PowerPC :: How To Rescue A IMac G5 Drive
Sep 19, 2009
I've got a dead, out-of-warranty iMac G5motherboard died. All of important files were backed up but there are still a few things on the drive I'd like to have if I can get them. I have no reason to believe the hard drive is damaged.
From what I can understand, I can get a 3.5" SATA drive enclosure from some place like Newegg, pull the hard drive out of the iMac, and then connect the drive to my Mac mini. And, assuming the drive is sound, I'll be able to pull files off it and use it as a normal external drive.
Does all this sound right? This definitely isn't my expertise and I'd rather confirm it before I try anything.

When I travel I would generally take a small travel drive that is clone of my white MacBook as a rescue drive. Now that I have the MBA I am wondering if I could just clone my 11.6 MBA to a 64 GB flash drive and then if the worst happened I could reverse clone from the flash drive to the MBA.

My intel 2006 iMac recently died, and I'm wondering if I could one of the 1GB RAM sticks into the a G3 iMac I own. And more importantly: If I could put the hard drive from the intel iMac into the iMac G3.
The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.

After re-opening that giant graphite egg, re-plugging in the cd drive and making sure all of the wires were properly plugged in too, and getting a new kind of hate inside of me for apples quality of construction, I have gotten the disc drive reading again. However it will still not boot off cd.
I just want to upgrade to tiger and it won't let me do so, I can't even find the CD drive in the boot options. but the strange thing is that the os x tiger cd is selectable in the startup disk options, but on boot with the boot menu it does not show up.
is there anything i can do (preferably without spending any money, or very little) or am I stuck with os x 10.3.9 for the rest of my life?
also I'd like to do a clean boot, after all I bought the computer used, and it has a bunch of junk files on it that I'm too lazy to search for and destroy myself.
plus the thing still thinks its named after the school that used to own it, and I'd like it not to.

I want to replace the hard drive of a rev A g5 imac and I see that currently it has a sata 1.5gb/s hard drive. Could I get away with getting a 3.0gb/s or is it incompatible? Specifically this one:[URL]
PS- I'm trying to find an enclosure that is firewire but will allow me to hook up the sata drive i take out. Do they really exist? I'm having the most difficult time.

I'm looking to upgrade my iMac's hardrive and I found an HDD that I'd like to buy; I just want to make sure its compatible with my computer. I have a 17inch imac, and a 1.8 G5 processor (NO built in iSight). The hardrive I'm looking at is a Seagate Barracuda 500GB internal HDD. Here's a link to detailed specks: [URL]The size is right but I'm not sure the computer will accept SERIAL-ATA. It looks like the drive installed now is only ATA, so I wanted to double check and see if this makes a difference. If it does, could someone please recomend a suitable 500GB internal Hardrive.

What is the size of the drive is it 9.5mm or 12.7mm?
And will this work?
[URL]
I know it doesn't say it is compatible but it is a slot loading drive compatible with osx.

Would the iMac accept an internal DVD Drive from another Mac or do I have to stick with the CD-RW drive that came with it?

I recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!

this is one of my pet peeves with Mac OSX
i use dual monitors and some times when im not using dual monitors programs will still open and place themselves in daft positions like i still have 2 monitors.
for example, i've just opened aMSN which normally then positions itself slap bang in between the 2 screens only this time, im in the front room without the second screen.
basically the aMSN window is un-retrievable... i cant drag it to a part of the screen where i can see it properly. Opera does the same thing some times, the bar across the top actually goes up above the Mac OS bar and i then cant retrieve the damn thing so i can use my bookmarks etc.
how do i retrieve windows that open themselves almost off screen?

I just restored an old 1999 G3 iMac DV 400MHZ with slot-drive from the dead, and I feel it lacks a bit of power under it's hood. I already put RAM and HDD but the computing power is just not enough. What I want to do is go into OpenFirmware and speed up the cpu and possibly the bus, I remember doing so on my sawtooth but I can't find the code plus that was a G4 and now I have a G3. I also found this page [URL] that shows how to mechanicaly overclock up to 1GHZ but I want to be able to do it non physical if possible. I know this isn't the hot topic now a days but maybe some of you will remember what they used to do and feel some nostalgia(is that a propper word?).

I've got a drive in my iMac G5 that I'd like to put into an external enclosure instead. Would I just need a 3.5" SATA enclosure or should I be looking for something more specific?

I have currently acquired a few old Macs. I have got an iMac G3 SE with a slot loading drive. The computer is fine all barr the slot load drive - it has died. I have also got a PPC Mac Mini with a suggested logic board failure.
Does anybody think there is a chance i could replace the broken slot load drive in the iMac with the working one from the mac mini? i don't want to start opening the iMac up if someone already knows theres no chance it would work.

I have an iMac G5 with a broken graphics card. As a result it won't get past the start up screen when booting. I have a new mac on the way, but I'm wondering what would be the easiest/cheapest way to access my files on the old iMac.
I've read about taking the HD out and using a SATA/USB connector to attach it to the new computer as an external HD. Is that my best option, or is there a way to boot the iMac and just access the HD via the iMac's firewire/usb ports.
I've run the CD diagnostic tests and it says everything is fine, except the graphics card.

I am new to this forums and want to know if my dvd mini discs will fit into the dvr drive on an iMac. I also have an older Powerbook and would also like to know if the mini discs will fit also. I haven't tried this yet because I don't want to loose the discs or ruin my drives. I just bought a used iMac 20" widescreen and wanted to just put my mini discs from my camcorder into it without having to plug the unit in via hard wire.

I have a 1.25GHz G4 and I'm going to to upgrade to Tiger and install the max RAM. I just thought that I might want to replace the 80g HD that's in there. What is the biggest drive available for that model? From what little I can find on the internet, it sounds like it's a tricky job.

OS X 10.6, 2 USB hard disks (magnetic, not SSDs), Data Rescue 3.
I used Data Rescue to clone a dying 120GB hard disk with a single partition to a healthy 500GB hard disk. The healthy disk now just reads as a 500GB hard disk with a SINGLE 120GB partition, as expected. I then aimed a deep scan at the 120GB PARTITION on the 500GB drive.
Question: Could the scan have picked up files that had been previously deleted on the healthy 500GB disk, WHICH WOULD CURRENTLY RESIDE OFF THE NEW RECOVERED PARTITION?
The reason I ask if because I don't want to mix files recovered from the dying hard disk with my own files that I previously may have had on the healthy 500GB disk.
Another quick question: are partitions continuous on a disk, or can they be on sectors physically scattered around the disk?

i have deleted some files from a USB pen drive in a Mac (OS 10.4), dragging them from the USB to the trash can in Mac and then used "empty trash" to get the space back in the pen drive, and as far as i know when you "trash" files they don't get truly deleted.
But i'm confused of where to look for them, shoud i look to recover them in the USB drive, or in my Mac?
Oh and one more thing! I did this months ago... Oh and i'm sorry if this is not the right forum, but i don't even know if this is a Mac issue or a USB drive issue in the first place.

I have a G5 Imac and a G4 ibook. i want to use time machine, and have one external hard drive connect to both. I could get an external with more than one input (ie, usb and firewire)--does that work? Could i use a usb hub to connect the 2 computers to the HD, and set up different partitions?
And what of NAS? i do not want to set up a whole network (we already have one at my office, and i want this to be independent).

I have an iMac G5 (version10.5.8) and I'd like to transfer images and stuff from my laptop powerbook G4 (not sure of the version but it uses Tiger) onto the iMac. I was wondering which would be the best choice. I need a decent size as I'm a photography student and I take tons of large sized images. Would also need to possibly transfer programs also.

I have a project to do in iBook Author, and Apple have provided a list of fonts that can are used in iOS, but I cannot seem to find them on my system. When my mac was inistially set up, all fonts unecessary for the system were removed to avoid any clashes with our in-house fonts, so I'm not sure if the Lion mac initially shipped with the iOS fonts installed. In the 'old days', I'd simply put the system disk in the mac and use a utility like 'pacifist' to explore the contents of the intallation disk, and retrieve the fonts from there – but in Lion, all I have is this 'Rescue Disk'. How would I go about retrieving fonts from there without touching anything else on my system?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 2.5 Ghz Intel i5, 4Gb RAM (work)

I powered the drive on at the mains and it makes a normal 'spinning up' noise, before cutting out after 5-10 seconds. It is not recognised in OS X or disk utility (it doesn't show up at all).
Is there anything that can be done to rescue the files that were on it? Could it be a power unit inside the drive that is gone which could be replaced or is the whole thing dead?
