Mac :: 2006 MacBook Won't Start In My System?
Aug 28, 2010
I have a 2006 Core Duo MacBook. I shut it down the other day and nothing unusual happened. But, now when I push the power button there's no response at all. Nothing. No lights, no response, no chimes, no screen flicker.Yes, I've read all posts I can find on this and nothing has helped. I've followed the SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and can't zap PRAM since it doesn't even chime. Battery shows a full five lights and the MagSafe cord shows a green LED. I've tried all sorts of booting with just battery, just power, leaving both out overnight but can't get any sort of response. I don't hear any fan motion or HDD whirring up. The power button doesn't seem to be stuck though--it's flush with the case and still gives that slight tactile "click" when depressed. I checked that the RAM's set properly.

So I was using my early 2006 MacBook (1.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, tiny amount of RAM) to view a YouTube video, and it froze (gave me rotating rainbow thingy). Since this happens often, I got up to put the computer on the table and do something else. When I picked the computer up, the power cord caught on the table and was pulled off of the computer. Since the battery is 100% dead, the computer shut off abruptly. I've also done this before without trouble. When I go to turn it on, however, now the screen flashes white for a split-second (normal), and I get a gray screen. Eventually, I get a flashing folder with ?. I've tried reseating the hard drive, and pressing down various keys when it starts up, but to no avail. I have a Genius Bar appointment tomorrow, but I was wondering if I could fix it for free... I'm not sure what OS it is, but it's OS X Tiger, I think.

It's from late 2006, but the RAM (3GB) and HD (Western Digital 595GB) are not original. That said, I'm confident neither of these are the cause, as I've had 'em installed for 2 years and 4 months, respectively. The problem: I press the power button. Computer makes the starting sound. Fan whirs on. Grayish-blue screen with Apple logo. Spinning tick wheel underneath. You know the drill. But then, it just suddenly and inexplicably turns off. Fan off, black screen, no HD activity. Nothing. Aaand repeat...nothing seems to change.
This started 10 minutes ago. I'm on a friend's computer now, since I'm at college - this also means that I do not have my installation DVD or indeed any of my wide array of computer-fixing tech components save for my mini screwdriver set. Since I know it's gonna come up - The last thing I did on the computer was shut it down while it installed the latest update for Safari (which I don't use). Seemed everything was going okay - it turned off and I left for dinner, came back all set to write an essay and the darn thing won't make it to the login screen. So naturally, there are no error messages or anything like that. No weird beeps or noises from the HD or elsewhere........................

I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....

I am having a problem with my Macbook Pro (OS6.8.8 2.4 GHz Intel core i5). I tried running through all maintenance procedures using Onyx and also tried disc utility to verify disc. Disc utility said to reboot from mother OS and repair harddisc but I can't start up from cd. Tried normal hold down 'C' during restart and also set disc as start-up disc in system preferences but only get a blank screen. The computer when booted from the hard disc (does boot but computer acting 'odd') shows the cd in the cd player and the cd opens so the cd player seems to be working. Also tried an external usb cd player and tried to boot the computer from the cd using this route but get same symptom - just a blank screen and after a short time the cd player stops spinning.
I am concluding that it is not a hardware problem but some software problem that is preventing me from booting from the cd.

I was using my Mac normally. I tried to open iTunes and got an error. I decided to restart the computer. Restarting was going normally, but at the stage of entering username and password, Mac tells me that my startup disk is full. I proceed, Mac recognises password and it gets me to the regular screen and mouse arrow appears. Nothing happens then. No icons, prgrams, nothing. I can't delete anything as I have no icons. What should I do? I tried rebooting few times but get the same thing.

I have a late 2008 2.4 mhz 15 inch MBPro with 2 gb of ram (1+1). I have one recently purchased 2 gb ram chip to replace one of the 1 gb chips so I will have 3 gb of ram (1+2). The MB Pro will not start with the 1+2 in. Do I need two 2 gb chips for the new chip to work?

I bought a used macbook yesterday morning and everything seemed to be working properly at first, but by the end of the day it started having a problem when booting up. 2 gigs of RAM (updated by previous owner)160 gig Hard Drive (updated by previous owner)Everything else is the same as this listing. The problem: when booting up, the screen turns on, but just remains white, without showing the apple logo and spinning circle. I left it like that for a good 10 minutes, and it never continued to boot, it just stayed in that state. I shut it off, then started it in safe mode, which worked fine. From there I restarted it, and it worked normally. The same thing happened again later (white screen, turn off, boot in safe mode, boot normally).

Over heated my battery and it popped out of its casing. Restarted it with no battery and worked fine. Never used the battery because charge rail is no good. Used it this morning to file tax returns. After I finished their was a system update that required a restart and now the computer is stuck on the start up screen with spinning wheel of death.

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OS10.9.x and in an attempt to troubleshoot another issue I moved all the system fonts into a folder on the desktop. I didn't delete the font folder, just moved the fonts. When I went to restart the computer all it would do is flash between a white and gray screen and randomly display a progress wheel but won't start up.

My 3 week old Mac Book Pro just refuses to start up. It gets stuck on the white/grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel under, in other words, the machine won't boot up. I bought the machine new with SL installed, had just been working on it, shut it down properly through the menu, went to eat, tried to start it up and now nothing happends. Except being furious and VERY dispointed on such a new machine,

I have a G5 Dual 2.5 and the power light on the front (white) is lit but nothing happens when I press the power button. I was trying to reset the PRAM manually by pulling the battery and inplugging the unit because my startup shortcut keys were not working. I had seen it recommended to reset it by pulling the battery and reinstalling in other threads. I put the battery back after about 15 sec and plugged in back in. Now it wont start up.

I have a Mac Pro, Intel quad core, with several HDs, 2 of which are bootable. One runs Mac OSX 10.4.9 (and houses Pro Tools HD 7.4) and the other runs 10.5.8 (with Pro Tools HD 8.0.2). The Tiger disk is absolutely fine but the Leopard disk will not boot from a stand-still. It can be booted from Startup Disk in System Preferences but if it was the last drive in use then trying boot from off results in a permanent hang on the grey screen. A workaround is holding ALT on startup and choose the Tiger disk but this shouldn't be happening so has anyone experienced this and solved it? I'm trying to avoid a full re-instal but that is an option.

I've tried searching the web and I read the little book that comes with the computer but I cannot find a concrete answer anywhere. Anyone know the reason for this? I'm not getting any video or anything. It just keeps beeping every couple of seconds.

My battery needed replacing for a couple of months before i dropped it from about knee level onto a sidewalk. After the drop I got the not charging icon. I thought maybe the battery had just finally died. so I did not panic about the no charge. The laptop works fine when plugged in to power with the old battery on or no battery at all. Not at all when unplugged.
When I put the brand new battery on the lap top, the computer shuts down halfway through boot up. I tried holding the power button down through boot up reset, as well as removing all power (plug and battery) and holding down the power button for 10 seconds reset.

My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?

I just bought my MacBook Pro last week. When I power it up, it makes a loud noise for about a second and a half. I think it's the hard drive starting up or the disc drive. I'm not sure which one, but it's pretty loud, so I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this and if it is normal.

I have a MacBook that is running leopard. After running a volume repair that failed I tried to restart my laptop, but when it gets to the blue loading screen, it takes forever and then shuts off. I can still run the Mac os x installer. When I go to disk utility, the Macintosh hd tab is visible, whereas it wasn't available before. Okay scratch that it isn't available anymore. Though, I just clicked on startup disk and it is visible there.

My Mac stats: Mac G5 DT/1.8 GHz / OS 10.5.4 / 2.0 GB SDRAM with all current system downloads; I bought this Mac new from Mac connection approximately three years ago. The problems I've been experiencing for many months:
1. Seldom, but occasionally my Mac will fail to start up causing me to do a forced shutdown by holding in the power button. If I delay doing this for a while (a minute or two), the Mac fan comes on rather loud. After a minute or so after the forced shutdown, I try start up again and Mac starts up OK.
2. Seldom, but occasionally my Mac 'freezes'/cursor will not move, causing me do perform the forced shutdown as described above.
3. When I wake Mac from Sleep mode, there is a 'pop/snap' sound which is very audible depending on the volume setting I am using.
NOTE: In case I had any defective SDRAM modules, I replaced them with new high quality ram modules.

When I log into my System Profiler, I see that I have three items listed to StartUp. These items I do not use.
Now when I go into System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items, these items are not listed.
When I go into my Library, StartupItems is not listed.
I've have run a search for StartupItems on the entire machine but it's not located anywhere. Does anyone have an idea on how I may remove these items from my Start up?
