OS X :: Invisible Menu Bar At Boot

Jan 23, 2010

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, once in a while my menu bar doesn't show up after booting! See screenshot below. It's not a serious problem, since clicking once or twice suddenly brings it back to the visible world. But I'm very curious why this would happen. I have been running a clean install of SL on my aluminum macbook. This never happened with Leopard.

OS X :: Can't Get To The Mac Boot Menu

Nov 18, 2009

well at my school I was given the "privilege" to be a Linux beta tester. I chose Macpup, because it is small, works on the old computers, and looks like a mac. I wanted to try it on my Mac, but I can't get to the boot menu. I've tried holding C, +OPT+SHIFT+DELETE, but whatever I do, it doesn't work. No, twice it got there, but it was just showing a tiny folder with the mac finder logo and a question mark flicking back and forth for a few minutes, then booted mac.

OS X :: Unable To Access Boot Menu With USB HDD

Jun 29, 2010

how to create a bootable backup of my Macintosh HD on a LaCie 500GB USB external HDD which is 2-3 years old. I formatted the drive with a GUID partition table scheme, with the volume formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which I believe is the correct setup.

However, when I try to boot from the external HDD by holding down Option key during startup, I do not get the boot menu, instead the computer freezes at a blank grey screen and doesn't boot anything. If I remove the USB drive and do the same, the boot menu appears with Macintosh HD as the only choice (as would be expected).

Windows On Mac :: Rename Windows Volume In Boot Camp Startup Menu?

Nov 12, 2009

This is my first post here... even though, I've read a lot of the things on this forum, but never decided to post a question 'til now... now that i bought a macbook pro that is.

Actually I have some sort of annoyance with boot camp. It works as it's intended (with windows 7, which is a miracle, because everyone complains about that combination). But whenever I boot up and press "alt" to select the hard drive i want to boot, it always shows Windows. Can i change it for something else? and, how can I do it? Both of my partitions have names of their own... they're not generic... but still, they are not working, what can I do??

MacBook Pro :: Suddenly All Of The Wireless Signals Disappear From AirPort Menu Up On Menu Bar

Dec 27, 2009

I've realized that sometimes I "lose" my wireless signal. I am not using an AirPort router (I'm using Linksys, if that's at all helpful). I've noticed that suddenly all of the wireless signals disappear from the AirPort menu up on the menu bar, except the network that I am connected to (i.e., I only see my router's name there). It also becomes impossible for me to browse the internet, so what I've done to troubleshoot this is disable the AirPort, put the computer to sleep, and disconnect/reconnect my router. When I turn it on, it seems to work. I've also tried simply disabling and then re-enabling AirPort, but it doesn't work after that.

OS X :: Missing Services Menu From Finder / Service Says Its Building Menu

my "services" menu has disappeared as an option in finder. When I try to access it by right-clicking a finder item (folder or file), it's just plain missing. However if I look for it under the finder menu bar, the arrow beside service says 'building'. But I've been waiting for hours and it doesn't look like anything's happening.

OS X :: Menu Navigation - Access Menu From Keyboard By Using Ctrl + F2 Key

Dec 16, 2010

I recently bought myself a Macbook Pro 13-inch model and I've been loving it so far. One thing that really bugs me is how bad the menu navigation is in OS X. I just read this on Macrumors and the only way to access menu from keyboard is by using ctrl+F2 key for which I have to press ctrl+fn+f2 key since F2 is a secondary function. Also, there is no way of going directly to the middle of the menu by keyboard shortcuts, right? If that is true, Mac OS X is still not polished enough for laptops. is there are a better way to control the menu items?

Software :: Stickies Are Invisible On 10.4.10?

Nov 13, 2007

I am a switcher trying to learn the ropes and have a Macbook laptop 10.4.10 OSX.

The first time I opened stickies, I created a new sticky and all was going well. Then I saved it. It got saved as a text file, and the sticky disappeared.

Now when I open a new sticky, it is invisible. I know it is there because in View it shows an untitled sticky. If I choose a particular color of sticky, I can see that in the View as well, but no actual sticky on screen.

What am I doing wrong?

My apologies if I have opened the thread in the wrong category. This is my first post on the forum and this seemed like the best way to start it.

OS X :: Dock Icons Invisible But Functioning

Nov 1, 2010

The other day I opened iPhoto from the dock only to find that when I clicked on it the icon disappeared. There is now a gap in my dock where iPhoto should be and when I rollover the gap it shows up as iPhoto, but without the image. The same then happened with System Preferences. I thought that it may have sorted itself out when I turned off my computer for the day but first thing this morning when I switched it on - the same 2 icons are gone. They still open the apps, I can quit out of them by right clicking and go into options menu etc. I attached a screen shot if it is of any use. Am using Snow Leopard also.

OS X :: Application That Displays Invisible Characters?

Jun 22, 2009

So I work with computational chemistry, and we usually work with files on windows boxes, however we've started the transition over to Mac Pros. I have my macbook pro, and I've installed the necessary software, however I have a problem.

We use Notepad to make the input files on XP, because it does not inbed any invisible characters (besides returns etc.) However, whenever I transfer a file (.txt) made with notepad over to my mac, the file will not run in the program we use. It gives an error that usually means you have invisible characters in your input file.

So if I retype the file in Textedit, (NOT copy and paste), the file works fine. The exact same (looking) input file. Does anyone know what's going on here, or know of an application that will let me see these pesky invisible characters? I've tried word, but couldn't find what I wanted,

OS X :: How To Hide Invisible Files On Leopard 10.5.7

Jun 25, 2009

On Leopard 10.5.7, I had to unhide my invisible files for some job using the command:
#defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
#killall Finder

I am trying the reverse commands but the Finder still shows files what are supposed to be hidden.I tried:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
followed by a killall Finder and even reboot.

I would like to avoid a re-install. Who can confirm a working solution as some in this forum suggest that the above reverse commands are no longer effective on Leopard?

The icons are present on the apps themselves, but also do not show up when I look at stacks. Is it just yet another SL bug? Just to add: killing the Dock doesn't fix it, quitting the Finder doesn't fix it, and restarting the computer doesn't fix it.

OS X Yosemite :: Windows Become Transparent Or Even Entirely Invisible

Dec 3, 2014

Since I have upgraded to Yosemite, I've been experiencing problems with the windows. Sometimes, they become transparent or even entirely invisible, I can see the borders when I pass over them with the mouse on mission control and I can perform actions as if they were fully functional, I just can't see them. How can I solve this? It happens with every window open at the moment, but it doesn't affect the ones that I open after.

The image shows how the window become sometimes, other times it's completely invisible.

OS X :: Hard Disk Filling Up - Invisible Files?

Feb 6, 2010

The free space on my MacBook is disappearing fast but I don't know why. I am hoping someone can tell me where to start solving this problem. It must be invisible files but what can I do about it? This started after I restored from a Time Machine backup to a new hard disk after the hard disk failed (another story). The Time Machine backup was about a week old (isn't it always the case?) so I don't think it is likely that I could have restored anything that might have had anything to do with the hard disk failure. Everything seemed to be working fine, having spent hours resorting emails and trying to reconstruct files I had lost from the week I didn't back up. During that week I had bought an iPhone. When I connected it to the restored computer it deleted all the apps I had installed. Not a big problem, as I was able to track them down from an iTunes receipt and reinstall them. I then attached my iPod and the computer had to replace all the files with new ones. As there were a lot of songs and photos I left it to do this and went to bed. Next day the iPod now had newly replaced files and seems fine. But there is a warning that the startup disk is full. No new files had been put on the computer, which had about 9.5 Gb free space. I deleted some files so I could do some things with the computer to find out what was happening. The space thus freed soon disappeared. I then deleted Parallels Desktop so that I could free up more space. I now had 29.67 Gb free space. I tried searching for large files but nothing suspicious seems to detectable. By the end of the day the free space had gone down to 24.39 Gb. It now stands at 23.22.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody MBP - Invisible Shield & Heat ?

Jan 8, 2009

A questions for all of those who have any sort of invisible shield (zagg, bse, bodyguardz etc etc) on their Unibody MBP (or MB for that matter).

Anyone having any issues with the cpu reaching dangerously high temperatures? I heard that the invisible shield is particularly bad because it insulates the aluminum on the mbp, thereby not allowing it to properly dissipate heat. This is one of the things that's preventing me from pulling the trigger on getting one.
