View 1 Replies View RelatedWell I'm kinda basically overhauling my G5 LCS so I figured, why not lets try and put a heatsink from my 1.8ghz G5 onto the quad G5 CPU since I have it out. I only have one CPU in it right now and it's actually doing pretty damn good. I set the Energy prefs to Reduced as a precaution.
If I ditch the LCS and make this a permanent setup, I will have to machine some custom brackets to hold the heatsinks to the logicboard/case. I have the G5 laid on it's side at the moment since there is no way to fasten the 1.8ghz heatsink down.
Below is a screenshot of the temps
This is with a constant 50% load on the CPUs as I just have it folding right now.
i want to take a motherbord from a quad core 2.5ghz powermac g5 and swich the procesers with 2 2.3ghz g5's add water cooling (trough the heat sinks or somthing) and have (in essance) a water cool quad core 2.3 ghz powermac g5

One is a 1GHz 17" and the other is a 1.67GHz 17". now on the 1 Ghz i have a row of keys that randomly does not work. on the other the screen is shot. my question is, will the screen on the 1GHz fit on the 1.67 without any problems?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAnybody see or try the computers that are fully submerged in mineral oil to keep things cool? The drive and monitor are the only things that aren't submerged. Mineral oil in non-conductive and has a high specific heat capacity so it makes a great cooler. Even the fans are able to continue running while submerged. These are not aftermarket fans either.
Anybody see an Apple computer working with mineral oil? The Mac Pro would run as quiet or quieter than the iMac even if you were playing Crysis or some high end game with your Nvidia 8800 GT card.
Does anyone know if these parts can be switched out? I know the battery and dc in board cannot be (I don't think) but can the logic board, memory, hard drive, etc be switched? I can't get power in my powerbook and would like to test it with the logic board from my macbook pro.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I have an old iBook (12" G3) that I painted black. I want to replace the keys on it with dark keys. I heard that the Titanium Powerbook (400-500Mhz-ish) had keys that would work interchangeably with this iBook. Is this true?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI shut it down, popped out the keyboard and sopped up what I could find. When I started it up again, it started fine but in safe boot mode.
Keyboard is fried, obviously (which is how I got the machine in the first place, from someone who did the exact same thing and bought a new one rather than replace the keyboard), and I'm getting no airport detected and no sound output device detected.
My question is, does this mean the airport and soundcard are fried, or is there something else going on? I need help figuring out what parts to replace other than the keyboard.
I have a dual 2.5ghz PM G5 that works fine except that the heat exchanger leaked. Everything else is fine. My question is, I found someone on CL who was selling a quad G5 system for $375 because of a damaged mainboard. Could I take the Mobo from the dual G5 and put it in the case for the quad? The processor sockets are same but I'm unsure as to mounting issues.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PM G5 Quad is in need of a new logic board and processor. I am waiting until after WWDC to see if there will be an update to the Mac Pro line - as I will be buying a new one to replace my old one. What's useful to keep from my old G5? I feel like I'm parting out an old Camaro or something. I'm planning to at minimum keep the HD and just pop it into the new machine (hope I can do that). I'm fairly certain the RAM is not going to be compatible, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can scavenge off the old machine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an old, old 10Gig iBook - the very first one that came out in white, I think I bought it 2001 - that has been working great until the power cord broke a few months ago. I just bought a new Macbook to replace it, and I'm wondering what I should do with the old one? The only problem is that I have no power cord so I can't go in and wipe the harddrive, and I would really like all my stuff erased before I give it away. Is there any thing worth any money on that old machine?

View 6 Replies View Relateda magnetic exchangeable head screw driver long enough to reach the torx screws that hold the CPU heatsink onto the logicboard? According to this guy, the shaft needs to be at least 20 centimeters, or about 8 inches. I'm not having much luck. Help me out?edit: THIS interchangeable head screwdriver looks like it will work, and it has a magnet in it, so that is a good thing. I'm just not thrilled with the $17 shipping.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI realize this probably wouldn't work due to the different smc controllers, but I'm wondering if the nice quieter 17'' mbp cooling fans would fit in the 15'' mbp's. Does anyone know if the fan sizes are the same? I know that the model #'s are only one letter off. The 17' mbp fans are quieter than the 15 due to having fewer blades(?) or a different design, and I think they actually spin at a lower speed. This would probably be super dangerous as the 17'' fans might not be compatible with or do a good enough job of cooling the 15'' mbp effectively, but it would be a cool mod. Anyone have info on the feasibility?

Can I use the magsafe connector from my 2007 MacBook Pro 15" with my 2010 (i7) MacBook Pro 17"? They are both 85W, but I purchased my 2010 MBP in Europe and thought it would be easier to use the connector from my US purchased 2007 MBP while in US so I don't have to use and adapter.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the Black Macbook 13" (from mid 2007). Model A1181. I think it was the 2.16Ghz, 160GB. OSX 10.4. I need help finding what Logic boards work with my Mac. Mine is broken and I need to replace. I will be looking at used or at least ones on ebay to minimize the cost. From the research that I have done. It looks like I can used any of the following:
661-5033 2.4GHz
661-4397 2.16GHz Black
661-4220 2.0 GHz black
*update* Upon further review I believe that I have found the Logic Board number. On the board itself it lists 820-1889-A? Sound correct. I do get hits when I google it. I guess my question is what is interchangeable with this?
My MacBook Pro suffered from a overdose of some delicious red wine. Apple Care said it needed a new logic board and graphics card (i think that's what it called). I want to sell it as is on eBay. is there a way for me to retrieve pictures and videos from the machine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem stems from spilling milk on the keyboard of my mid 2007 white Macbook, and being forced to turn it back on a few hours later because I had to turn assignments in. So, luckily the hard drive and data seem to be fine, but the keyboard has widespread problems of keys not working or phantom sticking. Typing is possible but just too bad for continued use as. What I was wondering is my best option now that I'm here. it seems like my choices are getting my keyboard replaced, using a usb keyboard, or waiting another 24 hours and hoping they dry out, though I'm assuming they're shorted. None of these ideas seem great, and I couldn't find reliable information on how much a Macbook keyboard replacement costs. I'm downright terrible when it comes to disassembling and reassembling computers, but if nothing else is palatable can give it a try. Just looking for the best possible option terms of convenience and cost.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI sent in my MBA for repair last week to a repair depot, and they say that there is corrosion on the motherboard from liquid damage. The problem with me is that the computer has never had any contact with liquids, especially in the area where the motherboard is. Can anyone show me where the corrosion is on this?

So don't ask me how but a beer spilt on my laptop keyboard (ibook g4). Afterwards, I quickly tilted it over and then removed the keyboard and dried it with a blow dryer. I later noticed that the computer shut down by itself bc I don't recall turning it off. Anyway, I got a little impatient/curious after an hour and restarted it. Not the smartest I know. It worked and I ran iTunes and played some music for my guests and then also was surfing the net a little. All was fine. Well we all went outside for a little and when I came back 20 minutes later, the computer had gone into sleep mode but wouldn't respond to keyboard presses so I shut it off for the rest of the night.
Fortunately this morning, the computer turned on fine. However, some of my Mac applications are not working, so far I know that Safari, iTunes and iChat aren't opening but iPhoto and Quicktime are. I think all my other non-Mac apps work fine...So then I tried redownloading iTunes but that didn't work either. I also tried opening a song from my Finder and it wouldnt open in iTunes. Basically the icon loads on the bottom of the screen for a split second and then stops. I have the original software so I guess I could reinstall it but I was wondering if someone knew an easier way? I feel pretty fortunate that my cpu works and at least I can use another browser/music player. Not to mention I can always get a new keyboard.
I work at our university support desk, and the other day we had a girl bring her macbook pro in. The twist is that she did not shut her mbp off and carried it over open in a downpour. Needless to say it was absolutely drenched. Fortunately the computer suffered no side affects. I personally have spilled a drink on mine (I proceeded to turn it off and remove the battery) but I suffered no side affects. So out of curiosity, do MBs/MBPs have sealed keyboards to prevent against liquid damage?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've notice the bottom arrow on my arrow keys, located on the bottom right corner of the keyboard doesn't have as springy of a bounce as it once did. About 3 days ago I got the impression it kinda felt a bit sticky. Having a baby brother I'm fearing the worst. The performance of my MBP hasn't changed at all, however having only 4 months left allowed to purchase and extend AppleCare I wouldn't want to buy it for no reason. That and I always like to rest assured my Mac is in pristine condition.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI installed an invisible shield on my macbook pro, and was concerned about how suceptible it may be to get water, or another liquid in the top of the lid via the apple logo? You spray the solution on the shield and then squeegee it around with some force, is it possible to get liquid inside the case via this boundary? Even something like a spray lcd cleaner or a damp cloth? How well sealed is the transition between the aluminum and the plastic of the logo?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI spilled about a tablespoon of windex onto the keyboard of my 1.66 i7 MBP. Of course it was on when it happened. I turned it off and flipped it over for a few hours. I was getting ready to go out of town when it happened so I had to close it up and take it on a plain with me. When i got to my destination the next day I tried to start it up and it was dead. I have since read all of the I should have done, but didn't.
I was looking to get an idea of the different cost scenarios to get it fixed. Like if it needs a new logic board, etc... I understand it might be better to get a new computer but I don't have 2800 for another 17'' MBP.

I read that this liquid metal is very light weight and still strong at the same time.
But wondered how it looks.. Is it glossy like stainless steel or brushed as the aluminium used on iPad and MacBook Pros? How dark is it?
There has been alot talking about a Carbon Fibre MBA, as it would take some of the weight - could this be it in stead?
