the desktop and i have permission to read/write and it isn't locked..
I've just done an install of lion from snow leopard on my IMac. Now when I reboot, I just get the grey brushed aluminum background and apple logo slightly higher than centre and a black arrow cursor. No desktop, no login options, nothing else whatsoever appears on the screen. I've tried resetting the pram, and to access the lion recovery mode (command r on boot up) but this does not even appear. All I can get is the same empty screen and arrow cursor.
My imac mid 2009 lost some of the backgrounds like aurora snow leopard, black and white mountains and i think one of the snow leopards why did this happen.
Items entered in Reminders no longer appear on deaktop...using OS10.9.5 (which is not on the Operating System menu below). Cannot find a "preferences" tab or way to make them reappear.
My desktop icons disappeared (on Yosemite). I switched "View/Sort By" to "Kind" away from "Snap to Grid" and they show back up, but then if I move them back to "Snap to Grid" or "None" they disappear again.Â
I restarted my macbook pro (10.5.6) last night after really slow internet speeds, and when it booted back up all my desktop folders disappeared. I can't even find a single file name anymore anywhere on the harddrive.
Apple support said they've seen the desktop directory glitch with the finder, but we could not reverse whatever happend and they suggested I spend $100 bucks on Disc Warrior.
How am I going to find about 1700 files????? My time machine drive stopped backing up two months ago, ggggrrrrrrr -right when I needed it eh?!
Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to get back the file names and folders?
I know the data is still on the drive, just with no allocations.
I've repaired all disc permissions 3 times-it keeps having to repair them everytime I reboot.Terry
I bought my iMac a year and a half ago, but I have no idea how to deal with anything when something goes wrong (because it's so rare that something goes wrong!). Here's what happened:
I woke up, went to my computer, and noticed that a folder was missing off my Desktop. It was full of movie files and it was gone. Thinking a friend had maybe accidentally deleted it, I checked the Trash, not there. I looked through Finder, nowhere to be found. I tried searching specific file names via Spotlight, no luck. I have Apple Care and I called them and the representative took me through all the steps I went through myself to no avail. She also did a disk repair and a permissions repair, no luck.
The weird thing is that if the files were really gone, I would think I would have gotten a lot of disk space back, but I didn't. I'm still where I was the last time I checked, a few days ago.
So now that I've exhausted my own (very limited) knowledge AND Apple's, I'm coming to you. The woman from Apple said sometimes things like this happen when the hard drive is old (only got the computer in April 2008) but I would think that if the files were just spontaneously deleted, I should get a few gigs back on my drive.
In last few days, the weather/temperature display while in dashboard is blank.Normally shows 5 day weather forcast and current temperature for my city. Other functions in dashboard also stopped working, i.e. translator function.

Today, with no major changes at all (or downloads), The screen on my MBP no longer shows the files, folders, and aliases I had set up. Only the Hardrive and Idisk Icons. Everything else is GONE? I rebooted, I relaunched, reviewed preferences. Nothing. I also repaired permissions and rebooted.
If I use Finder and drill to the desktop, I definitely SEE all the files aliases, etc. But the don't show up on my screen?
And when I went to find the Lib plist file to delete it, I had no Library Folder in my user folder. This was repaired with Disk Utility. Aren't I supposed to have a Lib Folder in my User Fole

I'm sure it's not a virus but I'd like to prevent this episode again. -About 10 minutes ago I inserted my memory stick into my keyboard, and then connected to Cisco. -I then tried to connect to my school's server and while the progress bar was loading I opened InDesign. -The Indesign icon started doing it's little jumping thing but nothing was happening. I minimized my browser to look at the progress bar and it was still trying to connect to server. I waited about 2 minutes and when nothing happened I tried a force quit. -It said that InDesign was not responding so I Force Quit it and nothing happened. -I then tried to shut down the progress bar but I had that infuriating pinwheel going. -I decided on a manual shutdown. -I then turned the computer back on. -Repeated the same steps except that this time Force Quit said my Safari AND Finder was not responding. -I Force Quit Finder first. Then Force Quit Connecting to server but all of a sudden my desktop items disappeared as well as my toolbar at the top. -I tried another manual shutdown because I couldn't call up my Force Quit with my shortcut keys and waited a minute. -Turned my computer back on but the screen hadn't changed it was as if I had merely put my computer to sleep. I tried this twice. -Then I turned it off again and this time unplugged my computer and waited a couple seconds. -I am now on my third try and am afraid to connect to my school's server. I have only opened Safari to type this. I have an assignment due tomorrow!
Last night all my desktop icons just disappeared all of a sudden, I restarted my laptop and they came back but when I try to click and drag anything on my desktop or copy something between finder windows, they just disappear again and Finder crashes. I downloaded the newest update and installed it, which didn't fix the problem so I found a similar problem on another forum and tried doing what they recommended (which was to delete the Cache folder and some files from the library and restart the computer) After I restarted, finder started crashing every 2-3 seconds and giving me a message saying that Finder quit unexpectadly while trying to restore it's windows.Â
I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook, 4GB RAM, 1TB HD, 2GHz dual core processor.
I use an external drive connected via firewire for time machine. The drive still seems active but I cannot access it at all, not through finder, disk repair or other. I have tried disconnecting, reconnecting all cabline, restarting bith the drive and the iMac, I have doen the SMC and PRAM reset actions. Still not visible.Â
I do not have the option to connect to another MAC, my MBP does nto have FW and thatis th eonly option on the drive.Â
Running a fairly new iMac with 10.7.4 and came home to find that the finder flashes, I can't access the trash and the files on the desktop disappeared. Haven't downloaded anything (and my kids also claim not to have).

i also can't click on anything on the desktop, the only thing that is there and works are the words on the top, stopping at help. Also after every word i write, a pop up says 'alert cannot contact spell checker,' When i open safari i also cannot get it back to finder, and i can't search anything on the computer because after the second letter the screen flashes.
It started this morning i tried to write something in stickies and the computer went crazy to a blue screen and the loading circle started spinning around so i shut it down, when i loaded it up i had all these problems.
I have iBook g4 from 2005. What should i do, i don't know anything about computers. I tried searching online i tried to use killall Dock in terminal it didn't work, it said no matching processes were found.
