Software :: Finder Quits / Relaunches After Changing International Settings

Aug 6, 2009

I've created a new user account in Mac OS 10.5.7 and I have changed the International settings of this user, in particular, I set the language to Portuguese. Now, when this user logins in, Finder does not start properly. It quits and immediately tries to restart again. The result is that the Finder menu blinks on the screen. I can run other applications normally, Safari, Terminal, etc. The problem is, AFAIK, only with Finder.

Software :: Losing Time And Date Settings / Wireless Settings Changing?

Aug 23, 2009

I have a G5 Duel 2GHz Power PC, Recently I was losing the time, date and wireless settings so I assumed as my machine is now 4 years old the PRAM battery was up for renewal. This has now been replaced but I'm still losing my settings, not all the time but randomly, sometimes I lose my wireless key sometimes I lose time and date sometimes both, this can happen daily.

I have removed the (New) Battery and checked the voltage and it reads 3.6 Volts, I haven't checked this under load though, so presuming that the battery is OK, what else could cause this.. a failing System Board?

Software :: Finder Quits Every 1.5 Minutes

Dec 25, 2008

I am operating OSX 10.4.11 on a 2005 Power PC G5. My Finder has started quitting about every 1.5 minutes. I've trashed the preferences several times to no avail. I've trashed a couple of programs I downloaded recently and which I'm not using, but no change.

I THINK it started happening after I downloaded the most recent MAC Security Update but I'm not positive.

Mac Pro :: Finder Suddenly Quits And Restarts?

Feb 28, 2012

I have an early 2008 MacPro-10GB memory. Recently switched out two of the drives and decided to try a mirrored RAID setup with 2 3TB Seagate Barracuda drives as the boot set (using Lion 10.7.2). Ever since, I have had random episodes where the finder quits, everything closes and then the finder comes back up and is ready to go but all my programs have been shut down in the process. It can happen as often as four times an hour. I don't lose more than a couple of minutes of work but if I'm iChatting, I suddenly lose the connection or scanning stops or printing stops. Should I not have tried to set up the RAID?

Software :: Finder Quits After Repairing Permissions?

Jun 10, 2008

I recently ran Disk Utility on my MacBook (OS 10.4.11), and it said the node structure was invalid. The next day, I repaired the disk with DiskWarrior (I didn't have an OS X disk around, so I couldn't use Disk Utility).

However! Before I tried using DiskWarrior, I repaired permissions in Disk Utility, figuring that it was good routine maintenance. Disk Utility changed some permissions, and ever since, the Finder immediately quits and restarts when I navigate to certain folders. The "bad folders" seem to vary with no apparent cause: for a while it only cared about a certain folder inside my home folder, but now it's started to quit whenever I navigate to my home folder (which means I can't use Command-N, though I can make new windows by clicking on the hard drive's desktop icon). Occasionally it lets me go to my home folder for no apparent reason, and sometimes I can get to otherwise "bad" folders by clicking on my shortcuts on the leftmost panel of the finder window (though not always). In short, it's not very consistent, and changes over time. It's still doing this even after repairing the disk, zapping PRAM, and trying fsck (which said the disk was OK). Both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior think my permissions are fine.

OS X :: Unable To Access The Files - Finder Quits And Restarts?

Sep 27, 2010

My Finder "quits" or "restarts" when I try to access any file other than a single file that is on the Desktop.

WANT: To repair the operation of the finder so I have access to all my files.

SYSTEM: I am currently running OS 10.5.8 on an older Macbook, with a 325 GB HD. (Note: I started having this trouble on OS 10.5.7 but upgraded to 10.5.8 but the problem still persisted.)

SYMPTOMS:
1. Most of the time when I access my files on the file called Dons MacBook all the file information shown on the Desktop will disappear and then reappear in a second similar to when you are starting the OS. The Finder itself, with all the files listed, will not appear

2. However, sometimes the Finder WILL appear and when all the files are shown and i click on any file or folder the "busy" circle will appear for a time and then the Desktop will "quit" or "reset" again as describe above.

3. I ran Disk Doctor from my start up disk. The disk needed no repairs. When I went to "Verify Disk Premissions" I received the following: "Error: No valid packages."

4. Forum research told me that I needed a "Basesystem.pkg" installed in my Library file but even if I found one on the net or my original OS CD I do not have access to my Library folder because when I try to access it in the Finder, if the Finder actually appears, it "resets" as described above.

5. All the programs on my Dock will start and operate normally. These programs "go get" stored files and run them normally. From that I know that the "resetting" of the Finder does not mean that I am losing programs or they are being erased. (I can only run programs on the Dock because they are not accessible in the Finder as all other files.)

6. I can access the finder information when I am trying to Save a file. The Finder window that appears for me to search for a place to put a document works okay.

7. I can download email attachments (pdf) documents, for example, to the Desktop one at a time but if I put them in a common file on the Desktop, when I call up the common file, the Finder window starts but "resets" as noted above.

8. If I have a file on a CD when the Finder comes up to list the files in the CD, it "resets" as described above.

Intel Mac :: Finder Quits / Stalls And Freezes - Electrical Damage?

Jul 2, 2012

My 2.33gh intel core 2 is acting erratic. The finder quits, stalls and freezes...it turns off and then reappears. Programs fail. adobe will not run. It was on during the huge electrical storm last weekend. It started acting like this after. It was on a surge protector, but those are not 100%.

I can get a ways into backing up files. I am attempting to install Lion, but I did not journal the partition. And It looks like I have to clean install and erase the HD. If power surge did damage, software will not work. Does the finder issue look like electrical damage?

Applications :: ITunes Relaunches Automatically - Compressor Not Launching

Feb 17, 2008

I'm running iTunes 7.6 on a MBP 2.4GHz with 10.5.2 installed. Last night, after having a problem with Compressor not launching(ie it would launch but no window would display), I was forced to take Apple's Compressor Troubleshooting basics and trash Compressor, Qmaster, and Motion. I reinstalled those applications without a hitch and everything is working. Or so it seems until this morning when I tried to play a song in iTunes. It would hang up briefly, then quit. The subsequent error message was that "...The Problem may have been caused by the FX plug-in." I trashed CoverSutra, thinking that may have been the problem, despite the fact I never used it. I even uninstalled iWOW2 with no results. Trashing the iTunes .plist did yield some positive results as songs would play, but if I tried to quit iTunes, it will automatically relaunch.

After perusing the Apple support discussion, it seems this is a common problem, although many of the reports were from last month. I just find it odd that all of a sudden I'm now encountering these problems. I do have Synergy installed, but I've never had any problems with it before in the past and even with it not running, iTunes still behaves poorly.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Changing Settings?

I just installed Snow Leopard, and immediately I noticed that everything was darker. I had to adjust the gamma to get it to look normal, but things seem a little too bright now. Also in Adium, it messed up my fonts. My text is so small while my received messages are normal size, and I can't seem to get my sent message text to be the same size as my received message text. There are other small things too, but it's annoying and I'd like my old configs back, is there any way or do I just need to put up with it?

OS X :: Changing Network Settings To Use SSH In Safari

Aug 20, 2010

I am having trouble finding a way to make Safari use a SOCKS proxy without going into Network Settings (permission disabled). I am able to use the Terminal to connect via SSH to my server, but I can't get Safari to use the tunnel instead of the normal connection. Is there a way to do this via Terminal without root access? I would also use Firefox's internal network settings but the ability to mount DMGs is turned off to users by the network admin so I can't even install a portable version of it. Dragging to the Applications folder is also disabled. If there is a way to change Safari's settings via Terminal or a way to run Firefox without installing it, I would be very glad to know.

Applications :: GarageBand 5 Freezes On Changing Settings

Feb 22, 2009

I've just installed the whole iLife 09 package on a MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM, 200 Gb disk (with 112 free Gb), and I have an issue I can't figure out how to fix it. Every time I try to change the "project settings", the program freezes and most of the times I have to shut it down using "alt+command+esc". It makes me feel like using a darn PC. It's the same if I try to acceed to the settings by clicking on the "LCD display" or by pressing "ctrl+command+F". The program just freezes without even letting me see the project settings (Tempo, Key, etc.). And I think that my computer settings shouldn't be a problem. A friend of mine had just the same trouble with a MacBook Pro just like mine. Meanwhile, I've been using GarageBand with a white MacBook with 1,83 Ghz and I've always used this feature without any problem!

Software :: Changing Settings To Affect All Users

Nov 14, 2008

I am a Technology Specialist at a school district, and we have 16 macbook laptops and 4 macbook pro laptops. These laptops have 3 standalone accounts on them: Student, Teacher, and administrator. However, if you go to the login prompt with name and password, students and teachers can log into their Windows network accounts. When this happens, however, it gives them more freedom on the macs. Is there a way to set security settings for user accounts/user groups that haven't logged onto a computer yet?

Also, is there a way to set Connected Servers to show up on the desktop for all users? I go in as admin, and set it to show on desktop, but it only shows on the admin desktop, no one elses.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Changing The Default Settings For A Printer?

Mar 29, 2012

I have an Epson Workforce 845 Printer.  It is working well.  However, I am running into one annoyance.  The Epson printer will take envelopes in Cassette 1.  I ahve envelopes loaded there and plain letter paper in Cassette 2.  When I print an envelope it is no problem.  I simply in the Print dialog select the Envelope preset and it works well. However, I don't wish to select a plain paper preset *each time* I print an ordinary document.  However, the Default print settings defaults to Casette1 and I see no way to force it to default to cassette 2 except when I don't select an override.

the blog itself discusses the issue, and the fix is found in the comments.

Basically, for now the fix is to open Terminal App and enter:

"defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2″

without the quotes, and hit return.

a log out or restart might be required.

this fix seems to stick even after re-boots and shut-downs.

OS X :: Finder Keeps Changing View Options?

May 3, 2010

When I'm looking at files and folders in Finder, I want it to be in List view. When I open a folder that contains photos, I want it to show them as tiles. However, when I set a folder to show as tiles, it changes *all* folder options, meaning my normal files and folders start showing as tiles too, when they should be showing as a list. How do I fix this so that it shows the right view depending on the contents of the folder? This is proving to be a major headache coming from Windows 7.

In addition, the Finder window keeps on defaulting to a size that isn't wide enough to view all columns. I keep on having to press the + button to make it shows all the columns of information. How do I fix this so that it shows all of the information straight away?

I have to admit, these are some really major usability hurdles I've come across, and after a week of peaceful usage, I have that feeling of buyers remorse again right now because of this!
