Jul 22, 2010Well I'm kinda basically overhauling my G5 LCS so I figured, why not lets try and put a heatsink from my 1.8ghz G5 onto the quad G5 CPU since I have it out. I only have one CPU in it right now and it's actually doing pretty damn good. I set the Energy prefs to Reduced as a precaution.
If I ditch the LCS and make this a permanent setup, I will have to machine some custom brackets to hold the heatsinks to the logicboard/case. I have the G5 laid on it's side at the moment since there is no way to fasten the 1.8ghz heatsink down.

This is with a constant 50% load on the CPUs as I just have it folding right now.

Nov 5, 2008I shut it down, popped out the keyboard and sopped up what I could find. When I started it up again, it started fine but in safe boot mode.
Keyboard is fried, obviously (which is how I got the machine in the first place, from someone who did the exact same thing and bought a new one rather than replace the keyboard), and I'm getting no airport detected and no sound output device detected.
My question is, does this mean the airport and soundcard are fried, or is there something else going on? I need help figuring out what parts to replace other than the keyboard.
Mac Pro :: Mineral Oil Bathed/cooled Computer?
Feb 13, 2008Anybody see or try the computers that are fully submerged in mineral oil to keep things cool? The drive and monitor are the only things that aren't submerged. Mineral oil in non-conductive and has a high specific heat capacity so it makes a great cooler. Even the fans are able to continue running while submerged. These are not aftermarket fans either.
Anybody see an Apple computer working with mineral oil? The Mac Pro would run as quiet or quieter than the iMac even if you were playing Crysis or some high end game with your Nvidia 8800 GT card.

Nov 16, 2009My MacBook Pro suffered from a overdose of some delicious red wine. Apple Care said it needed a new logic board and graphics card (i think that's what it called). I want to sell it as is on eBay. is there a way for me to retrieve pictures and videos from the machine?

Mar 22, 2010My problem stems from spilling milk on the keyboard of my mid 2007 white Macbook, and being forced to turn it back on a few hours later because I had to turn assignments in. So, luckily the hard drive and data seem to be fine, but the keyboard has widespread problems of keys not working or phantom sticking. Typing is possible but just too bad for continued use as. What I was wondering is my best option now that I'm here. it seems like my choices are getting my keyboard replaced, using a usb keyboard, or waiting another 24 hours and hoping they dry out, though I'm assuming they're shorted. None of these ideas seem great, and I couldn't find reliable information on how much a Macbook keyboard replacement costs. I'm downright terrible when it comes to disassembling and reassembling computers, but if nothing else is palatable can give it a try. Just looking for the best possible option terms of convenience and cost.

Apr 22, 2010I sent in my MBA for repair last week to a repair depot, and they say that there is corrosion on the motherboard from liquid damage. The problem with me is that the computer has never had any contact with liquids, especially in the area where the motherboard is. Can anyone show me where the corrosion is on this?

Applications :: Safari And ITunes Not Loading After Liquid Spill
Apr 26, 2009So don't ask me how but a beer spilt on my laptop keyboard (ibook g4). Afterwards, I quickly tilted it over and then removed the keyboard and dried it with a blow dryer. I later noticed that the computer shut down by itself bc I don't recall turning it off. Anyway, I got a little impatient/curious after an hour and restarted it. Not the smartest I know. It worked and I ran iTunes and played some music for my guests and then also was surfing the net a little. All was fine. Well we all went outside for a little and when I came back 20 minutes later, the computer had gone into sleep mode but wouldn't respond to keyboard presses so I shut it off for the rest of the night.
Fortunately this morning, the computer turned on fine. However, some of my Mac applications are not working, so far I know that Safari, iTunes and iChat aren't opening but iPhoto and Quicktime are. I think all my other non-Mac apps work fine...So then I tried redownloading iTunes but that didn't work either. I also tried opening a song from my Finder and it wouldnt open in iTunes. Basically the icon loads on the bottom of the screen for a split second and then stops. I have the original software so I guess I could reinstall it but I was wondering if someone knew an easier way? I feel pretty fortunate that my cpu works and at least I can use another browser/music player. Not to mention I can always get a new keyboard.

Jul 1, 2009I work at our university support desk, and the other day we had a girl bring her macbook pro in. The twist is that she did not shut her mbp off and carried it over open in a downpour. Needless to say it was absolutely drenched. Fortunately the computer suffered no side affects. I personally have spilled a drink on mine (I proceeded to turn it off and remove the battery) but I suffered no side affects. So out of curiosity, do MBs/MBPs have sealed keyboards to prevent against liquid damage?

Jan 15, 2010I've notice the bottom arrow on my arrow keys, located on the bottom right corner of the keyboard doesn't have as springy of a bounce as it once did. About 3 days ago I got the impression it kinda felt a bit sticky. Having a baby brother I'm fearing the worst. The performance of my MBP hasn't changed at all, however having only 4 months left allowed to purchase and extend AppleCare I wouldn't want to buy it for no reason. May 5, 2012I spilled about a tablespoon of windex onto the keyboard of my 1.66 i7 MBP. Of course it was on when it happened. I turned it off and flipped it over for a few hours. I was getting ready to go out of town when it happened so I had to close it up and take it on a plain with me. When i got to my destination the next day I tried to start it up and it was dead. I have since read all of the I should have done, but didn't.
I was looking to get an idea of the different cost scenarios to get it fixed. Like if it needs a new logic board, etc... I understand it might be better to get a new computer but I don't have 2800 for another 17'' MBP.

Sep 23, 2010Being the poor college kid that I am, and knowing a bit about hardware repair, I've been buying macbooks on craigslist, etc. and reselling them. I just got a Polycarbonate Macbook that had liquid spilled on (she said it was iced tea). It wouldn't turn on so I checked out the logic board and I cleaned it with alcohol although it seemed clean. I noticed during this that the LED on the power adapter was green, though very dim. When I unhooked the cable connecting the upper case, it turned bright green. Basically what I'm wondering and now that I think about it its probably a stupid question, since I have no way of testing this until I buy a new upper case is do you think it's worth it to try and fix or should I sell it?

Apr 17, 2009Spilled a vanilla latte all over it about 3 weeks ago. Screen immediately screwed up (lighting issues, pixels....the whole works). Apple wanted $800 flat to "begin" to fix it. If the logic board had one drop of liquid on it, it'd jump to $1240. Sent it to MacService.com, and got the screen replaced and the whole computer diagnosed - with shipping included - for $325. Arrived today. Looks PERFECT. Kudos to that company. I'm really impressed.

Apr 28, 2012So I spilled a small amount of tea on the left hand side of my MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. I immediately disconnected the power adaptor, forced shut down and placed the laptop level in a warm, dry area for several days to dry out. On boot up everything performed normally, and has done since, except that when I tried to connect my laptop to my TV last week, nothing happened. I use a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor and normal VGA cable to connect to my tv, and have done this many times before with no issues. The laptop normally automatically recognises that an external display is connected and outputs a video signal - an extended display under OSX Snow Lion, or a mirrored display under Windows 7 Ultimate x64 running in Boot Camp - now literally nothing happens, the laptop does not seem to recognise or react to the fact that the display is connected, and no video signal is output.
My laptop is covered under AppleCare, but I realise that, as this is almost certainly liquid damage, there is probably little that can be done to have this fixed on my AppleCare. What are my options? I don't wish to pay out of pocket for what could potentially be a costly repair, but if there is a possibility to get the Mini DisplayPort working again I would like to explore it.

May 26, 2012It was just an accidental liquid spill, but however my macbook pro has been acting up before all this mishap with the graphics. I thought is was just nothing so I didn't care to bring it to an apple store but when I had to bring it and check it out using the Nvidia video test it presumed a failed video card. The genuius said it will take 2 weeks to be fix until several days later I recieved a call saying it can not be fix due to a foreseen amount of liquid damage. I've spilt other liquid items but wiped it off the keyboard quickly and it still worked. I'm using my MBP right now with an external monitor, it still works fine but with the issue of the screen being pitch black.

Dec 21, 2006I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.
I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.
I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

Microsoft Office (don't know what version but I've had it for years)
I really can't afford to go buy all the software again and I don't want my system to crash. Any suggestions?
This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.

Dec 15, 2006I've heard that G5s (especially dual-core/processor) really fly with 4 Gb RAM. Does anyone have one with this much RAM? If so, is it really worth the upgrade? I have dual-core G5 with 3.5 Gb RAM. It's great, but I do think it feels a bit choked at times. I would like to give it another Gig.

Does it also support PowerPC or not? . What version of Vuse should I use, with satisfaction, if any? My computer has been acting up and I am trying to figure out why. That might be a cause. Dec 15, 2010I have a few questions about upgrading my mac in order to use the new iPod touch 4th gen (requires 10.5 or later).
First, here's what I'm working with:
I have a PPC G4, dual processor 1.25 GHZ, 80GB HD, 768mb RAM, running Tiger 10.4.11. I use CS2 for freelance graphic design (and very occasionally Quark 4 on OS 9). I have 2 external hard drives backing up my system, storing personal files, photos, music, etc. Yes, I've got an oldie, but it's been cranking out loyally over the years with tune ups and TLC, and I need it to live on a while longer.
1. Can I upgrade to Leopard 10.5 (not snow leopard) and still use my CS2 programs? From what little information I've been able to find, the answer is most likely yes, but with quirks and decreased speed... which I can deal with. I simply cannot afford a new mac (nor the software upgrades required once that happens), so I need to work with what I've got.
If the answer is yes, then...
2) are there any other updates in between 10.4.11 and 10.5 that I will have to purchase before upgrading to 10.5?
3) Also, since I will have to upgrade to a minimum 1GB RAM, can anyone please suggest a good site to buy it from? There seems to be a million options out there. I know that I should really have more RAM anyhow with what software I am using.
PowerPC :: Cannot Install OS 10.5 On Mac G5
Jan 6, 2011I have a power mac g5 its a few years old and I'm having trouble installing OS 10.5 leopard. When I turn on the computer i get a blinking ? folder that alternates showing a ? and a mac face, with a gray background. I tried putting in the start up disk (? folder doesn't appear with the start up disk) and it guides me through the installation steps, but it doesn't display a location to install the OS on. I also tried putting an external HD in and this does not appear as well. So, I went to disk utility and tried the figure out the problem. In disk utility, the internal hard drive is there, but not the external HD. I also tried switching Hard drive ports from a to b and this made no difference.
