i have a powermac g4 that is running fine, but when i click on the apple sign and tell it to go to sleep. It goes into sleep mode and then after that shuts down. Is this normal, I think it might be a setting a have to change but I am unsure because this is my first mac.
View 3 RepliesI have an ibook G4 14" 1.42ghz.I have it plugged into a power adapter almost always. It has been plugged in in both instances/I recently put it to sleep and when I return anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple hours it is shut down. I have a heck of a time getting it to power on. It took me several times, anywhere from 3-6 times to get it to turn on.
When I turn it on it goes through the usual loading procedures and after loading a window pops up saying the date and time are wrong and could cause applications to act erratically. The date ends up being 1969 and sometimes the time is wrong.
I have fixed the date and it still happens.
I don't know if this has affected or led to this but my battery has been shot for a couple months now and occasionally (probably 1-2 times a day) the power adapter (a cheap copy of apple's) would become unplugged from the laptop prompting the message stating you are on reserve battery and that the computer will go to sleep soon.
Does anyone know what is causing this? How much would it cost to fix it?
My iMac G5 (rev A) shuts down immediately after i put it to sleep mode after just starting up the computer. The longer the computer has been on before I put it to sleep, the longer it takes for the computer to shut down while in sleep mode. I already did the hardware test and it said there were no problems.

I have to press the power button for around 30 seconds to start the machine. In the logs I could find--Shutdown due to error code --79 and sleep failure shutdown.

Is it strange that my MacBook now just shuts down when it runs out of battery instead of just going into sleep mode? It's about two weeks old now. It used to go into sleep mode, but now it just shuts down once the battery is down. Also, I had the most wonderful experience with Apple. My first macbook (three weeks ago) had a small chip on the screen. When I finally noticed it, I thought it was a large piece of dust so it wasn't too terrible. I tried to exchange it at the local store where I purchased it, but it had already been four days and I had cut out the UPC for the printer and ipod rebate the day before and sent it out. So they recommended that I go see a mac genius and see if I can get the screen replaced because I could no longer exchange it or return it (risk losing my rebates).
So, a bit upset that I was too prompt about getting the rebates in, I scheduled an appointment with a genius. When I spoke to him, he just went to the back and got the manager. The manager said instead fixing the screen, he'd liked to give me a new macbook and instant reimbursement for the ipod and printer! (the rebates I sent in will be rejected since the mac has been returned). The new macbook I noticed has a much louder superdrive seems to be working hard every time the computer wakes up and when I open it, but that definitely beats a chip on the screen. But now it doesn't go to sleep after the battery gets low, but instead shuts off.
My daughter's macbook pro is supposed to sleep when the lid is closed but it usually shuts off the hard drive instead. She has a 15", 2010 model with the latest software and updates.

I notice the sleep light blinks rapidly a few times then when my cord goes back in things restore? Edit: My macbookpro is a Unibody which is less then 6 months old. I received it as a replacement unit from apple (due to a lemon macbookpro i originally had) Which i figured means that the battery cant be bad, i take extremely good care of my computer.

I continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%). Just then I had to receive a phone call. When I was busy talking, I noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode but when I returned (2-3 mins later), I found it shut down. Well, I think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didn't.
Then after an hour I connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which I saw for the first time. I have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now. Also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %. istat shows this. Is this normal? So what I want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low? OR there is some problem in my MBP?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a G4 Power Mac. It's the "digital audio" model that has been upgraded with a 1.2Ghz G4 processor. It works well except for one thing. It shuts down randomly and suddenly. Then after 5 or 10 minutes it turns itself back on, reboots and runs fine. (It is set to re-boot after a power failure.)I suspect what is happing is the power supply is turnning itself off due to some kind of a thermal, self protection switch. The fan seems to work but the PS gets warm.What's the cure? Replace the power supply? If so where to get a new(er) one?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI hadn't been using sleep mode on my iMac G5 for a while (but it always worked previously to me setting it to "never"), and now yesterday when I turned the sleep mode back on, it has decided it wants to shut down instead of sleep. But it's not a nice shutdown...it just powers itself off, as if it was unplugged. It always boots back up with no problems.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a power pc and recently installed some new RAM. All worked fine for a few weeks then the computer randomly shut down. I would turn it back on and it would chime but shut down again before it was finished booting. Thinking this was the new RAM I took it out and rebooted. All was fine. To cut a long story short, I now get this problem with any configuration of old RAM and/or new RAM and to allow the computer to boot successfully I have to at least take out a RAM card and then put it back where it came from...
It seems though the new RAM did trigger something but this now happens no matter what RAM is in there. Also, taking RAM out seems to reset something that makes it start up OK. Any ideas what could could causing this..?
Two days ago my iBook G4 (about 18 months old) has started to shut down instead of sleeping when I close it or when I select "Sleep" from the menu.
Strangely enough, it seems to only happen when I have iTunes open before I try to put the computer to sleep.
I have this iBook G4 and the wierdest thing is happening. When it is on and you bump it or move it a little it just shuts off like a hard shut down. Has anyone else out there heard of this problem or does anyone know how to fix it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've a MDD G4 dual 1.0 along with the wide acrylic-bezel 20" Mac monitor with the light in the lower right corner. Yep, it's starting to look ancient. But I still have much use for it EXCEPT that it has a very nasty habit of turning itself off catastropically in mid-thought, as it were. Oddly, this behavior comes and goes in spurts. it will hit hard for a couple of weeks then a couple of months will pass with relative peace and stability. Then, back to the crisis.
Sometimes I get a warning from that power-on light in the bezel -- it might flash brighter for an instant, then within a few seconds the whole system loses power just as if I'd turned off my power strip. Other times, it pops in and out of sleep mode for several cycles, but usually this ends the same, with no power at all. Odder still, the machine has a tendency to turn itself on unaided. This can happen even after a controlled shutdown. It turns on, acts normal for 20 minutes, then maybe goes to sleep and wakes up a couple of times, then crashes. No intervention at all on my part at any time. This is not a software shutdown of any controlled variety. Anyone know what's happening? I can't tell you how much gnashing my teeth have endured.
I have a 700MHz iMac G3, which froze during DVD playback and it needed to be rebooted. Now it will not boot, the gray screen comes up with the loading circle, but it will just shut down after about a minute. I have reset the PRAM, PMU and it is running 10.4. No beeps or anything when it shuts down, it just turns off.

It is an Ibook G4 1.42 Mhz. It will run well when plugged in. Though when on battery it will just shut down ever so often. Like every 30 minutes and then more often after that.
I was thinking low battery or bad battery. But I put in a new battery and then it did it still?????
What ideas do you have for this??
I did a test on the battery and I do know it is pretty bad. But I do also know I tested this book with a new batter and it still abruptly shuts off completely.
When I sign back on the clock has to be reset each time.
Besides that.. Everything is good.
my daughter bought a used ibook g4 15" and it worked for several months before developing a maddening habit of shutting down without warning. I've read other threads about this with ibooks but they say it happens only when the battery is operating and doesn't happen when plugged in. My daughter's does it either way and will only stay on for ten or so minutes most times before shutting down. It makes the machine unusable. We've checked the power supply and the power input board. Is this a logic board issue? She paid $450 for the computer but the prices have come down and it might not be worth fixing. I can solder and can get into the logic board if someone can tell me what to do.

I've checked the system preferences under energy saver and there are no schedules set for the machine to turn on or off. It does not happen immediately. It usually happens after a day or so. When I return to wake up the machine, it doesn't respond. I then have to start it from the start button. I don't get any error messages regarding the machine shutting down in the wrong way...just boots up normally.
I've had it for 5 years and this is the first time this is happening.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Can my machine be "infected" and controlled externally?
I have done all those PMU resetting stuff. The problem is that my iBook (1GHz, 768MB RAM, Tiger 10.4.3) keeps shutting off when I run it on battery. While plugged in there doesn't seem to be a problem. Here's what I've found out: This seems to happen only when I run the iBook from the battery. There is no pattern as to when it will happen: It might be fully charged, at 70%, 50%, etc. There are no warnings: The iBook just dies
To restart it I have to plug in the charger, I can't start it from the battery after one of these sudden deaths
If I press the battery indicator after a crash, it doesn't show any charge - no green lights
When I restart the machine the battery indicator will work, and it show's a charge in Tiger as well
I've done all that PMU resetting, PRAM resetting, etc. Doesn't work. Any ideas as to what this could be? Bad battery?
One more thing: I've run the hardware test, and it doesn't come up with anything at all.
Coconut Battery shows that my battery should hold a charge as well. Max charge is still at 3500mAh, 18 months and 750 cycles after I got the iBook.
My wife has a three-year old iBook G4 and yesterday while she was doing some work, the screen just went black. By the time she brought it to me the machine was shut down. I hit the power button and it started to boot up, but about five seconds later it shut itself down again.
I kept playing with it and I was able to get back in to OS X and I played with it for a few minutes and all seemed fine. I then shut the screen and put it to sleep, then when I tried to wake it back up it shut itself down once again.
After a few more tries of getting it back in to the OS I was able to get all her files off the hard drive, but the problem is still there.
My guess is that it's the logic board, but that's just a guess.
I have a Dual 2.0 Powermac G5 that has been shutting down without notice. It first started doing this every couple of days. I'd have to let the computer sit for a few hours before it would run again. Now it does it more and more frequently and stays running ofr less and less time. As of now, it will only stay on for 15 minutes before suddenly shutting down.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an iBook used from someone locally. I got a good price because he said the battery was weak. However, I want to make sure that's actually the case. The power cord connection is not loose.
Coconutbattery says my battery is 36% health, but it also says it's not plugged into the charger when it actually is, so I don't know how reliable this program is. It says my mac is 27 months old, i have 367 cycles on the battery... etc. And I am running Tiger.
The problem is that the power meter on the top bar will say i've got a full charge... so I run the computer (on battery) down to about 60% according to the meter, but the computer instantly shuts off. I try to reboot, and it shuts off while rebooting. It's like the battery works fine and suddenly dies. I get about 30-40 minutes use out of the battery.
Is this the battery or do I have other problems? This only happens when using the battery.
I was hoping you could get me started in the right direction. My wife has an iBook G4 which lately, while using a full battery, just turns off suddenly. There is no warning and it never does it when it's plugged in. The battery looks like it's almost fully charged - at least that's what the meter in the menu says, so I don't know what's going on.
Could you possibly give me some steps to go through to try and figure this out?
The first step she wants to try is to get a new Intel MacBook, but I'd like to try a couple of other things first!
