G4 won't boot. No startup chime. Power button light goes off right after I power it on. Fans go on and soon switch to high / fast mode.
Tried everything imaginable -- removing all cards, RAM swapping, PMU reset, bought a new 3.6v PMU battery... everything on this forum (I think) except buying a new power supply which I'm trying to avoid.
I have an iMac G5 that I have previously had both the HDD and logic board replaced by Apple. It has been giving me a lot of spinning beach balls lately and yesterday would spin when I did anything as simple as opening Safari. I had tried to repair the disk in Disk Utility, but it failed after a few minutes. Last night I restarted it and it got stuck on my desktop, but wasn't fully loaded. I restarted it with the Leopard disk and I tried both to "Verify" and "Repair" the disk and neither worked. This morning when I tried it again, the only option available was "Verify Disk."
When I do this I get the attached message. It is an iPhone pic, so I apologize for the quality. I'd like to get this figured out ASAP, as we are moving out of state tomorrow! My other thought was I could try to boot with the Leopard disk and do a Time Machine restore. I'm not sure if that would help though. I don't have anything TOO important on the internal HDD, but I would like the chance to pull it out and hook it up to another computer to sift through it. I'm afraid if I do the Time Machine restore something might happen and I won't have the chance to go through the HDD.
My Power Mac froze, and won't boot. I'm running 10.4. No recent changes, downloads, or updates. Safe mode won't work. freezes on grey start up screen. System CD in drive, won't boot from holding down "c" held down option and selected CD and finally got to disk utility.
Now, when I try to run utility to repair permissions, I get an error stating "disk utility has lost its connection with the disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility" happens over and over.
When I try to repair disk, I get a red line saying "reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect date, keys out of order. The volume could not be repaired". Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972). 1 volume could not be repaired.

I ran a disk check on my MacBook Pro which told me to run disk repair. Since this was my boot HD, I took out my Installation DVD, put it into the running system and started the installation file then selected that I wanted to reboot and start utilities. The system then rebooted, the "chime" came, and then, silence, gray screen with apple logo, nothing is happening. What do I need to do, to get further and repair my hard disk?

I have seen a similar thread about starting with Tiger and then adding a Leopard partition, but I want to go the other way around.
Also, is it possible for me to do this without having to reinstall Leopard, such as making a partition with Boot Camp and then tweaking it with the Disk Utility in the Tiger installer?
I currently have my Macbook Pro (newest version as of Aug 09) set up with Windows XP and Leopard via Bootcamp. I don't use Windows almost ever anymore so I wanted to install Ubuntu on it. IE, just load Ubuntu over Windows. The windows partition is NTFS formatted.

I am running a mac pro 2x2.26 quad core 8 gigs ram and the 4870 video card and everything works great(mac os 10.6.2) ,i also dual boot to windows vista 64 and that works good too. what would it take besides buying the win7 op system to run it instead of vista64 will the present bootcamp support win7 installation or do i need to download something newer for driver assistance

However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.

However the Mac OS Server (as far as I can tell) doesn't come with the Boot camp utility. So here's my conundrum: Do I ignore the server version of Mac and install Snow Leopard client with boot camp assistant or do I just use Disc Utility to create a second partition on one of the Mini drives and install Windows like any other computer? and keep using the server version of Snow Leopard?

I have created a partition in bootcamp but every time it tries to boot from the dvd a black screen comes up with a flashing white cursor and thats it. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 2.0G G5 Power Mac here. When you plug the power into the machine, it automatically powers up. The fans come on low and the power light is on. There is no hard disk sound or video. There is no chime or sign of any intelligence. The LED #7 (Checkstop) is on and solid red. I have reseated the video card, and taken out both pairs of memory dimms, rotating the pairs in various slots to eliminate a single dimm or slot. I pressed the SMU reset. I suspect the system board or the power supply. Anyone have a guess on what could cause this and how to test it? Also, anyone know how to get the heatsinks out so I can reseat the processors?

At home I use both...However when I fix the time on Windows Vista that makes the time on Mac OS X wrong...I know this is a dual boot issue...is there any fix for this? View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.
I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.
I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.
I had a weird issue this morning. I started computer and it did not make the chime sound, it didn't do anything at all. I disconnected it from the extension cord as well as all the peripherals attached to it and nothing. I tried a different start up disk and again there wasn't a sound. Then i unplugged it and reset the SMU on the mother board and air sprayed the computer to remove all dust. Then plugged it back and it came back on.

Yesterday I installed Ice Clean and ran a few of the maintenance procedures. This morning when I tried starting my laptop, it started with grey screen and apple symbol, then black screen with white text stating:
Mar 13 08:02:44 launched: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: no such file or directory.
I tried contacting Ice Clean, they claim it is not related. I checked my system profile and I thought I had 1gb of RAM it only says 512gb. Could a RAM failure cause this problem? Have started using target disk mode with my old faithful G4 and everything on the hard disk is still intact. Ran disk utility and all ok!
I have a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz running leopard. It worked flawlessly since the day I bought it.
Then as of last week whenever I booted the computer I would get the gray screen with a black box saying to reboot the computer (in 5 different languages). I would reboot the computer. Same screen.
Is there some way to check what is wrong? Is this typically a hardware issue or an operating system?
I was installing Tiger using FireWire from my Powermac G4 and it was nearly done when my Powerbook (target) died due to lack of battery... When the Powermac was rebooted, I get only a question mark and flashing smile.
I tried to test the C and T keys holding them down during boot up but only get the smiley face every single time... I even disconnected the secondary drive to no avail.

Okay, basically, I've had my PowerBook for a little over 2 years. Over the last few months, it's been incredibly slow. For example, I can only load one or two tabs at a time in Safari before the 'rainbow spinning wheel of death' appears, and takes a couple of minutes to leave, and load the page. This type of thing happens across the board, on pretty much all applications.
