Applications :: How Much RAM Enough To Run Parallels On XP
Mar 31, 2009
I was thinking about running parallels with XP alongside my other apps. Likely to have four users logged on and perhaps at least six apps open along with parallels running XP. Will my 4GB be enough or will the system get bogged down? Be interested to find out people experiences of using parallels and how the performance is on a 3.06Ghz imac.

What is the difference between Parallels Desktop 6 Switch to Mac Edition and Parallels 6?
Is the speed the same for both?

I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).
Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.

i'm abit ocd with stuff on my computer, so stuff like this really bothers me. i had parallels one my computer for a little while whilst i needed windows. now i don't i got rid of the partition and uninstalled parallels. but, .exe files and some other files still show the parallels logo, as if it wants to open them in parallels.
is there any way i can change this? i've removed everything i can think of in preferences, application support, startup items, receipts, etc to do with parallels but to no avail.

I have Parallels 3 installed, mostly to run MS Money. Last night I installed Snow Leopard, unaware that Parallels 3 is not compatible. It appears that I need to go out and buy Parallels 4 as that will work with Snow Leopard.
My question is will all my data within Windows remain if I install 4 or will it be a completely new Windows? And if so, how do I go in and retrieve my MS Money data as I can no longer access it with Parallels 3.

Just got an iMac and need to run some of my old Windows stuff. I've gathered that Parallels is the best virtual solution, but I'm confused: Do you need Bootcamp in order to run Parallels, or can you just run Parallels?

Which is better to use? I understand you don't need to reboot to use Parallels or Vmware but is it fully functional? And do either of these kill the performance of the system?
And what's the difference between Parallels and Vmware?

I just installed Parallels and am having trouble installing Windows XP. I get a message saying that it can find the ASMS file, even though I checked and its definitely on the installation cd.
I tried saving the cd on my desktop and manually typing in the location, but that doesnt work. Unless im typing the wrong location in?

I am getting ready to finally "make the switch" to Mac and I need a Virtualization solution to ease the transition for my wife and let me run my work environments as well. I have been considering VirtualBox [URL] which is free for personal use, as well as VMWare Fusion 3, and Parallels. The satisfaction rating seems to be lower with the Parallels users (maybe disgruntled on charging folks for 2 upgraded within 2 months of each other) so I have almost ruled it out, but I still need to decide.
The big thing here is that I need this software from day one to make sure my wife doesn't have to miss a beat during the transition. I'd rather not be reinstalling Windows _again_ in 2 weeks to switch solutions. Anybody have any experience with VirtualBox on Mac and can maybe share some of the shortcomings versus VMWare Fusion or Parallels? Is there good reason fork over the cash and go with Fusion or Parallels?

So, I recently installed Parallels 5 on my MacBook and then I installed Windows 7 as a virual machine. For some reason, I cannot get Windows 7 to run in "aero" mode.
The MacBook I installed it on is a year or two old (it's a Black MacBook). It's got a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I believe the sceps are enough to support "aero" mode.
In the virtual machine configure menu. I've selected Processors = 1 and Mani Memory = 1200 MB (top of recommended).
When trying to adjust my settings in Windows 7, there is a message at the bottom of he personalization screen with a link to "Troubleshoot problems with transparency and other aero effects". When I click the link, it runs a test to detect problems. After the test is complete, it tells me that Desktop Window Manager is disabled.

This afternoon I have been repeatedly trying to install a copy of Windows XP on Parallels 5 onto my Macbook. Parallels is unlocked, registered and is not a demo version, and neither is XP. The installation setup gets past the first part (on the blue and black screens) and to the second part (which actually looks like the XP interface). It always says "Setup will complete in approximately: 39 minutes" and it always freezes at "Setup will complete is approximately: 36 minutes".

Two days ago I backed up my MBP with Super Duper and then did a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Installed VMware Fusion.
Installed my Mac applications including Unison. All of the RAR files are associated with XP on Parallels!
The only thing I can think of is that I had Parallels installed on my computer before and somehow when I had my Super Duper drive attached to my new install it picked up something from that?
How do I get rid of all this stuff? How do I set certain things like .exe fies to unknown (or at the very least Fusion)?

I keep getting an error message that says "Runing out of Disk Space" withing parallels when I'm using XP. My Intel IMAC has 200GB free HDD space with 2bg ram. Is there a way of increasing HDD space in parallels 4.0 when I already have an operating system installed? by the way my image is XP SP3.

Which do you prefer and why? I am going to be running one on the imac I am about to buy. I don't wanna fool with heavy burning on my MacBook, but I will get down to it on iMac. I have pretty much given up on finding a good decryption program for mac.. many headaches later I have decided to run something so I can use my windows programs to back up my dvd's.
When I put windows on mac, in theory I open it up to the same crap windows has viruses/spy-adware etc. What do you use to keep your mac safe and sound when running windows?

I have a Unibody Macbook and was wondering which one would be a better choice to do occasional gaming. using Bootcamp since I have tried it before and didn't like the whole restart the computer after done playing the game.
I heard crossover is great for gaming but Parallels 5 came out recently so was wondering if it has any improvements.

Parallels 5 on 10.6.2 has been extremely slow to launch for me. The icon will bounce in the dock for about minute, then hang for another a minute or two, then finally launch. Tried reinstalling, repairing permissions, etc. However, it seems that disabling the spotlight fixes the issue, so it's apparently related to that...but I don't want to have to disable spotlight.

I had Parallels 5, to run the odd extra OS for giggles and sometimes practical reasons. At work they have VMWare for the odd XP program. Eventually, they both annoyed me with their bloated nature. I dunno about you guys but I downloaded VirtualBox, and I am very impressed with it to say it's free. With Parallels, running Windows XP with 1GB of ram, my fans would blow franticly. The same on VirtualBox, and everything is smooth, it is so lightweight, has all the features and supports OS's a lot more than Parallels and VMWare.

So I've installed a few applications here and there that haven't really worked like I wanted them to. I recently installed Parallels and I hated it. I deleted everything I could find but when I search "Parallels" in my finder a bunch of other stuff appears. Is that all related to Parallels, is it okay to delete them all, or not? The only reason it bothers me is because my computer used to shut down literally 5 times faster than it has been since I install Parallels. I think maybe that was the problem and if I delete everything I can find related to Parallels it will shutdown faster.

Before I installed Parallels 5, I had a 2.4ghz 13" MBP w/ 4GB RAM that was dual-booting Windows XP. I then installed Parallels, and instead of installing an OS from a CD (I have Win7 fresh install CD), I decided to instead install Windows XP onto my VM from Bootcamp since my specs aren't as fast and I heard Win7 may lag a bit more than XP.
My question is, in the future if I want to install Win7, what would happen in these 2 scenarios:
1. I install Win7 onto my bootcamp partition (would my parallels copy of windows become corrupt/unusable?)
2. I install Win7 onto VM via Parallels

I'm very new to macs and I've been able to purchase most of the applications I need to use in mac formats (quickbooks, office etc.) but there are some things that still need windows like all of the software for my Garmin units as well as some marine navigation software. My question is rather then having to purchase more software, and give more money to MS, can I use a copy of windows that came with one of my old dell or vaio laptops to run windows on parallels so I can run those few programs i need?

I have been thinking of purchasing Parallels. I have some games that play great in Windows 7 via Bootcamp on my iMac (see sig) but play horribly in Parallels. I understand that BootCamp is the far superior solution, but I do enjoy the ability to switch between Snow Leopard and Win7 on the fly. My question is really around whats holding me back. I am using the trial version of Parallels. Is it Parallels, my RAM (I have 2GB alotted to Win7) or because it emulates a video card I believe? These aren't intense games... things like Icewind Dale and Diablo II.

I'm ready to upgrade my MacBook 13" late 2006 model to a new 15 inch pro, and realize that, especially in the college environment where many professors demand windows, I should run it somehow. I've been doing extensive research for the last hour on the best way to run it, however I'm in a complete deadlock. Some people say just do boot camp, but I don't mind paying up to $100 extra if it will really be much smoother. Even when I try to compare the differences between VMware and Parallels (the latest versions of both), I don't see anything hugely significant. Plus, I see just as many complaints about both of them (I'm reading 1-star HORROR STORIES on amazon of each one), and really, really just want a smooth experience. So, my dear MacRumors friends, I come to you for advice. Which of the three programs do you recommend?

I finally made the switch from PC to Mac buy selling my HP laptop and desktop computers and buying the new MacBook Pro. However, I have licenses for Creative Suite 4 for Windows and still need to run it on my Mac using Boot Camp and/or Parallels until I can afford to jump to CS5 for Mac (this MBP took a big chunk of my cash). I'd like to run Windows using Boot Camp AND Parallels - Boot Camp when I need all system resources and Parallels when I need to hop over to Windows to type a Word document or something quick (got Office 2007 for Windows too).
Can I use both Boot Camp and Parallels with one serial number for Windows 7? If so, how do I install? Would I install Windows on Boot Camp or Parallels first? If anyone has some guidance for installing one copy of Windows 7 on both applications
