Software :: Finder Quits Every 1.5 Minutes
Dec 25, 2008
I am operating OSX 10.4.11 on a 2005 Power PC G5. My Finder has started quitting about every 1.5 minutes. I've trashed the preferences several times to no avail. I've trashed a couple of programs I downloaded recently and which I'm not using, but no change.
I THINK it started happening after I downloaded the most recent MAC Security Update but I'm not positive.
If I boot up in

It happened 3 times today and at most 20 times within the last 3 months. When using Quick Look to view movie files, the movie freezes and the Finder restarts. Kinda annoying. No error message shows up after the restart.

I have an early 2008 MacPro-10GB memory. Recently switched out two of the drives and decided to try a mirrored RAID setup with 2 3TB Seagate Barracuda drives as the boot set (using Lion 10.7.2). Ever since, I have had random episodes where the finder quits, everything closes and then the finder comes back up and is ready to go but all my programs have been shut down in the process. It can happen as often as four times an hour. I don't lose more than a couple of minutes of work but if I'm iChatting, I suddenly lose the connection or scanning stops or printing stops. Should I not have tried to set up the RAID?

I recently ran Disk Utility on my MacBook (OS 10.4.11), and it said the node structure was invalid. The next day, I repaired the disk with DiskWarrior (I didn't have an OS X disk around, so I couldn't use Disk Utility).
However! Before I tried using DiskWarrior, I repaired permissions in Disk Utility, figuring that it was good routine maintenance. Disk Utility changed some permissions, and ever since, the Finder immediately quits and restarts when I navigate to certain folders. The "bad folders" seem to vary with no apparent cause: for a while it only cared about a certain folder inside my home folder, but now it's started to quit whenever I navigate to my home folder (which means I can't use Command-N, though I can make new windows by clicking on the hard drive's desktop icon). Occasionally it lets me go to my home folder for no apparent reason, and sometimes I can get to otherwise "bad" folders by clicking on my shortcuts on the leftmost panel of the finder window (though not always). In short, it's not very consistent, and changes over time. It's still doing this even after repairing the disk, zapping PRAM, and trying fsck (which said the disk was OK). Both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior think my permissions are fine.

My Finder "quits" or "restarts" when I try to access any file other than a single file that is on the Desktop.
WANT: To repair the operation of the finder so I have access to all my files.
SYSTEM: I am currently running OS 10.5.8 on an older Macbook, with a 325 GB HD. (Note: I started having this trouble on OS 10.5.7 but upgraded to 10.5.8 but the problem still persisted.)
SYMPTOMS:
1. Most of the time when I access my files on the file called Dons MacBook all the file information shown on the Desktop will disappear and then reappear in a second similar to when you are starting the OS. The Finder itself, with all the files listed, will not appear
2. However, sometimes the Finder WILL appear and when all the files are shown and i click on any file or folder the "busy" circle will appear for a time and then the Desktop will "quit" or "reset" again as describe above.
3. I ran Disk Doctor from my start up disk. The disk needed no repairs. When I went to "Verify Disk Premissions" I received the following: "Error: No valid packages."
4. Forum research told me that I needed a "Basesystem.pkg" installed in my Library file but even if I found one on the net or my original OS CD I do not have access to my Library folder because when I try to access it in the Finder, if the Finder actually appears, it "resets" as described above.
5. All the programs on my Dock will start and operate normally. These programs "go get" stored files and run them normally. From that I know that the "resetting" of the Finder does not mean that I am losing programs or they are being erased. (I can only run programs on the Dock because they are not accessible in the Finder as all other files.)
6. I can access the finder information when I am trying to Save a file. The Finder window that appears for me to search for a place to put a document works okay.
7. I can download email attachments (pdf) documents, for example, to the Desktop one at a time but if I put them in a common file on the Desktop, when I call up the common file, the Finder window starts but "resets" as noted above.
8. If I have a file on a CD when the Finder comes up to list the files in the CD, it "resets" as described above.

I've created a new user account in Mac OS 10.5.7 and I have changed the International settings of this user, in particular, I set the language to Portuguese. Now, when this user logins in, Finder does not start properly. It quits and immediately tries to restart again. The result is that the Finder menu blinks on the screen. I can run other applications normally, Safari, Terminal, etc. The problem is, AFAIK, only with Finder.

My 2.33gh intel core 2 is acting erratic. The finder quits, stalls and freezes...it turns off and then reappears. Programs fail. adobe will not run. It was on during the huge electrical storm last weekend. It started acting like this after. It was on a surge protector, but those are not 100%.
I can get a ways into backing up files. I am attempting to install Lion, but I did not journal the partition. And It looks like I have to clean install and erase the HD. If power surge did damage, software will not work. Does the finder issue look like electrical damage?

Well I just had an eye-opening experience...
My dock was acting weird (not showing open applications) so I thought I'd open terminal and do a killall to restart it.
Yep, dock disappeared; Waited... waited... it didn't reopen. Well why the heck not? So I figured I might need to restart Finder to kick it into gear. So... a killall on Finder...
...Uh oh. It didn't reopen! I started panicking: "Run Finder", "Launch Finder", "Open Finder" — nothing worked!! I even tried "killall Finder" a second time only to receive the poignant response, "Process not found".
Luckily I knew I had a Safari window open somewhere, but I still needed to get to it. So I pressed Expos all windows... nothing. Okay, clear all windows... nothing. Of course, Finder was gone, so I couldn't use Expos. Okay, let's cmd+tab to switch to Safari... nothing, nothing was working! I couldn't even minimize the other windows! Eventually I manually dragged all the open windows and apps out of the way (haven't had to do that since the 80s).
Phew, Safari is still there... quickly type into google: "how to launch finder" — All results just said to use "killall Finder", and I know that wasn't working so: "where is Finder". ...Oh, okay, it's located in System/Library, just need to get there now... so I instinctively moved my cursor down to click on the Finder ico... d'oh, of course: no dock. I'll have to get there using the HDD icon on my desktop; dragged the Safari window out of the way - my desktop was bare: no icons at all! Of course — Finder was dead! How do you access the file system to fix Finder when you can't use Finder!? What do I do now??
I sat for a few moments looking at the blank space of the dock and the empty desktop, pondering the impending doom of a restart and losing everything I have open... Then I remembered... Aha! I still have that terminal window open! So I sifted back through my windows again, dragging them to the sides like it was Windows 3.1, and eventually found the open terminal window. Rapidly typed, "System/Library/Coreservices/Finder.app" - ENTER...
Heard the CPU spin and my desktop was suddenly flooded with icons again. YES, we're back in business. Another quick command and Dock reopened, saving the day once again!I wanted to post this as it made me realize how much most of us rely on the Finder, Expos, and even the much taken for granted: minimizing. Try surviving without those for a day — even 5 minutes — and you'll very quickly find out how important they are!

I updated my circa 2013 Macbook Air 13" to OSX Mavericks and a strange issue has started. Every time I open Finder it takes literal minutes to load the file listing, and while it loads it freezes the section where the file listing loads with whatever background it was opened over. This happens all the time, and once it finally loads, it will do the same thing if I try to go to a different folder. This renders Finder essentially useless and I have had to add a third party (forklift) app to browse and manage files.Â

1) I can't launch Finder, the message box "Finder Unexpectedly Quits" appears repeatedly 20 to 20 seconds.
2) Finder Menu Bar is desappear, i can't get acess to any folders.
3) I can't acess the "Trash." Â
* Note: I create another account and in this new account the Finder / Finder Menu Bar and Trash works perfectly. But i want to try to solve my problem on my actual account.Â
* Note: Before this Problem appears i installed the WineSkin app, and then i recieve this kind of issues:
1) I "catch" the "Kernel Panic Box" twice. (At the moment this one is solved)
2) I was stuck on the Login Screen. (This one is solved, also)
3) Now i tried lot of solution's from this forum, no success

When I open DockSwitcher, it vanishes from the dock (quits itself?) after about 5 seconds. Even when it's there, dropping one of those zip files on it does nothing. I have a feeling this might be because I've tinkered around with those dock files, so now it's all messed up.

I recently bought a used Macbook Pro (A1212). I received it with no battery (on the way), and a dead harddrive (booted to folder question mark). I replaced the hard drive with a new one and tried booting up the DVD. When pressing option during startup, I'm given the option to boot the dvd. I click on it and I can hear the DVD whirr for a couple minutes, apple logo shows up, then a loading circle on the bottom of it, eventually the logo turns into a Deny Circle. What could this mean? The DVD is in tip top condition.

Mail started quitting a few days ago, just after it starts. I tried everything that has been suggested for these cases: removed beta version of Safari, remove Growl and any other third parties, remove the preferences file (.plist) and the user/Library/Mail folder. Nothing works! I set up another account on my Mac and Mail works there! I tried to use the new files that Mail generated for this new account for the old account but I couldn't make Mail to run.

For the past few days, whenever I try to open itunes, a dialogue box pops up and says, "The application iTunes quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it using a new dmg, but it still says this. I also tried uninstalling Flip4Mac and taking out the plug-ins from users/*user*/library/itunes/itunes plug-ins.

Just upgraded to 10.6 Snow Leopard. Awesome OS, but one thing bugs me: Since upgrading, whenever I activate my screensaver the default Flurry one appears for about 2 or 3 seconds, before immediately taking me to my locked screen window. I don't touch the mouse or keyboard or anything, it just refuses to show the screensaver for more than a couple seconds. I hit esc and it works for a bit longer, but soon enough displays the login window again. Has anyone had this problem after upgrading? It has been fine before (10.4, 10.5...up until now).

apologies if this has been answered else-where but Ive looked and found no solutions. My problem is that I cannot access network preferences. I can access system preferences and turn my airport on/off via the toolbar, but I cannot actually open the network preferences without system preferences unexpectedly quitting. I have to access my universities VPN to read an e-book for an exam, so this is quite frustrating right now,

When I try to launch iChat, the icon bounces once, then I am informed that "The application iChat quit unexpectedly." Clicking the "Relaunch" button twice gives me the option to "Reset and relaunch," but that does not help either.
iChat runs fine within another user account on the same machine.

I own a 15" screen Macbook pro running Mac OS X version 10.4.11 with a 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory - 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Recently when waking the computer from sleep, it makes the "waking from sleep noise", and the fan starts, but the screen stays black. This forces me shut it down. When it restarts, the error message is that the computer had to restart after Mac OS X quit unexpectedly. I'm usually using Garageband, iTunes and Firefox before putting it to sleep. I'm not sure where I've put the documentation I need for support from Apple!

this becomes specifically annoying when i'm in the middle of a conversation with someone and then one of my contacts attempts to send me a chat text message so it basically makes the whole app quit and interrupts my call

This has happened to my laptop once before and I had to replace my hard drive. First of all I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 with Safari 4.1.3. Basically I'll just be online, using Safari and suddenly it "quits unexpectedly." There's no one thing that I do that makes this happen either. The same thing was happening a while back and it began happening more an more frequently until my computer wasn't running and I had to replace my hard drive. Now its happening again!

Just yesterday Safari repeatedly malfunctioned when accessing secure (SSL?) site drop-down boxes while trying to pay utility bills online. The boxes drop down, the desired selection can be highlighted, but when the cursor is lifted, the change is NOT made, the beach ball spins, Safari quits. Every time. On several different sites. Data can be entered in the blank spaces, but using the drop-down boxes results in a stall, then quit.
These type of tasks were accomplished as recently as the day before. Other Safari functions (browsing, youtube etc) seem to work. Firefox works in all areas.
