i was going to put an installation disc in my iMac. When i noticed that it would not suck in the disc. I tried pressing and holding down the eject button but nothing actually happened. I don't want to push the disc in because it will get stuck in there. The Apple Store is in the capital and i live about 332 km or hundreds of miles away from there so are there any tips?

I have a 20" G5 iSight iMac running OS X 10.4.11. The optical drive will not recognise any discs other than original audio CDs - it takes a long time to do this, and is very noisy whilst spinning. Any other DVDs or CDs (including ones burnt on the same machine) are just ejected after about 30 seconds of whirring and do not appear to be recognised anywhere by the computer.

My friend is telling me the dvd player stopped because the hard drive is to full. Its a nice imac4,1. It needs to be cleaned out and or restored but what software should we use? Or is there a way to do it for free.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
I've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?

Also, burning CDs -- sometimes it will, sometimes it won't.

Ok, so I've got a Philips DVD R/RW drive and I want to put it in my Mac Pro. I put it in, hooked everything up, but it won't open for me (opt. + Eject, I know). It's set on cable select, but I've also tried it on slave with the stock on master. Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to get this working as soon as I can.
PS, when I wake the MP from sleep, the light on the second drive blinks, but nothing else.
I just installed the plextor px-760A dvd drive in the second optical drive bay in my new mac pro. I have set the jumper to cable select. After rebooting, both drives now dont show up at all - the apple installed drive and my new one are now not available.
I opened up the machine again to check the cabling to make sure its all seated correctly, then rebooted again - no luck. the eject button cant even open the original drive. i did a system profile and there was no dvd drive listed. I have an eject button on my top menu bar which shows "No Drives" if you click on it.
I am sure a couple of folks here have installed the plextor. what have i missed?
I was installing X-Plane 9 on my fairly new Mac Pro when it stopped working. I switched disks and nothing happened, the drive just won't spin up. I have tried a number of different CDs and DVDs and none will spin up. I can verify that by looking at the position of the disk when I put it in and take it out, it never moves.I have tried the usual reboot and resetting the PRAM. (I did the command option o r and un-plugged with power button for 5 seconds)I tried calling Apple care 2 times and the message I get is, the call center is closed. That's it, they don't even tell what hours they *ARE* open.

It was all working great however I noticed that after I used it in the ps3, I could no longer load videos on it (they would go on, they just wouldnt work).. So since this was a new drive I figured maybe i just needed to format it. I used the disk utility but i cant remember which setting i used to erase it. Once I erased it I successfully put a video on and put it into my ps3 to try. The ps3 couldnt see the usb drive anymore. so I put it back into the mac. and now the mac wont see it anymore. I tried putting it into a pc with vista, it recognized it but wouldnt let me format it or open it.

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLately I've been using my external hard drive as the main drive of my imac I5 and every day it freezes when I open 3 or 4 apps or more or while doing several stuff at the same time. This, obviously, doesnt happen when using the internal hard drive of the imac, so I suppose is due to using firewire 800 or usb 2.0. Is it normal for every external hard drive to freeze when using it as the main drive or maybe is it that my external hard drive is bad?
I'm planning on buying a more quieter external hard drive to use as the main drive of my imac, but I wont do so if it also keeps freezing every day. Any suggestions? Is it normal even when using firewire 800? When using the external hard drive I umount the internal drive of the imac. Maybe this is the reason? Its a Lacie Big Disk 500GB. Would an external SSD make a difference or would it still freeze?

The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's. There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.

I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?

It had been working fine in both Mac OS and Windows, however it will no longer show up in Finder or Disk Utility. It does, however show up in USB Prober and System Profiler. In Windows, it won't show up but sounds are emitted when I pull it out or plug it in. Of interest, it is a Kingston drive but System Profiler lists the manufacturer as Alcor Micro.

For example when I go into my system settings it shows my start up disks as a file "..TOSHIBA.." I know this computer has been refurbished, but is this something that could cause the CD/DVD drive to not work?
Is there someway I can fix this problem myself? I would really like to get my CD drive to work. On some CD's I can hear it trying to read it but then spits it out shortly after...some it wont do anything. But the eject button works just fine.
