Hardware :: Ibook G3 700Mhz Does Not Start (power On)
Oct 28, 2005
Three days ago, I stored my ibook in my bag, but I forget to take it out. (normally it is sitting on desk recharging)
The ibook itself was in sleep mode (by simply closing the lid). The battery indicator was 1/2 full.
Today I tried to continue working with it. Opened the lid, but the ibook didn't turned itself on. The sleep led wasn't pulsating either. I just thought that it might run out of juice. First I pressed the Power button. Nothing happened.
I plugged it in the power adaptor and then pressed the power button. Nothing happened. I tried holding the Powerbutton in order to force a reset. Nothing happens.
I unplugged the ibook from the power adaptor, and tried to reseat the battery. Opened the lock, pulled it out, pushed it back in, closed the lock)Pushing and/or holding the power button did nothing.
I tried starting the ibook without the battery (does this even work?), while only the power adaptor is plugged in. Pushing and holding the power button did nothing.
To sum it up: It doesn't start with and without the battery nor with the power adaptor.
The strange thing is that the battery is charging. (the light on the power adaptor plug is oragne) Three of the four battery leds on the underside are "on" while I am writing this post. Resetting the power manager (ctrl + option + shift + power) didn't do anything.

Can you put a 800Mhz g3 logic board in 700Mhz g3? I read somewhere that I will have grounding issues. Is that true? Has anyone done this? My ibook has been sitting here unused for the last 4 months and I would like to see if I could get it working. (The video chip has died and I have tried to get it back)

I'm trying to get an accurate identification of the iBook white G/3 700 MHz with 12in display we just acquired. There seems to be a couple of very similar models. The Apple Support article is unclear [URL]as to which one we have. One model is an early 2002 release (M8602LL/A), the other a late 2002 release (M8860LL/A).

I'm currently out of the country doing field research and just the other night, there was a power outage here and now my ibook won't start up. Of course, being in a "third world" country, I wasn't able to invest in a good power surage protector.
Is my computer dead for good?
I have a lot of work that needs to be done and my computer is essential here. Anyway, I can rescue my computer? I press the power button and it does absolutely nothing.
What do you people think might be the problem and how much am I looking at to fix this?

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

I recently managed to pick up a Imac G3 Graphite, 700mhz, 1GB ram, 60GB HD, OSX 10.4.11 for free (Well kinda free, im repairing 2 emacs and a powermac g4) it runs pretty well for me (starts lagging with firefox/itunes/msn/transmission| running at the same time ) im one of these people who HAVE to multitask computers :L i know its old and i probebly shouldn't push it this hard but.
well anyway iv been reading up and seen posts that you can over-clock other g3's (re-soldering the jumpers for the CPU clock controllers) and i was wondering if i could do the same for this one. I've had a little look around the internet and haven't found anything.

basically I am looking to use an original eMac 700mhz with 768MB RAM in my living room to stream itunes from our other computers. Only reason i am even considering it is because eMacs are way cheap on eBay, less than an airport express for use with airtunes, plus i could check email etc on it.

I know this concerns an older machine, but I was hoping to get some solid advice on this subject. I have retail copies of both Tiger and Leopard for my G4, and my OWC order just came in the mail, and after tearing it down, cleaning it up, and throwing a new 160Gb drive and 1Gb of memory into it, the machine is feeling extremely responsive under Tiger. My question is thus: everyone seems to think Tiger's days are numbered, which I can understand when you consider it's age. But how numbered are numbered? Safari and iTunes are still supported up to the current versions, Camino is still supported on 10.4 so when Firefox drops Tiger support I'm not without a Gecko based browser, and the other software I plan to use on this machine (iLife 06, OpenOffice, JDarkRoom and some old games, primarily) are all still good for Tiger.
My primary concern stems from the web browser issue, but more importantly, internet security on this machine. It's on a wired connection behind an AirPort Extreme so I don't know how worried I need to be, but last I checked security updates are not coming down for Tiger anymore from Apple, thus would the iMac become a potential target running Tiger? I don't want to be running bare arsed to the wind, if you'll pardon the expression. So I was hoping someone with a better understanding of software security could explain differences between Tiger and Leopard and wether or not that's a huge deal. I'm tempted to stick with Tiger, because now that the upgrades are in, it's lightning fast. Almost as fast as the MacBook fast, which is impressive from an eight year old machine.

My iBook G4 will not start or even the display turn on. When I flip it over, there are no lights in the battery. I read on the ebay listing that the charger may need to be replaced. But, when I tried to plug it in, the charger displayed a green light.

I have an iBook G4 that I got from a friend. It was dropped once and since then it won't start up. When I turn it on I hear the chimes, and the apple logo and the rotating "loading" symbol show up but that's all. It just stays on that loading screen forever. It will stay like that as long as I leave it on. Anything I can do?

I've got an iBook G3 that won't start, no idea why. I've replaced it with a new MacBook (what an awesome machine), and I have data on the iBook that needs to be transferred. How do I go about this?
I'm presuming I will have to remove the G3 hard drive, but what then?

Here's a fun one for you guys. My teacher in my class (tech school for computers and networking) acquired an old iBook, 14 inch. He has no idea what model it is, or what the specs are. He gave it to me to try to repair, being the only Mac guy in the Here's the deal. It charges the battery, and but won't turn on. I tried the PMU reset.

After never having done so in the past, my 1.33 12'' ibook has suddenly started rejecting all CDs it's given. Both new and old data CDs are turned away, and yet it accepted a DVD I tried a few days ago. What's causing this?

Today i powered up my iBook G4, after a long time of waiting for the blue bar on the start up screen to reach the end, it became stuck once it had reached the end, i left it for a hour or so on this screen, and it hasn't got past it, i did a hardware test, and everything is fine, although it took about 8 minutes to complete the 'memory' test, so i'm thinking it could be a RAM problem ?, what do you guys think ?
EDIT: Just used disk utility and apparently there is a problem with the disk, that it can't fix, so i'm gonna have to reinstall OSX

Also when I click on Option, it doesn't give me the option to set the boot devise.

i Was Using My Ibook And The Last Thing Running On My Ibook Before This Dilemma Was The Voice Recognition Program. Out Of The Blue My Ibook Shut Off And When I Tried To Restart My Laptop All It Did Was Turn On But Would Not Do Anything More Than Just The Power Light Glowing. My Ibook Would Not Boot Up ...no Os...no Nothing Except For There Is A Lil Box In The Center Of The Screen That Flips From The Mac Man Icon To A Question Mark. But That Is Absolutely All It Will Do. I Am New To Mac And Am Devastated By This Problem. I Am Enrolled In College And Every Bit Of My Schoolwork Is On My Laptop.

When the computer is turned on the grey startup screen is full size then goes to half size for normal operation. I have already reinstalled the OS and zapped the pram. When I open the display window of the system preferences it shows the main display as 640x480 with no other options and a second display window with 1920x1080 and no options even though there is no other display hooked up. It seems like the main display is stuck in 640x480 which is why it is so small. Running OS 10.2

I have had my g4 for about two years and all of a sudden the thing decided that it's not going to turn on anymore. Power is getting to the machine and a certain amount of whirring is heard but not the signature! as it starts. The screen remains blank and would stay like that all night if I let it. The only thing I did differently before this appeared was to take it to work in a different bag a few times. Rucksack before, Side bag (more vibration).

I've got an early '08 MacBook and an iBook G4. The iBook will only work for a few minutes before freezing completely.
I want to use my MB to get info off the iBook, but when I follow the instructions to start the iBook in Taget Disk mode, the MacBook asks if I want to 'initialise' the harddrive. What's that about?
How can I get the data off my iBook (ideally without re-installing the OS)?

My IBook G3 will not start up. I can get the gray apple screen with pinwheel and then after a really long time it will go to a blank blue screen. A couple times it went to the login screen instead but in the user id it says "other" and when I try to enter my username and password it won't recognize me. I am a college student and one of the Apple geniuses here did a check of my hard drive and it checked out okay. We were not able to get it to start up in safe mode; it seemed like it was starting in safe mode but then it came to the login screen and would not allow me to login with my usual information. I was able to start up in single user mode and run fsck which found a couple things and after another fsck it said everthing was fine. But, it still gets hung up at startup. When I try to boot from the OS X installation CD it doesn't seem to be booting up with it, it only goes to the screen to install OS X. According to the directions on the Apple support site when I insert the CD and start up holding down the "c" key it should start up and then I should be able to repair permissions but I can't get that far.

I thought I'd write this brief how-to incase anybody else ever needed the information. I have bought 3 power cords/connectors/adaptors for my iBook in the last three years - crazy, right? I stepped on the tip of the first one by accident, and was unable to bend in back into shape. The second one (a third party version by MacAlley) spontaneously conked on me, the brick stopped worked. And more recently my third, another third party bought cheap off eBay because I was fed up of paying, developed a connection issue somewhere in the wire (it worked fine, then I had to fiddle with the wire to get it to work, then it stopped working). With all these broken connectors sitting around, I figured there must be a way to solder them together and avoid paying another 30$ on eBay and being without a laptop for 2 weeks.
STEP ONE:
Assemble all the broken adaptors you have, asses what works with what.
- I took the brick from the original which was working fine and the tip from the 2nd cord (the one where the brick stopped working)
STEP TWO:
Cut off the tip from both cords, make sure to leave plenty of wire attached to the brick and tip your using.
STEP THREE:
Strip the tips of both wires, there should be two sections; an outside section (wrapped around the inside section) and an inside section. In the original Apple adaptor, the outside section was braided around the inside (which was incased in rubber) along with a yellow insulator. In the second adaptor (MacAlley) the outside was twisted around the separate inside wire.
STEP FOUR:
Clearly seperate the two sections of wire from each, then twist them together. MAKE SURE THEY TWO SECTIONS (INSIDE VS. OUTSIDE) ARE NOT TOUCHING. You don't want to short-circuit your adaptor.
STEP FIVE (optional):
Solder the wires together
STEP SIX:
Tie a knot in the power chord before the connection, to avoid accidental stress on the joint, and cover it all with electrical tape.
So far, its been working fine. But be warned, THERE IS SOME RISK INVOLVED WITH THIS PROCEDURE. My battery is charging fine and the iBook is powered as usual. I'm just waiting for the battery to fully charge to make sure the power adaptor stops charging the battery when its full (don't want a cooked battery!)

Ok, I know I've had 2 discussions here already but it still doesn't make sense to me. Everything says its a bad Logic Board. Ok, Power Mac A1074 2.0 DP It hangs at white screen w/ grey apple logo and no spinning wheel. I have ran the Apple hardware diagnostics disc several tims. Everything comes back that all hard ware is GOOD. I try and run the OS diagnostics on the same disc and it hangs at the white screen/grey apple logo. I have replaced the hard drive and started it holding 'option"it reads the Apple OS Install disc (just as it reads the hardware diagnostic disc just fine) when I try to boot from the install disc it again hangs at the white screen/grey apple logo with no spinning wheel.
Info:PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
