Software :: Failed Install Of 10.5.6 - Doesn't Recognize Software
May 25, 2009
I attempted to install Leopard 10.5.6 onto my MacBook. It got about halfway through the installation process, but then said there was a problem and it said to eject the disc and restart. Now, I was able to restart the laptop, but it took a while and I get to a blank desktop with just the icons on the bottom of the screen (though they don't work if I click on them). I am going to get a new install disc, but I just tested the old one again and nothing happens, it just makes sounds. When I get the new disc, is there a way to restart my computer so that it automatically installs the software? Or perhaps it does that automatically if there's a Mac OS X disc in there?

I was running 10.5.8 on both my white MacBook and Intel iMac 20," then I finally received the copy of Snow Leopard which I bought from Amazon. I decided to install it on my MacBook first to make sure the install would be successful before I upgraded my iMac, which has my important work stuff on it. The install was a success on the MacBook and after it was fully upgraded and updated, I simply opened "About This Mac" to verify the installation, opened Safari, browsed around for a minute, then proceeded to check out the new dock and airport menu features. After just a few minutes of playing around with it, I decided it was a legitimate installation, closed the MacBook, left it plugged into the power source, and walked to the other room to begin the upgrade onto my iMac. I left home for about an hour and once I had returned, the iMac installation was complete and it was running like a dream. After messing around on the iMac for a little while I decided to make sure the MacBook was still good to go. When I opened the Macbook up, all I saw was a blank screen. I assumed it was some sort of power-saver issue, because sometimes the screen doesn't like to come on right away when I open it up. My first instinct was to move my finger around on the trackpad and press some keyboard keys, which always wakes it up when this happens. Nothing seemed to be working, so at this point I pushed the power button and it proceeded to boot. As it began to boot I heard some sort of CLICKING from the HD, followed by a flashing folder with a question mark on the screen.
I assumed it was some sort of HD failure so I booted to the Snow Leopard install disk, ran Disk Utility and Startup disk, and my Mac COULD NOT FIND the HD - all it showed was the CD-ROM drive and Network Startup. I tried to reboot a few more times and almost gave up. It kept clicking at startup and I was thinking about the little magnetic arms in the HD. I thought they might be jammed in the HD for some reason. At this point, I didn't know what to do. So, as it was booting up again with the plain grey backdrop, as a last resort, pretending I was the Fonz or something, I physically whacked the area on my MacBook near the power button where the sound of the clicks was coming from. AS SOON as I did that, the clicking stopped and a few seconds later the APPLE ICON appeared... instead of that dreaded question mark folder icon! The MacBook started booting up back to it's upgraded self again! Finally I was back at the desktop, and with a sigh of relief, began typing this forum. Now, my question is WHAT THE @#$% HAPPENED?? And how on Earth did smacking it one actually fix it? Is this problem related to the recent installation of Snow Leopard or just my MacBook dying? (It is 2 years old) If anyone has any ideas as to what caused this, and how I can prevent this situation from happening in the future.

I wonder if you can suggest something? My MBP currently doesn't recognise the printer I have (HP OfficeJet 6210, which has worked before with this computer). In fact the list of printer models under "add printer" is now empty. So it doesn't detect any printer and I can't suggest any printer for it to detect. I tried reinstalling the "printers" part of Snow Leopard but it didn't change anything. What would be the best thing to do?

I have a snowball microphone with USB connection. It was working fine until today. The light still lights up. I've tried the different switches at the back. I've restarted my system, plugged it in after I started Garage Band or before but not snowball in the system preferences or in the audio preferences of Garage Band.

I've started installing XP onto my iMac, and it's at the screen where it asks what partition it should be installed on. In order to select a partition, I'm supposed to use the arrow keys on my keyboard, but my keyboard doesn't seem to be recognized by the installer, as well as other keyboards I've tried. So now I can't install windows. How can I get it to work?

I have a Macbook Pro which is almost three years old.Applications like iLife and iWorks were installed on the computer long before there was the Mac Ap Store. These apps, and others on my computer, do not show up as Instaled in the App Store so I can't update them unless I use the old Software Update or the vendor's site.I don't want to purchase the apps again but is there any way to "register" these apps so the app store knows they are on my computer?

my GF and a glass of Wine. Cat hits wine and wine hits MBP. The Mac shut off instantly, we acted pretty quick and mopped up and turned upside down. I then took back off and over the course of the next 5 days I have stripped it down completely including the Key board and cleaned as best as I could. I've put it all back together and it starts up, a reassuring tone rings out, then apple sign appears with a loading bar beneath, this takes a while then it reaches the Lion log in page.It still recognizes me, or rather my name as the user but refuses my password which I know is correct. The keyboard isn't backlit but keys are typing something (can't see characters, just dots). Screen brightness works. No back light on keys although this may be normal at this point, not sure.Â

Not sure if you can help on this or not. I bought an ibook g3 that was running 10.2 and went ahead and got 10.4 discs for it. I went ahead and began the install.I got to disc 2 and it messed up. Now each time I boot the ibook it wants disc 2, when I give it disc 2, it gets to disc 3 and messes up again and can't get passed it. Is there any way I can completely restart the install process or roll back to 10.2?

Have a iMac G5 with built in BT. I used it downstairs yesterday and took it back to the spare room where it usually is used. Fired it up today and I find that the BT mouse is fine BUT it ignores the keyboard. I tried; Replacing batteries. Checked that the suspect keyboard worked on my mac mini (it did). Tried my other BT keyboard on the iMac same problem. So, why does it recognise the mouse but not the keyboard? I do not have a USB Keyboard, so now I cannot Log in to fix it! I am guessing that the pairing has gone BUT surely it would simply see the keyboard as a new one and start setting it up. Something is stopping keyboards working with BT, very strange - could a loose BT module cause this? Or will I have to buy a USB Keyboard now to use my iMac?

I recently installed an LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray and HD DVD drive into the second bay of my Mac Pro. This in itself was an absolute pain, as I had to enable AHCI for Windows Vista by using a modified mbr because I was using one of the ODD_SATA ports on the motherboard which Windows doesnt' "see" cause it runs in legacy mode. Everything there went completely fine, as now I am running in AHCI mode and I can see the LG drive and I can play CD's and regular DVD's via that drive in Windows Vista. However, the problem now is that when I insert a Blu-Ray or an HD DVD, Windows doesn't even recognize that there is media in the drive. It says there is no disc inside. When I boot in OS X, I can clearly see both the HD DVD and Blu_ray (although I can't play it or do anything with it).

my mac book pro is not recognizing my WD 500 GB external hardrive. I checked and double checked to make sure the external was mac compatible before I bought : and it was. It also is not recongizing an WD external hardrive I borrowed from a co-worker. Here is what I have done and checked so far.Â
- I checked to see if the externals worked on other Mac Pros( just to double check mac compatibility)-Â they showed up on on 4 different Mac books.
- I checked to see if there was something wrong my usb ports. So I incerted my 4 GB flash drive in the USB port, and then my co-workers 4GB Flashdrive- My computer recognized both the devices.
- My computer was very full ( that is why I bought a bigger hardrive to back up my files) so I thought maybe there just wasnted even enough free space for my computer to recongize the devices. So I freed up 70GB of hardrive space on my mac book. - still nothing.
- I also checked to make sure I had the suggested software updates to run the drive, before I bought it. Â

Lion is working perfectly and I'm having no issues. why the third laptop can't see the printer online?
