Software :: Cannot Shut Down Parallels 3.0 On Mac OS X
May 30, 2009Windows has locked up and I cannot shut it down. If I shut down the entire computer, I only shut down the Mac side, not the Windows side. CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work.

View 2 RepliesI just downloaded the latest update to Parallels. I shut down Parallels before running the update, and I even did a reboot of the computer. And yet every time I run the update program it keeps telling me to "shut down these running and suspended virtual machines" and refers to "My Boot Camp"Like I said, I rebooted the computer first. There are no virtual machines running. Zero, zilch, nada. So why in the ******* is Parallels telling me that there is? "My Boot Camp" isn't even a VM that I use

i'm abit ocd with stuff on my computer, so stuff like this really bothers me. i had parallels one my computer for a little while whilst i needed windows. now i don't i got rid of the partition and uninstalled parallels. but, .exe files and some other files still show the parallels logo, as if it wants to open them in parallels.
is there any way i can change this? i've removed everything i can think of in preferences, application support, startup items, receipts, etc to do with parallels but to no avail.
I have Parallels 3 installed, mostly to run MS Money. Last night I installed Snow Leopard, unaware that Parallels 3 is not compatible. It appears that I need to go out and buy Parallels 4 as that will work with Snow Leopard.
My question is will all my data within Windows remain if I install 4 or will it be a completely new Windows? And if so, how do I go in and retrieve my MS Money data as I can no longer access it with Parallels 3.
I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).
Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.
I am getting a pop up "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?".
The one we get, if pressed the power button to switch it off?. The problem is not consistent and mostly I get if left inactive for some time(random). I have run the hardware test(installer DVD and pressing D) without any issue found.
I just bought a brand new 2.5ghz 15 inch MBP. I need to run windows (unfortunately on it for a few work applications and need some advice. I bought the latest version of parallels so I don't have to reboot to switch between apps.
However I wanted to avoid buying another copy of windows XP as I have a desktop (from Dell) with a license I will no longer be using. I don't have the OEM disc anymore (its an old computer) but if I obtain a retail windows XP install disc (with SP2 already included - its a friends who IS using his key that came with the disc), and then use the serial key from my old dell/XP computer, will this work?
I've got a 2,1, 2.0 GHz MB with 2GB RAM, and I'm thinking about adding more RAM. I believe the limit my machine can address is 3.0 GB, but I found a set of benchmarks that gave dramatic improvements with 4GB on a test running Photoshop CS3 and Parallels: http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Ma...ory_Benchmarks
I'm just wondering why this is? If there is a virtual machine does it evade the 3GB limit, and if so, if I'm doing a lot of work in Windows on Parallels would it be worth going for the extra GB?
I was thinking about running parallels with XP alongside my other apps. Likely to have four users logged on and perhaps at least six apps open along with parallels running XP. Will my 4GB be enough or will the system get bogged down? Be interested to find out people experiences of using parallels and how the performance is on a 3.06Ghz imac.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new iMac last night, I am finally leaving the PC world. I need to install a OS for parallels since I have alot of PC programs I need to run. I have ran thru the paralells set up and installed a windows xp sp1 home edition cd when prompted but it will not load properly. The XP install disc is a disk I got with an older Dell laptop. And it says for distribution with Dell computers only. I starts to load, I input my activation code and it starts to install.
The first few times it got hung up saying that it is installing and will take 39 minutes to complete but just sat there for hours. Now its missing some line of code. O well I have to get a new copy of XP I guess. Here is the issue, I must have XP with nothing new then SP2. When I run sp3 my CAD program (softplan) cannot print to scale. They said its a problem with sp3 and I would have to upgrade V14 to fix this issue. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get this current XP sp1 to load, or can I get an XP sp2. Everything I find is preloaded sp3.
I got the program parallel 5 with my iMac and I as wondering what the advantages or disadvantages to running windows. I do have Windows 7 OS. But I don't really have any programs for windows that I have to have that Mac OS X won't do. So I guess is it worth it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy friend is using a Power Mac G5 and it will not shut down. When shut down is selected, it gets to a blue screen with the rotating progress wheel, or whatever, that is seen on start up. It will stick to this screen until the computer is forced off by holding down the power button. Also, occasionally, when the computer is powered on, the fan runs at full speed and nothing happens until it is forced off and turned on again. I'm guessing these two issues might be related. Any suggestions on what to do? We have tried unplugging all USB devices.

View 11 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, my Mac Pro wants to shut down all the time. Every 10 mins or so the message, "Do you want to shut down etc. etc." comes up with the usual options of Restart/Sleep//ShutDown or Cancel. I click on cancel and it goes away for 10 mins, sometimes less, sometimes more.
No idea what's causing this at all. I normally keep it turned on all the time but I went away for the weekend so I shut everything down in the office - I know it got pretty cold in there (maybe even freezing) so I'm worried I've done some damage due to the cold?
Nothing has been installed but I have no idea where to check or what to do now. It's my main computer - I use it for work all the time and would be at a loss if I needed to send it away so I'm hoping someone will have heard of this and have a solution
I;ve searched around a lot and all I can see is people having trouble to get their macbook's to shut down - this is the other way around!
Oh, Mac Pro, 4 quad intel, 4gb ram I think and 750gb hard drive. The power is connected to a UPS but that doesn't seem at fault.
Update:
It seems to be only doing it when I'm away for a while - maybe when it's trying to sleep or shut down the hard drive? I did have it set to Never for going to sleep and I have changed that last night so it's not the Sleep side of things. I will try unticking the Put the hard disk to sleep now and see if that makes a difference. I also see the option "Allow power button to sleep the computer" so if the previous attempt doesn't work I'll try that - I suppose that will identify whether it's the power button or not
My early 08 MBP has seemed to have lost the ability to do the above 3 functions. Pressing the power button does not bring up the shut down/restart/sleep menu and going through the menu bar and clicking "shut down" does nothing either. Pressing cmd + shift + Q does nothing when it used to bring up the log out option. It's only been like this the past few days, I noticed when I was prompted to reboot for the SMC update but OSX did nothing after I clicked the reboot button. The only way to shut down or reboot is to perform a forced shut down.
I've repaired disk permissions, repaired the disk, reset the SMC and the PRAM but nothing has worked.
I was unsure where to post this as it could be either OSX or hardware that is the problem. I am currently unable to shutdown my 2008 Alu iMac. Everytime I shut it down, it restarts instead.
After a little bit of searching the forums/google, I understand that this may be something to do with a driver or application that is refusing to close properly - but have no idea how to try and identify what may be causing it.
I love my mac, and I know people swear by them but lately, things have just been falling apart on my mac. For starters, note the weird graphics on the dock in the attachment. Secondly, my mac doesn't always shut down, it sometimes stalls on the blue screen with the spiral thingy and other times it just stalls on a blank desktop. Then I get other strange, irregular problems from time to time, I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or if I should just start again. I have a RevA MBA, running Snow Leopard.

I had it in to a Mac store where they told me I had serious hard drive damage (? hardly used, may have been dropped with out my knowledge..) They were able to fix it, and its been great for over 10 months now.Today I was in my yahoo msgr account and wanted to open safari. My screen went grey and told me to shut down. Bad sign right?I cant seem to find anything that is a panic file in my history, but in my logs, for that crash it did say= Reason: Data stall on channel 7 while on a call, and then it lists a bunch about various signal strengths

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook G4 running OX 10.4.11. Recently I have had an intermittent problem where it won't shut down when I choose "Shut Down". The little warning box ("really want to shut down?" 2 minute warning, etc.) comes up, but whether I tell it to shut down immediately, or wait for the 2 minutes, the result is that same: it just ignores the command altogether. It doesn't freeze up or anything; it just ignores the command.
So far, I've been able to log out, then successfully choose shut down from the resulting login window, so that's been a workaround, but that shouldn't be my only shutdown option.
My new macbook pro 13inch is taking forever to shut down. When i clicked the shutdown button, everything goes on as per normal till it reaches the white screen with the roller and it just stays there forever, draining battery till I force shut it down.
