I have a 700MHz iMac G3, which froze during DVD playback and it needed to be rebooted. Now it will not boot, the gray screen comes up with the loading circle, but it will just shut down after about a minute. I have reset the PRAM, PMU and it is running 10.4. No beeps or anything when it shuts down, it just turns off.
View 13 RepliesI have a 2009 iMac with SSD drive and 2TB drive.For the last 6 months, I'd get kernel errors every now and again, and I would reboot and things would be fine. A few days ago, the computer totally froze, and when I turned it on, it would shut right off. I tried booting to recovery partition, nothing worked. I took it to the apple store yesterday and they hooked it up to an external drive and then did a diagnostic test and the genius said it needed a fresh install of lion, that something was corrupting it. So we did that (for some reason though, it took about 4 tries for him to get it), and then I took the computer home and ran time machine.
Every thing worked as it should for about 12 hours, I did reboot a few times in that time. Anyways, now, it's back to where it was where I turn it on, there's a status bar on the bottom that fills about halfway and then the iMac shuts down. The apple genius said that a corrupt program/application might be causing that. I find this hard to believe ... I can understand a corrupt program crashing or not starting, but is it possible for that to not allow the computer to even turn on? The other thing is that when the computer crashed a few days ago, I hadn't installed anything new/etc .... ???
My iMac G5 (rev A) shuts down immediately after i put it to sleep mode after just starting up the computer. The longer the computer has been on before I put it to sleep, the longer it takes for the computer to shut down while in sleep mode. I already did the hardware test and it said there were no problems.

I troubleshooted using another website, and found it to be an I/O Error. The issue is I need to reinstall the OS, however, when I boot the install CD it hangs the minute I click the mouse or keyboard.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI picked up this G4 (M6498, 17", 800/256/80HD) from a lady in her 80's whose son sent her a new G5, but I'm having trouble getting it to boot on HD or CD. When I turn it on all I get is a file icon alternating between mac face and "?". Boot from IMAC CD: same thing - I hear the CD track switching a few times periodically but that's it. Boot from OS9 Install CD: same thing. I'm not that familiar with iMac, although I've had a few other Mac machines on and off through the years AppleIIe, PowerMacG3). Any suggestions what to try next?

The next day I turned it on, got the apple and a revolving pinwheel. The picture of the apple was a little broken up. After a minute the pinwheel stopped. Tried to boot of the leopard CD. Same thing happened. Looked inside for swollen capacitors. Did not find any. Does anyone have any ideas as to what can be wrong.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI woke up this morning and my imac wouldn't wake from sleep. then when it finally did I had a all black screen with a few red pixels at the top. the imac wouldn't do anything so I had to hold the power button down and restart. now when I try to turn it on, I hear the apple sound, I get the grey screen (10.4) with the white apple and a spinning circle, then it goes to a light blue screen and just sits there. I still have a cursor and it moves with my mouse.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUpon hitting the power button, it got as far as the Apple logo screen (with chime), and then promptly powered itself down. 6+ subsequent tries have resulted in the same result; it never makes it past the boot sequence. We've tried resetting the PRAM and starting in safe mode, but we get the same result. It's also been plugged into the A/C adapter (and we've tried multiple outlets) so it doesn't appear to be a battery issue.

View 8 Replies View RelatedJust bought a fantastic condition deep-blue 500 MHz G3 DV iMac yesterday for 15. Steal! The original hard drive was knackered so I've replaced it with an 80gb 5400RPM one which should be more than adequate. I'm aiming to get OS X on it. My 350 MHz G3 runs is well, so this should scream. Unfortunately, OS9.0 and OS9.1 disks in the optical drive still produce a flashing folder icon. I need to boot OS9.0 in order to flash the iMac's firmware before I can stick OS X on it, but it just won't boot at all. I'm thinking it could possibly be a knackered optical drive, but before I go to the trouble of finding a workaround, I wondered if anybody here might have some ideas.

I am connecting to an intel iMac, and the g4 has no OS installed on it (I am trying to install tiger using my dvd install dvd, the one with the black background and grey x which the G4 won't read). Does anyone know what could be causing this issue? I've already tried reseting the PMU and PRAM.

About 2-3 weeks ago it started acting a bit flakey....it would lock up on std apps (firefox), it would always lock up after being revived from sleeping etc. I ran the hardware test and everything checked out. Then a few days ago it wouldn't boot. I get the chime, I hear the drive spinning, then the fans kick into high gear and I get a screen with a folder in the middle with a "question mark icon" and a "finder icon" displaying alternatively inside the folder. So I booted up the hardware test dvd and the test failed 27 seconds in with the following error code:

Are there any other steps I should be taking before taking in for service?
Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.
I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).
the other night my girlfriends white 2009 Macbook (was updated to lion) stopped recognizing the battery. Only would boot when plugged into AC. I have other Macs so I tried different power adapters and switching in a battery that I knew was charged from another Macbook, and still did not recognize. Both batteries show 80% full or more when button pressed on battery. I moved it to my office to debug, requiring that I shut down and move the power cord. Then when I booted up, it started shutting down 10 seconds after reboot to user screen. I did the SMC reset and the PRAM resets, did Safe mode checking. Mac would still not "see" the battery or stay on for more then a few seconds even on AC. I then used the Snow Leopard install DVD and disc utilities, did a complete erase of the hard drive and reinstall of the Snow Leopard DVD. That took around 30 minutes, and the Macbook stayed on the entire time during reinstall. 1st boot after reinstall, stayed on long enogh to "set up" a user, then the shutdown problems appeared again.
Not entirely sure, as the power light on the front has been faulty for over a year, so i can not see if it is "on", but if I plug in a thimb drive, the thumb drive light blinks as if it is getting poweer, I would think thta means the computer is on, maybe the display is just shutting off? I do not have the original install discs, just the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 install DVD and a Lion install thumb drive, how can I do a AHT?

We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.
I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?
I tried running the disk utility. It finds the hard drive but wont let me verify/repair permissions (the option is grayed out). It will only let me verify/repair the disk, but it finds no errors. The installer cannot find the disk at all.
We have more than one hard drive in the G4's and the target disk mode will only mount the system drive, it doesnt see the others, so we cannot retrieve out information. Whats going on. Never had this problem before.
Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.
I have a G4 Power Mac. It's the "digital audio" model that has been upgraded with a 1.2Ghz G4 processor. It works well except for one thing. It shuts down randomly and suddenly. Then after 5 or 10 minutes it turns itself back on, reboots and runs fine. (It is set to re-boot after a power failure.)I suspect what is happing is the power supply is turnning itself off due to some kind of a thermal, self protection switch. The fan seems to work but the PS gets warm.What's the cure? Replace the power supply? If so where to get a new(er) one?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI hadn't been using sleep mode on my iMac G5 for a while (but it always worked previously to me setting it to "never"), and now yesterday when I turned the sleep mode back on, it has decided it wants to shut down instead of sleep. But it's not a nice shutdown...it just powers itself off, as if it was unplugged. It always boots back up with no problems.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a power pc and recently installed some new RAM. All worked fine for a few weeks then the computer randomly shut down. I would turn it back on and it would chime but shut down again before it was finished booting. Thinking this was the new RAM I took it out and rebooted. All was fine. To cut a long story short, I now get this problem with any configuration of old RAM and/or new RAM and to allow the computer to boot successfully I have to at least take out a RAM card and then put it back where it came from...
It seems though the new RAM did trigger something but this now happens no matter what RAM is in there. Also, taking RAM out seems to reset something that makes it start up OK. Any ideas what could could causing this..?

I'm facing an issue with my MacBook Pro Mid 2010. It hangs on startup and only shows a white screen with the Apple logo and an activity indicator.
I already tried:
- Replacing the HDD with a new SSD with Mavericks installed (if I put this SSD into another MacBook everything works fine)
- when trying to boot in Safe Mode it reaches about 25% in the progress bar and then shuts down
- same when I boot in Single User Mode
- when I boot in verbose mode I'm getting this output

Two days ago my iBook G4 (about 18 months old) has started to shut down instead of sleeping when I close it or when I select "Sleep" from the menu.
Strangely enough, it seems to only happen when I have iTunes open before I try to put the computer to sleep.
I have this iBook G4 and the wierdest thing is happening. When it is on and you bump it or move it a little it just shuts off like a hard shut down. Has anyone else out there heard of this problem or does anyone know how to fix it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've a MDD G4 dual 1.0 along with the wide acrylic-bezel 20" Mac monitor with the light in the lower right corner. Yep, it's starting to look ancient. But I still have much use for it EXCEPT that it has a very nasty habit of turning itself off catastropically in mid-thought, as it were. Oddly, this behavior comes and goes in spurts. it will hit hard for a couple of weeks then a couple of months will pass with relative peace and stability. Then, back to the crisis.
Sometimes I get a warning from that power-on light in the bezel -- it might flash brighter for an instant, then within a few seconds the whole system loses power just as if I'd turned off my power strip. Other times, it pops in and out of sleep mode for several cycles, but usually this ends the same, with no power at all. Odder still, the machine has a tendency to turn itself on unaided. This can happen even after a controlled shutdown. It turns on, acts normal for 20 minutes, then maybe goes to sleep and wakes up a couple of times, then crashes. No intervention at all on my part at any time. This is not a software shutdown of any controlled variety. Anyone know what's happening? I can't tell you how much gnashing my teeth have endured.
This is about another Mac Laptop.
It is an Ibook G4 1.42 Mhz. It will run well when plugged in. Though when on battery it will just shut down ever so often. Like every 30 minutes and then more often after that.
I was thinking low battery or bad battery. But I put in a new battery and then it did it still?????
What ideas do you have for this??
I did a test on the battery and I do know it is pretty bad. But I do also know I tested this book with a new batter and it still abruptly shuts off completely.
When I sign back on the clock has to be reset each time.
Besides that.. Everything is good.
my daughter bought a used ibook g4 15" and it worked for several months before developing a maddening habit of shutting down without warning. I've read other threads about this with ibooks but they say it happens only when the battery is operating and doesn't happen when plugged in. My daughter's does it either way and will only stay on for ten or so minutes most times before shutting down. It makes the machine unusable. We've checked the power supply and the power input board. Is this a logic board issue? She paid $450 for the computer but the prices have come down and it might not be worth fixing. I can solder and can get into the logic board if someone can tell me what to do.

I've checked the system preferences under energy saver and there are no schedules set for the machine to turn on or off. It does not happen immediately. It usually happens after a day or so. When I return to wake up the machine, it doesn't respond. I then have to start it from the start button. I don't get any error messages regarding the machine shutting down in the wrong way...just boots up normally.
I've had it for 5 years and this is the first time this is happening.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Can my machine be "infected" and controlled externally?
