OS X :: Unable To Click Anything - Force Shut Down
Oct 1, 2009this is pretty strange and I'm wondering if this has occured to anybody. I wasn't able to click anything and the only way to shut down was to force shut down. I found it odd that iStat was working though. I'll stop because a picture is worth 1000 words

Jul 29, 2010I have a 15" MacBook Pro unibody, when I click shut down, to turn it off, it just restarts! It doesn't shut down. The only way to turn it off is to hold down the power button for a few seconds. Even then, sometimes when I do that, it will randomly power up without touching it at all.

Jun 5, 2009start up the computer and all is fine it is really cool how you dont see the black screen or anything it is all smooth looking with the setup boxes but when it gets to where you should have the normal desktop this wierd program comes up instead. i cant see the start button or my computer or anything it is like some kind of other program on top of it that i cant quit. i have tried everything but when i click shut down it just shuts down the whole computer not getting me to my desktop.

Aug 9, 2010I had to dissassemble my wireless Mighty Mouse to clean it properly, as the trackball was unable to scroll up and down. As I had cleaned the trackball, I attached the two internal cables to their respective "slots" again and assembled the mouse.
Now my right button does the same as the left button (right click = left click). I tried dissassembling the mouse again, but I cannot see what I could have done wrong. After all, there are only two cables to attach and de-attach inside it.
Hardware :: Mighty Mouse Not Working Fine / Right Click Acts As Left Click
Feb 12, 2007I just bought a mighty mouse, happy as I was, plugged it in and started my ibook running OS X 10.3.9.I know the mighty mouse shouldn't have full functionality (as the software delivered with it is >10.4.2).The problem is that the right click doesn't work right. When I try to right click it sometimes takes the right click, sometimes takes it as a left click (which is extremely annoying in firefox or finder).
I have SteerMouse (I'm a windows/linux user too) installed but when I de�nstalled it the problem remained.
When I plugged the mighty mouse in my pc (at that time running windows) right click just worked.When using a cheap mouse (from pleomax) the right click on the ibook (with Steermouse installed) works all the time.
I find this al really confusing. Seems like it can't be the hardware because it works on windows, but it can't be the software because another mouse does work.
I noticed that when right clicking at the total right side near the "expose-button" (not a position my fingers lay naturally) right click works all the time. I don't hope this is normal?

Apr 20, 2012I'll try and click on a link and nothing, then I click bookmrks in the menu bar, it works, then i can go back and be to click on the link and it'll work.

Apr 7, 2009 I am getting a pop up "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?".
The one we get, if pressed the power button to switch it off?. The problem is not consistent and mostly I get if left inactive for some time(random). I have run the hardware test(installer DVD and pressing D) without any issue found.

May 3, 2009so for some reason i cant click on my icons, u know the Macintosh HD and folders on desktop. Basically icant click on anything on the desktop and i cant drag anything to the desktop but i can drag things to the trash. everything else is clickable except anything on the desktop

Apr 2, 2007My friend is using a Power Mac G5 and it will not shut down. When shut down is selected, it gets to a blue screen with the rotating progress wheel, or whatever, that is seen on start up. It will stick to this screen until the computer is forced off by holding down the power button. Also, occasionally, when the computer is powered on, the fan runs at full speed and nothing happens until it is forced off and turned on again. I'm guessing these two issues might be related. Any suggestions on what to do? We have tried unplugging all USB devices.

Dec 15, 2008For some reason, my Mac Pro wants to shut down all the time. Every 10 mins or so the message, "Do you want to shut down etc. etc." comes up with the usual options of Restart/Sleep//ShutDown or Cancel. I click on cancel and it goes away for 10 mins, sometimes less, sometimes more.
No idea what's causing this at all. I normally keep it turned on all the time but I went away for the weekend so I shut everything down in the office - I know it got pretty cold in there (maybe even freezing) so I'm worried I've done some damage due to the cold?
Nothing has been installed but I have no idea where to check or what to do now. It's my main computer - I use it for work all the time and would be at a loss if I needed to send it away so I'm hoping someone will have heard of this and have a solution
I;ve searched around a lot and all I can see is people having trouble to get their macbook's to shut down - this is the other way around!
Oh, Mac Pro, 4 quad intel, 4gb ram I think and 750gb hard drive. The power is connected to a UPS but that doesn't seem at fault.
Update:
It seems to be only doing it when I'm away for a while - maybe when it's trying to sleep or shut down the hard drive? I did have it set to Never for going to sleep and I have changed that last night so it's not the Sleep side of things. I will try unticking the Put the hard disk to sleep now and see if that makes a difference. I also see the option "Allow power button to sleep the computer" so if the previous attempt doesn't work I'll try that - I suppose that will identify whether it's the power button or not
OS X :: MBP Cannot Shut Down / Log Out Or Restart?
Jun 10, 2009My early 08 MBP has seemed to have lost the ability to do the above 3 functions. Pressing the power button does not bring up the shut down/restart/sleep menu and going through the menu bar and clicking "shut down" does nothing either. Pressing cmd + shift + Q does nothing when it used to bring up the log out option. It's only been like this the past few days, I noticed when I was prompted to reboot for the SMC update but OSX did nothing after I clicked the reboot button. The only way to shut down or reboot is to perform a forced shut down.
I've repaired disk permissions, repaired the disk, reset the SMC and the PRAM but nothing has worked.

Jan 26, 2010I was unsure where to post this as it could be either OSX or hardware that is the problem. I am currently unable to shutdown my 2008 Alu iMac. Everytime I shut it down, it restarts instead.
After a little bit of searching the forums/google, I understand that this may be something to do with a driver or application that is refusing to close properly - but have no idea how to try and identify what may be causing it.

Apr 6, 2010I love my mac, and I know people swear by them but lately, things have just been falling apart on my mac. For starters, note the weird graphics on the dock in the attachment. Secondly, my mac doesn't always shut down, it sometimes stalls on the blue screen with the spiral thingy and other times it just stalls on a blank desktop. Then I get other strange, irregular problems from time to time, I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or if I should just start again. I have a RevA MBA, running Snow Leopard.

May 29, 2010I have an I Book G4 and am not having much luck with it! I have had these grey shut down notices before, which led to freezing and loss of applications. I had it in to a Mac store where they told me I had serious hard drive damage (? hardly used, may have been dropped with out my knowledge..) They were able to fix it, and its been great for over 10 months now.Today I was in my yahoo msgr account and wanted to open safari. My screen went grey and told me to shut down. Jul 15, 2009I have an iBook G4 running OX 10.4.11. Recently I have had an intermittent problem where it won't shut down when I choose "Shut Down". The little warning box ("really want to shut down?" 2 minute warning, etc.) comes up, but whether I tell it to shut down immediately, or wait for the 2 minutes, the result is that same: it just ignores the command altogether. It doesn't freeze up or anything; it just ignores the command.
So far, I've been able to log out, then successfully choose shut down from the resulting login window, so that's been a workaround, but that shouldn't be my only shutdown option.

Mar 20, 2012I spilled Gatorade on my MacBook Pro and now if i don't touch the trackpad for about 4 seconds it asks if i want to shut down, go to sleep, or restart. If i don't hit cancel within about 5 seconds it will shut off. It will also shut off if i close it. The only way it stays on is if i hold down the command key.
