I just picked up an imac G3 system, its kind of a bluish green. has os8.6 and i would like to install Linux on it, can anyone help me with this? im certain if i can get the system to boot from the disc i can handle the rest myself, i have tried holding down C when starting and had no luck.
View 10 Repliesi would really like to try linux on my mac mini. i love the idea of open-source. anyways, i feel i am a bit lost on what to do. with boot camp, there is a process that guides you along for installing windows on your mac. is there something similar for a version of linux or better yet, can it be installed via boot camp? i would like for me to be able to select my operating system at boot-up, similar as you can with boot camp.

Under windows machine...it boot normally,but if i put it on G3 and hold 'C',it doesn't boot (but i think it try to read the cd becouse i see a small icon with "face"/"?" on the screen).
View 15 Replies View RelatedMy office is getting rid of a bunch of old computer parts and one of them happens to be a B&W G3. As far as I know it works, the hard drive may be failing since it books up with the folder with a question mark on it. I don't know the full specs other than at least 128MB of RAM (there's two sticks and I can only tell what one of them says), not sure of anything else since it won't boot up.
It comes with an OS 8 disc but I'm sure something newer can run on it. What versions of Linux would be good to try out? I'm tempted to put it in the kitchen and make it a household computer but I'm not sure yet. Gotta see if its working all the way first...
FYI I have a powermac G4 dual proccessor with mirror drive doors. im running mac os x 10.4. I am wondering if anyone has installed linux on a similar machine, I would like to know more before I try it. what version is best (ubuntu I heard is good?)? Must you reformat a drive or can you install in on a new internal drive? any information really.
View 24 Replies View Related I'm looking for a very easy to install Linux on my old iBook G4 and I would like it to support my Airport card without having to do much configuring. Is there any Linux out there that would be suitable for me? I'd like for it to run fairly fast as my G4 is only 256mb RAM.
I do remember looking into this before but, at that time, the only useable Linuxs didn't have immediate support for the Airport card and you needed to download these drivers and install them from the command line interface and it was very confusing.
got an IBook with its original install disks. OS 9.2. It has Linux on it now and works ok with that. I want Mac OS back on it but when I try to install it tells me that it can't find the hard drive. So thinking that I might have the wrong disks, ( i got it used so not positive 9.2 is correct) I got OS 10 and it does the same thing. When I get to the part that it asks 'where' do you want to install it show no disks at all except the CD drive.
Any Ideas what I need to do? As I said the disks are there and functioning because Linux is installed and works. Is there some type of Utility that I need to run to put a Mac partition back on it? That's my only idea that I can think of. If so what and where can I get it?
#I recently acquired a 1.6 GHz G5 PPC, and I'd like to install Linux on it. I had to put in a new hard drive, so I put in a Seagate, 7200 RPM, 3.0 gb/s, 250 GB (just came yesterday). I'm not having any luck getting it to boot from a Linux disc though; my friend gave me a version of Feisty Fawn, no luck. I tried burning a copy of ubuntu, version 7.10 for PPC, from Apple's native utility but that didn't work either. I know that the super drive is reading, though, because if I put in my Macbook Pro copy of OS X it gives me angry messages. When I press the option button on restart, I get a blue screen with two buttons; a return button and a forward arrow button. Also, what's the right way to burn Ubuntu to a disc; I tried using FireStarter FX but it kept on telling me that burning could not be completed.

I've tried making multiple partitions, but they aren't counting as free space. Is it advised to just shrink the current partition a little?

OS 9.1 (or 9.2... don't really know, except for the fact that it's still classic) Will it run linux? I'm currently downloading Ubuntu Netbook... will it work for my iMac? If I end up hating it will I be able to go back (with proper install CDs) and install Mac OS again?
My iBook has had a broken hard drive for a while now. I have tried loading a Linux live cd on it, but it's mostly useless because of having no storage. I want to be able to use it on the go. Is it possible that i could use a linux live usb, such as damn small linux, and use the memory on said flash drive instead of a hard drive? How would I go about doing this if I could. Keep in mind that it wont bother me that I won't have much storage space. I really only want to use it for web browsing on the go.

When I boot from the OS 9 CD and try to install OS 9, I get errors telling me to update the firmware, but when I try to update the firmware, I get errors saying that it can't install anything because the CD is a locked volume and I can't boot from the hard drive. Is there a way to install OS 9 on this machine?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.33gh 14" ibook that Im selling so Im trying to reinstall leopard. so I put in the disk load it up everything is fine until it actually starts installing.. it gets about 10-20% and the says Install failed could not validate "Essentials" package. then I tried again and let it check the disc prior to installing and it tells me to clean disk from scatches and dust. i noticed there were a couple small scratches on the disk so i got another install disk but when i try to put it in, the ibook just spits it back out after a few seconds and i cannot load the installer with the new disk
View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to see what all the fuss was about with Macs, so I recently purchased a real cheap ibook G3 (the clamshell one), which came with no software on it but still has sound(?) Anyway, when I turn the laptop on, there is a startup sound, and then a little picture of a folder with a question mark on it. I leapt into action and bought a copy of OS X 10.0.3, which I assume is old enough to work (this machine is an ibook M2453 366mhz 320mb ram 9gb notebook), and I am not sure if that will even run anything like osx but I wanted to try. So I boot the laptop up, I get a little icon of an old mac and a little cd spinning in the upper left hand corner, it sounds like it is loading things from the cd, and nothing. I let it do that for almost an hour and nothing happened.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm having trouble with an old powerbook g3 lombard (bronze keyboard) (400MHz/1MB Cache/64MB/6GB HD/8MB Video/DVD) i can turn it on and off no problem, but most of the software cannot be opened and i cant seem to get it on the internet at all. it did not come with an installation cd, so all i have is the laptop and charger. i do have the installation cd for Mac OSX 10.5.8 from my mac mini but i doubt the powerbook can handle it and i'm having trouble working out how to install it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two macs(one is macbook, another one is G4 cube). On my G4 Cube OS 9.2 is running and it is up to date. (last firmware update installed) I want to install mac os x tiger on it but i can not. I tried almost everything but i couldn't install yet.
Firstly I downloaded tiger.dmg and burned into a dvd, then inserted to the Cube. It can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file. so i could not install in this way.
Then i connect the macbook to my Cube via firewire and I inserted the installation dvd to the macbook but the result was same. cube can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file.
Then I changed the host and target. I saw G4's harddisk as an external harddisk on my macbook's screen and i found the OSInstall.mpkg after I mounted Tiger dmg file on desktop. I choosed as installation destination G4's harddisk and installed the tiger on it. Then i open the Cube and I opened startup disc on os9 to choose os x as startup system. Though Tiger's system files are on the G4's harddisk there is no choise as os x in the startup disc menu so i couldn't start tiger.
What can i do for install the tiger on my Cube?
I found a great deal on an eMac for the rest of my family to use. Before getting started, I wanted to reinstall Leopard using a disk image. Obviously with an eMac, I am not able to boot and install using a USB flash drive so I used an old iPod with a firewire connection and put the disk image on the iPod. The problem I am having is when I hold down the "option" key on startup, the iPod drive does not show up. Am I doing something wrong? View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a G3 iBook, 600MHz, 2 USB slots, 1 firewire slot, DVD ROM/CDRW with 640Mb. I bought a Tiger DVD which on the front says: "Mac OS X Tiger. Includes Xcode 2. Install DVD. Version 10.4.6." It came as new, inside a Mac OS X box (no grey installation discs - just 1 black DVD). But...it won't install on my iBook. In fact, it won't even mount on my desktop! I've tried holding "C" on startup but that won't help. Incidentally, I can't repair permissions (I just get "No valid packages (-9997)") but that seems to be the only thing going on with my Mac! Any ideas to get this show on the road?

I also have a powermac g3 i could run firewire out of if necessary. I dont know if it is the discs because i used the restore disc from a powermac g4 to upgrade this ibook to tiger.

I am trying to install Leopard on a 17" G5 imac but I can't get it to boot off my Leopard install CD (a dual-layer backup copy as the original cannot be located at the moment). The disk will mount under tiger, but will not boot, either from the internal DVD or an external drive.
Is there any good trick to do the install? I did an install onto an external USB drive that booted an intel iMac but that drive wouldn't boot the G5. Anyone have any tricks? I've never done target disk mode and don't think I have a firewire cable, but could get one if needed.
