View 2 RepliesI bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.
So a while back my HD died in my 12" 1.5ghz PowerBook G4. It's been like 2 months and I decided to run the apple hardware test again and to see if I could erase the drive at all before I sell it for parts.
So I put in the OS X CD and held down C. Nothing happens, the screen doesn't even go to the white apple screen or anything. I also tried the good old CD eject button but that didn't work either.
So I restart and hold down the mouse button- nothing happens.
I reset the PMU- the Open Firmware screen comes up and I try ejecting through open firmware but it said something like the device could not be ejected. It will also not let me boot from the CD. The CD drive sounds fine.
I am so confused
1) Why won't my disk eject
2) How can I get it out
I loaded a CD-Rom with some pictures from our kids photo session and it never showed up on the desktop. Now I try to use the eject button and nothing happens. Is there a way to "Force eject" or some equivalent? Odd thing is that when I open iDVD it says that my computer is not equipped with a superdrive. So it sounds as though my drive is not working.

Hi, just wondering if anyone could give me some diagnostic tips with a very unhappy powerbook. Ive tried the Apple support pages, but they didnt do the job so I thought Id look for some helpful experts I will be immensely grateful if you could help me figure out whats wrong.
Its a G4 Power book, running OS 10.4. It suddenly froze on me one day, so I held down the power button to reboot and it hasnt worked since. One thing that I guess could be relevant is that it was pretty much out of disc space it had flashed up the warning a few times in recent days and I was in progress of doing a clean up when it went.
What Ive tried so far:
Normal power up:
Result: Chime, apple logo and spinning logo appear. Stays that way for 4 mins, until screen goes darker grey and You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button. message appears.
Safe boot (with progress status) power up holding shift-command-v:
Result: Chime, apple logo appears, nothing else. Stays like this for ~30 mins until I give up and power down.Reseting PRAM and NVRAM power up holding command-option-p-r
Result: Chime, then restarts and second chime, then does exactly the same as the normal power up.
Next step recommended by the Apple Support site is to start directly from the OSX installation disc but my powerbook already has a CD inserted which I am unable to eject.
Any tips how can I eject? Could the safe reboot take more than 30 mins (bearing in mind it didnt give me any progress indication)? Anything else I should try?
My 12 inch powerbook does not start up. Instead it loads to Darwin. I have an install disk from a 15 inch powerbook G4 and I would like to know if using this would work on my 12 inch powerbook G4?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my Powerbook G4. I kind of screwed up my drivers because I was an idiot and tried to get some Intel drivers to work on the computer through some cheat thing and now my computer won't boot up. I have an install disk but when I try to reinstall it keeps saying that I need Mac OSX Install Disk 2. I never had to use disk 2 before and I never had one to begin with.
View 3 Replies View RelatedCould really use some advice on a PowerBook problem! Unfortunately the PowerBook in question (12" G4) belongs to my mum who lives a fair distance away, so I've not been able to do any 'hands on' diagnostics. Basically she was using the machine yesterday when it randomly started emitting a high pitched squeaking/scratching sound (she described it as screaming though, bless). She called me and I asked her to turn it off - gave it a couple of minutes and asked her to try turning it on again. When she did the computer immediately started making the same noises (even before the startup 'bong' sound). Today one of her friends who is a little tech savvy took a look at it, and figured it must be the hard drive. Fortunately he was able to retrieve all of the important data from the computer whilst enduring ear-splitting screeching.
1. Does it sound like the problem really is the hard drive? It does to me, though I'm not an expert - however would hate to waste money on a replacement drive to find out that wasn't the problem in the first place.
2. Is it worth replacing the drive? Any idea how much it would cost to replace the disk? Is it something that could be done by myself, or would we need to find a specialist repair person to do it? Would it likely be more cost effective to get a new laptop?
The money issue is pretty key as she's in something of a tight spot at the moment, so trying to find the cheapest solution that will get her computer working again asap. As she lives in a rural area and is housebound her laptop is very much a lifeline for her, so would be good to get it sorted.
I have a Powerbook G4 running OS/X 10.4.11 that's never given me any problems. Firefox was acting a little weird, so I restarted. Upon restart, I couldn't get past the grey boot screen with the Apple logo and spinning gear. I booted from the OS/X DVD, and tried running the Disk Utility. It said the volume had an invalid node structure and "The underlying task reported failure on exit." I bought and downloaded Disk Warrior 4 on a friend's MacBook Pro, and tried to connect to the Powerbook via Target Disk Mode. Unfortunately, when I attempt to do this, here's what happens:1. I start the Powerbook while holding down "T". I then see the bouncing Firewire symbol.2. Upon attempting to connect the Firewire cord, the Firewire symbol stops moving, and the Powerbook never shows up on the MBP.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy G4 powerbook has been saying recently that the start up disk is full, so i tried to empty some stuff off it. But not long after this when i tried booting it up the normal happens at first ie the t'ing' start up sound and the apple sign with the little timer going round but it does nothing else, it just carries on going round. I have tried re setting it and looked on help sites like this to try and override it etc but nothing seems to work!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerBook g4 that when i tried to run system restore disk, it does not show my hard drive as an option to mount to.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
I've noticed now that along with disk images not mounting for me anymore. My external drive images or DVD's won't eject either.
When I use right click with Mighty Mouse I don't even see an option anymore to eject that image. Is there any solution out there to fix this glitch? The work around I'm using is unmounting or ejecting images or disks from Disk Utility.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2 and am on an intel iMac.

I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15'' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity?

I have just started getting this pretty annoying error today on my external FW drive.
I want to eject it so I can put some felt pads underneath it as its making a right humming noise on the desk but when i try to eject it i get the error.
Now unless I am missing something, it tells me to quit all apps, yes, ive done that, the only thing that is running is finder. Is there any easy way of finding out what is open on the external drive before I just pull the plug on the whole thing!?
I have a mac mini and i tried getting boot camp up and running.
i was looking through our cd's and i found one that said windows xp installation and system restore disk. thinking this is what i needed, i put it in my mac when it said to insert the cd. then it restarted and went to a black screen (like pc's do when they start up) and it said,Gateway couldn't find an operating system to restore, press R to restore
I cant press anything else and when i press R, nothing happens.
if i unplug it or hold down the power button and turn it back on, it goes to the white apple screen (just before you see the apple logo) and then back to the black system restore screen. if i could get to the desktop i could eject the disk. but i cant.
I put a DVD disk in and can't eject it. I get the eject icon on the screen but nothing happens. How can I get the disk out?
The DVD disk was recorded on my HardDisk Recorder (downstairs) from cable TV. The format is VR mode. That's the HDR recording mode here in Japan when recording from cable. Usually if I try a HDR DVD disk in my Mac it usually ejects easily.
I've tried Disk Utility, Rebooting & drutil tray eject - nothing is working. How can I get the CD out of my drive?

By accident I inserted the Installation disk for the Mac OS X software even though it is already installed into my laptop. I tried ejecting the disk but the eject button would not do anything. I also attempted to hold down the track button while restarting my computer which did eject the disk but resulted in a bunch of small symbols flashing in the middle of my screen so I inserted the disk again. I really don't want to risk losing any of my files by re-installing the Mac OS software so I don't know how to quit the installation process.

My MacBook will accept and play CDs that contain music and data, but it ejects the OS 10.5 install disk and all DVDs after a few seconds of what sounds like it's trying to boot them. I'm running 10.5.8 now, and I need to do some disk repairs but am unable to designate a non-HD startup disk to use for that purpose. I've read several posts in the discussion forums, the last of which stated that this problem was resolved by inserting the disc over and over until it "took." After about 10 times of doing that for the last several minutes, it doesn't appear to be "taking." Another post mentioned an optical drive cleaner as a possible fix, and another concluded that a similar problem was a broken drive. I don't know about the latter, since my MacBook still plays CDs without any problems.

I put a CD in, but it never came up on my desktop so my player never actually read the disk. I've tried alot of ways to eject it, but nothing has worked. down eject and the trackpad. I've also tried to eject it from the startup menu. It sounds like it is trying to eject the disk, but it never comes out.
