I just bought a brand new 2.5ghz 15 inch MBP. I need to run windows (unfortunately on it for a few work applications and need some advice. I bought the latest version of parallels so I don't have to reboot to switch between apps.
However I wanted to avoid buying another copy of windows XP as I have a desktop (from Dell) with a license I will no longer be using. I don't have the OEM disc anymore (its an old computer) but if I obtain a retail windows XP install disc (with SP2 already included - its a friends who IS using his key that came with the disc), and then use the serial key from my old dell/XP computer, will this work?
i'm abit ocd with stuff on my computer, so stuff like this really bothers me. i had parallels one my computer for a little while whilst i needed windows. now i don't i got rid of the partition and uninstalled parallels. but, .exe files and some other files still show the parallels logo, as if it wants to open them in parallels.
is there any way i can change this? i've removed everything i can think of in preferences, application support, startup items, receipts, etc to do with parallels but to no avail.
I have Parallels 3 installed, mostly to run MS Money. Last night I installed Snow Leopard, unaware that Parallels 3 is not compatible. It appears that I need to go out and buy Parallels 4 as that will work with Snow Leopard.
My question is will all my data within Windows remain if I install 4 or will it be a completely new Windows? And if so, how do I go in and retrieve my MS Money data as I can no longer access it with Parallels 3.
I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).
Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.
I just downloaded the latest update to Parallels. I shut down Parallels before running the update, and I even did a reboot of the computer. And yet every time I run the update program it keeps telling me to "shut down these running and suspended virtual machines" and refers to "My Boot Camp"Like I said, I rebooted the computer first. There are no virtual machines running. Zero, zilch, nada. So why in the ******* is Parallels telling me that there is? "My Boot Camp" isn't even a VM that I use
I've got a 2,1, 2.0 GHz MB with 2GB RAM, and I'm thinking about adding more RAM. I believe the limit my machine can address is 3.0 GB, but I found a set of benchmarks that gave dramatic improvements with 4GB on a test running Photoshop CS3 and Parallels: http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Ma...ory_Benchmarks
I'm just wondering why this is? If there is a virtual machine does it evade the 3GB limit, and if so, if I'm doing a lot of work in Windows on Parallels would it be worth going for the extra GB?
I was thinking about running parallels with XP alongside my other apps. Likely to have four users logged on and perhaps at least six apps open along with parallels running XP. Will my 4GB be enough or will the system get bogged down? Be interested to find out people experiences of using parallels and how the performance is on a 3.06Ghz imac.
I just bought a new iMac last night, I am finally leaving the PC world. I need to install a OS for parallels since I have alot of PC programs I need to run. I have ran thru the paralells set up and installed a windows xp sp1 home edition cd when prompted but it will not load properly. The XP install disc is a disk I got with an older Dell laptop. And it says for distribution with Dell computers only. I starts to load, I input my activation code and it starts to install.
The first few times it got hung up saying that it is installing and will take 39 minutes to complete but just sat there for hours. Now its missing some line of code. O well I have to get a new copy of XP I guess. Here is the issue, I must have XP with nothing new then SP2. When I run sp3 my CAD program (softplan) cannot print to scale. They said its a problem with sp3 and I would have to upgrade V14 to fix this issue. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get this current XP sp1 to load, or can I get an XP sp2. Everything I find is preloaded sp3.
I got the program parallel 5 with my iMac and I as wondering what the advantages or disadvantages to running windows. I do have Windows 7 OS. But I don't really have any programs for windows that I have to have that Mac OS X won't do. So I guess is it worth it?
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8A306) I am waiting to purchase a new Mac Pro, when I do, I still need to run some win apps (non games via Parallels). What impacts to the speed of these would one likely see? I plan to spec my new MP with the fastest single chip processor, fastest CPU, and at least 8 gigs ram. Config advice also welcome.
I am running MAC OS X version 10.5.6, on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac.Last week I installed Parallels 3 (and updated online to build 5608), and Windows XP SP3 Everything was working fine, however, over the last few days the network connection on Parallels has stopped working. It is still working fine on OS X.The message I get under network conections is:Local area connection......limited or no connectivity....Parallels network adapter.I tried to repair the connection, but the IP address could not be renewed.
I have a 17 MacBook Pro and am a diehard Mac fan. However, there are a few Windows programs that I need to run at home, so I set up another login ID and added Parallels Desktop 4.0, along with Windows XP and the few Windows programs I need, to that new login account (ie, distinct from my primary Mac account that I do all of my Mac work out of). This setup works great.
Three Questions:
1)Is there any advantage to run Parallels in that separate account, or should I just consolidate Parallels into my primary account? I set up the separate account for Parallels thinking that it would keep my primary account safer and more stable, but perhaps I am completely wrong.
I now need to add a program for work that involves remote access to work computers via PC software.
2) Is there an advantage to set this up to run in Boot Camp (rather than Parallels)? I am assuming that it will run faster there. Also, will this keep the rest of my Mac safer than if I run it in Parallels?
3) If I set my work PC program to run in Boot Camp, will my personal Parallels programs in the separate Mac login account still run fine, or will they somehow conflict with each other?
New to Mac. Just got my Mac 2 days ago. Trying to install windows xp using parallels 5. I downloaded and ISO file for windows and I double clicked it and it showed on the mac desktop, But parallels wont install windows from that. I am sorry if there is a thread already on this matter. I know I am doing something wrong but cant figure it out since I am new to all this.
I am having an issue that I can't resolve. Starting this morning, I lost my internet connectivity in both Firefox and Safari (OSX 10.5.8 on my Macbook pro) The odd thing is, that using my parallels installation of XP, I'm able to access the internet without a problem, that's how I'm making this post. I don't have any proxies set up either in firefox or the network preferences under OSX or XP. I'm able to connect to and access all files on the network, I just can't get to the internet. This has really got me baffled. I ran network utility and got 100% packet loss, and it's fine under XP. Any ideas? I've attached a picture of the ping from XP and the Ping from Network Utility, done basically simultaneously
I have been running Vista in Parallels 5 on my rev B 1.86 MBA SSD. Now I see version 6 is out and what is the opinion about the speed increase? Btw, I still run Leopard 10.5 on my MBA.
I got Parallels for Christmas and loaded Windows on the virtual machine. Should I worry about Anti-Virus software on it? Will anything that Windows gets affect the Mac's OS? (I wouldn't think so)
New iMac and have installed latest version of Parallels 6 via Switch to Mac edition. Coming from Dell Inspiron Laptop. When booting in, it hangs forever on Welcome Screen. Have been told I need to update Wireless Driver, however, cannot see a wireless card under Device Manager. ( I got to desktop by CNTR-ALT-DELETE) Downloaded the new driver from Dell, but when I run, it says the hardware not found. I can get to Internet from Vista in VM no problem. But I am trying to fix the hanging on Welcome Screen issue by updating the driver for the wireless card.
I have just bought a new macbook pro and have a couple of questions which i would really appreciate some help with.
1.As i have limited tech ability i assume its best to just use the mac migrant assistant and connect the 2 macs and let the machine do it for me? Is that ok to do.
2. I am going to install parallels and Xp asi have some programmes that runs best under Xp.Do i install paralllels/xp before i do my mac transfer?
I'm considering purchasing a MacBook Air and would like to know if anyone out there is happily running Parallels 2.5 (Build 3214) on their Air. Up to now that version of Parallels has done everything I needed so I saw no need to upgrade the software.
Also are there any UK owners who can report their experiences using the BBC iPlayer (in OS X) on the MBA.
I installed XP successfully via bootcamp and got it to connect to the internet. Put parallels on the macbook today and when it opened it said I needed to activate windows before I could use it. But in parallels I can't get it to connect to the internet to activate? What am I doing wrong??
I think I will just use Vista for gaming and a bit photoshop or photo editing stuffs? What is the big differences with 32 and 64 bit? Going to use with the new MBP 17".
I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Buying Tips sub-forum or this one, so Mods, please feel free to move it if necessary. With the new Mini updates today, I've started to seriously consider picking one up as a workhorse at home. My current computer is the 1.67 Powerbook G4 w/ 2G RAM, and for what I need at the moment, it runs decently; however, I can tell that its a 3.5 year old machine and it won't run everything I'll need it to.
So my question to you is this: would the low end Mini, which I would upgrade w/ a larger 7200rpm HDD and 4G Ram, effectively run Adobe CS4 and Parallels/VMWare Fusion w/ AutoCAD at a decent clip? I understand that its Apple's low(ish)-priced competitor, but keep in mind that I'd be coming from using CS (and obviously no AutoCAD) on an older G4, so any increase in speed coming from three and a half years of computer advancements would still be fast to me...but would they be fast enough for my programs?
Not sure how accurate title is, but I need some help here, By friday would be best. I have an 80GB HDD, so I'm a little bit crammed for space. My biggest problem with space is operating systems. I use parallels to run a few OSs, 20GB worth are on the HDD. My problem is that sometimes I need to boot up in only one OS, using Boot Camp, and sometimes I just want to use parallels. Because I don't have a lot of space I can't just install them each twice, that would be half my HDD! I'm looking for a way to use the same OS to boot up in parallels or Boot Camp. Now from what I understand parallels allows you to boot up your OS located in other partitions to run next to Mac.
Am I correct? Assuming I am correct, I have another problem. I am always needing different amounts of space, so setting a permeant space for each (partitioning) doesn't fly. (I know I can just make the Boot Camp partition large then use it for my Mac as well, but that just won't do either). When you boot the Boot Camp partition up in parallels how does HDD space work? So I need to be able to adjust the partitioned space without having to erase it. Is that possible? Is there any way to boot the computer into a different OS that is on the same partition as Leopard? One last question. Is there any way to boot the computer into a different OS by using an external drive?
When I first started using Parallels several months ago my Windows XP ran great and I had no problems. But recently it has become very sluggish and lags a lot. I'm using a Mac mini with 4gb of ram and have allocated Parallels to use the max 2876mb in the settings.
I just installed bootcamp on my machine. I didn't think I would need to run both osx and xp at the same time but parallels is looking good to me right now. Since I already installed xp via boot camp, can I just download parallels from their site and be able to run both OS's at the same time, I could not find this information on their site.
If I am running xp on bootcamp, is it possible to install parallels and then just run xp I installed or do I have to install the xp all over again for parallels?
