basically I am looking to use an original eMac 700mhz with 768MB RAM in my living room to stream itunes from our other computers. Only reason i am even considering it is because eMacs are way cheap on eBay, less than an airport express for use with airtunes, plus i could check email etc on it.
View 11 RepliesI recently managed to pick up a Imac G3 Graphite, 700mhz, 1GB ram, 60GB HD, OSX 10.4.11 for free (Well kinda free, im repairing 2 emacs and a powermac g4) it runs pretty well for me (starts lagging with firefox/itunes/msn/transmission| running at the same time ) im one of these people who HAVE to multitask computers :L i know its old and i probebly shouldn't push it this hard but.
well anyway iv been reading up and seen posts that you can over-clock other g3's (re-soldering the jumpers for the CPU clock controllers) and i was wondering if i could do the same for this one. I've had a little look around the internet and haven't found anything.
Can you put a 800Mhz g3 logic board in 700Mhz g3? I read somewhere that I will have grounding issues. Is that true? Has anyone done this? My ibook has been sitting here unused for the last 4 months and I would like to see if I could get it working. (The video chip has died and I have tried to get it back)

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP on my desktop. I have been using Itunes for years and it has worked fine till about two weeks ago. I had been having issues with my computer being very slow so I began using several freeware programs to clean up my computer. I used Repair Doctor, AVG PC Analyzer, PC Pitstop, Glary Utilities, and Advanced System Care. I discovered that ITunes was no longer usable after using AVG PC Analyzer. I have gone back and reversed all the changes that I made using PC Analyzer and have also used Windows System Restore to go back to a time previous to most of the clean up activities. I have uninstalled ITunes several times and then reinstalled using various combination of installing ITunes and QuickTime. QuickTime is working fine, but ITunes is not working. I click on the ITunes icon and nothing happens.

I've got an old eMac in my den and I'd like to stream videos to the TV ( Toshiba 20" CRT ) in my living room.
I purchased the Apple video adapter, 24 feet of s-video cable and 20 feet of rca ( left & right ) cable with an adapter on one end to fit into the headphone jack on the computer. I hooked it up and there's no picture or sound on the tv when I stream a video.
Also, the icons on my desktop get larger once I plug the video adapter into the eMac.
I'm turning the TV to a Video section.
Is there any workaround to make Netflix Streaming Movies work on a PowerPC G5 Tower Mac ?
It uses Sliverlight Technology from Microsoft .
I'm wondering how much life is left in my 900 MHz G3 iBook (v2.3 with 256 MB). I only use it for web browsing, word processing, and minor media storage, but it's definitely showing its age. Web pages take a while to load and streaming video's too slow to be usable. Would a RAM upgrade solve this, or is it even worth the investment?

I have retail copies of both Tiger and Leopard for my G4, and my OWC order just came in the mail, and after tearing it down, cleaning it up, and throwing a new 160Gb drive and 1Gb of memory into it, the machine is feeling extremely responsive under Tiger. My question is thus: everyone seems to think Tiger's days are numbered, which I can understand when you consider it's age. But how numbered are numbered? Safari and iTunes are still supported up to the current versions, Camino is still supported on 10.4 so when Firefox drops Tiger support I'm not without a Gecko based browser, and the other software I plan to use on this machine (iLife 06, OpenOffice, JDarkRoom and some old games, primarily) are all still good for Tiger.
My primary concern stems from the web browser issue, but more importantly, internet security on this machine. It's on a wired connection behind an AirPort Extreme so I don't know how worried I need to be, but last I checked security updates are not coming down for Tiger anymore from Apple, thus would the iMac become a potential target running Tiger? I don't want to be running bare arsed to the wind, if you'll pardon the expression. So I was hoping someone with a better understanding of software security could explain differences between Tiger and Leopard and wether or not that's a huge deal. I'm tempted to stick with Tiger, because now that the upgrades are in, it's lightning fast. Almost as fast as the MacBook fast, which is impressive from an eight year old machine.
Three days ago, I stored my ibook in my bag, but I forget to take it out. (normally it is sitting on desk recharging)
The ibook itself was in sleep mode (by simply closing the lid). The battery indicator was 1/2 full.
Today I tried to continue working with it. Opened the lid, but the ibook didn't turned itself on. The sleep led wasn't pulsating either. I just thought that it might run out of juice. First I pressed the Power button. Nothing happened.
I plugged it in the power adaptor and then pressed the power button. Nothing happened. I tried holding the Powerbutton in order to force a reset. Nothing happens.
I unplugged the ibook from the power adaptor, and tried to reseat the battery. Opened the lock, pulled it out, pushed it back in, closed the lock)Pushing and/or holding the power button did nothing.
I tried starting the ibook without the battery (does this even work?), while only the power adaptor is plugged in. Pushing and holding the power button did nothing.
To sum it up: It doesn't start with and without the battery nor with the power adaptor.
The strange thing is that the battery is charging. (the light on the power adaptor plug is oragne) Three of the four battery leds on the underside are "on" while I am writing this post. Resetting the power manager (ctrl + option + shift + power) didn't do anything.
I can't get radio streaming from all categories on iTunes. I keep getting the dialogue box that says, "An error occurred while contacting the radio tuning service. Check your Internet connection, or try again later." I've tried rebooting the computer.

I use itunes for music and is connected to my stereo through my apple TV, I also have another stereo and is directly connected to the computer, I play the music simultaneously but sometimes I would like to be able to also listen to it in my macbook pro while being controlled through the mac mini connected to the stereo. Basically I want to st up my mac book pro as another set of remote speakers.
I will shortly be receiving a new i7 iMac to replace my aging Mac Pro. I have a couple of TB of movies and music that I had on an internal drive in the Mac Pro that I used to stream to an Apple TV in another room. Since I am losing all of the drive bays I had with my Mac Pro, I am looking at external drives to use on the iMac. I was wondering how a USB drive would handle streaming movies and music. That is about the only thing that would be on the disk. Would it be fast enough? Or would it stutter? Or should I bite the bullet and go for a fire wire drive? I have a USB enclosure that I can use for it and when my Mac comes I can obviously try it, but was wondering if anyone was doing something similar.

I just recently got my new Imac and am trying to nail down what my options are for streaming music throughout my apt.
The ideal setup for me would be to have my mac run my music/audio from the bedroom and have airport express stream the audio to a Tivoli model 2 (it only has one aux input) in the living room. If I just use itunes it should be a pretty simple setup, but I have one dilemma.
I listen to a lot of Sirius radio and would like to stream Sirius internet radio to the same speakers. Is this possible with airport xpress?? If not what are some of my other options? If possible I want to avoid buying another receiver and using its fm xmiter, this would probably work fine due to the close proximity to the speakers but not a very ideal set-up.
Any advice/experience anyone has to share would be great, also if there are any issue with airtunes I should know.
What was the first version of iTunes that can plat AAC radio streams? I use a very old G4 500 MHz powermac to listen to iTunes streaming internet radio, but more and more stations are switching to AAC streams, which the old 10.3 compatible version of iTunes doesn't support and won't play them. The current version of itunes' minimum system requirements is a 1 Ghz G4, so I can't use the current version of iTunes. If I upgrade this machine to OS 10.4, will I be able to install a version of iTunes that plays AAC radio streams?

Since a recent update streaming podcasts appear in a non-adjustable window over iTunes and I am no longer able to select which portion of the podcast I would like to view. This is irritating.

Are there any xml editors out there for mac? I know about text editors like bbedit and textmate etc., but then I would have to surround text with tags by typing them. I have a long list of addresses and it would be much simpler if I could e.g. select the address text, click on the 'address' button in the window with the available xml tags and the text would automatically be surrounded with the tags. Are there any programs which could do that?

When I booted the computer, it said the drive was not readable or usable or something along that lines so I went to disk utility and erased the hard drive with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) setting selected. Now the drive seems to work fine but I haven't tested it much. Is everything ok with this drive now? Is Journaled the best setting? Is there a better setting to use for video editing. The drive is: WD Caviar GP 500 GB SATA
