MacBook Pro :: The "Quit Safari" Option Is Greyed Out?
Apr 25, 2012
Safari won't quit, tried to restart computer and shut down, but Safari won't let it. I will show you a screen shot I took of this issue. The "Quit Safari" option is greyed out.
I have the latest update for Safari on my MacBook Pro 17" (running the latest Lion update). Lately, the command-Q (quit) option under the File menu is greyed out/not available. I tried using the Quit function from the dock icon for Safari--no good, either. I have to Force Quit in order to close Safari.
I cannot quit Safari. Quit is shaded in the menu. I control/click on icon in dock and quit, but it does not work. I reset Safari - still no change. Can't shut down.
I've been using Safari 5.1.4 for about six months and haven't had any problems until now. All of a sudden, I can't get Safari to quit. (My other browsers are fine.) When I scroll down under "file" the "quit safari" option is light gray and unresponsive. At first I thought I would uninstall Safari and then reinstall. However, when I tried dragging the icon out of applications, it wouldn't go into trash since it's permanently open. When I try to shut down or log out Safari aborts the operation.
Unable to close Safari at the drop down menu because Quit Safari is greyed out. When I right click on the icon in the tray and click on Quit, nothing happens. Therefore, I cannot restart or shut down this computer.
When I click "shutdown" on my MacBook PRO, I get a popup saying "Safari Cancelled Shutdown" then if I try to close Safari the "Quit Safari" is gray and none functional. Even if I let it set for several hours and try again it has not resolved. If I hold down the power button and force shutdown, then when I reboot it works fine for awhile then repeats the whole cycle. All software is updated.
My mac is suddenly very slow . I have been just putting it to sleep. I decided to shut it down, but Safari won't quit. When I go to File, the "Quit Safari" is greyed out. I also tried "Command Z" but that doesn't work either.
I just bought a HP OfficeJet 7500a (which does support duplex printing) and I am unable to do two-sided printing as the dropdown menu (located in layout in the print screen) is greyed-out. Do I require a driver or anything like that?Â
By the way I am running Mountain Lion Developer Preview if that matters.Â

I am trying to use the Internet Sharing Option on my Macbook Pro. But when I go to System Preferences>>Internet Sharing, I see that the internet sharing option is greyed out and is not editable, I mean I am not able to select it or make any changes to it.
There are several extensions I have installed from the Safari extension gallery. Two of them are the twitter extension and the Gtool Bar. I would like their tool bars to be viewable but they are greyed out under the View menu option. Any reasons why this is and what can I do?

I am trying to quit my safari but it won't do it.. The only response I get is the one of closing the window. I can't shut down my computer or restart it because of this.
So I was on stick am yesterday and safari started to bog down, then I couldn't scroll or click on anything at all. So I proceeded to go to force quit menu and the cursor froze. I'm new to mac so i'm upset. Do macs freeze often? If its safaris fault doesn't that mean that the OS shouldn't crash anyway
When I hit Bookmarks>show all Bookmarks, I get a fast visual 'flash' but the Bookmarks window does not appear, and an accompanying change in the bookmark icon in the bookmarks bar. When I again return to Bookmarks, rather than 'show all Bookmarks' I find 'hide all Bookmarks,' but other than the flash and the change from 'show' to 'hide' no bookmarks list has appeared. On the second attempt, I get the spinning beach ball, then Safari hangs, and the icon in the dock no longer shows 'quit' but 'force quit.' Running 2008 MacBook and Snow Leopard.
I did a software update a few days ago - it required me to do a Safari update. Since then I am unable to use safari. When I open Safari, it gives me a msg saying that Safari quit unexpectedly and will send report automatically to Apple. I have tried many things on the web. Deleted the application, and reinstalled. I tried from the original app installation DVD. I have also cleared the cache folder under library.
I just bought a Macbook Pro. When using safari, it freezes at least once a day to a point I can't force quit, and had to do a hard shut down. I've figured out that if I am using my computer and safari for more than a couple of hours, Safari just freezes. An apple support representative did mention that laptops were not meant to be constantly on, so I have been shutting it down when not in use. Still, I shouldn't have to shut down after an hour just to keep Safari from freezing. Â
Does this sound normal? Is there an easy fix? Do I need to look at getting this computer replaced? Or should I download a better web browser?Â
I'm also new to Mac, and thought switching from a windows would mean better reliability. So far I have been unimpressed with my computer. I just want it to work without worrying about having to force it to shut down once a day.Â
I am using a MacBook Air. When I attempt to select a file for uploading, Safari freezes and the spinning ball goes on and on. Example: When attempting to select and upload a document from my computer to the google drive, the wheel starts to spin when attempting to choose a file. I am unable to upload anything due to this issue.Â
What is the problem between Safari 5.1.7 and hotmail? I can't quit safari while the hotmail window is open. I can close Safari from all other websites.
Info:Mac OS X (10.7.2), Same OS on my iMac and MacBookPro
im having issues with my internet is randomly crashes saying safari quit unexpectedly while using the iLeadDVDCopy.so plug-in how do i resolve this issue i've updated the software but still it keeps happening
I was deleting items of my external drive through MacBook keeper and when I went to shut down Safari (which was open) stopped the shutdown process. So in the end I force quit the computer. When it came to restarting I get the usula apple symbol and sound when start up begins but there it stops. The spoked wheel just keeps spinning below the Apple Symbol.
Safari has frozen after I tried to quit it, I can't open or close any programs, force quit, use shortcuts or use any open programs as the safari bar still appears at the top of the screen, I would force shut down but I've got an after effects project open.
