I have a PowerBook G4 which failed me a couple of months ago. The screen would just freeze. Recently, I've managed to wipe the hard disk and wanted to do a clean install using the restore disk provided but it keeps hanging mid way (installation wouldn't complete).

i recently got a used tray loading iMac G3 with a wiped hard drive. When I boot from the OS 9 CD and try to install OS 9, I get errors telling me to update the firmware, but when I try to update the firmware, I get errors saying that it can't install anything because the CD is a locked volume and I can't boot from the hard drive. Is there a way to install OS 9 on this machine?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.33gh 14" ibook that Im selling so Im trying to reinstall leopard. so I put in the disk load it up everything is fine until it actually starts installing.. it gets about 10-20% and the says Install failed could not validate "Essentials" package. then I tried again and let it check the disc prior to installing and it tells me to clean disk from scatches and dust. i noticed there were a couple small scratches on the disk so i got another install disk but when i try to put it in, the ibook just spits it back out after a few seconds and i cannot load the installer with the new disk
View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to see what all the fuss was about with Macs, so I recently purchased a real cheap ibook G3 (the clamshell one), which came with no software on it but still has sound(?) Anyway, when I turn the laptop on, there is a startup sound, and then a little picture of a folder with a question mark on it. I leapt into action and bought a copy of OS X 10.0.3, which I assume is old enough to work (this machine is an ibook M2453 366mhz 320mb ram 9gb notebook), and I am not sure if that will even run anything like osx but I wanted to try. So I boot the laptop up, I get a little icon of an old mac and a little cd spinning in the upper left hand corner, it sounds like it is loading things from the cd, and nothing. I let it do that for almost an hour and nothing happened.

I forgot my password years ago and I am not sure what has to be done first. I'm purchasing OSX panther complete installion discs because I want to update it and add more memory. View 2 Replies View RelatedIm having trouble with an old powerbook g3 lombard (bronze keyboard) (400MHz/1MB Cache/64MB/6GB HD/8MB Video/DVD) i can turn it on and off no problem, but most of the software cannot be opened and i cant seem to get it on the internet at all. it did not come with an installation cd, so all i have is the laptop and charger. i do have the installation cd for Mac OSX 10.5.8 from my mac mini but i doubt the powerbook can handle it and i'm having trouble working out how to install it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two macs(one is macbook, another one is G4 cube). On my G4 Cube OS 9.2 is running and it is up to date. (last firmware update installed) I want to install mac os x tiger on it but i can not. I tried almost everything but i couldn't install yet.
Firstly I downloaded tiger.dmg and burned into a dvd, then inserted to the Cube. It can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file. so i could not install in this way.
Then i connect the macbook to my Cube via firewire and I inserted the installation dvd to the macbook but the result was same. cube can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file.
Then I changed the host and target. I saw G4's harddisk as an external harddisk on my macbook's screen and i found the OSInstall.mpkg after I mounted Tiger dmg file on desktop. I choosed as installation destination G4's harddisk and installed the tiger on it. Then i open the Cube and I opened startup disc on os9 to choose os x as startup system. Though Tiger's system files are on the G4's harddisk there is no choise as os x in the startup disc menu so i couldn't start tiger.
What can i do for install the tiger on my Cube?
I found a great deal on an eMac for the rest of my family to use. Before getting started, I wanted to reinstall Leopard using a disk image. Obviously with an eMac, I am not able to boot and install using a USB flash drive so I used an old iPod with a firewire connection and put the disk image on the iPod. The problem I am having is when I hold down the "option" key on startup, the iPod drive does not show up. Am I doing something wrong? To my understanding, I thought I could use an old iPod to install OSX

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a G3 iBook, 600MHz, 2 USB slots, 1 firewire slot, DVD ROM/CDRW with 640Mb. I bought a Tiger DVD which on the front says: "Mac OS X Tiger. Includes Xcode 2. Install DVD. Version 10.4.6." It came as new, inside a Mac OS X box (no grey installation discs - just 1 black DVD). But...it won't install on my iBook. In fact, it won't even mount on my desktop! I've tried holding "C" on startup but that won't help. Incidentally, I can't repair permissions (I just get "No valid packages (-9997)") but that seems to be the only thing going on with my Mac! Any ideas to get this show on the road?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi attempted to install leopard with firewire through my mac mini, yet it get to the install menu and says: leopard cannot be installed on this machine. it is the two leopard discs that came with my mac mini intel c2d. I also have a powermac g3 i could run firewire out of if necessary. I dont know if it is the discs because i used the restore disc from a powermac g4 to upgrade this ibook to tiger.

I am trying to install Leopard on a 17" G5 imac but I can't get it to boot off my Leopard install CD (a dual-layer backup copy as the original cannot be located at the moment). The disk will mount under tiger, but will not boot, either from the internal DVD or an external drive.
Is there any good trick to do the install? I did an install onto an external USB drive that booted an intel iMac but that drive wouldn't boot the G5. Anyone have any tricks? I've never done target disk mode and don't think I have a firewire cable, but could get one if needed.

View 7 Replies View Relatedso my boss' ibook g3 just broke, he brought it to apple and they said it needs a new hard drive and were going to charge him something like 400 dollars to replace it. He decided not to do it because it's so old. (not sure how old, but it's a white g3 with a cd tray). Anyway, i told him i should be able to do it. I've found directions online on ifixit and stuff but need a few more questions answered.
1. Will any 2.5 inch hard drive fit? I think i'm going for 5400 rpms because i don't want it to get too hot and he wants 80 gb. how is this one? [URL]
2. How will i run the os once it is installed? Do i need to installl 10.0 first and then move up? Can i install from the cd or do i need to do it from another computer via target disk mode?
3. ifixit suggests i get a "spudger" which i guess it a plastic anti static toothpic type thing to remove hard to get parts. Definitely needed or no? I have a set of small screw drivers that i've used for my powerbook that i thik should be fine.
4. Any tips at all you wanna throw at me.

The only problem is I need to be running 10.4 or later. My only problem is, I can't install 10.4 because I dont know the administrator password, and I have no means of contact with the original owner. I also dont have the original install disks. I found one for a good price on eBay and when it arrived everything seemed ok. I wanted to re-install the OS and set everything to my specifications because I was having a little trouble with some of the apps. Anyway, I went through the lengthy re-install and just as it finished counting down the seconds to completion, it shut down. I thought it might be in sleep mode because the little white light was on, so I hit a key and the light went off but nothing happened. Nothing on the screen, no HD noise, nothing. I'm at a loss because I really don't know much at all about hardware or software, which is why I liked the user-friendly Mac so much. The only thing that tells me it's getting power is the little green light at the power connector. I tried a PMU reset (there's no reset button on my model so it was a button combo of shift-ctrl-option-power I think) but that didn't do anything.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy newly acquired "ibook G4 1.33ghz 12 inch" is having problems booting just after recently insatlling a brand new WD Scorpio Blue 160GB hard-drive. I installed myself with the very useful [URL] tutorial which ran through the process quite simply. Basically the background story here is, I was given the ibook by a friend of mine who didn't want it as she didn't have the patience, money and time to invest into having it fixed. Some three years ago she dropped it from her coffee table and since then the hard-drive started failing, getting louder and slower to eventually one day not switching on at all. She took the ibook to an Apple Genius bar in LA where they ran diagnostics and resulted it with having a failed hard-drive.
She never had it repaired and has since been keeping it stored away as a spare. She was kind enough to gift it to me, I was well up for the challenge to repair it so here I am!! So, I bought a new hard-drive, successfully installed it and then the moment of truth, the ibook DID switch on, this itself was good news. But ever since I haven't been able to progress any further, as when I switch the ibook on it makes the apple start-up sound then goes to a white screen and says this:

Then says:

So if I type "mac-boot" it goes to a grey screen with a folder icon in the middle containing a little 'finder' face and a flashing question mark, and then if left for about 5 minutes or so it just switches itself off. Of course it occurred to me that there is nothing on the new hard-drive so it can't boot from anything, I tried using my intel mac's start up disk which has OSX tiger on it, but this doesn't give any better results, I start-up holding C and I here the disk being read but it can't boot from it, it still goes back to the OpenFirmware screen as above.
I am pretty new to mac so a little unsure about the issue at hand. I bought an ibook without an OS installed. So I put in a setup CD but cant get it to load by holding C. This initially made me question the CD. But I then realised I wasn't able to eject it by holding fn and f12. Also the caps light wouldn't toggle on and off when I hit it, though I am unsure if this light works when there is no OS installed. My question is: is the keyboard not working?
