Mac Pro :: Second DVD Drive Install Not Working?

Mar 30, 2008

I just installed the plextor px-760A dvd drive in the second optical drive bay in my new mac pro. I have set the jumper to cable select. After rebooting, both drives now dont show up at all - the apple installed drive and my new one are now not available.

I opened up the machine again to check the cabling to make sure its all seated correctly, then rebooted again - no luck. the eject button cant even open the original drive. i did a system profile and there was no dvd drive listed. I have an eject button on my top menu bar which shows "No Drives" if you click on it.

I am sure a couple of folks here have installed the plextor. what have i missed?

MacBook Pro :: Why Install Disc Not Working - CD Drive Reads Then Ejects It

Jun 9, 2012

I own a Macbook Pro, it's a A1150 model with an Intel Core Duo processor. I'm trying to use my install disc but every time I try to use it, the cd drive reads it for a few seconds but then just ejects it afterwards. What can I try to get it to work? My laptop came with the 10.4.5 install disc and I upgraded to 10.6 Snow Leopard via disc (the disc itself just says 10.6). I have all my software updates and it shows I have OS X version 10.6.8 currently installed.

When I turn on the computer with the 10.4.5 disc already inserted and hold C it just boots up like normal and ejects my install disc. Likewise when I try with the 10.6 Snow Leopard disc it does the same thing. I've tried holding the option key and it still just ejects the disc after it reads it for a while. Both discs are genuine (not copies) in pretty much like new condition without and scratches/smudges/dirt and my Superdrive reads/burns cd and dvd's just fine.

MacBook Pro :: Remove Hard Drive - Install In External Enclosure And Install OS X?

Jan 5, 2011

My MBP was recently squished in a motorcycle accident and its hard drive and superdrive were destroyed. Is it possible to buy a new hard drive, put it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, then install OS X on it using the discs that came with my destroyed MBP in a different Mac, then put the hard drive into the squished computer and have it use that hard drive as its startup disk? The motherboard on the squished computer is fine, I just can't install OS X on it because it has a broken superdrive.

IMac :: Install New Hard Drive But Missing Leopard Install Disc

Jan 30, 2010

I'm using a iMac PowerPC G5 that I've received from my brother. He gave it to me with a fresh install of Leopard on it, but he unfortunately no longer has the disc that came with the computer that he also used to format it before handing it to me. With that said, I ordered a new internal hard drive. Naturally, I'll need to re-install Leopard, but I don't have an install disc anywhere. How is this going to be possible? Or will it not be? Do I have to buy a new Leopard install disc? If so where and how much?

IMac :: Unable To Install Clean Snow Leopard / Instructions To Install On Internal Drive?

Dec 20, 2009

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 iMac is being replaced but I have to reinstall Snow Leopard myself.I did search in MRoogle and at Apple and cannot seem to find instructions on how to perform a clean Snow Leopard install on an iMac internal HD.

Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

MacBook :: Install OS On Blank Hard Drive Without Install Disc

I have an aluminum Macbook from late 2008, model A1278. I just had to replace the hard drive, and need to install an OS on the currently blank HDD. Problem is, my CD drive doesn't work, so I can't just install from a disc. I had installed Mountain Lion on my old hard drive, but the original OS was Snow Leopard. I haven't succeeded in getting any of my information off my old HDD. Is there another way to install either Snow Leopard or Lion onto my new hard drive?

OS X :: Install DVD Not Working - Can't Install OSX?

Oct 3, 2010

I've created a massive disaster by trying to delete the Windows OS on my Mac. For the moment I'll skip all the details around how I got to this EPIC FAIL but the current condition of my Mac is this: when I restart it goes straight to the Windows OS which says "error loading operating system", when I press command+option+P+R it takes forever to load/and most of the time my Mac Installation DVD is simply sped out/. When it loads I'm trying to install the MAC OS all over again/dont care bout the data - its backed up/, it only shows the WIndows Partition which originally was FAT32 but I clicked options and I've changed it to Mac /which was the exact moment when "error loading system" appeared/ the Installation goes ok till the moment when it starts checking the Mac Install DVD and gives me an error and asks me to restart the installation. Now I'v tried with two different DVD's, cause it told me that I should check my DVD for fingerprints, stains, scratches, etc., which is not the case. And still does not work!I'm not very good at this in a first place, than I've already read 100 pages of how to fix it, and after all Im a woman!! I'm trying to keep my spirit up, but the truth is my whole life depends on that laptop / work,studies,family,friends/ please write me an email if have any idea how to fix it.

MacBook :: Install New Hard Drive / No DVD Drive / Gray Screen Of Death

Aug 29, 2014

I have never backed up my Macbook 2.1 duo before yesterday. While in the process of backing up I was using photoshop, and my computer froze. I waited 30 min and then decided to shut it down. When I tried to turn it on it will not boot-up, I only get the grey screen of death. I had just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard this week. I used an external DVD drive which seemed to cause issues. So I thought I might be able to use that to install a clean version on this busted drive, well nothing worked, tried holding option key, holding down the C key. I ordered another drive that says its compatible with my drive. Since the my mac doesnt seem to acknowledge my drive, I bought an external housing for my new internal. I want to format and load Snow leopard onto the new hard drive using my girl friends mac. then put in my macbook. I would like to know if this will work? how I need to format my drive in disk utility.. Is it possible that it is not my Hard Drive?

Another side note, I just upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB on my Macbook 2.1, I did try and putting my old ram back in just incase that was the issue.

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Makes Crunching Sound / Partitioned Drive To Install Windows?

Aug 28, 2009

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.

I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

MacBook :: Mac OS9 Working With SheepShaver - Can't Install .img Nor See .smi?

Oct 2, 2010

I'm from Germany! Recently I stumbled upon a Game I used to play with my brother for hours and hours it is called Lode Runner The Legend Returns. The Problem is that it doesn't actually work on OS X so I used SheepShaver to run OS9 on my computer. So I found Load Runner on macintoshgarden.com and downloaded it. I was bringing it over to the Mac OS 9, when I realized that ".img" was not recognized by the system because a window emerged:

"The Document TLR.img could not be opened, because the application Disk Copy could not be found"!!

So I starded looking for "Disk Copy" I found one (6.3.3 to be precise) and downloaded it to the Mac OSX here you can't open it because classic mode is no longer supported on Snow Leopard. So I got into The Mac OS9 to open it via the little "unix" icon where you can access the Data on your computer and voila! I can't see the darn file. It's one of those ".smi"-files.

MacBook Air :: Remote Install Not Working?

Jan 26, 2009

Been lurking around the forum getting some good ideas. I recently picked up a Macbook Air Rev A 1.8/SSD (couldn't resist at current refurb prices).

Anyway great machine but for one thing - I am trying to do a clean install but the remote install is not working for me via wifi or ethernet.

I have connected my old macbook to my MBA and I can see the dvd install disk. I successfully go through the whole process of restarting the MBA (holding the option button), the startup disks appear and I can connect to my home wireless network, I select the dvd install disk and click on the arrow button and my MBA restarts. However, it then does one of two things - restarts and goes to the desktop or there is a kernel panic attack.

Basically I don't get to the next stage where you select your language and go on to partition the drive.

MacBook Pro :: Tried Install From 3 Discs - Nothing Working?

Feb 6, 2010

I have 13" MBP Mid - 2009 bought July '09. My computer started with a ? folder flashing the other day, and I can't get Leopard or Snow Leopard to reinstall. My computer has crashed before, and I ended up somehow getting Leopard to install. I have time machine backups of my data. I tried erasing and reinstalling both Leopard and Snow Leopard; I've tried re partitioning and reinstalling both Leopard and Snow Leopard; I've tried Zeroing out the data then installing and no go either. Any Ideas?

When my computer crashed before, I thought it was because of faulty snow leopard upgrade installation (installed then crashed a month later). I called Apple and they sent me a new Snow Leopard Disc. Before the disc arrived, I finally got Leopard to install. I waited till I got an external hard drive to back up my stuff before I installed snow leopard with new disc. Well, I installed snow leopard the week after christmas, and now a month later it did this again. I tried all that I told you in the above paragraph. What is wrong with my computer? I really need it cause its the only mac I have and I have papers I need to turn in that are on my backups!

Have tried to repair permissions. Rebooted several times.

Even installed 8.0 (up from 7.0), the newest version to see if it would make a difference. Same results.

Is there a way to go back to 10.4.8 where I had no such problems?

Applications :: Product ID For Office 2004 Install On Mac Not Working

Jan 14, 2009

I've been using Office X for some time. I bought Office 2004 for Mac (Student Teacher Edition) from a friend who upgraded last May. I got the manual and the Product ID with it. I never got around to Installing it, but my hard drive failed recently and Apple replaced it, obviously without any of my stuff on it. So I decided if I have to reinstall all my software, I'd go ahead and use the Office 2004 as I don't think the Office X is fully compatible with Tiger (because of it's age and a few issues I've had with it over the past two years). Now, here's the problem. When I tried to install it, the product ID didn't work as the Product/CD Key.

I called my friend and she no longer has the box or the Product Key, and of course, the Product key from my Office X doesn't work. Is anyone familiar with Office 2004 for Mac? Is there any difference between the "retail" version and the Student/teacher version that would prevent the Product Key from one with working with the other? Would anyone be willing to share their Product key with me, to install the software so I can get back to work? I've already lost 4 days in time (and have to recreate 2 days worth of work that was done after my last file backup) and don't have time to deal with this stuff.

MacBook Air :: Leopard Install DVD Not Working - BaseSystem Error

Mar 12, 2009

Im rebuilding a MacBook Air at work and ran into a problem....

After checking the install DVD I get the error:

The installer could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package

Ive ran a simple Hardware Test and that came back ok, its currently running an extended hardware test.

I am using the original Air install DVDs

Ive tried erasing the drive (SSD 64GB) and that made no difference...

Ive done some reading already on the net and this error usually points to a RAM issue, 3rd party RAM, but obviously this cant be the case with the Air...

Its a 1.8 Rev A with the original SSD and Im using the Superdrive....

OS X :: MBP Function Keys And Multi Touch Not Working After Archive Install?

Jun 5, 2008

I've got a new 15" mbp that tonight I drove out with to the apple store. It was unable to mount external devices (iPods, external hd's, etc). The Genius ended up doing an archive install, saying that the mounting disks were running full throttle (making it EXTREMELY hot) but not succeeding; something in the OS had gotten stuck. So I left after he did an archive and install and tested my drive and iPod. Everything was working....I thought. Long drive back home. Open up my computer, try to adjust screen brightness...nothing. Try to adjust volume. Nothing. None of the function keys work. The eject button works, and strangely enough, the F12 button which should raise the volume also tries to eject. The pause button brings up the spaces window (showing all four spaces).

Very frustrated, could use some advice. Do I need to do an erase and install? These keys worked fine before the archive/install.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Working / Logic Board Unable To Communicate With Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2009

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.

The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
