Mar 8, 2008Can you add memory to an iBook G4. And can the new AirPort extreme card be installed in the same computer. It has an AirPort Extreme but I don't think its the newest one.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Max Memory And 10.5 Upgrade?
Jan 25, 2010I was wondering what is the max memory that I can put on my iBook G4. My G4 (12 inch) has 128 MB DDR SDRAM soldered in place and has a 800 MHz PowerPC G4 Processor. I was wondering what is the most memory I could install and what is recommended? Also I am only running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. Is it possible for me to update to 10.5 or higher? Sometimes when running videos on google video or youtube it gets choppy and lags what fixes this problem. A message pops up about quicktime not up to date but I try and do a software update and it says that my software is up to date could this be because of the older software?

Jul 4, 2008I have a Powerbook G4 that I wanted to upgrade to 1.5G from 512MB. So I added Corsair 1GB DDR RAM to the notebook and it seems to have issues recognizing both at the the same time. When I put both of them in together, it never seems to recognize the bottom slot. Putting in the 512MB in the bottom w/o the 1GB the Powerbook boots up fine. Putting in the 1GB by itself and it gives beeping noises on bootup, but it'll boot up if I put it on the top slot.

Oct 24, 2006My professor uses her macbook pro along with her apple remote to advance her slides. I unfortunately can't afford a new macbook (being a starving college student), and I really like the ability to advance powerpoint with the apple remote (via 3rd party software). I have a research presentation coming up at the end of the semester, and the classroom that we're in does not have remote control for presentations. My question is, is there anything that I can purchase to add this type of functionality to my iBook G4 (14" 1.24GHz 512MB).
I was actually wondering also if attaching a universal iPod dock paired with the apple remote might provide this? I'm gonna consult the Geeks at the Apple Store in Manhattan when I go on Saturday, but I'd thought I'd ask here first.

Oct 19, 2006I feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?

Aug 4, 2007The other day, I put more ram into 2 12-inch ibooks - my own 1.0 ghz, and my wife's 1.33 ghz (Yes, I know she has the faster machine. It means I'm the next to upgrade). Anyway, this is the first time I had opened them up at all and I saw something that confused me: I know that ibooks have only one available expansion slot for ram. That's what I saw on mine. But on my wife's, it looked like there was a second slot lower down, just below where I installed the ram, but missing the clips to hold the ram in place.
Is this in fact a second ram expansion slot, or is it just the shape of it that makes it appear to be one, or is it a second slot that is somehow unsupported or unable to be used? My guess is that it's just the shape of the hardware, and it only appears to be a second ram slot, but isn't really. But wouldn't it be sweet if there was in fact another usable slot in the ibook?
PowerPC :: IBook G4: Invalid Memory Access Error
Nov 9, 2008I have an iBook G4 1.33 14". The computer all the sudden wont boot anymore and the file/smiley blinks. I tried the Apple Hardware Test CD and got the Invalid Memory Access Error:%SRRO: 00032ed8 %SRR1: 0003030
I tried to boot from the startup CD and once the CD kicked in the screen froze, and other times it says the computer needs to be restated.I removed the ram under the keyboard and still got the same error. I also Zapped the PRAM, Reset the PMU and still no luck.Any suggestions? I love this Mac and currently can't go out and buy a new one.

Nov 16, 2007I own a 900 MHz G3 ibook (v2.3) with 256 MB of ram running 10.2.8. It's been good to me, but over the years it's performance has started to decrease. Most applications load up and run fine, but web browsers can become a little slow when I have multiple windows or tabs open. What should I do to get rid of this problem? Upgrade the memory to 640MB of ram? Update the OS to 10.4?

Mar 21, 2009I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

Feb 18, 2009Can I upgrade my ibook 10.2.8 OS X to a higher version? If so how? If not, better to get a new computer? I was trying to install a broadband modem but requires OS of 10.3 or higher.
I'm not computer savvy but can understand enough to get by, as long as it's plain English. I want to be able to use my laptop to access the internet, anywhere & anytime.
PowerPC :: G4 Ibook Battery No Go After Hard Drive Upgrade
Aug 1, 2007I have g4 ibook 14" 1.33. I spent 2 hours unscrewing at least a hundred screws and trying to pry the white shell open. Finally I was able to locate the HD and replaced it with a new one. Screwed everything back in, crossed my fingers, and the thing booted up--hurray! Unfortunately, now the battery says 97% but it is not charging. The cord light is ever green and when I pulled the plug, it shuts down. So much for 97%. I tried all the pmu, reset-all, taking it in and out a dozen times (5-12seconds intervals), etc. Did I screw up something during the disassembly/reassembly?

I am trying to run CS3, and some things are extreemely jumpy. i am wondering if this is because of resolution or if I need a video card(CS3 requires a 16 bit video card), or maybe hard drive? (i have 30gb-9gb free).

May 7, 2009I just took delivery of a clamshell ibook that I bought from ebay last week and have been wondering whether OSX would run well or not on it.
The specs are:
Indigo Firewire version
366mhz G3
193mb ram
10GB Hard drive
Airport fitted
Att the moment it is running OS9 very smoothly indeed, and I don't have enough cash at the moment to upgrade it in any way. I would leave OS9 on it, however I have never used the operating system before, so wondered whether it would be wise to upgrade it to panther, as I have a copy lying around. My concern is that installing panther would leave the machine feeling much slower, as I'd rather have a faster machine that can't do as much than a machine can do most things but takes ages to open up the finder.

May 1, 2010I was planning to upgrade our family's computers to a new MBP 13 inch with a 320 HDD and a iMac 3.06 GHz base model.
I was going to do a the Apple financing of no interest for 18 months since the 13 inch MBP came out but after reading online that an iMac update may be out in the near future I am wondering if I should wait.
Would like advice on whether I should just buy the 2 computers now and not worry or should I wait for next iMac. We have five kids that are using the computers and iPhones/iPods and speed is what they want for web-based games. The iBook is fine for me doing Quicken, e-mail and normal stuff but is seizing up sometimes. Hard Drive space is biggest issue since iMac only has around 160 gig HDD.
Everything I have read I believe that these 2 computers will be fine. We hold computers for 5 years and so I am getting to end of life on the ones I have.
My wife has also been using a 2006 circa MacBook Pro 17 inch that I use for work and loves it. She thought the 13 inch MBP keyboard was smaller but I told her I believe they are the same.
Adding Memory To 2010 Mac Pro
May 8, 2012I have a 2010 Mac Pro, 2x2.4ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. There is a currently 6gb of RAM installed, and two open slots: url...I'm looking at purchasing either an 8gb or 16gb module from here: url...Will one of those modules work fine with what is currently installed in my computer? Would it be worth doing two 8gb modules rather than one 16gb? This would be cheaper but not sure how performance would compare.

Power Mac G5 :: Adding Memory - Does RAM Need To Be Paired?
Dec 13, 2007I'm upping the RAM in two PowerMac G5's. One is an early 2005 DUAL 2G. The other is the later 2005 DUAL 2.3. They currently have the stock RAM that came with them: 512MB for the Dual 2.0G; and 1GB for the Dual 2.3. I'd like to get them both up to between 2-4GB's each. I'm willing to go with third party RAM if it's at all compatible, ya' know the Kingston kinda stuff. That's all I can afford to bring them up to par with RAM.
Is there any standard compatibility issues when running RAM outside of OEM stuff? Also, does the RAM need to be paired? or even numbered? For example, if I had 2GB+512MB of RAM in one machine would this work? Do they have to be even in slot usage? Also, if third party compatible, would any matching spec RAM work or is there something "APPLE" specific about RAM? Example: G5-dual 2.3 requires 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200).... would any matching spec RAM work?

Sep 6, 2009If you add more memory to your MacPro and keep the original memory in the slots but for some reason that memory isn't being read, It looks like tht memory is not compatible with the new memory.
So, will keeping the memory in there mess up the system?

I've heard OWC is pretty good all around, but it appears to be that they're only compatible up to 2007 imacs, so I'm assuming that wouldn't work for my computer. Aug 13, 2010I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
PowerPC :: Hard Drive Swapping - IBook G3 And IBook G4
Oct 20, 2006My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
ITunes :: 10.6 Upgrade Crashing When Adding Music And Now At Launch
Mar 9, 2012It first started when I tried to add music files to iTunes by draggin them into my library. It began processing and adding them to my library, but then crashed.After this, I tried reopening iTunes, and it crashes on launch.This now happens every time. I can't open my iTunes.
I've tried deleting the added files out of my iTunes folder, and I'm still getting crashing.I've even tried re-installing iTunes -- no luck
