I'm not sure how it happened, but I am seeing a shortcut for my Applications folder INSIDE my main ("normal") Applications folder. Should I delete it? What causes this to happen?

Sometimes I'd like to create an aliases/shortcuts from an application which resides within a folder and place that alias inside the root of the /Applications/ folder instead. However, for some reason I can't do this on my wife's Mac running Leopard 10.5.8.
So instead of getting a "green arrow" type icon whenever I click the app's icon while holding down ALT and CMD I now get a white circle with a line over it, apparently indicating that this is something I can't do. I believe I checked my drive's permissions (using "Disk utility") but found no errors (or had the errors fixed), so what could be the problem?
By the way, I've also noticed that I'm asked to verify (with the user-login password) if I want to delete (put an application in the trash) something from inside the Applications folder. Is this normal? I'm not used to this from MacOSX Tiger 10.4.
I noticed this after the 10.5.3 upgrade. Inside the applications folder there is an invisible file (no icon) labeled Applications Folder. Get Info reveals it to be a unix executable file. I'm a newbie, and not sure what it means.

I keep my iTunes Music Folder on an external 320gb HD. I'm about to move it to a 500gb HD. Rather than go through the steps of changing library location and then consolidating the library, can I just do this (all w/iTunes turned off):1. Copy entire iTunes folder, incl. Music folder and library.xml, etc. from old to new drive2. Disconnect old drive.3. Rename the new drive the same as the old drive.If the drive name, folder structure and file path are the same, will iTunes notice the difference between the two drives when I launch it? I'm on an MBP and, w/the simple OS X naming system, it seems like it shouldn't be a problem.

Because of problems accessing our network using Snow Leopard, I've started using the 'Favorites' folder as a 'shortcut' to our networked drives. It works fine and is very useful. A colleague has asked me to set the same facility up on his computer. When I dragged 'Favorites' from his 'Libary' folder to the sidebar, it appeared there with a heart icon. 'Sweet!' we thought. However, we then found that when we dragged one of the folders which he wanted to have in his favorites over to the sidebar, the O.S. proceeded to make a copy of the whole folder contents - instead of it working as a shortcut. What are we doing wrong?

When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?

View 6 Replies View RelatedIn Tiger, I always had the main harddrive in the upper right hand corner of the desktop, easy to click on to open up a finder window. I wanted to make this happen again in SL, but couldn't figure it out. I tried dragging the main harddrive from under "devices" in Finder to the "Desktop" folder, and it poofed away....I go to undo, and there is no undo option for that. And it is not in my trash folder. What the heck did I do? Why did the drive disappear in a poof just because I dragged it over? How can I fix it? I don't even know what to search for but "my folder went away in a poof" turns up nothing

I recently downloaded Amazon's Kindle for my Mac and it automatically installed a content folder in my Documents folder along with my other folders. Now, I like to keep my Documents folder neatly organized and this My Kindle Content folder kind of messes things up a bit - I really don't like seeing this folder in my Documents folder. question: Does anyone know how to move this folder to another location? I've tried to browse the Kindle app, but I haven't found any obvious way to move it. However, I may have overlooked it. Also, I have tried to browse the Forums to see if someone else asked this question already - no luck yet. Has anyone out there had the same problem? When I clicked "Get Info" on the Applications folder it said 31.7GB, but when I actually added up the amount of space of each app in the folder, it only came to 12.6GB. I even included the miscellaneous folders (some of which were a couple GBs in size). If I were to transfer to another computer, would it say my Apps take up a different amount of space?

In VIEWING (to print) my iTunes music (in finder), how can i view subfolders without clicking on the triangle of each main folder?I am trying to print a list of all my music. For example, main folder is BEATLES. Subfolders are Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, etc...and I want to view and print all the subfolders. How do I set up mailbox so that all incoming emails from my secondary gmail account bypass my inbox and go directly to a pre-labeled smart folder? Also, how do I send copies of these to my primary gmail account into a pre-labeled folder in that account; once again bypassing my inbox (primary reason is that I do not want to get all my work emails into my inbox but I need to have them connected to mailbox at the end of the day.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy dad was saving a bunch of Word docs on his Mac - he had one large file that he split up into twenty-some smaller files, which he then saved onto both his desktop and on a flash drive. Somehow along the way (neither he nor I had any clue how) but 4 of those files saved as an alias that point to nowhere. In other words, I can't find the originals anywhere on his computer or flash drives.
Even stranger is that one of those files aliased to the Applications folder. Keep in mind these are all supposed to be word documents. They all still end with .doc, but their type is an alias. I have no clue how they were created as an alias, but they were. It's probably a longshot without knowing where the original is located, but do any of you guys know how to possibly retrieve this?
I have a friends MacBook running 10.6.8 2.26Ghz Intel Core Duo 8 gig ram. I have installed UnrarX a couple of times with no errors in the installation process, however the application does not appear in the applications folder or any where else and cannot find it to open .rar files.
I fixed the issue by simply copying the UnrarX app from my MacBookPro but would like to find out what is going on. I have been told by my friend that she has had this issue before.

Is the there a way to force iTunes to store my mobile applications on my external drive automatically?I have my library set to an external and all my music, movies, etc goes onto the proper location except the mobile applications. I know I can use the consolidate library command, which will move the apps to the external. But as soon as I d/l another app iTunes begins saving them to the default folder again.
