PowerPC :: Ibook G4 Not Verifying Seagate Freeagent Pro 500 GB Harddrive?
Jan 13, 2009
i am new to this forum and everybody seams nice, but i have come over a problem, my ibook g4 1.33ghz, 512 ram, 40 GB harddrive, 12.1 inch runing leopard 10.5.6. is now not verifying my external harddrive i have a seagate freeagent pro 500 GB. it was working fine for almost a half of a year. i know that the harddrive has a 5 year worinty but i dont want to lose all my stuff on the harddrive because i have most of my stuff on there like all of my photography stuff. and it asks me if i want to verify the drive or repair the drive and i tryed both of them and it says it failed both so then its telling me to back all of the files up and erase the disk and i dont have anywere to put all my files because the internal 40 GB harddrive isnt enough space to back it all up. so what i would like to know if there is another way to do this ?

I just bought a
Seagate 750GB Freeagent External HD, w/USB, Firewire, and most importantly eSata connections. (Model # ST307504FPA1E3-RK)
I wanted to get it going immediately, and living in NYC I also bought the only PCI-X card I could find from Tekserve, a
Lacie Sata II 3Gb/s PCI-X Card 4E
I installed the card and driver on my Powermac G5 Dual 2.0, (10.4.10), and although System Profiler recognizes the card on the PCI bus, it will not recognize the drive through the Esata connection. I tried all four of the ports, and nothing. Disk utility shows nothing there.
The G5 does recognize the drive through the USB 2.0 connection.
I don't know whether this card is compatible or not, and I can't find any information on what would be online.
Does anyone know how I can get the eSata to work?

I've just bought a new Seagate Freeagent drive to replace my old one. I remember I had to follow a procedure to change it from FAT32 to OSX Extended, when I just press erase I get an error.
Can anyone help? I'm going out of my mind here.

I purchased this

Seaagent Go Portable I guessed it would work with my 3 year old tiger iMac. However, it is not appearing on my desktop or in disk utility despite the lights being on. I have the 320 GB and it works just fine. I thought disk utility worked with any HDD?

Hi, I bought a 160 gb Seagate FreeAgent Go 160gb a while back and it's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's working great but lately a lot of my friends have been wanting the files I have on my Mac and when I go to plug it into a PC it doesn't read the drive. Is there a format where I can plug it in on my Mac and add files and use them and then also plug it into a PC later and take the files off? Some of these files are pretty big.

I want to get an external hard drive for my ibook g4 (mac os x 10.4.11). I was leaning toward getting a WD My Passport Essential because it's compatible with macs and pcs. However a lot of the reviews I've read have said that WD external hard drives crash within a few months and that just sounds like a lot of stress to me. The Seagate FreeAgent Go has gotten better reviews so now I am thinking of getting it. However you have to reformat it in order for it to work on a mac. Anyone know how difficult this is to do or how to do it?

i currently have a few year old 320gb WD external HD to backup my MBP's data plus RAW camera files. i wanted to replace it with something a little bit larger and something that doesn't require external power.
i stumbled upon seagate's FA Go series a while back and am thinking about buying the 500gb version. Amazon is currently running a special where you can get a free dock along with it. i have read multiple reviews that mention the dock and some say you need to use two USB cables with the dock, others say the ports just need to be powered.
the dock would be a nice accessory to have, but my MBP only has two USB ports and one is always being used for my keyboard. can the hard drive be used with only one USB while in the dock? or can it only be used with one USB when mounted by itself?

I have heard of a lot of issues with Seagate desktop drives so I would never buy one, but I had never heard of problems with their laptop drives so I took a chance a while back and got a FreeAgent Go 640GB external at Fry's. I have it partitioned into 3 partitions, 2 for backups (L 10.5 and SL 10.6) and one for data. Lately it has gotten to where the SL partition will not automatically mount when I plug it into my aluminum iMac running either 10.5 or 10.6, and will only mount the SL partition when I bring up Disk Utility. When I try to eject the disk it just hangs after graying out the partitions in Finder. I have tried this with both 10.5 and 10.6, and with both keyboard ports and with rear panel ports with no difference. I am about to reformat the FreeAgent and start over again, but I thought I would ask first if anybody else has experienced anything like this.

After reading all the helpful hints i knew that when i had an issue i would come here. The day has come.
I'm running a home studio and I have a Freeagent Pro 500G model that streams my audio and midi to my Macbook Pro. (penryn 2008) Just the other day when i fired the equipment up, my external drive wasn't recognized by OSX. I don't understand why, because it seems to be spinning up and everything. I have tons of important sessions on this drive, and can't believe it might be dead. I've gone straight to the computer via firewire, into my interface via firewire and out again, tried absolutely everything. the drive just won't come up on my desktop! I tried flashing the PRAM, and i'm at my wits end now to come up with a solution, even if it's as temporary as backing up the data on the drive! Too much money is at stake to be messing around with it right now. I can say that I'm totally buying a Glyph as soon as i get this figured out.

I have a white g3 ibook dual usb. I put in a bigger hard drive and can't install tiger which is a cd not dvd that boots fine in my imac. Cd drive will not eject with eject (f12) key or fn f12. I have to pull it open manually. I can reset the nvram by booting into firmware and typing reset all. I can't boot up to a screen with a refresh arrow and a right arrow that I can click on but nothing happens. All I get a start up is a folder with a blinkin face question mark.

I have a Seagate Freeagent Go 750GB that my Mac won't recognise. I can't afford to lose the contents. The drive was recognised until recently and is still seen by Disk Utility, but won't display a desktop icon to access the contents. I've run Disk Utility many times and it won't fix the problem. I've followed all the steps in the knowledgebase articles. I've tried to use Seagate's diagnostics software, but without success. I've followed all steps in their knowledgebase.Purchased 26 May 2008, S/N 5QD375A2 P/N 9NK2A6-51 (though difficult to read as very small)(OSX 10.5.8, 2.16 Ghz Intel.

I just bought a Seagate FreeAgent XTreme 1TB.
After I went home, I checked online and found all these horrid stories about how this HDD crashed after just a month, or two months, or even 2 weeks (there are like 10+ stories about this problem).
What bugs me more is that on the box it is actually written "Designed for Windows Vista" (which I didn't read before buying, a lesson I learned for future reference) so I'm afraid that it won't work that well on Mac OS X.
I did find out that it works on Mac and I only need to format the drive, but I think, logically, if it works as well for Macs, why did they have to put a label that indicates it was designed for Windows?
I want to know this product IS that bad.
I haven't opened the seal or the plastic at all, just in case everyone says it is that bad and I should to return it to the shop.
I'm using a 15" MBP (not the NEW MBP), Mac OS X v10.5.7

I don't have my mac yet, it's on it's way. I wanted to know if I can just use my current 'for pc' drive in my mac if I connect it up and format it? I can't tell if the difference between the pc and mac versions is just to do with how they are pre formatted and the software that comes with them, or if i can just format the pc version with my mac and use that.
Basically, I just want my music and videos on a portable drive that I can move between my mac and pc. Is there a better way?

I have a 2004 iBook G4. My internal HD broke yesterday, but I have a backup on an external firewire HD enclosure, made using CCC. I've tried to boot from it using the startup disk tool on the install DVD: it comes up as a useable startup disk, but when it restarts I get the blinking folder icon for a few seconds, and then it boots from the internal HD (or tries to.)
Disk utility says it is bootable, I can mount it and edit files using single user mode from the internal HD, etcetc, but it just won't boot from it.
I've even tried to go into Open Firmware and boot yaboot from the external drive, but it doesn't seem to see the drive at all until after OS X is booted.

Seems like pretty good deal, although only 2 reviews it seems to be very good. I heard a lot of good things about Seagate, especially their warranty.
I was leaning towards WD but I've heard a lot of reliabilities issues with their MyBook's actually.
Anyone have this drive? I would go 1.5 TB but I hear current HDD technology isn't up to snuff yet to make another more than 1 TB reliable .. though that could be false.

I feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?

[URL: ...] I'm taking a Digital Media class on my study abroad trip this semester and one of the requirements for the class is that "Students will also need a portable external drive for storing files, a 120 gigabyte drive will be perfect." I'm not computer savvy whatsoever but would this be ideal for my class? We will be working on video projects and such. Also, I have a MacBook would it still work/be ideal with a MacBook?

Quick question. I have an imac running leapord. I also bought an external seagate harddrive to use with time machine. It was working fine for about a month then my mac stopped recognizing the external drive. Any thoughts on what has happened or did I just end up with a faulty external drive?

I have an iBook G4 (1.42 ghz, 1gb - Leopard 10.5.6). I have a usb hub which has a few things plugged in (500 gb HD, mouse, ipod).
I bought a 320 gb portable hard drive. It is not recongized either through the hub or directly into either USB 2.0 ports.
I also have a G4 iMac 700 mhz. running Tiger. It does recognize the hard drive, as does my Intel iMac at work, and my friends Lenovo laptop.

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

Today I was planning to build in a second harddrive into my old G4 tower. So I did this. But after installing the system won't boot anymore from the OS X Tiger partition. I have tried all sorts of jumper settings, from slave to master to cable select. All without success.
When I boot from the Tiger installation CD diskutility does not even recognize my original master drive nor does it recognize the new slave drive. I even tried to boot from an old OS9 disk to initialize the disk. I tried formatting it in another machine to HFS Journaled, no success in booting mounting the disk whatsoever.
I recently added some extra RAM's but i doubt these are the problem since my machine DOES boot without having the new disk installed in the system.
It is a 60GB Maxtor drive, so it is within the maximum amount of GB's possible for these older machines.

I bought a Seagate Expansion Drive (1 TB) a while ago, and have been trying to format it for use with my Mac Mini. I have tried "Disk Utility" several times - once zero'ing out the drive, once DOD'ing it (but that would have taken more than two days, so I cancelled that op.) - and by simply clicking on "Erase" and setting the 'volume format' as the Mac one (journaled) - Each time it has failed and the message I get is "Drive Formatter Failed." Dodgy drive? Dodgy Disk Utility? I'd like to be able to use the drive with some video in Final Cut Pro that I'm going to be working with.
