View 1 RepliesI have the latest update for Safari on my MacBook Pro 17" (running the latest Lion update). Lately, the command-Q (quit) option under the File menu is greyed out/not available. I tried using the Quit function from the dock icon for Safari--no good, either. I have to Force Quit in order to close Safari.

Safari won't quit, tried to restart computer and shut down, but Safari won't let it. I will show you a screen shot I took of this issue. The "Quit Safari" option is greyed out.

I wanted to force quit an application on my first gen MacBook running Mac OS X 10.6.3, so I looked up the short cut key command from the Apple menu. I saw that it was option-command-power-button. I pressed these keys, and my Mac instantly displayed a black screen. After about five seconds, my Mac made the usual sounds of starting up. I booted up, and nothing seemed to have been affected, so I double checked Console, which didn't help much. I looked up the short cut key command for force quit online. The Internet says its option-command-esc. I tried the command, and up popped the force quit prompt. So why is the short cut key command WRONG on my Apple menu?

Since Tiger and even more so with Leopard, I have found the 'Force Quit' command to be a pointless white elephant.
When the spinning beachball hits it tends to make the application unresponsive and then spread to all other apps. Attempting to bring up the force quit function is equally fruitless. Of course, by the time it eventually pops up, the offending application has either quit itself (I'm looking at you Adobe CS4) or has become responsive again (I'm looking at you Safari).
Has anyone noticed any improvement in Snow Leopards?
When I try to use this command I am sent to front row. I can force quit throught the apple menu. This began when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

There are several extensions I have installed from the Safari extension gallery. Two of them are the twitter extension and the Gtool Bar. I would like their tool bars to be viewable but they are greyed out under the View menu option. Any reasons why this is and what can I do?

What is the problem between Safari 5.1.7 and hotmail? I can't quit safari while the hotmail window is open. I can close Safari from all other websites.

I'm trying to create an automator that will open safari, enable private browsing, go to my site, and log myself in. The problem is I need a terminal command line that will ensure private browsing is enabled.

The other day I noticed that the Forward & back arrows in my Safari 4 toolbar were missing, so I went to View: Customize Toolbar, and it kinda blinked but the toolbar dialogue box didn't appear. So I thought, "well. I'll just pull off the address field and then try again, maybe it will jolt it into working (you never know). But alas, then I had neither forward and back nor address field. So I dumped the com.apple.safari.plist, and re-loaded Safari 4. Still the same.
So logged out and signed in as guest, and it's all working fine in that user.
Logged back to mine and it's still broken. I've researched all I can, but nada. I turned off Mac Pilot and Tinkertool and everything else I could fine that i thought might interfere. I ran Repair permissions 3 time. I ran DiskWarrior, and it showed no funkiness with Safari. I only have the back & forward, add bookmark, url field, google field in the toolbar. Nothing I do seems to make it work. I don't want to do a clean install.
I can't shut down my computer because I can't quit Safari.

Anytime I quit Safari, it starts up again. If I quit it a second time, it will stay dead and won't restart itself. This includes when I am trying to restart my Mac; Safari and everything else quits, but then Safari immediately re-opens and cancels the restart (or shut down). I have to quit Safari a second time and then initiate the restart again. Why is this happening? Why might it happen with ANY app? I'm afraid it's due to something I did/installed to keep Safari alive, but I can't figure out what that might be or how to make this stop. I'm currently using Safari 5.1.4?

Safari doesn't ask "are you sure you want to quit 2 pages?" How do you get that back? Because when im working on an application for instance and I accidentally command+Q another safari page instead of command+W, it all quits and when I relaunch all my information is gone.

I have checked multiple support sites, and all indicate the same shortcut. I even tried "adding" the shortcut in the "Application Shortcuts" screen in Preferences.

My Safari always quit unexpectedly. At least once a day. Do you have similar problem?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI've been using FireFox for months now, but wanted to give Safari another shot. Checking out some add-ons, I found Glims. I wanted it to change my search engine bar to Bing, instead of Google. I got it, installed it, and was prompted to restart Safari. I did, but now it won't open. I get this message. I tried uninstalling Safari and downloading a new copy, and that did nothing. I still get the same message. Any thoughts? Went to Home/Library/Input Managers and found a "Glims" folder. I trashed that and now it works fine, sans cookies and bookmarks.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have hit the key accidently instead of return and poof, Safari quits unexpectedly. Forward slashes are no problem but Backslashes cause an instant quit. It doesn't happen all the time, but just today I hit the key accidently and Safari quit. I reloaded it up again and the first thing I did was type a backslash. Again instant quit. Upon trying it again, it didn't quit.
The Backslash must be typed in the Google search box to cause the sudden quit.

I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue... I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.

When I shut down this Mac, sometimes Safari quits cleanly, but mostly it doesn't. All Safari's windows close but the app itself doesn't. Checking the Safari menu the Quit command is greyed out whereas formerly it wasn't. At this point my workaround is to Force Quit Safari.

I have a 3 mo.old MacbookPro - OS X Lion 10.7.3 . Safari suddenly won't open or quit. I can't Shut Down; when I try I get an error message indicating Safari must quit first. I use computer for just the basics -- web surfing, email, i-tunes, and just a few Word documents saved. So I still have most of my memory yet available, and have very few applications installed. Is there a simple solution to fix this and prevent it in the future. So far I am not enjoying my switch from PC to Mac. I have had far too many of these random, complicated glitches which seem to require an advanced degree in computer software to solve.
