I noticed this after the 10.5.3 upgrade. Inside the applications folder there is an invisible file (no icon) labeled Applications Folder. Get Info reveals it to be a unix executable file. I'm a newbie, and not sure what it means.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSometimes I'd like to create an aliases/shortcuts from an application which resides within a folder and place that alias inside the root of the /Applications/ folder instead. However, for some reason I can't do this on my wife's Mac running Leopard 10.5.8.
So instead of getting a "green arrow" type icon whenever I click the app's icon while holding down ALT and CMD I now get a white circle with a line over it, apparently indicating that this is something I can't do. I believe I checked my drive's permissions (using "Disk utility") but found no errors (or had the errors fixed), so what could be the problem?
By the way, I've also noticed that I'm asked to verify (with the user-login password) if I want to delete (put an application in the trash) something from inside the Applications folder. Is this normal? I'm not used to this from MacOSX Tiger 10.4.

i was searching for a programm that allowes you to hide a folder so that it is still clickable... all i found where lots of programms that made the folder invisible but after they where invisible i couldnt click on them anymore.
is it possible to make a folder invisible and place it at some spot on the screen i remember and when i click on that spot on the screen where the invisible folder is that the folder would open?

Somehow, when installing RealPlayer I managed to get something called RealNetwork (a Folder full of files) installed in my User Library. It was 395.62 GB so must have been some sort of malware. I was able to find it and delete it from my hard drive. BUT I had backed up my hard drive to a non-bootable backup the day before so that file is still in the invisible Library folder on that drive, taking up almost 400 GB there, too.
How to delete it from the backup drive since I can't boot that drive?

In some of my folders, the inside folders appear to be blank and have no text. When I click on the folder icon, the name of the folder is there, but there appears to be a hard return at the end of the text. When I delete the hard return, the text becomes visible.
Rather than go to each folder and do this - why this is happening, and how to correct all the folders wherever they may be on any disk.
spotlight is cool but how do I search for files within a specified folder?
I select the folder, hit cmd+f, I can see the folder selected, i type name matches *.avi hit enter and nothing. I try avi only and nothing. I try holidays and hit enter and nothing.
I am planning on buying a new Mac this weekend and was trying to decide on a hard drive size. When I clicked "Get Info" on the Applications folder it said 31.7GB, but when I actually added up the amount of space of each app in the folder, it only came to 12.6GB. I even included the miscellaneous folders (some of which were a couple GBs in size). If I were to transfer to another computer, would it say my Apps take up a different amount of space?

I work in a cross platform environment (windows/mac) where we typically save common files to a shared network drive. I've found when I save a file directly from excel (as opposed to saving it locally, then copying it over) it created an invisible ._filename file in the same directory. I know it's a property/resource file for the file that I just created, but it's a little confusing for some windows users and just clutters up the share directory. Is there any way to prevent the creation of the ._filename file while still saving directly from excel?
(I'd prefer not to save locally, then move to network drive - it's cleaner for me if I can just save directly) So far, I've found that this only happens with MS Office. I've opened a sql file in textwrangler and komodo, edited it, and saved it to the network and no invisible files are created.
NOTE: this is different the the fix that apple had published regarding not creating DS_Store files - that refers to copying files from the finder to a network drive and I don't have any problems with that.
I heard that Google can't/doesn't search anything inside of an iFrame (which iWeb utilizes). Is this true? I'm wondering because we've had a web presence for years now and we still don't seem to be coming up very high in searches, and our competitors do. I just installed iWork '08 on my new Macbook pro (snow leopard and general '09 programs are on it) and for some reason, the text coloring and highlighting, generally anything to do with the text and whatever appears on the pages themselves have completely gone blank. The highlight appears as this light purplish color, I can not get the text to read as visible. It appears white no matter what. Even the text blinker isn't showing. Is there a problem with installing iWork '08 on an '09 based Mac? This is a legal copy of iWork I've had since buying my first Mac, so I know it can't really be the disc screwing up, is there anyone that might be able to help? This is an image of the problem. As you can see, the black is the default font color, but it does not show up as it. Also, the general coloration of it is off.

When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?

It's not a serious problem, since clicking once or twice suddenly brings it back to the visible world. But I'm very curious why this would happen. I have been running a clean install of SL on my aluminum macbook. This never happened with Leopard.

The first time I opened stickies, I created a new sticky and all was going well. Then I saved it. It got saved as a text file, and the sticky disappeared.
Now when I open a new sticky, it is invisible. I know it is there because in View it shows an untitled sticky. If I choose a particular color of sticky, I can see that in the View as well, but no actual sticky on screen.
What am I doing wrong?
My apologies if I have opened the thread in the wrong category. This is my first post on the forum and this seemed like the best way to start it.
The other day I opened iPhoto from the dock only to find that when I clicked on it the icon disappeared. There is now a gap in my dock where iPhoto should be and when I rollover the gap it shows up as iPhoto, but without the image. The same then happened with System Preferences. I thought that it may have sorted itself out when I turned off my computer for the day but first thing this morning when I switched it on - the same 2 icons are gone. They still open the apps, I can quit out of them by right clicking and go into options menu etc. I attached a screen shot if it is of any use. Am using Snow Leopard also.
