I'm trying to get an accurate identification of the iBook white G/3 700 MHz with 12in display we just acquired. There seems to be a couple of very similar models. The Apple Support article is unclear [URL]as to which one we have. One model is an early 2002 release (M8602LL/A), the other a late 2002 release (M8860LL/A).

Is it possible to replace the logic board in a 12in 700mhz g3 ibook with a g4 12in logic board? I was just wondering because I came across a g4 logic board.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThree days ago, I stored my ibook in my bag, but I forget to take it out. (normally it is sitting on desk recharging)
The ibook itself was in sleep mode (by simply closing the lid). The battery indicator was 1/2 full.
Today I tried to continue working with it. Opened the lid, but the ibook didn't turned itself on. The sleep led wasn't pulsating either. I just thought that it might run out of juice. First I pressed the Power button. Nothing happened.
I plugged it in the power adaptor and then pressed the power button. Nothing happened. I tried holding the Powerbutton in order to force a reset. Nothing happens.
I unplugged the ibook from the power adaptor, and tried to reseat the battery. Opened the lock, pulled it out, pushed it back in, closed the lock)Pushing and/or holding the power button did nothing.
I tried starting the ibook without the battery (does this even work?), while only the power adaptor is plugged in. Pushing and holding the power button did nothing.
To sum it up: It doesn't start with and without the battery nor with the power adaptor.
The strange thing is that the battery is charging. (the light on the power adaptor plug is oragne) Three of the four battery leds on the underside are "on" while I am writing this post. Resetting the power manager (ctrl + option + shift + power) didn't do anything.
I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
I recently managed to pick up a Imac G3 Graphite, 700mhz, 1GB ram, 60GB HD, OSX 10.4.11 for free (Well kinda free, im repairing 2 emacs and a powermac g4) it runs pretty well for me (starts lagging with firefox/itunes/msn/transmission| running at the same time ) im one of these people who HAVE to multitask computers :L i know its old and i probebly shouldn't push it this hard but.
well anyway iv been reading up and seen posts that you can over-clock other g3's (re-soldering the jumpers for the CPU clock controllers) and i was wondering if i could do the same for this one. I've had a little look around the internet and haven't found anything.
I'm internal-HD-shopping for a friend, and want to make sure I know: What terminology will identify drives I can put in this iBook? I know it's 2.5"--what else should I make sure of? Also--any kinds that would be better than others? It's a 14" G3 with Firewire and DVD-ROM. "New" as G3s go.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just moved back up to Jacksonville with my friend and now his iBook G4 is not booting. It goes to the white Apple screen and spins for about twice as long as normal, and then goes to a black screen with just a type-cursor in the top left hand corner which erases any text submitted. Now, from there I went ahead and booted from the Tiger Install disk and ran permission repair and also disk repair, without any glitches. Also, we then booted again and ran a hardware diagnostic and it turned up absolutely no problems with the computer. Any ideas? Luckily, he's still under his first year of AppleCare (and he's about to purchase an extension since you can now get it in Florida legally) and he should be covered.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got an 1.33 Ghz G4 iBook logic board, given to me as a working part. However, nothing else that goes along. I do have all the basic cabling such as speaker and power button, flex cables and such. Also got myself a new external AC power adapter. Now, I do not intend to use this as a laptop, thus, I will not be looking for a battery, just AC use. However, there's a big problem, I've no screen. I know there's this software hack that allows to connect an external display, in order to have a "mirroring" desktop.
I suppose that'd be achievable if I had the original screen to actually do the hack, but I don't have it. So, is there a way that I can just directly connect an external display and completely forget about the internal one? One more thing, suppose I can't do what I have in mind, if I actually found and borrowed an internal display, would I be alright if after the hack I give the internal display back to it's owner and continue with the external?
My homeroom teacher's 14 inch G3 iBook's display has started displaying everything grainy. There are little dots everywhere on the display, and it is annoying. The head IT person at school is stumped. I am not sure of the exact version of OS X, if it might be a software issue. Could it be a sign of logic board failure?

To run a specific program I need to have OS 9.2 installed because it won't work any other way(even through the simulator). I have OS 10.2 installed on the master image iBook computer and have installed OS 9.2 through the restore disks. I can load up to both OS X and OS 9.2 but OS 9.2 does not take up the entire screen. It's contained within a small box in the middle of the screen.

This is my second ibook and I really need this one to work! Its only 4 years old 800mhz,256,30GB. View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend gave me one of these, said he didn't test it. i tested it but have observed the following: ring on PSU plug illuminates fine, was orange but now greed thus battery charges ok. battery button works too, pressing that initially showed 1 dot, now shows 4. charge ok and accepted. pressing the power button though, i hear the fan spin for 1 sec, the disk and the cd drive click in, but no chime and nothing on the display. no response nothing, a hard reset (hold power) turns it off. I did the PMU reset, and the pmu did do a reset, but nothing. I also did the PRAM, and again nothing. I am suspecting a faulty logic board, I hope i can get this going as aesthetically it's in good condition. For the info it appears to be an iBook G3 model A1007, If you need any more info then give me a shout.

I am testing a Dell 17'' on it right now before I open the LG one, but my problem is that the same screen shows on my ibook and the external. This isn't what I want. I have read you are supposed to be able to close the laptop and then it shifts to the external display but this is not working for me.
This is my goal:
Use my bluetooth keyboard full time
Have my ibook closed at all times
Have my external as my main display
How do I make this work?

I have an old Dell CRT I'm using currently with my iBook and I want to know how I can just use the display and close the iBook when at my desk without the computer sleeping. Currently if I try waking the computer with the keyboard or mouse, it wakes up for about five seconds before going back to sleep. Is there any way around this or do i just have to keep the iBook Open?

1) the display will completely dim to the lowest setting or cycle between bright and dim, as if pressing f1 and/or f2 repeatedly
2) some of whatever she was typing or working on at the time will be deleted
3) a string of repeated characters (usually q1aq1aq1a) will appear in her typing
4) often the desktop is brought to the front as if pressing f11 in expose
5) other than the problems described, the computer continues to work normally
6) problems are almost always related to moving the hinge position, but sometimes happen randomly, with no movement at all
7) it will sometimes occur many times a day, then not at all for several days
8) it seems to happen more often when the computer is not on a hard surface, but this may just be my imagination or some random bad luck
I am at a loss as to what the problem may be. I was thinking it might be the display cable because of the link to hinge position, but that wouldn't account for the random typing. Then I thought it was the motherboard, but the computer seems to work ok other than this. I did realize the other day that most of the problems are things on the left hand edge of the keyboard (display brightness, the q1a pattern), but this doesn't account for the deleted typing and the mysterious f11 thing. Does anybody have any thoughts? Am I looking at a display cable (hopefully this is it - I have no problems with disassembling/reassembling things)? Or is it the motherboard (probably means it would be more economical to get a new machine)? Or is it something else?
My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
My iBook G4 power supply failed and I'm awaiting a replacement. In the mean time, can I use the power supply from my iBook G3 with the iBook G4?

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?
I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

I've searched this problem on google for the past hour or so and have had no luck whatsoever. I have an Ibook G4 14" and I think it's like 1.2 CPU. A while back the Ibook stopped working and left me with a grey screen and finder icon with flash quiestion mark. I searched the net for a solution for that and what came back was that I had a dead harddrive. Okay fair enough, I've just replaced the drive with the working one from my Mac Mini, i repeat the WORKING drive, I know it works. So I start up the Ibook and hear the chimes, the screen flashes black white black and then stays on white. I have reset the PRAM and eject disk works but no other key commands, I cannot boot from installer 10.4 cd (a new one I bought, not the bundled one), I can't go into target mode as I have no firewire and leaving it alone for a while doesn't help.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to back up data from my ibook. I have tried to burn backup data on a CD-R, but have not had much success. I have tried to follow the instructions of creating a blank image, put information into it, then burn the disk. But I keep getting the message that " this image is in use" When I put a disk in, It is ejected because "image is in use" What am I doing wrong. Also what type of external flash drive or etc, could I use to back up the information of I can't burn a disk successfully?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know this concerns an older machine, but I was hoping to get some solid advice on this subject. I have retail copies of both Tiger and Leopard for my G4, and my OWC order just came in the mail, and after tearing it down, cleaning it up, and throwing a new 160Gb drive and 1Gb of memory into it, the machine is feeling extremely responsive under Tiger. My question is thus: everyone seems to think Tiger's days are numbered, which I can understand when you consider it's age. But how numbered are numbered? Safari and iTunes are still supported up to the current versions, Camino is still supported on 10.4 so when Firefox drops Tiger support I'm not without a Gecko based browser, and the other software I plan to use on this machine (iLife 06, OpenOffice, JDarkRoom and some old games, primarily) are all still good for Tiger.
My primary concern stems from the web browser issue, but more importantly, internet security on this machine. It's on a wired connection behind an AirPort Extreme so I don't know how worried I need to be, but last I checked security updates are not coming down for Tiger anymore from Apple, thus would the iMac become a potential target running Tiger? I don't want to be running bare arsed to the wind, if you'll pardon the expression. So I was hoping someone with a better understanding of software security could explain differences between Tiger and Leopard and wether or not that's a huge deal. I'm tempted to stick with Tiger, because now that the upgrades are in, it's lightning fast. Almost as fast as the MacBook fast, which is impressive from an eight year old machine.
