OS X :: Shut The Lid And Not Sleep!
Aug 10, 2010
I'm sure this is do-able as someone's mentioned it; Can you set a MBP so that it doesn't go to sleep when the lid's shut and it's connected to an external display? Got meself a Mini-DP to VGA adapter yesterday but it's off-putting watching streamed TV with the mac open next to it!

my friend owns a MacBook Pro and he has been having troubles with his new computer. He loves it all in all, but finds it frustrating that he can't turn the screen off without putting the computer to sleep. He says it's cause he wants his Adium away message to stay up for his friends, but can't find a way to do so, everyone I've asked has no clue.
Has Apple made a way to do this? Or is it this, as of now, cannot be done?

Someone please explain me in detail when it's best to put a MBP to sleep and when to shut it down.
Personally, I shut down every night and boot it the next morning.

I had some weird issue with my MBP last night. I let it running when I went to sleep so it could finish a download for me. The battery was fully charged, and I've done it in the past, and MBP would just go to stand by after it finished the download. But this time when I woke up it was turned off completey. I thought it was the battery, so I connected it to power to charge it again, and all of a sudden my MBP turned back on without me pushing any buttons or so. I than had to sign on again and when I checked the battery it wasn't empty, so MBP should have gone to sleep instead of shutting down.
After I signed on I was told that date and time had been set back to the original settings and I had troubles connecting to the internet. When it finally worked again after about 45 minutes I was asked to allow configd and mDNSresponder access, that also never happened before...
Is there anyone who could explain to me what happened or what might have caused this?

Could someone please explain to me why my computer is shutting down in sleep-mode. In addition, when it happens, the fan goes into hyperblow, which doesn't make sense because it would not be operating if the system were completely shut down. It acts like it is shut down but won't respond or wake up, etc. I re-loaded my system software per the Mac Store Genius' advice, but that didn't work. Is it possible that my power supply is going?

My iMac shut itself down last night while in sleep mode. It's rarely ever turned off. I cannot get it started today. I'm not the most tech saavy person but can follow instructions if someone could walk me through it.
Purchased in 2006 and has worked well until now. AppleCare has expired.

I have an Intel Imac G5 2.66 gHz 2 core duo running 10.6.3. I am unable to get it shut down or sleep. Choosing either results in the display blacking out, the fans run for about 1 second and then everything come back on as if nothing has happened. I've reset the Pram and Vram, disconnected all USB and Firewire devices, tried it with and without file sharing and Airport operating. A 'hard' shutdown with the power button works fine. I have checked for any firmware updates but mine is fine. This happened once before and clearing out some files from deleted apps cured the problem but it's back now.

Coming from Windows sometimes I hibernate the laptop but I have heard alot of people say with Mac's that they just put them to sleep. Firstly do you just do this for short periods as such as overnight? Also can your carry them around whilst on sleep or should they be shut down.

My 24in iMac is waking from sleep after about 5 seconds every time, as well as restarting itself after I shut down. This problem started early yesterday evening, and so I did the usual: resetting the SMC/PRAM/NVRAM with no luck. I checked console for messages and found lots of references to imagneto_user_agent (I'd installed iMagneto shortly before and then deleted it as it didn't seem to be working properly). With some help from another user I managed to delete all the hidden/locked folders and files connected with this app using a combination of Trash It and fiddling in Terminal.

I just bought MBP 17 i5 model a couple days ago from a local apple store(Keystone Mall). and I calibrated my battery yesterday. The thing is I know MBP should sleep when the battery is really low(running off reserve) then when the battery drains out, MBP should do the "safesleep" thing where it stores the current state of the machine so that upon turning the machine back on by supplying the power to it or after charging, MBP returns to the stored state.
But, when i was calibrating my battery, I did get the low battery warning(reserve battery blah blah) but then it drained down to 0 then the screen flickered(literally made a flicking sound) and went dead. When I got up in the morning I plug the adapter on and turned the MBP on and MBP just freshly boots.. rather than restoring the previous state..................

I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But! I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard. It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!

My macbook has developed a problem where when the lid is shut and the power is connected it wakes up from sleep and then goes back to sleep and repeats this process every 30-60 seconds.
What's weird is it doesn't wake from sleep and get stuck in this loop whenthe lid is open and the power is connected and I select sleep from the Apple menuwhen the lid is shut and the power is NOT connected and is running from the battery
I recently updated my mac to Snow Leopard and put in a new HDD and since doing so the problem has been occurring.

I have a first gen MBA 1.6, and recently (like two days ago) every time I close the lid it shuts down. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen more times than it doesn't. Booting it up after, a window tells me a kernel problem has occurred.
Sorry, no real knowledge of the underpinnings of how software works - so if any of you have ever experienced this, or have some tips or diagnoses, I will certainly be thankful for it.

so i've been having an issue with the double tap to hi-light any text i wish to copy. Such things as double tapping the URL bar to hi-light the whole url so i can just retype w/e site i want to go to. Every time i restart or turn off or my mbp goes to sleep and i reopen it, the double tap function resets. So i'm forced to go to the system preferences > trackpad> "double-click speed" to slowest in order to get my double tap to hi-light anything again. Is there something wrong with my mbp? Or is there a way i can save the settings when i put the double-click speed to slow so that it wont reset every time my mbp needs to be woken up or restarted?

I used to have a wireless Logitech mouse that drained batteries if you didn't turn it off manually every time you finished using it. So I'm wondering about the Magic Mouse...
1. Does the Magic Mouse automatically shut off when the iMac goes to sleep or is turned off?
2. If I leave the Magic Mouse on (while the computer is off) will it drain the batteries?
3. What do you recommend is best for the batteries and mouse? Should I turn it off every time I go out for the day?

I tried SMC resets and everything. The Macbook takes a charge and charges normally when it is asleep, or off. It will charge to the max (96%). Battery has 349h load cycles. Charges when asleep or off. As soon as I power on the laptop or wake it up, it will stop charging. Battery holds the normal charge I usually get (3ish hours). Tried a few pram and smc zaps. Battery charger is a Hong Kong knockoff. Battery inside is genuine. 2008 Aluminum Macbook. Cleaned magsafe and port with q-tip and still to no avail.
When plugged in, it will run *off the battery* and the charger will show a green light and not trickle charge the battery. It will drain the battery, and then when it is drained it will run off the power. Check the screen shot. I am thinking that the charger is the culprit. Because it holds a charge when I let it charge while it is off. It will charge up just fine, in the two hours or whatever it takes to charge itself up. Battery usage is normal when it is running off the battery.

iMac 27 locking up after sleep mode requiring full power shut down and rebooting in safe mode then shutting down and rebooting normally.. Permissions and this check show no errors, the only error sleep mode failure. Boot up is very slow as well as wake up when possible is slow. Yosemite seems to need a new release in order to correct the boot problems. System operates more like a Windows machine than Apple machine what's going on?

My MBP has this issue every once in a while where I have to hold the power button and force shut down. Randomly the volume keys/brightness etc. stop working and i can't open apps or shut it down normally. Everything still works though (can still function in open applications) Anyone know what the problem is? It fixes when I force reset.

I am getting a pop up "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?".
The one we get, if pressed the power button to switch it off?. The problem is not consistent and mostly I get if left inactive for some time(random). I have run the hardware test(installer DVD and pressing D) without any issue found.

In tiger you could easily disable safe sleep and remove the sleep image file but in Leopard this seems to have changed. Yes you can disable safe sleep & remove sleep image files but only temporarily. As soon as you restart or change energy settings back to default, leopard automatically reverts the safe sleep settings to default and starts creating an image file again
Is there no way to permanently disable/remove these?

I leave my Air on pretty much all the time, and put it to sleep while moving around etc. Sleeping it disconnect the Airport connection - which if very annoying. At a desk I've just been dimming the display all the way off in order to keep my connection.
However, I recently noticed that by setting a "sleep display" hot corner, my network connection is maintained.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is sleep display equivalent (functionally) to simply dimming the display all the way down?
2) Is there a way to either set up a shortcut to sleep the display (other than a hot corner) and/or set it so that only the DISPLAY sleeps after 'x' minutes?
