OS X V10.7 Lion :: IMac Starts To Boot And Then Shuts Off?
Feb 4, 2012
I have a 2009 iMac with SSD drive and 2TB drive. For the last 6 months, I'd get kernel errors every now and again, and I would reboot and things would be fine. A few days ago, the computer totally froze, and when I turned it on, it would shut right off. I tried booting to recovery partition, nothing worked. I took it to the apple store yesterday and they hooked it up to an external drive and then did a diagnostic test and the genius said it needed a fresh install of lion, that something was corrupting it. So we did that (for some reason though, it took about 4 tries for him to get it), and then I took the computer home and ran time machine.
Every thing worked as it should for about 12 hours, I did reboot a few times in that time. Anyways, now, it's back to where it was where I turn it on, there's a status bar on the bottom that fills about halfway and then the iMac shuts down. The apple genius said that a corrupt program/application might be causing that. I find this hard to believe ... I can understand a corrupt program crashing or not starting, but is it possible for that to not allow the computer to even turn on? The other thing is that when the computer crashed a few days ago, I hadn't installed anything new/etc .... ???

I have an old g4 , the kind shaped like half a golf ball, which starts up and then quits at different places during the process. Sometimes with the gray screen and Apple logo, sometime later when the OS has fully installed, but fails quite rapidly after that. Then tries to reboot itself with varying degrees of failure.

I have a 700MHz iMac G3, which froze during DVD playback and it needed to be rebooted. Now it will not boot, the gray screen comes up with the loading circle, but it will just shut down after about a minute. I have reset the PRAM, PMU and it is running 10.4. No beeps or anything when it shuts down, it just turns off.

Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this or if any experts out there know of the issue.
I have a spare White Macbook (late 2008: Core 2 Duo 2.1GHz, 1GB, 120GB) that I'd like to set up for my brother to use to introduce him to the wonderful world of Macs. The problem it is having is that when I have a battery connected to it (I tried 2 different ones included a known-good one that is brand-new just purchased from Apple) it powers on and gives me the chime, but then immediately shuts off unexpectedly giving that little "whine" sound like if it just lost power all of a sudden. However, when i take out the battery, and just plug it into the Magsafe AC charger it works fine. Also when just trying to run on battery it does not turn on at all. Here's some cliffs:
1) Macbook with just battery does not turn on
2) Macbook with battery + Magsafe AC charger connects powers on, gives the chime, but then immediately shuts off making the "whine" sound as if the power was suddenly cut off
3) Macbook with no battery connected and just the Magsafe AC charger connected works fine.
Do you guys think this is either:
A) battery connector issue (the little piece with the metal wires that the battery connects to. ~$50 part)
B) Logic Board issue
I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU to no avail.

I can turn on my mac, the beach ball starts spinning and stays spinning for awhile, finally starts up but then quickly shuts back down? I have never encountered this type of problem with my desktop before! I have checked all the power supplies and reset the powercord, I unplugged the computer and tried to reboot it to no avail. Does anyone know how to do the type of reboot where you hold down the power button and two keys (?) wait for the 2nd chime then let go of the keys? I believe that is how it's done.

My MacBook Pro will not start. It chimes and the gray progress bar starts and then the computer shuts off. I am able to start it holding the Command +R keys and access Disk Utility. That is where it says my S.M.A.R.T. drive is "failing". I have a backup from Time Machine from a week ago. I am concerned the computer is going to die. What should I do and is my computer going to die?.

A few days ago I updated to Lion 10.7 with which I have had no problem. A day later I installed Moneywiz, Skydrive for mac and did some updates of various software. Since then, if starting from cold, my imac starts in safe mode. I get the start-up sound; then the white screen with Apple logo; then the spinning sun; then the progress bar; then the grey screen with "safe mode" in the top right and user log-in (although I don't have log-in set in my options). Once running in safe mode I can shut-down and re-start; or just re-start and it will load properly. I have tried starting with mouse/keyboard on/off. Is this a Lion thing or what.

My MacBook is making the startup sound but goes straight to a black/dark grey screen. In other words you can see the screen switching on but it's blank. It's in charge mode, has no other external peripherals attached and it's updated to most recent OSX Yosemite.
I only purchased it in May of this year (refurbished). I have tried booting in to safe mode but again the screen remains the same.

Upon hitting the power button, it got as far as the Apple logo screen (with chime), and then promptly powered itself down. 6+ subsequent tries have resulted in the same result; it never makes it past the boot sequence. We've tried resetting the PRAM and starting in safe mode, but we get the same result. It's also been plugged into the A/C adapter (and we've tried multiple outlets) so it doesn't appear to be a battery issue.

the other night my girlfriends white 2009 Macbook (was updated to lion) stopped recognizing the battery. Only would boot when plugged into AC. I have other Macs so I tried different power adapters and switching in a battery that I knew was charged from another Macbook, and still did not recognize. Both batteries show 80% full or more when button pressed on battery. I moved it to my office to debug, requiring that I shut down and move the power cord. Then when I booted up, it started shutting down 10 seconds after reboot to user screen. I did the SMC reset and the PRAM resets, did Safe mode checking. Mac would still not "see" the battery or stay on for more then a few seconds even on AC. I then used the Snow Leopard install DVD and disc utilities, did a complete erase of the hard drive and reinstall of the Snow Leopard DVD. That took around 30 minutes, and the Macbook stayed on the entire time during reinstall. 1st boot after reinstall, stayed on long enogh to "set up" a user, then the shutdown problems appeared again.
Not entirely sure, as the power light on the front has been faulty for over a year, so i can not see if it is "on", but if I plug in a thimb drive, the thumb drive light blinks as if it is getting poweer, I would think thta means the computer is on, maybe the display is just shutting off? I do not have the original install discs, just the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 install DVD and a Lion install thumb drive, how can I do a AHT?

I'm facing an issue with my MacBook Pro Mid 2010. It hangs on startup and only shows a white screen with the Apple logo and an activity indicator.
I already tried:
- Replacing the HDD with a new SSD with Mavericks installed (if I put this SSD into another MacBook everything works fine)
- when trying to boot in Safe Mode it reaches about 25% in the progress bar and then shuts down
- same when I boot in Single User Mode
- when I boot in verbose mode I'm getting this output
jnl: disk0s2: open: journal checksum is bad (0xbff2db8 != 0xbff35a0)
jnl: disk0s2: replay_journal: from: 10668032 to: 12240896 (joffset 0x747000)
jnl: disk0s2: replay_journal: bogus block number 0x907a985480c1ad24
jnl: disk0s2: no known good txn start offset! aborting journal replay.
[Code] .....
Then the MacBook shuts down.

This morning, I would turn it on and it'd go to the grey screen with the Apple logo for a few seconds and then go to the icon that is a circle with a line through it. After reading online, I was able to boot it up in Safe Mode. I went to Startup Disk in Preferences. I chose the MAC OS X, xxxx and then clicked the lock to prevent further changes and then clicked restart. Now when I turn on the macbook, it goes to the grey screen with the Apple logo for at least two-three minutes and then just shuts off. Won't boot into Safe Mode now. I already tried the Command-Option-P-R keys trick like five times.

But as soon as I switch on any of the windows PC on the both sides, the modem gets crazy and the whole line gets unstable.
Like the internet starts going on and off continuously.
I dont understand, what is the reason.

Over the last few weeks when I have been starting my computer up I get the white blank screen for a few mins then it goes to a flashing globe for a few more mins then the apple sign then it finally starts. I have been thinking about taking my computer in to get it fixed cause I cant seem to figure out whats wrong with it. I have looked it up on google and everyone seems to be saying to go to startup disk and then pick the right network volume to start up from, but when I go there there is only one choice its called "Network Startup" and there is a globe with a ? on it for the symbol. Also I read a couple places that its the hard drive warning me that its crashing? is this true? I also have had a couple freezes the last couple days.

In the last three days my iMac desktop has begun starting itself up. There is an audible beeping (three or four beeps) and the on/off indicator light blinks rapidly. When the screen comes up there is no desktop but a gray background with reboot instructions. When I type the reboot words "mac-reboot" the desktop comes back.
Under Logs in the system profiler I see the following message:
CGXDDisableUpdate:Updates disabled by connection 0x66-3 for over 1.000000 seconds
and
CGXBlindSurface returns-536870210
The computer is rather old, is running OS X 10.2.8 and has never done anything like this before.

My iMac (21.5") turn off by itself and it doesn't turn on until I unplug the AC from the back and let it rest for at least half hour!!! If I try to turn it on I only get fan and drive noise but no screen at all... The longest time I let it rest, the more time that I can use it. I already reset PRAM. I'm runing 10.6.3 and the biggest software I use is ArchiCAD 13...
Does anybody have a similar issue with his/her iMac?
PS. Sorry, I don't speak/write good English but I did my best...

downloaded the newsest updates from Apple and now my computer won't start up. Goes to long in screen and won't let you type in pass word. Spinning Beach Ball of Death comes up and never stops.
I just keep shutting it down ( push off button on the back until it shuts off) and trying to start it again. Some times it will let you get a little farther, but always after 2-3 minutes it goes to SBBOD.
Lates thing I did was push option+command+S when I turned it back on and now screen is black and has a bunch of code. Been at this stage for 30 minutes now. It is not pluged into the internet at the moment.

I'm looking to wave good bye to my MacBook Pro running Leopard and upgrade.
However, I need to keep a version of Leopard so I can run certain Audio Units that won't run on Snow Leopard or Lion.
I have made a bootable drive with Leopard on it, but I can't get it to boot on my iMac running Lion. It boots fine using the MacBook though.
Is what I'm looking to do possible any more, or do I need to configure the drive for use with a Lion machine somehow?

I have an iMac G5 that is starting up, then working okay for 1-2 minutes. After that, the processor usage goes way up, and the fans start spinning loudly. It's a first generation 1.8 GHz with a 17" display. Mac OS X Leopard. Recently, it spun up and then shut down and wouldn't start again. The room it's in is < 75 degrees F. No malodor, or other symptoms save for hot to the touch. Has been left shut off and unplugged for a few hours, and still has this problem.

I recently updated to snow and since then have had problems turning off mac. I've reset pram, tried unplugging externals, tried logging out, then shutting down, but every time I hit apple-shutdown it goes black, and reboots. I can put it the screen to sleep with hot corners, but never turns off unless I manually hold down power.

I have an old iMac G3 (400mhz slot loading) that I got second hand for free. When I first got it, it seemed to work perfectly in every way, but the hard disk wasn't very big so I tried to install a new (larger) one. Everything seemed to go fine, but after the upgrade, the computer would only stay powered on for about 10 minutes before shutting itself off. I assumed that it was a problem with the hard disk, so I put the old one back, but the problem persisted. It will only stay powered on for a maximum of about 20 minutes before blinking off and then it has to sit for a while before I can get another 20 miutes out of it

Have a 17" G5 iMac iSight (OS 10.5.8) that works normally for several hours and then the CPU temperature suddenly spikes and the computer shuts itself down. When I check the Temperature Monitor (application) history graph, it shows normal temperatures and then a spike. There are 3 fans and I don't know which is failing or whether there's something in the temperature sensing that's gone haywire. My only solution is to do a forced restart. By this time, things have cooled and it will work for several hours.

Sometimes when I turn my iMac on, it'll start doing its thinglight comes on, chime goes, fan whirrs, but then it'll make a strange click/"werrrrh" noise and turn off. It's happened twice to me since I've brought it home from school and each time I just tilted the monitor around while turning it on and it worked.I have been avoiding turning off / restarting my computer because I'm afraid its going to happen and I won't be able to get past it.Could the powersupply be loose or something?
