Software :: Connecting To Wireless Internet - WEP Password
Dec 28, 2008
I just got a mcabook for christmas and when I tried connecting to my wireless network at home I am asked for a WEP password. I'm unsure of what this is or where to find it.

In order to make my wireless internet network secure, I added a password to it today. Every other computer in the house, as well as my XBox 360, is able to connect to the internet using the password that I set up. For some reason, when I try to connect to my Macbook, it tells me that the password is wrong, yet it works with the other 3 computers in my house. What am I missing? Do I need to change my settings on Airport? My wireless router is obviously working so what do I need to do?

This is my first ever mac that I've owned given to my by a friend, so excuse my simplicity. It's a G4 and I have a wireless internet access at home through Time Warner Cable. It doesn't seem to have an airport card. What is the easiest way to connect to wireless? What additional cards would I need to buy?

To make a long story short, I moved to my girlfriend's place yesterday and I plugged in my iMac (20" 2.16 Ghz Intel C2D, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon X1600/256MB VRAM) and I've been trying to connect to the Internet. Now, I couldn't have my iMac plugged directly were the router is located. Back at home, I never had any problems since I had my ethernet cable plugged into my iMac.
So this was my first time trying to connect via wireless or Airport (if that's even the same thing). Basically, I choose the network to log in and typed in the WEP key. I didn't get an error message so I assumed the key was fine. Also, it says that I'm connected to the network I'm on. However, when I try to get on Safari or MSN or something says I'm not connected to the Internet.

I am using a Ralink wireless usb dongle, and I can pick up multiple networks in my area.I can connect to a local WPA2 network, using the shared key, but can't connect to the internet in Safari or any other program.I used to be able to access the internet with this very same hardware, using what I thought was the same software, though with an open network. When I look in network prefs at the device, called "ethernet eng3" (I think), it says "connected, but may not work because of a self-assigned IP", or something to that effect.

I have a Power Mac G4 dual 876Mhz MDD ,recently bought. I am trying to connect to the internet and am having no problem when I connect an ethernet cable to a netgear Wireless router that shares the connection. However as I have an airport express base station, would it be possible to connect the airport express base station to the powermac via ethernet and then connect to the internet wirelessly via the netgear router and airport express base station?

For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port. I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive. BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac. Still have full wireless signal. preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet. As soon as turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again. And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before. That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

this is a major problem for me. I just installed ubuntu on my mac via boot camp, and I can't find how to set up wireless internet! Once, after installing windows, the same problem occurred. I'm not sure whether this version doesn't support airport (ubuntu v10.04.1) or I need the snow leopard drivers (but I can't because it's a .exe file).

currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).
Question:
1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?
2) If I need another password, how and where do I set it,

I have a Mac PowerBook G4, a Sony PSP 2004 and a wireless internet access SpeedTouchF3629 and I cant access internet with my PSP. I already got to the webpage of PSP registration and made all the steps they asked me to do. When I make the download of the software PSNDownloaderSetup.exe, it is not identified by my PowerBookG4 as a executable program. I tried before I downloaded this software with the PSP in the Network settings, I made all the steps to the installation and it always said: "There has been a connection error. It has not been possible to establish a connection to the access point. Check the security settings for the network and try it again". So I think, or maybe I am wrong!, that if I can make this software work, maybe I can access internet wireless with my PSP?

My Imac will not connect to the internet. I ran the network diagnostics and checked the network in system preferences and still it won't work. I already fixed the IP adress problem but still... It's showing, in network diagnostics, that internet and server are red. I already rebooted the server but the problem persists. I'm a mac user and have been for almost a decade and this has never happened.

I just bought wireless for my room, but it obviously just uses my Mac address and therefore I cannot get wireless on any of my other devices. Is there a way I can get my Xbox to connect to the wireless? Can I make my computer become a router and give it a MAC address for anything connected to it?

so my University uses the lovely Cisco VPN Client. Easy to get it working, not a big deal, but it annoys me that I need to start it manually every time I switch wifi networks and such. Is there a way to automate this? I want to connect to the VPN whenever the Airport logs into one of the University's wifi networks. The Cisco client also supports command-line mode, so I could write a script for that. But the big question is: is there a "connected to wifi network" event I can hook into using AppleScript or something.

I have an eMac 1Ghz with 10.3.9 on it and I just bought a new Lexmark Wi-Fi Printer. I have no Extreme card, just a Netgear Wired/Wireless router that's obviously connected to my eMac via CAT5 cable. I set up the printer for wireless, hoping my eMac would use the router as a card-substitute type deal. Well it doesn't. Cannot connect as if it were not there.

I have an Airport card in my eMac. My eMac sees it OK. I have an iMac connected to a wireless router. My eMac sees the router, but when I type in the password to connect I get a cannot establish connection error. THERE IS AN ERROR JOINING THE AIRPORT NETWORK " xxxxxxxxxxxxxx " (xxxxxxx being the name of my router. Just realised that even though the eMac sees the router it is getting no signal, all lines in airport icon in Menu Bar are grey and not black as when there is a signal of some strength.

I'm an iBook G4 user. I've had my computer for about 4 years and never had any problems, but in the past two weeks, I've been experiencing a lot of difficulty with my internet.
The problem's got to be with airport, because I'm connected right now with an ethernet cable and am having no issues.
Using my airport, I can still usually connect to the internet-- in fact, when I first connect to a wireless network, I have strong signal strength-- but I lose my internet connection after just a few minutes.
When I click on "Open internet connect," I can often reconnect to the network, but then I get the error message "out of range of network" and am booted off again.
This has happened to me on two separate internet networks-- both in my home and at the library-- so I think the problem is with my computer, not the signal.
There's not any physical object blocking the signal as far as I can see, and I've been able to use this wireless network in the past without any problems. (It's my partner's network and is and password protected, so it's not like I'm stealing it from someone next door or something.)
I'm running Mac OS X.
I've looked at getting airport express, but I don't want to pay money for something that may or may not fix the problem.

I have had non stop trouble with my internet connection. I use Tiscali in the UK via a Netgear router and an Airport Extreme (the UFO shaped one). I now cannot access the web again and have been told by Tiscali that they do not provide technical help for either Apple or Netgear. A couple of questions. What is the benefit of using a router and airport extreme? Who is the best broadband provider for mac in the UK?

I have G5 that I am running leopard on. I have an airpot extreme network setup in the house. The G5 shows its connected to the network but will not open internet pages. It was working fine a few days ago. I also have a Macbook that works great on the network and can connect to the internet. All the network settings seem to be the same for the G5 and the Macbook. Literally one day it worked and the next it did not. Is there a setting I am missing somewhere that would cause it not to be able to open internet pages?

I was able to get this machine to connect to my wireless home network, yet I still get the "Server cannot be found" error. Have tried with the old IE program, then I downloaded an older version of Safari on my iMac and transferred it via disk to the PMG4. The safari loaded fine, a window opens, yet it will still not connect. There must be a setting I'm missing - can anybody tell me what it is?
