OS X :: Drive Working Without Installation?
Jul 28, 2009
After plugging in the Passport, it seems the drive was working w/out installation because I was able to drag and drop almost immediately. Now all that's left is the manuals and set up files still on it. Is it okay to go ahead and delete these?

I had a trial of Photoshop and I purchased it on disk. I arrived and I tried to install it, but the serial number wouldn't work. I called Adobe and they said it was because I had a trial. I tried to uninstall it, but it wouldn't work, so I drug everything to the trash. Now when I try to install Photoshop from the disk, I get this error: Critical errors were found in setup for Adobe Photoshop CS4: undefined
The installer database is invalid: please re-install the product from the original media Please see the Setup log file for details. Click Quit to exit Setup.

So i'm thinking of getting a Mac Pro soon but what is kind of holding me off is that Bootcamp still doesn't offer 64-Bit Windows Xp installation & drivers support. I need to use Xp from time to time for certain tasks. It's really silly if you think that one wants to take use of the Ram & CPU and it's quite disappointing Apple has made no efforts in that regard.
Is there a way to manually setup a 64-Bit Xp installation fully working?

I got a new Macbook today, and installed the Mac OS X 10.5.6. It stalled so I shut down, and when I logged in again Finder and Spotlight doesn't work. Though my hard drive says is labelled Mac HD: Mac OS X 10.5.6 , I am continuously prompted that Spotlight closed unexpectedly. And when I try to reinstall the Mac OS X, the DVD no longer appears on the desktop and Finder too, cannot be opened for me to locate the DVD.

my new 2010 MBP just went to hell on me. All of a sudden all my factory installed software such as ical, dictionary, stickies, photobooth stopped working. They wont open in any way, either dock or applications. I've deleted plist, repaired disk permissions and repaired disk... nothing. Third party apps, safari and iphoto work. But iphoto froze when I open it. Apple wants me to reinstall the OS but I would like to avoid if possible.

I used BootCamp to partition my iMac's HD and install Vista. After doing so, I remembered I have a USB 2.0 80 gig hard drive with nothing on it. Would it be possible to put Vista on that? I'd prefer to just move the partition if possible, if not, I'd reinstall Vista. I know the Intel Macs can boot from USB, I just don't know if they'll boot Windows from USB.

Four days ago my Macbook pro stopped working while I was doing internet. I had to shut it down but it never booted up again. I tried multiple times to format it with disk utility but it never worked utile at my 25th attempt, disk utility finally detected it so I formatted it but when I tried to install OS X, the disk couldn't be detected just as before. I thought that my HD was dead so i bought a new western digital scorpio blue 320 GB 5400 rpm. Now, it's the same story as before, my new hard drive is never recognize by the installation cd.
More infos:
- The drive is turning (it has power)
- With my first HD, i couldn't open the OSX partition but I could open the Windows partition.
- With my new HD in, the installation cd of OS X and windows cant detect the hard drive.

Hey guys, sorry this may seem like a basic question but here goes. There are many, many pages, websites and videos on how to install a hard drive into the MP, no problems there what my question is, is what's next?
The HDD is arriving Tuesday, once I have installed what will I have to do to it to make it a part of my current HDD. I assume Im looking at a RAID 0 using disk utility?
Before I do that will I have to install 10.5 on the HDD or just use disk utility to format it?

I went to do a system update which froze on "Configuring The Install" (or something similar). So I gave my quad Mac Pro a cold reboo and I get a prohibited sign, or whatever. (You know, the ghostbusters symbol without the ghost.) I know, I deserve that though, shame on me for turning it off during a system update. I waited a LONG time. I don't think that's the root problem though. Anyway, I boot up via the system CD, load up Disk Utility, which (takes forever) and after trying to Verify, I get an "Invalid B-Node Size" error. I try to click "OK" but Disk Utility continues to be unresponsive for a long time. I wait it out, reboot back into Windows and here I am.
The hard drive is super old. Like probably 7 years. It's a Maxtor 6Y120, 114 gig SATA drive. So I think it's probably just failing. Disk Utility couldn't unmount it or verify it. So what I want to do is just reinstall Leopard, but I have a LOT of work stuff on my Windows drive. (A separate physical SATA drive, not a partition.) Obviously I will back it all up, but I would definitely like to avoid reinstalling Windows, all my apps, and restoring my work files.
So I have a couple of questions - 1) Will re-installing Leopard "orphan" my Windows bootcamp drive, so I can no longer boot into it? I would want to erase my Mac HD or possibly buy a new one to replace it. Which brings me to my 2nd question - 2) If I buy a completely new hard drive and install Leopard there, will my bootcamp partition still be bootable/intact? Or will they hate eachother?

I've got a blackbook which I've replaced the super drive with an hard drive (giving me two hard drives in total).
The primary hard drive is blank and I want to install Snow Leopard. My first thought was to use Remote Disc from my Windows 7 machine, but I'm not sure if this will work? I presume I need to connect to my windows 7 via ethernet cable, turn on the blackbook and hold control which gives me access to the remote disc?
Will this work or am I better copying OS X onto a bootable usb stick?

Macbook harddrive crashed (flashing question mark folder etc.). Bought new harddrive (2.5 in SATA), and reinstalled. Don't have original installation DVD so used legally acquired Mac OSX. Now instead of folder, the Apple logo appears with spinning gears but otherwise unresponsive. Can't install or eject DVD.

I've been looking into this a lot the passed few days, but there are a few answers I just can't find.
First of all, I know how to physically take apart my mac and put the new hard drive in. I have the new hard drive, and the tools I need.
The method I chose (before I looked into how to xfer data using macs) was to use time machine to make a backup of my entire hard drive on an external, which I did successfully.
However, before I take apart my mac and instal the new hard drive, there are a few things I want to be clear on, and I can't find the answers to.
Will I need the leopard OS disc for the new hard drive? Or does time capsule back up the OS as well, and give me some sort of prompt (doubtful)?
I have the pre late 2008 macbook pro, and it came with leopard. I haven't upgraded for several reasons I won't get into. My question now is, should I have the leopard OS disc? SHouldn't something like that have come with my mac? I ask because I feel like I should have one, but I don't remember getting one and can't find it anywhere. I always keep things like that.
And lastly, if I don't have the leopard OS disc, what do you think is the cheapest way for me to back up and xfer my data?
I have external hard drives, my new hard drive, and my old hard drive. Would it be cheaper for me to buy one of those things that directly xfers the data from one internal drive to another, or to buy another leopard disc? Is there a way I can just order the leopard disc I should have already for cheaper?

I just got my new 17" i7 MBP. Installed Intel 80gig SSD for boot and started installing OSX from supplied installer. Installation took over 2 hours with the optical drive making only slight noises every few seconds, not sounding anything like it should. Eventually it installed and everything seems fine and really snappy. Replaced superdrive with newmodus tray and hitachi 500gb drive.
Started installing Final Cut Studio 3. Pointed all audio and extra content to 500 gig drive. Installation of each disc is taking 2+ hours from an external CD/DVD drive hooked up usb 2 for one disk, then tried firewire for the next. Still really slow. What gives? Can't figure this one out. Does it have anything to do with the SSD?

I asked about running Snow Leopard on my mac after a hard drive fail. I'm having issues with formatting a new hard drive in my mac. I have a 2007 black macbook and I'm trying to run a 160gb SATA seagate hard drive. After replacing this hard drive, I booted my mac up from cd, ran through setup fine until I got to the 'select a drive to install to' - the point where my hard drive should be visible. Nothing there at all. Nothing to click on in the box. My question is, is there a process I need to undertake to format the hard drive or is this an indicator of a much bigger problem?

I recently installed a new 250 GB hard drive in my 800MHZ emac. I did a nice clean install of 10.4 on it and all was going well. The problem is that it randomly freezes after about 10 or 20 minutes. Mouse locks up, keyboard doesn't work.I tried pinging it from another computer and there was no response. I hold the power button in to shut it down and when it reboots it works fine for a while and then freezes again. I checked the console and it had this:
Mac OS X Version 10.4 (Build 8A428) 2006-02-10 20:36:25 -0500 2006-02-10 20:36:26.072 loginwindow[84] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -1407
I ran the disk utilty checks and they come up clean. I have tried reinstalling os x with no luck.

Macbook 2.4Ghz with Leopard 10.5.8, 320Gb drive (2 partitions)
Doing the standard upgrade install so I shove the SL disc in and run the installer, after an age it eventually reboots.
Then after another long wait the installer finally appears but when it asks to choose the drive to install to, my drive doesn't appear.
From the utilities menu, I can access disk utility and it only shows the DVD drive.
If I access system profiler my hard disk is still there in the SATA section.
Seems like I'm going to have format and do a clean install unless anyone has any ideas?

Recently, I was installing Windows 7 on my Bootcamp partition, and the installation was going fine, but I ran out of energy so the installation was interrupted. I boot my Mac OS, opened Bootcamp and erased the partition just to create it again and install Windows once again. However, when I loaded the installation from my DVD, I got an error message saying that a CD/DVD driver was missing, and it found no hard drives even after rescanning my computer. When I chose browse, I was surprised when I saw not 2, but 3 partitions, one with my MAC OS, the new Bootcamp partition, and a drive called X: that was created when the past install got interrupted.
I've tried erasing the partition in bootcamp over and over, but I can't erase it, even though Mac OS tells me my drive now consists of a single volume. Do I need to format my whole drive? Do I need to install OSX? Will I lose all my applications and data? In case you need it, here's some info:
OS X Version 10.6.2
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 Macbook Pro 4GB Ram
Windows 7 Ultimate

I have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with (upgraded) 8Gb ram and the original Toshiba 320GB, 5400rpm, 8mb, 2.5" SATA Hard drive, running Lion (upgraded through App store from Snow Leopard). I'm looking at getting a new Seagate Momentus XT 750GB, 7200rpm, 32mb, 2.5" with 8GB SSD built-in. I am fine with the hardware installation, though when I turn it on, as my original OS X was Snow Leopard, would I have to install that, then install Lion over it? Or is there an easier way of just installing Lion onto my new hard drive?
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 8GB RAM, Lion OSX.

I have OS X Lion. I recently purchased this Macbook Pro 15" laptop, and I am planning on returning it, to get the newer upgraded laptop, as the store manager said I can do this, since I purchased my laptop within 30 days of the announcement of a new MacBook Pro. I would like to format everything, before I return it back to the store, however, it never came with an installation cd. How can I do this? I have tried ways that I have heard, such as creating a new admin user account and deleting all the other accounts. Also I have erased all the free space using the disk utility section. However, it will not allow me to erase the hard drive. Is there a way to do this without an installation cd?

Just wanted to let everyone know this morning I installed a brand new drive in my mac mini (320GB 7200RPM for the record)
Then booted off the snow leopard disk and did a fresh install.
The key is to go into the disk utility menu when the first snow leopard screen is displayed (I think the button is "continue" on the first screen). Once in disk utility you can format your bare drive and then upon closing disk utility the SL installer will come back and prompt you to install on the drive you just formatted.
This was using the $29 snow leopard upgrade disk for the record (and yes I already owned leopard for this machine).
SL is so far working sweet except for the lack of istat menus! They really need to get a move on and get that SL compatible version released.
